Enduring Heritage
The Ludowici legacy of Old World craftsmanship started 400 years ago in Rome where
the Ludovisi family became famous for its expertly crafted roof tile. As European
demand grew, the family moved to Germany and the name was changed to the
Germanized Ludowici. In the late 1800’s Carl Ludowici moved the family and his
Old World craftsmanship to America establishing a roof tile company in Chicago.
Ludowici Roof Tile Company prospered. Eventually all Ludowici tile making operations
were consolidated into the New Lexington, Ohio factory. With over 120 years of
experience, Ludowici has grown into the industry leader for clay roof tile.
Today, Ludowici produces a limitless array of colors and profiles to fit vast architectural
styles. Ludowici’s unique custom capabilities, allows architects and designers to create
durable, inspiring architecture utilizing a truly unlimited pallete. With a life span over
100 years a Ludowici roof is not only beautiful but the most sustainable and green roof
available.
Since 1888 Ludowici has been protecting buildings large and small. From bungalows,
mansions, commercial, university, government or military buildings Ludowici roof tiles
are the sensible and sustainable choice.

Beautiful
Setting the building apart
Clay tile roofs have been the preferred choice of discerning architects, designers,
and owners, for centuries because of the natural warmth and permanent beauty
of clay. Since 1888, Ludowici has been the premier producer of clay roof tiles. Its
portfolio includes some of the most beautiful buildings and homes in the world.
For many, Ludowici tile is the element that defines the look of the building. All
across the US, thousands of structures illustrate the benefits of a Ludowici clay
tile roof: unique and lasting beauty.
Finding the right match
Selecting the roof, which is 50-70% of the visual impact, is a critical component of building design. The roof often defines the character and the tone of the
building. Architects and designers are often challenged with finding the perfect
match to achieve the right look and image they wish to convey.
Ludowici’s 120 years of proven ability can provide limitless product offering to
find that perfect solution. Ludowici has the largest range of standard shapes,
colors, textures, and accessories, plus the ability to fully customize profile,
color, and finish, for that perfect tile for each building’s image and performance.
Ludowici’s specialists are available to assist you in profile and color development
for your perfect tile.

Sustainable and Efficient
Reclaimed Clay Quarry
Being Green is finding the most sustainable
and efficient use of natural resources
Ludowici is the choice for sustainable and efficient roofing.
Thinking ahead
With an expected life of over 100 years, and because they require no
maintenance and reroofing every 10 years, Ludowici tiles offer the lowest life
cycle costs in the industry.
Fighting waste
Ludowici tiles are made of local and natural materials (clay and water) through a
unique process which creates no waste. Moreover, all Ludowici products are 100%
recyclable. The tiles are chemically inert, making them forever safe. They may be
reused to create a beautiful vintage roof and at the end of their lifespan they can
be recycled and used as filler and filter components for future construction.
Reducing energy consumption
Energy savings exceeding 20% are common with a Ludowici roof1. With 28
standard colors (and the capability of making more) that meet a Solar Reflective
Index (SRI) of greater than 29, Ludowici offers proven energy efficiency without
limiting color choices. Finally, explore Ludowici’s rain screen system to discover
more ways to save energy throughout the building envelope.

Peace of Mind for Generations
Most Experienced
Ludowici’s mission is to manufacture the best quality tile in the world. This quality
is achieved through the combination of the finest materials, centuries of
craftsmanship and excellence in manufacturing2.
Highest quality materials
Ludowici benefits from what’s considered to be the very best clay material in the
world thanks to its Ohio location. This clay is processed with the highest manufacturing standards. Ludowici uses better material, ground into smaller particles and
fired longer and at higher temperatures than any of its competitors.
Best Warranty
This quest for quality has several benefits. First, the tile is suited to all climates,
from cold arctic conditions to the heat of the tropics3. Second, the color, literally
vitrified into the tile, will never fade, leaving no avenue for moss or sun to alter
the roof. Finally, this blend of Old World craftsmanship and modern technology
allows Ludowici to stand behind the best warranty in the industry: 75 years.
120 year track record
But, more important than a written warranty, Ludowici roofs have endured the
test of time. Its tiles have routinely topped structures for over 120 years,
providing peace of mind for generations.

Selecting a Roof
A roof is an integral component to any building. In
addition to comprising 50 to 70% of the exterior’s
initial visual impact, it also sets the character, style,
and tone of the architecture. Ludowici has 30
standard profiles and limitless custom profiles to fit
the full range of architectural styles from Old World
to contemporary. Sixty standard colors and infinite
custom colors are available to coordinate with
unlimited building materials and finishes.
Selecting a Profile and Texture
In selecting a Ludowici roof, first select a tile profile. Any Ludowici color can be applied
to the various profiles, thus selecting a color should be secondary.
Tiles can be categorized in three groups:
Shingle tiles are tiles with small exposures and unique surface textures
ranging from smooth to rough. These tiles are often used on Old World
European styled buildings. Flat slab shingle tiles can be customized with
additional textures and warped to achieve a wide range of effects.
Interlocking tiles are a more economical choice for a flat tile. These
tiles come in six different textures to create unique looks from Old World to
contemporary. LudoSlate TM tile is lightweight and has the texture and colors
of natural slate at a lower cost and weight.
Barrel tiles come in two varieties. Two piece Mission barrel tiles are the
true authentic look of France, Italy and Spain. Spanish tiles (also referred to
as one piece “S” tiles) have a slightly lower barrel and are less expensive.

Selecting Colors & Blends
Color is one of the most important aspects of selecting a roof. Clay red is the base color
of all Ludowici roof tiles. All other colors are applied to the base tile at over 2000° F via
a ceramic glazing process. This results in a permanent finish that will not fade or flake
off. Colors will not lighten, darken or change from exposure to the elements throughout
the entire life of the building.
Many roofs are a blend of two or more colors. By mixing colors, a wide range of looks
can be achieved from a subtle range of tones to a striking blend of colors. If a color is
unable to be located to meet the aesthetic needs of discerning customers, Ludowici Roof
Tile can develop a custom color. Ludowici’s ceramic engineers create over 200 custom
colors a year.
Selecting Accessories
Trim is the third element that defines the overall look of the roof. Ludowici offers a wide
range of trim from the stylized ornate 206 and 211 to the clean and simple lines of the
V-Hip/Ridge and Circular Covers. Ludowici trim are designed to be compatible with all
profiles.
Ludowici Roof Tile continues to produce numerous historic trim parts as well as custom
trim in addition to standard trim parts. Please contact your Ludowici Roof Tile
representative for more detailed information regarding your needs.

Shingle Tile Textures
All of Ludowici’s shingle tiles come with a specific texture that helps define the tile. Custom
textures can also be applied to match historic applications or to meet a customer’s specific
needs. Textures reduce glare reflecting off the tile and allow the true colors to show through.
Many tile textures are applied by hand which allows each tile to have a unique handmade look.

Shingle Tile Installation Options
Shingle tiles are typically installed in straight rows with the vertical joints between the tiles in a
running bond. The rustic shingle tiles have built-in variations in length to create a minimal
stagger. To create more texture on the roof and add to the rustic look, all of Ludowici’s shingle
tiles can be laid in a staggered pattern. Booster tiles can be randomly added to the field to
create even more texture giving the roof a true old-cottage feel.
Standard Installation
The tiles are laid in straight rows.
Staggered Installation
Tiles are laid with a slight offset of up to 1” giving the
roof a more rustic look.

Additional tiles are installed randomly in the field to
give an irregular look reminiscent of old cottages in
England.

Interlocking Tile
Ludowici’s collection of interlocking tiles, while quietly elegant and refined, makes an
impressive statement on virtually any architectural style. Each tile features a
different surface texture with side interlocks. The graceful proportions and classic
aesthetics make them a favorite of architects. The simple design and larger scale
provide the benefits of efficient and virtually problem free installation. Their few pieces
per square also mean a more economical installation. Ludowici’s 14” tiles weigh 900 lbs
per square while the larger 16” tiles are only 800 lbs per square.

French Tile
Ludowici’s French low profile interlocking tile was introduced in the 1890’s. A favorite of
discriminating architects, it is one of the most sculptured and dimensional products in
Ludowici’s line. Large and durable, French tiles have deep locks on all four sides, plus
two prominent flutes on the surface for dramatic aesthetics as well as fast drainage.
When applied to a roof, these flutes produce an unusual shadow play effect for a highly
refined appearance. The 102/206 trim group of fittings are designed to coordinate with
French field tile to produce a finished and detailed appearance.

The most popular tile in Ludowici’s product line, Spanish tile is prized for its simple,
one-piece barrel design which provides a pattern of distinctive ripples across the roof.
Often synonymous with clay roof tile, Spanish tile enhances virtually any style of
architecture from small bungalows to large public institutions. While seen most often in
Clay Red, imaginative architects and designers have chosen to explore a wide range of
colors and blends. Ludowici’s Impressionist Series of colors applied on Spanish tile

Barrel Tile Textures
The standard finish on Ludowici’s Mission tile is smooth. Varied textures can be applied to match
historic applications or to meet a customer’s specific design requirements. The use of textures
results in decreased glare off the tile and enhances the tile’s true color. For a truly custom feel,
Ludowici craftsmen can individually hand-slush the tile to enhance their texture and depth.
The standard finish on Spanish tile is smooth. All finishes, except those done by hand, can also
be applied to Spanish tiles.

Historic Tile Matching Process
In 2007 East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta decided to expand their clubhouse for the PGA Tour
Championship. Wanting the addition to appear seamless and match the existing 103 year old
clubhouse the architect contacted Ludowici Roof Tile, the only company with the skills, colors
and product range to match the existing roof.
Ludowici worked with the architect to select color samples from the existing roof representative
of the full color range installed.
To achieve an exact color and texture match Ludowici developed and produced a 14 color blend.
Ludowici’s field representative worked with the roofers and architect to assure the new roof was
installed with the same color blend and staggered layup to achieve a perfect match.

Color
Color is one of the defining elements of a Ludowici roof that sets Ludowici apart from other
roofing products. Unlike asphalt, wood, concrete, and synthetic roofing materials, Ludowici
colors do not fade, spald, effloresce or significantly change color over time. Ludowici colors are
comprised of mineral frits and pigments that are sprayed onto tiles and then fired on at over
2,000° F. All colors come with Ludowici’s standard 75 year warranty. For a copy of this warranty
please visit Ludowici.com
To fully see the range in the color(s) you are using, request at least three samples from your
Ludowici representative. When reviewing color samples remember to view them at several
different times of the day. As the sun moves across the sky striking the tiles at different angles
perception of the color will change. Be sure to have samples of the other components of the
exterior skin available, such as stucco, rock, brick and fascia color, to compare with the roof
selection. This will further assure a harmonious appearance that meets your expectations. If you
don’t see a color that meets your aesthetic needs contact your Ludowici representative for
assistance in developing a custom color. Ludowici Roof Tile creates over 200 custom colors a
year.
Solar Reflectance Index (SRI)
The ability of a roof to reflect solar radiation is an important component in the overall green
aspects of the structure.
The US Green Building Council and Energy Star have set a minimum Solar Reflectance Index
(SRI) of 29 for roofing. The SRI is calculated from physical testing of solar reflectance and
thermal emittance. An SRI of 29 or higher will save the building owner money by reducing
energy costs associated with cooling and give longer AC unit life, as a result of decreased air
conditioning loads. In addition, cool roofs combat the urban heat island effect caused by roofs
and other non-reflective surfaces absorbing and trapping solar radiation or heat.
For colors that have a SRI > 29 1 LEED credit is available.

Range
Part of the charm and character of a clay tile roof is the subtle
range of color within a given color. Because of positioning in
the kiln and the nature of ceramic glazes all Ludowici colors
have range. To fully see the range in selected color(s),
customers should request and review at least three samples. To
ensure an even distribution of the range across the entire roof,
at least four pallets should be blended during installation.
Clay Red
The base or natural clay color of all Ludowici tiles is Clay Red.
A standard color from day one at Ludowici, Clay Red integrates
well with a wide range of building styles and finishes. Natural
variations in the clay and firing process give today’s Clay Red a
subtle range from dark orange, to red, to reddish brown.
Due to variations in the clay mine and firing techniques, Clay
Red used on projects older than 50 years of age tend to be a
lighter shade of orange. To match these historic tiles, Ludowici
applies a matte orange color to new Clay Red pieces. Ludowici
professionals are skilled in assisting customers with tile
matching and replacement needs for historic or older
structures.
Ebony Mist
One way to achieve a variegated, aged look is to apply Ebony Mist. Ludowici has three
variations of this application; full range going from nearly full coverage Ebony to tiles with just
a dusting of Ebony on them. Light to medium Ebony Mist has a minimal aged look, while
medium to heavy gives the centuries old look of tiles in the English countryside. Ebony Mist is
applied by hand and intentionally has range. To achieve a natural blend without hot spots, tiles
should be blended from at least four pallets during installation.
To achieve other effects or variations of the Old World look, all of Ludowici’s matte colors can be
applied in a mist effect similar to Ebony Mist. Contact your Ludowici representative for
assistance.

Blends
While all of Ludowici’s colors look spectacular individually,
they have been developed to be used in a wide range of
blends. Possibilities range from subtle combinations of aged
European looks to more dramatic blends making a striking
statement. Wider variations in color than normal (within a
single color) can be achieved by blending similar colors
together. Contact your Ludowici representative for assistance
in developing a blend meeting your design specifications.

TM
Reminiscent of the techniques perfected by 19th century
French painters Ludowici offers extraordinarily beautiful
finishes. The Impressionist Series utilizes two or three
complementary shades applied randomly over a base color to
create the patina of a century old roof. The complete
randomness of the color application ensures that no two tiles
are identical. This produces an effect that is harmonious and
aesthetically pleasing as the changing light of day dances
across the roofline, boldly highlighting the intricate interplay
of colors.

Standard blends can be selected or custom blends can be
created using different percentages of Impressionist Series

Bonnet Hip Rolls, Sprocket Hips & Rounded Ridge
3

1
Bonnet hip rolls are inspired by the cottages and estates
of rural England. These pieces nestle into the field of the
tiles to give a seamless, more organic finish to the hips.
The sprocket hip rolls provide a sharper edge to the hip
roll, typically used with formal shingle tiles. Rounded
interlocking ridge tiles are the companion ridge typically
used with bonnet hips.

Curved Roofs
Crafting tile to fit curved roofs has been a specialty of Ludowici’s since the late 1800’s.
To accommodate the geometry of a curved roof, Ludowici artfully tapers tile to become
progressively smaller from the bottom to the top of a curved roof. These graduated tiles
are custom designed to fit a specific roof. This custom process requires Ludowici to send
technicians to the jobsite to take detailed field measurements of the physical structure.
Ludowici craftsmen use these drawings to design patterns and molds for each row of
tiles. Graduated tiles are then pressed from these molds and are finished to match the
rest of the roof tiles. Ludowici crafts graduated tiles to match all of its tile profiles.

NeXclad System
TM
Wall Cladding
“The economy of the tile is what led us to the product but we can’t imagine the
project with another cladding now.” Matt Catterall, Project Architect
University Housing-Austin,TX
Ludowici’s NeXclad SystemTM offers a lightweight alternative to traditional brick or panel
cladding. Installed direct to deck or in a rain screen system, NeXclad SystemTM is an
energy efficient and sustainable alternative to other wall cladding systems. At 10 lbs per
square foot, the NeXclad SystemTM weighs 75% less than traditional brick. This
results in lower installation and structure costs which reduces the building’s carbon
footprint. With no mortar joints, NeXclad SystemTM can be installed quicker and easier
year round in all climates.
NeXclad SystemTM provides architects an infinite range of looks. A wide range of
textures, over 60 standard colors and infinite custom colors are available. Ludowici’s
standard 75 year warranty (which includes color fading) offers peace of mind that the
building cladding will not fade or deteriorate.
With less weight, lower installation costs, maintenance free and a long durable life,
NeXclad SystemTM is the most cost effective sustainable choice for a building’s exterior
skin.
