CSJ Newsline for the friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province Spring 2012 Volume 29, Number 2 CSJs and Social Media by Mary Rose Noonan, CSJ – Communications Director Social media of all types are ubiquitous, seemingly appearing everywhere all at once! We Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are using various types of social media to further our mission of bringing God’s unifying love to all whom we meet. Nearly all of you are now familiar with the worldwide web. Many of you have visited our province website at www.csjalbany.org. At the site, you can read our sisters’ vocation stories and ministry stories, learn about our history from France to the United States; take a tour of our Provincial House; pray with us; catch up on our current news; link to the Carondelet Music Center, the Carondelet Hospitality Center, the St. Joseph Worker Program and many blogs by sisters; reflect on obituaries of sisters you know; gather information about our vocation process both for vowed members and CSJ Associates and discover many other new pieces of information about us. Sisters of St Joseph Phone App i re L We’ ve! CSJ Phone App Prayer is a powerful thing. If you would like the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet to remember you and your intentions in prayer download a free PrayersPlease app on your smartphone or tablet or visit PrayersPlease. com. Scan this code with your smart phone to access the prayersplease.com website. An ever-increasing number of individuals are communicating with others through the web-connected, hand-held devices. In fact, many studies tell us that such hand-held devices as Smartphones (iPhones, Blackberries, Androids, etc.) and tablets such as iPads, are quickly replacing use of computers in many cases. We are pleased to announce that, with the help of a grant from the John, Marie and Joseph Whalen Foundation, we have designed and implemented a prayer-request phone app (application) that will work on all platforms of Smartphones and tablets. With the free app, you can send us a prayer request quickly, and that request will be remembered in the prayers of our sisters across the country. To access the prayer app, simply search the app market on your phone for “prayersplease” and download the app which will be recognized by the bright icon of a hand holding a heart. If you are not a Smartphone user, simply go to www.prayersplease.com and send us your prayer request via the very user-friendly website! In addition to the website and phone app, thanks to newer technologies, we have been able to include, in addition to the printed word, a few other means of communication that will further the ability of all of us to interact (Cont. on page 2) (Cont. from page 1) with one another in our striving to bring God’s Word to the world and to use new ways of building community with all of you. We have begun a Youtube channel. You can avoid that long link by going into www.youtube.com and searching for CSJ Albany Province! We will be adding more and more videos as time goes on! To add to the website, phone app and Youtube channel, we now have a province Facebook page. If you have your own Facebook page, we would be delighted if you will go into ours and “like” us! Our Facebook page can be found through a search of “Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province Facebook page,” or via the link http://www.facebook.com/CSJAlbany. The Facebook page gives you snippets of our life and events as they happen! Many of our sisters are also connected individually to LinkedIn, a professional social network, and they use the vehicle to create a professional profile visible to others and to maintain connections “business contacts.” Such connections for our sisters provide still another way to remind individuals of what drives our mission of bringing God’s unifying love to all we meet. So we learn as we go, and our presence on the social-networking sites is focused on deepening our communication and collaboration with all of you in as many ways as possible and facilitating discussions and engagement of all kinds. All of you are very special and important to us, and we will always give first place to live, local, participating human beings in our efforts to communicate with friends and build relationships! No technology can replace that person-to-person, face-to-face contact that inspires and supports all of us in our journey to God. So remember, take a look at our social-media tools and be assured that our landline telephones and our mailing address still work too! r PS: From Sister Carol. To receive updates as they happen, please share your e-mail address with us. E-mail us at [email protected] Thank you! What is a QR code? QR is short for Quick Response, and these barcodes can be read quickly by a cell phone. You see QR codes today in a magazine ad, on a billboard, on a web page or even on a t-shirt. Dear Friends, Recently I had the privilege of a journey on the Onrust, a replica of a 15th century single deck sailing vessel. The original Onrust was built in Manhattan in 1614. This is the ship on which Adrien Block sailed to explore the northeast coastal areas and rivers. This replica was built by volunteers at Mabee Farm in Rotterdam Junction, NY from 2007-2009. The trip was a short one from the Port of Albany to Waterford. As we passed the local cities, towns and villages of Albany, Rensselaer, Menands, Troy, Green Sister Mary Anne Rodgers, Island, Cohoes and Waterford I was amazed to see CSJ Province Director churches of all shapes and denominations. Truly the faith of the immigrant populations have left a lasting testament. These churches were part of the social fabric that provided education and enculturation for countless individuals. This same faith also gave a rootedness and identity to so many of us. This year has been designated “A Year of Faith for Catholic Christians.” This year is also the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. As women religious, the spirit of Vatican II had a profoundly transformative effect on us and that transformation is far from over. It continues to call us into the future. Recently at our April Assembly, the Albany Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, recommitted itself to a renewed journey of theological updating. As this process unfolds, we will be inviting you our friends, our associates and partners in ministry to share in this journey with us. We envision this as our way of addressing the spiritual hunger and longing, so palatable in today’s society. Watch for more to come! In this time of Pentecost we call again upon the Spirit to breathe new life into us as Church. May the enthusiasm of Spirit call us to live vibrant lives. May the fire of Spirit call us to care for all who need our love. May Spirit’s courage enable us to speak our truth. May we continue to enflesh the gifts of the Spirit given to us so abundantly. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23 Sincerely, Province Director: Sister Mary Anne Rodgers Province Treasurer: Sister Serena A. Thompson Development Office Staff: Sister Carol Rohloff, director Kristine Ruddy, development coordinator Veronica Visker, staff Carmella Latham, staff Sister Rose Eileen Kelly, staff Sister Mary Catherine Barron, proof reader Stimulated by the Holy Spirit of Love and receptive to the Spirit’s inspirations, the Sister of St. Joseph moves always toward profound love of God and love of neighbor without distinction from whom she does not separate herself and for whom, in the following of Christ, she works in order to achieve unity both of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God in humility, the spirit of the Incarnate Word, and in sincere charity, the manner of St. Joseph whose name she bears. We are pretty much on schedule and have one more floor, 5B, to go to complete the project. The sisters have been wonderful in cooperating for the project. It was no small job to relocate all the residents floor by floor so that the men could work renovating one floor at a time working from the bottom up. Sister Carol A. Rohloff, CSJ Development Director I thought you may enjoy seeing a video of the completed work so if you have access to a computer you can view the 3B renovation on YOU TUBE. If you are reading this on our web-site you can go directly to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvD6dy_e2KU&feature=g-upl. If you are reading this in the hard copy of Newsline you can go to www.youtube.com and then in the search box search for: Thank you for Helping with the Renovation of the B wing. Then go to the right where it says “Sort” and click on relevance. The video should be about the third one from the top. Do enjoy it!!! Sister Mary Rose Noonan, our Communications Director, did a wonderful job in the cover story of this Newsline to inform you of all our “multi-channel” endeavors with social media. We are trying to keep up with this modern society. I hope you will take full advantage of the many options you now have to keep in contact with what is happening with the Sisters of St. Joseph. As you can well imagine, the cost of producing Newsline continues to go up with the rising cost of everything. Add to it the cost of postage and it is a sizeable sum to send you each issue. Our fiscal year begins July 1. With the fall issue of Newsline 2012 we will no longer be listing the memorials and honorials in every issue. Memorials, honorials and a donor listing will be made once a year in the winter issue. This will cut costs for us as the size of Newsline will be smaller. The winter issue will continue to be our accountability issue showing our income and expenses. In addition to the listings of memorials, honorials and a donor listing the winter issue will continue to give you the information regarding the Ziti Dinner. Mark your calendars now for the following: St. Joseph’s Circle, October 7, 2012 Christmas Donor Liturgy January 6, 2013 Ziti Dinner, March 23, 2013 GOLF, June 24, 2013 – (Shaker Ridge Country Club will be doing its greens over next year so our normal May Golf date is not available, hence the change to June.) Thank you for all you are and do for the Sisters of St. Joseph and our ministries. PS: Please be sure to give us your e-mail address on any and all correspondence you send us. We do wish to keep our database up to date and this is one way you can help us. 4 CSJ Newsline Blessings, Sister Carol A. Rohloff, CSJ Development Director Spring 2012 August 2012 SUNDAY Spring 2012 MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY CSJ Newsline 5 “Fort Orange Singers Visit the Provincial House” Because of the initiative of Tony Esposito, the Fort Orange Club Singers came and sang for our Sisters on Tuesday evening, April 10, 2012. The Fort Orange group was wonderful. They sang a medley from Fiddler on the Roof, some old time Romantic songs, patriotic songs and Irish melodies. As special treats we heard from “Dan the DoOp Guy” and a wonderful old gentleman who was sort of an older rapper…who combined lyrics with a beat. The Sisters truly enjoyed them. Tom Savoie (who we are proud to say was taught by some of our sisters both in Cohoes and at The College of Saint Rose) did a terrific job in both playing and leading the group. We were fortunate to have had Tony do some work for us when he was with Capital TV. He and Sister Joanne McCarthy, our Provincial House administrator at the time, worked to have cable TV installed in every bedroom and to have the Provincial House equipped to do in-house broadcasts over the cable network so that the sisters could watch the happenings in various locales in the house. Thanks to Tony those Sisters who were confined to their room because of illness could still enjoy the performance. The Sisters also, thanks to Tony, have the ability to view daily Mass broadcast from our chapel, to see what is happening at Sisters’ wakes and funerals and to view the happenings of Community meetings. I am happy that Tony and his wife, Lucille, were able to come and see what impact Tony’s professionalism had and continues to have on our sisters. As the saying goes: “Their good works live on after them.” Tony and Lucille Esposito 6 CSJ Newsline Spring 2012 Love In Action by Catherine Sean Croghan, CSJ From our early days of bringing God’s love to those in poor French towns who were reeling from the repeated ravages of war and disease, Sisters of St. Joseph have shown God’s love in action in the healing ministry. Indeed, we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, and Sister Catherine Sean Croghan is up to the challenge. Catherine has spent nearly all of her 47 years as a CSJ in the healthcare ministry. She spent one year as a nurse’s aide and seven years as an LPN at the Provincial House, caring for our elderly sisters. During those years, Sister Genevieve Conway, director of personnel, noticed Catherine’s care, concern and capability. “Sister Genevieve was the one,” says Catherine, “who spoke to me about the LPN program at Albany Medical Center and encouraged me to apply.” The idea of professional studies was a bit daunting for Catherine, but she was able to keep the goal in sight. “The word “practical” in the term, ‘licensed practical nurse’ gave me some incentive! I am a very practical person, an efficient hard worker with good organizational skills. I caught on quickly to what needed to be done for each person.” In 1975, Catherine began her career at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam, where she serves as an LPN Control Station Nurse in the Surgical Suite. Exhibiting the same faith and flexibility as our early sisters, Catherine has responded to the many changes in health care. One of the biggest areas of growth is in the field of technology. Catherine began her career in the O.R. by scheduling cases in a notebook; later she was instrumental in building, implementing and teaching others the present computerized program. “At the beginning, I built into the program approximately 800 surgical procedures; now with new and changing surgical techniques, I have entered 1,439 procedures into the procedure dictionary!” In addition, Catherine has seen changes in the CSJ presence at St. Mary’s. “When I began this ministry, I was one of 30+ CSJs who lived together in a hospital convent. Now there are five of us, living in smaller houses.” Because Catherine realizes there will be a time when there are no sisters at St. Mary’s, she takes seriously the responsibility of spreading the charism. “During breaks, I walk the corridors and visit with staff and volunteers; sometimes after work and on Saturdays, I volunteer in the gift shop. I also try to continue the tradition begun by Sister Margaret Raphael Cronkhite several years ago of beginning each morning report with a prayer. Our CSJ charism calls me to treat all persons equally, not to hold back on extending forgiveness, and to heal others through my care and my kind words and actions.” Catherine Sean Croghan expresses God’s love in action through the two sets of initials she bears after her name—CSJ and LPN— and she is a wonderful credit to both! Spring 2012 CSJ Newsline 7 Your Generosity Helps us to Help Others By Lynn Levo, CSJ Sister Lynn is a Consulting Psychologist with her own practice. She has literally traveled the globe giving lectures and workshops and has spent many weeks in Peru with our Sisters. While there she has worked with our young CSJs and candidates. At home, she co-ordinates the Tim Janis Concert in December where we invite our supporters to a FREE concert. Our Sisters are assisting young women in Peru to receive an education and/or training so that they can live and support themselves and their families as well as to be of service to their own people. Donations offered at our annual Tim Janis Concert held at the Provincial House in December 2011, were sent directly to Peru for our “scholarship program.” The following is a letter that we received from Zenaida, one of the women that we are helping, assisted by the donations from the Christmas Concert. * Dear Sisters and Friends, Before all else I greet you with a cordial embrace and at the same time hoping you are well. I would like to begin by expressing my appreciation for the great help you have been for me in making possible for a year my college education/studies in Psychology. Many thanks for your generosity. To continue I would like to share with you the reasons which led me to choose this career. I feel that God has been very generous with me in that he has permitted me to live experiences which have put me more in touch with my humanity and who has also placed in me gifts which need to be strengthened in order to be able to help others and these studies will contribute to that purpose; and give me those tools which will assist me in the work I plan to do. In looking at our society, our people, I realize that there are many persons who do not live but survive; I believe that what causes it is that many are not at peace with themselves. My hope is to be able to help men and women "cure their wounds" and to be reconciled with themselves.....I would like to be that friendly arm on which they can lean, I want to be that extended hand that will help them rise and together to be able to see that beyond the pain, the sadness, the jealousy, the vengeance, the humiliation exists love, friendship, happiness... I want to contribute so that our society will improve...I dream of a world which is more human, where one can breathe love, communion. I know that perhaps all this is "a Utopia" (a dream) but I am convinced that many other persons exist who also seek and share this dream. But I do not wish that this be only a dream; I want to contribute towards making it a reality and I know that the career I have chosen will be of much help in doing it. I trust that the Spirit guide our steps and give light to our actions/journey -- I leave you once again most appreciative of your support. May the good Lord bless you and all the work you do. With love and gratitude, Zenaida *Letter translated from Spanish 8 CSJ Newsline Spring 2012 My CSJ Bookends By Tom Driscoll One of my dearest friends, Fr. Peter Worn, says that the greatest compliment one can give to another human being is to recognize that he or she has touched another’s soul. Today at your Jubilee celebration, you mark some very significant and touching milestones in the life of your sisters. In any case, each of you has dedicated her life to make a difference in the lives of others. I would like to acknowledge in a special way two of my life’s CSJ Bookends: Sister Geraldine Corkrey and Sister Joan Killoran. As a second grader in St. Francis de Sales School, Troy in 1961, I was very fortunate to have Sister Geraldine Corkrey, the one and only Sister Raymond Marie. Even then I recall her drive to bring out the best in me and all my efforts. She may have been of one of the earliest influences in my life who encouraged me not to be afraid to be different. Back then we actually were confirmed in the second grade. When it was time to choose our confirmation names, Sister Geraldine handed me a book of saints, and I settled on Ignatius of Loyola. All of my boys have had a Jesuit education! She must have known something then! As the years passed, I entered high school and college with the Christian Brothers as my teachers. Eventually, I went into social work and worked for the Daughters of Charity at St. Catherine’s Center in Albany. That path brought me to Lyle, my partner in life. After marriage, however, my connection to the Church and my faith withered. We settled in Cazenovia where we became members of St. James Parish as we raised our boys. It was during that time I was blessed to find my other CSJ Bookend, Sister Joan Killoran. She brought me back to the community with so many great rewards following. I’m so glad to call her one of my best friends. Joan and Maureen [Nelligan] hold a special place in my heart. In addition, I note as my good friend another CSJ: Sister Eileen McCann. From Eileen, my sons too have been touched by the CSJ hand. Thank you, Eileen! May the celebration continue, and may each of you continue to touch the lives of so many more! (Tom Driscoll was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales, Troy, Class of 1967.) THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SUPPORTED THE ZITI DINNER IN ANY WAY!!! Ziti Dinner Winners March 2012 Teresa J. Before the mass I noticed a gentleman in the corridor leading to chapel. Wanting to be welcoming, I struck up a conversation. The man, I found out, was Alfred E. Eberle. He told me it was the first time he had visited the Provincial House and he was here on a mission. After inquiring “what mission,” he shared with me his story. Back in 1944-45 he was a student at St. Mary’s in Hoosick Falls. He came to the Mass particularly to seek out Sister Rose Margaret. Back in the 40s Sister Rose had given him a holy card. On it she had written a special message. Al had kept that holy card in his wallet ever since. He reached in his pocket, pulled out his wallet and there was this holy card with ragged ears and yellowed from age. Sure enough, on it was the note from Sister Rose Margaret. Al had carried the holy card miles and miles. He had read about Sister Rose in a previous edition of Newsline and just wanted to “check in”, say “HI” and “Thank you.” He asked if Sister Rose would be at the liturgy. I said she would be in a wheel chair most likely up front on the left side. Al went into chapel and waited. Not having time to greet Sister before Mass he would wait until after it was over. As Providence would have it, I was sharing some reflections at the liturgy and Al’s story gave me a perfect lead in to how you never know what effect “little acts of kindness” have on others. I took the opportunity to elaborate on the reunion that was about to happen and watched Sister Rose’s face as I encouraged Al to stand up and have Rose look back at him. The entire audience applauded and needless to say the message struck home. At the reception in the foyer of the house Al and Sister Rose had a fine opportunity to reconnect. YOU NEVER KNOW!!! You can tell by the smiles it was indeed a happy event for both of them. Vito Ottati, Vito Lambasco and Mrs. Pat Ottati (wife of Vito), the representatives of the St. Agnella Abate Club of Amsterdam, are shown by an immersion tub on one of the infirmary floors at the Provincial House. The Club recently presented the CSJ community with a generous check to help purchase a new tub such as the one shown. The members of the club gifted the Sisters in gratitude for all that the Sisters have done for the people of Amsterdam in the schools and parishes and at St. Mary’s Hospital which is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph. 10 CSJ Newsline Spring 2012 Where Are They Now? by Sister Patricia Allen We now head to the Southern Tier and we feature our sisters from St. Paul’s Binghamton – Sisters Joan Thomas McNerney, Maura Simms (formerly S. CSJ Newsline 11 We Invite You to Come and Linger Over Breakfast by Debbie Timmis, CSJ The Sisters of St. Joseph Ministry Committee is beginning a new Initiative - Linger Over Breakfast starting on September 29, 2012. The Linger Over Breakfast Event has long been an initiative of our St. Louis Province beginning in 2005. Marion Renkins, CSJ, the director of the Event in St. Louis wrote, “I've asked various sisters and associates to share their passion - no one has ever turned me down!” Since Linger Over Breakfast started, there are about 150 people who gather four times a year for breakfast and some time together listening to talks on various topics. Our Albany Province’s first breakfast will be held on September 29, 2012 at 9:00 AM in the Provincial House Dining Room. Coffee will be served at 9:00 as we gather and a delicious breakfast buffet will be available at 9:30 AM. Our first speaker will be Mary Ellen Curtin, CSJ. (Picture to the left). Mary Ellen will present, “Mysticism and the 21st Century”. The talk should begin shortly after we have settled with breakfast and end by 11:00 AM. We see this as an excellent opportunity to extend hospitality to friends and highlight the thoughts and experiences of our sisters and associates. This should also offer all of us a chance to continue updating and learning on a variety of topics. The cost for the breakfast and talk will be $15.00 per person with a discount provided to those who sign up for all four dates. You can bequeath a specific dollar amount. • You can direct that the residuary of your estate, that which is left after all other bequests are satisfied, go to the Society of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Latham, New York. • You can name the Society of the Sisters of St. Joseph as a contingent beneficiary in the event that your primary beneficiary predeceases you. • If you have an existing will but want to include a bequest to the Society of the Sisters of St. Joseph, you may be able to do so with a simple codicil to your will. We recommend that you consult with your financial and/or estate planning advisor to fully understand the tax benefits for your estate. YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Two of those children were my niece and nephew. As founder and executive director, I convinced my brother to enroll his children so I could run the scheduled classes. There were also 85 instrumental students enrolled to take private or group lessons. Today, as the center celebrates its 20th anniversary, it boasts more than 200 students and 14 Kindermusik classes for children from three months to seven years old. Our Kindermusik program has been in the top five percent of all such programs internationally for a decade. One cornerstone is an intergenerational music class for infants, caregivers and senior sisters who reside at the Provincial House. There's a digital piano lab and a performance space with a donated grand piano. Many students begin with us as infants in parent/child classes and continue into instrumental instruction. One family has been with us for 18 of our 20 years! Our dedicated staff of seven tailors lessons to student strengths and interests. We encourage a lifelong love of music with students up to 89 years young. From early childhood classes to group piano classes, ensemble playing and private instruction, our emphasis is on process rather than product - experiencing the joy of musical competence and collective music-making. Recitals give students the opportunity to play for family and friends. These performances foster self-confidence, self-discipline, poise, motor skills, listening skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving and higher-order thinking. Teachers arrange for students to play for each other; two guitar ensembles make music together. Group piano classes often involve children who have already experienced years of music-making as graduates of our Kindermusik program. At Carondelet Music Center, the most fundamental gain is enrichment of the human spirit and a sense of musical community. This is important to me as a Sister of St. Joseph, since my community sponsors the center. I come from a long lineage of sister-musicians who valued artistic development and musical expression. We have celebrated our 20th anniversary with many events, from an intergenerational concert to a carol sing, a Valentine recital and a duet recital. Sister Anne Bryan Smollin, CSJ, director of the diocesan Office of Counseling for Laity, offered a parent lecture series on family stress, communication and self-care. (Cont. on page 24) Spring 2012 CSJ Newsline 23 (Cont. from page 23) Since starting the center, I've completed a doctoral degree from Columbia University in early childhood music education. Many of our children have participated in my research studies at the center; I've presented papers at conferences around the world. In July, I will travel to Greece to present the findings of my study on our intergenerational music class to the International Society of Music Education. This study revealed that, while there was no significant change in cognitive function or depression levels for senior participants with memory loss, the joy of all the participants was undeniable. As one sister commented, "Just being with the babies is so wonderful!" This speaks to the humanizing power of music and its inherent socializing force. As Sisters of St. Joseph, our charism and mission focuses on relationships: neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. I can't think of a better way to address that than through the vibrant musical community that Carondelet Music Center fosters. (Sister Patricia is director of Carondelet Music Center. Marcella Hall Dedicated The “Ground B Ladies” have dedicated their living space at the Provincial House to Sister Mary Marcella and have given it the name Marcella Hall. Sister Marcella was one of the first Sisters to supervise and care for the women when they came to reside at the Provincial House. In the upper left is a picture of the women: Mary, Dolores, Kathleen, Peggy, and Lillian. They are standing by a picture of themselves and a plaque commemorating the occasion. To the right are some of the Sisters who were present for the dedication. Shown with the picture of Sister Marcella are Sister Margaret Totten and Sister Sandra Tripp who minister to and share life with the women on a daily basis. 24 CSJ Newsline Spring 2012 by Annmarie Yellico, CSJA (Alb) b b CSJ Associates Gather to Honor Sister Joanne The Albany Associates gathered on May 11, 2012 at the 76 Diner in Latham to celebrate S. Joanne St. Hilaire’s 60th Jubilee and to honor her for her unwavering commitment to all CSJA’s. Kileen Stone, CSJA offered a blessing prayer in which we were reminded of our God’s desire to be one among us, a God who not only nurtures us, but who “sets the table.” Amidst much wonderful and stirring conversation, laughter, toasts, good food and exemplary wait staff service, we enjoyed communion, we “breathed in and out God’s unifying love.” S. Joanne summed up her own expression of gratitude for sixty years of religious life, particularly her friendship with CSJA’s, by using the words of Jesus, “……so that my own joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.” (John 5:11). It was in this context that God visited our gathering of twenty-four in a most lavish manner. The waiter announced to us that an anonymous benefactor, a gentleman who had known S. Joanne from his past, had satisfied the bill for our gathering. Though we pressed to know the identity of the gentleman, it was not to be revealed. Thus, we were blessed even further by God’s generosity as shown through the action of a man whose life had been touched by S. Joanne. Filled with thankful hearts, we wondered what could be done to show our gratitude. Almost immediately, the phrase “pay it forward” was heard repeated from all sides of our table. Fr. Medaille challenges us in Maxim 89, “Profit from the opportunities that arise to practice the general virtues in their highest degree.” So, we did. Taking the money we had allotted for our dinners, we chose to make a donation to our Peruvian mission. In addition, a Mass of thanksgiving will be offered at the Provincial House for our benefactor, a man of God not unlike our patron, St. Joseph who did not seek notoriety, but served God in obscurity. As daughters of St. Joseph, God has called us to bring unity and reconciliation to a world that is rife with division and self-interest. In responding to that call some sixty years ago, S. Joanne St. Hilaire has freely given herself to bringing this charism to others. We, the Albany CSJA’s, are filled with gratitude for having had the opportunity to both witness and share in the fruits of her labor. Spring 2012 CSJ Newsline 25 Nicaragua and the “Mission of Hope” by Cathy Kruegler, CSJ Each year I come home from Nicaragua, and friends ask, “Are you going back next year?” I always have to say “I don’t know; yo no se, si Dios quiere!” if God wishes! My heart is full of gratitude to each of you because this year, I was able to return thanks to the generosity of the CSJ community. I am so grateful and so proud of my students: Emily, Aislyn, Sarah, Haley and my goddaughter, Jeriliss. It is such a joy to see them connect with our Nicaraguan family and grow to love them and desire to return again one day. On the afternoon of the first full day, I was assigned to work with a great team at the Velez Paiz Children’s Hospital. Our task was to clean, caulk and spackle in preparation for the painting team the next day. This hospital was affected by the last earthquake, but the hospital has been in use, and each year it is in need of painting and repair. As group translator, I found Manuel Lopez from the General Office who brought us to the two huge rooms. We had to work around the moms and babies, and so many would poke their heads in to see who we were and what we were doing. One mom, Marisol, told us she had no food while she was pregnant, and now her three-month old daughter is having complications with her breathing. Nutrition is a constant worry for moms here. We finished our work and went back to our Mission of Hope Center. When we returned, the school children and the neighborhood kids were already in our yard for playtime and some organized activities. I was so focused on getting cleaned up that I didn’t look around the yard to see who was there. My student, Aislyn, was already there with her sponsor child, Ronald. His mom, Ninfa Espinoza, recognized me as I crossed the yard, so Aislyn called me over. Ninfa hugged me and said,” I remember last year you sponsored a shelter for us in memory of your Dad, Jaime, correcto? I still have his photo on my door,” she said. Ninfa told Aislyn and me that her old shelter had a hole in the roof, and during every rainfall it leaked. “Things have gotten better for us now that we have a new shelter. All my children now have sponsors and are in school, and I am doing cleaning work in the school.” I was amazed that she remembered me after just one afternoon a year ago and was touched by her gratitude for a shelter the size of a C-Wing bedroom at the PH. My next “mission moment” was meeting Ivania Duarte. She is the principal of Collegio Publica Chiquilistagua, which is the public school in our town. This is the first year we have partnered with this school. I was there the first of three days, cleaning and painting and replacing broken windows. Ivania told us that they began the school in 1994 with 300 children, and today it is a K-12 school with 1,280 students and the same amount of space! Now K-6 comes until noon and 7-12 comes at 2:00 p.m., so the limited space is shared. Ivania is one great woman who is taking on a huge work with these poorest of the poor young people. (Cont. on page 27) 26 CSJ Newsline Spring 2012 (Cont. from page 26) About mid-week, I had time to spend with my own sponsor child, Iara Yzamar Solano Perez. Iara’s mom, Arlen, grew up in Ciudad Sandino during the contra war. I remember Sister Barb Ginter talking about the place as a town that had suffered great violence. Arlen survived and is now studying to be a secretary by day and cleaning by night. Her sister-in-law takes care of her two beautiful daughters. I sent Iara a simple, white dress with last summer’s delegation, for her First Communion. At first I was afraid I wouldn’t see her at all this year. It was late in the annual event, and she still had not arrived. Then I saw Iara. She had come to visit and was wearing the dress that fit perfectly! It was a joy for me to introduce my goddaughter, Jeriliss, to Iara. We had a wonderful visit that was all too short. I have such a difficult time saying good-bye, wondering whether or not I will ever see her again. Lastly, on our free day, we visited the UNESCO International Ruins of Old Leon that date back to 1524. In the process, after all my trips to Nicaragua, I was finally able to follow the path of our dear Sister Barbara Ginter whose ministry and beloved people were in Leon. I soaked up every sight. STUDENTS’ MISSION MOMENTS Aislyn: We were in Nicaragua this year for Ash Wednesday and the First Sunday of Lent. I was talking to a mom after Mass, and her little boy came running toward her. He remembered that he hadn’t bowed at the altar, so he went back and bowed. The people have such strong faith! (Grade 12) Emily: I just love the children and the people. They have nothing, but they are so happy. I love the music, and everyone sings out with his/her whole heart at Church. I will be going to Bucknell College in the fall. I was pretty sure this was the college for me, but when I heard they have Bucknell Brigades to Nicaragua, I was certain. I have to return. Also, I had the honor of meeting the archbishop of Nicaragua. He was so simple and hospitable, taking photos with us. When we left, the archbishop drove off in a beat-up, pick-up truck! It was not at all as I had expected. (Grade 12) Sarah: I love playing with the children in our yard. I love my sponsor child. I will be studying premed at Duke University and plan on returning to do medical work. (Grade 12) Haley: I took French in school. I didn’t know any Spanish. However, I taught the kids English, and they taught me Spanish. I was surprised to learn that I really didn’t need language to communicate. I learned that smiles and hugs and stickers and friendship go a long way. (Grade 11) Jeriliss: I have always wanted to be a pediatrician, so I wanted to go to Nicaragua to see the medical needs. I was the translator for the medical team that visited a community of sisters. They have very young candidates and have had no medical care in years, no immunizations, no simple medication. I want to come back next year, and I want to return after I become a doctor.
