Pat Dolan Affiliated with The Drawing Studio as a teaching artist since 1997, Pat also is the Program Director of The Drawing Studio’s senior art outreach program (OATS) and co-director of ARTMoves, outreach classes incorporating movement and art. She also has taught art classes at Pima Community College since 1993. She was a resident and member of Rancho Linda Vista Artist Community in Oracle, Ariz. from 1979 to 1995. Pat earned a BS in Art History from Trinity College, Wash. DC, in 1969. In 1970, she completed an Independent Study course in Drawing from the Academia di Belle Arte in Florence, Italy, and then earned her masters degree in Visual Design from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 1998 she completed a threeyear program in Advanced Initiations in Shamanism at the Foundation for Artist Statement Shamanic Studies in California, and Shamanic Healing in 2005 at the Pat Dolan Tacheria School for Spiritual www.patdolan.net Direction in Tucson. My work comes out of my love of drawing and my spiritual connection to the natural world. I draw because it is a way for me to connect to the moment. When I draw, I experience energy flowing through me on to the paper. I feel as though I am meditating, being in that space between thoughts. In these moments I walk out of linear time and am filled with a sense of grace. My art is about connections; I feel with the animals that I draw. In my work, I am giving voice to the voiceless endangered animals, birds and their habitats. I feel their essence being expressed by my mark making. The animals in my work are visual prayers asking the viewer to remember that once they felt a deep connection to these soulful beings. Teaching Teaching is my passion. It thrills me to bear witness to my students growing in their craft and finding their unique artistic voices. Students come to work with me when they want to loosen up and become more expansive in their exploration of color. 2 In addition to teaching art at The Drawing Studio and Pima Community College, Pat also has taught numerous art courses – from pastel, expressive drawing, mixed media, intuitive color, animal spirits, art history and mixed media to life drawing, watercolor, photography, video, lithography, art appreciation, and basic design – at Central Arizona College, the University of Arizona, DePaul University in Chicago, Western Illinois University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and in the early 1990s served as artist mentor for MFA candidates at Vermont College. Sister J’s Jag Danu Returns Her artwork has been exhibited in many invitational, solo and juried shows over the years, the most recent being: 2013 “Seeing the Santa Ritas,” and as a featured Master Artist in “The Paper Ball,” at The Drawing Studio; 2012 “Drawing The Perfect Circle,“ The Drawing Studio; 2011 “Works on Paper” merit of excellence award, Tubac Art Center; and 2011 “Playing with Fire,” Tubac Art Center. If the answer is yes, a workshop might be the place to start. The Tucson Pastel Society sponsored my very first pastel workshop – five days of wonderful instruction from Richard McKinley! The first day of the workshop I was terrified because as a new TPS member I didn’t know anyone, had no idea what to expect or what was expected and I had only completed four pastel paintings since my retirement in 2012. That workshop was invigorating. The TPS members in the workshop were friendly, talented, encouraging and fun and I believe the knowledge I gained from Mr. McKinley improved my paintings tremendously. There have been subsequent TPS workshops and I’ve gathered new insights from each and every one. If you share my goal of becoming a better pastel artist, sign up for one of our workshops - TPS offers four each year. Two are for members-only and two are for members and the public. The next workshop is free to members only and will be taught by Deb Steinberg on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 (See Page 6 in this newsletter for details). Phil Starke will be with us in December and Dawn Emerson will join us in March 2016. We are looking for an artist to teach our spring members-only workshop. We have so many talented and knowledgeable artists within our organization that it would be a bonus to have one of you teach this class. The focus of the class could be on any topic related to pastel painting – design, composition, the business of selling your work, how to create the illusion of depth, space or texture within a painting, art terminology – the topics are boundless. Please let Becky or me know if you are interested in teaching one of our workshops. So, how did I become the TPS Workshop Chair? Well, recently Kitty Tobin stepped down from the role and Becky Neideffer asked me if I’d be interested in taking the position. I said yes, after she assured me that she and Kitty would be there to guide me along the way – and they both have been true to their word. Being on the board is new to me, but the experience is similar to being a member of TPS – friendly people fostering growth and encouragement to ensure success. Maybe being a board member is something you’d enjoy doing in the future. Think about it and let Becky know where your passions lie. ~ Diane FALL OPEN STUDIO TOURS AROUND TUCSON Local artists will be presenting three Open Studio Tours this fall.
