Quilters Mercantile May 2015 Quiltipedia Quilters seem to have a love/hate relationship with thread. Each quilter will have their favorite thread. Unraveling the mystery of thread is more than can be in this one article but we will attempt to help and hopefully not confuse! Each spool of thread has a set of numbers on it. Usually these numbers are 30 wt, 40 wt., or 50 wt. forward slash and a 2 or 3.These numbers are the size of the thread which is based on the Gunze Count. The Gunze Count is the first number in the weight of the thread. This indicates the length of thread in kilometers. So a spool that has 50 wt. on it really means that it requires 50 kilometers of that thread to weigh one kilogram. Therefore, the larger the number the finer the thread. The second number indicts how many strands or plies are wrapped together. For example 3 means 3 ply thread. The Denier method is another method used to indicate the weight of thread. This method uses the length of the thread weighted in grams. With this system the higher the number the heavier the thread. The spool will indicate if it is Denier and might read 100/2. So the thread consists of a two ply each weighing 100 denier each. There is one more method for weighing thread and it is called the Tex method. This too measures the weight in grams but it is based on 1000 meters. The Tex method numbers are like the Denier, in that the larger the number the heavier the thread. So check out the numbers on your spool of thread and you will know what they mean.
