In Traditional Acapulco, you can stroll along the Malecón and the
Zócalo. Visit the church, gazebo, book stands, street vendors and

classic beach destination that was booming in the golden age of
Mexican cinema and Hollywood.
In contrast, Zona Dorada, features a multitude of modern luxury hotels,

handicrafts.
The newer Acapulco Diamante area situated from Puerto Marques Bay

The climate is tropical and humid with sun the greater part of the year,

San Diego Fort – This is the most historic building in Acapulco, originally
built in 1616 to protect the city from pirate attacks, since the luxury items
brought from Asia attracted the attention of English and Dutch pirates.
The fort was destroyed on several occasions, but it was rebuilt in 1783,
and this is the building that can be seen today. In the present times, the
fort serves as the Museo Histórico de Acapulco (Acapulco Historical
Museum), which shows the port's history from the pre-Hispanic period
until independence. Open daily from 9:30 to 6:00. Closed Mondays.
Diego Rivera Mosaic Mural - The Dolores Olmedo House is noted for
the murals by Diego Rivera. It was created in 1956, made with colored
mosaics, stones and seashells. You can appreciate the mural located
on the outside wall called Exekatlkalli, a sculpture-painting where the
Gods Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc, important deities of the Aztec culture,
can be appreciated.
Acapulco Bay – Also known as Santa Lucia Bay is ringed with high-rise
hotels and surrounded by mountains covered in tropical vegetation. The
bay has incomparable scenic beauty and it is compared to Rio de
Janeiro and Hong Kong.
Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (Cathedral of Our Lady of
Solitude) - dominates the Zócalo Plaza with is imposing architecture,
twin towers and white facade. It was built in 1930 ecorated in a simple
Byzantine style.
Calandrias (horse-drawn carriages) - Brightly decorated calandrias
decorated with multi-colored balloons regularly parade the Costera
Miguel Alemán.

Zócalo - The main public square and center of the "old" (original) part of
Acapulco is lined with shade trees, cafés and shops. It is just in front of
the cathedral.

Roqueta Island – Located just 10 minutes from Playa Caleta or Caletilla
by boat. Take the glass bottom boat and admire the rich marine life and
the underwater shrine of the Patron Saint of Fishermen, the Virgin of
Guadalupe submerged in the bottom at just 7 m (23 ft). On the island,
the trail leads to the lighthouse, and then to the restaurants. The island
has quiet beaches, ideal spots for scuba diving and snorkeling.
La Quebrada.- The popular show, features spectacular dives from a
high cliff where divers, sometimes in pairs, plunge 135 feet into an inlet
that is only 22 feet wide and 13 feet deep . The tradition started in 1934.
At night, they carry flaming torches. Enjoy this spectacular sight daily at
12:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and 10:30 p.m. 365
days a year.
Coyuca Lagoon - Located only 10 kilometers from the Bay of Acapulco
the lagoon is 10 kilometers long and a maximum width of 5 kilometers.
This jewel hides four little islands: Grande, la de Filipinas, Los Pájaros,
La Montosa, La Pelona y Caballos. The exuberant tropical vegetation
and mangroves are home to over 250 bird species. It is an excellent
place for water sports like water ski, weakeboard or fishing. You can
take a trip through the mangroves with a native boat and catch a
glimpse of tropical birds and turtle, a unique experience.
CICI Water Park - At this water wonderland and fun-filled park, children
will go wild over the water slides, big wave pool, giant water slide, and
live show with seals and dolphins, and swim with dolphins. Another
attraction is the Skycoaster, diving from more than 100 feet and falling
to the earth at 130 kilometers per hour. Schedule: Daily from 10:00 to
18:00 hrs.

Papagayo Park - It is a protected natural area with more than 200
thousand square meters. It has rides, skating rink, auditorium, three
artificial lakes, paddle boats and bicycle path. Papagayo Adventure
Park, offers new experiences as climbing wall, free jump, aqua splash,
euro bungee, spider zone, ice rink, and xtreme course, among others.
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Rides are closed on Tuesdays.
Guerrero Cultural Institute - Features cultural exhibits, paintings and
photographs, as well as collections of artifacts and relics of ancient
cultures of the State of Guerrero.
Bungee Jumping - Operated by a leader company in Bungy Jumping in
the world. With 16 years of operation and more than 15 million
customers. The jump is from 165 feet high and you have a gorgeous
panoramic view of the bay. There is a restaurant, beach club,
swimming pool with waterfalls and a bar. Open daily from 12:00 to
02:00 hrs.

Turtle Protection Program in Acapulco - From June through December,
visitors can observe the nightly arrival of female turtles that leave the
ocean to lay their eggs at Revolcadero Beach and in Pie de la Cuesta
beaches. And from October through January you can watch the small
turtles returning to the sea.

Acapulco Botanical Garden – It is located in the Southern Sierra Madre
Mountains, which surround Acapulco at an altitude of between 660 and
1300 feet (200 and 400 meters) above sea level. The garden includes 6
hectares of subtropical deciduous forest. It has very comfortable trails
where you can observe the two creeks, a collection of palms and
cycads, desert plants, hardwoods as well as flowering and fruit trees,
shrubs, heliconias and gingers, bromeliads, aeroids, ferns and vines
among others. Along the trails you can also watch the regional fauna.
There is a souvenir shop and an amphitheater used for concerts and
conferences. Open daily from 9:00 to 18:00 hrs.
The Chapel of Peace – Located on Las Brisas, 402 meters above sea
level, the cross rises 42 meters. It is surrounded by lush vegetation with
a beautiful panoramic view of the bay.
Tres Palos Lagoon – It is located between Puerto Marques and the
international Airport, across from Barra Vieja beach. This huge
freshwater lagoon (9 miles long and 3.6 miles wide) is home to several
species of fish. This freshwater lagoon is home to a diverse species of
tropical birds and it is surrounded by an imprsive mangrove. Several
small boats are at hand to take a tour of the lagoon with a guide who will
show you the unspoiled nature of the area. In case you are more
adventurous, you can rent your own jet ski and explore the canals
around the lagoon. You can try a mud-mask treatment, since it is said
the lagoon has a natural nutrient-filled mud that seems to tighten the
skin. There is also horseback riding in the surrounding area.
There is a Turtle Camp in Playa Hermosa, where you can meet, learn
much more about the sea turtle.
Puerto Marquez – It is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. The bay is
surrounded by exuberant vegetation and tropical birds. The
development with houses and condos includes a hotel and a number of
colorful restaurants serving regional specialties.

Campo de Tiro Acapulco – Es un club cinegético y de tiro que se ubica
en el Km. 25 de la carretera Acapulco-Pinotepa, a sólo 35 minutos de
la zona diamante.

Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra – The orchestra features outstanding
professional musicians. The Philharmonic Orchestra performs
approximately 24 concerts each year, in addition to sixty or more
concerts for children and special events. It is one of the best orchestras
in the country. It has shared the stage with world-class artists such as
Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Vadem Brodsky, Eugene Fodor,
Fernando de la Mora and Tania Libertad, among others.

get the tickets at the Casa de Cultura (Culture House).
Acapulco Shooting Range - A hunting and shooting club located at Km
25 of the Acapulco-Pinotepa road, just 35 minutes from Acapulco
Diamante.
Tehuacalco Zone - The site is on a hill surrounded by mountains, which
were worshipped by the Yope. It was occupied as a ceremonial site
from about 400CE to about 1100CE. It has a plaza surrounded by
various pyramid bases and other structures with a distinct construction
style, which consists of boulders with spaces between them filled in with
layers of flat rock and red clay. The site has four aspects, areas with
rock etchings, the surrounding mountain terrain, pyramidal structures
and caves in the hills with offerings. Located 50 minutes from Acapulco,
near Chilpancingo. There are various tours and scheduled trips.
Shedule: Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.
Palma Sola Archaeological Site – The site contains 18 petroglyphs
dating from 800 BC to 750 AD. You will spot dozens of designs ranging
from anthromorphological to zoomorphological images created by the
first settlers in the area. A steep, sturdy trail winds 400m uphill past the
petroglyphs, all marked by Spanish and English signs, and ending with
wonderful city views at more than 1,000 feet above sea level, definitely
worth the visit. It's about a 25-minute taxi ride from Old Acapulco.

Caleta y Caletilla – With a gentle Here you can take the glass bottom
boat to Roqueta Island, wich protects them from the high waves of the
Pacific Ocean, so they both have very gentle waves. You can rent
snorkel gear and enjoy dozens of stands and restaurants serving
snacks, seafood and refreshments.
Tamarindos – You can watch the fishermen leave in the morning.
Condesa - With strong waves that are perfect for skiing and parasailing,
Condesa Beach is famous for the restaurants, clubs, bars and discos.
Icacos - Here the waves are not too strong, and swimmers can have a
lot of fun.
Bonfil – A popular beach with surfers, since the wave quality is
described as “regional classic.”. It is also ideal for walking or horseback
riding. Additionally, it has excellent seafood restaurants where you can
enjoy the famous “pescado a la talla”.
Barra Vieja - A long beach that stretches for miles. The beach is
surrounded by small restaurants that offer delicious “pescado a la talla”.
You can enjoy a horseback riding, or ATV riding, or just walk along the
beach and watch the beautiful sunset.
Pie de la Cuesta – It is about 45 minutes north of Acapulco, is a lovely
stretch of tropical beach that extends for 17 kilometers between the
Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Coyuca Lagoon. It has extremely high
waves, so it has hoasted surfing events. Sometimes, you can spot
some whales and dolphins, making this beach a unique place to admire
the sunsets. It has numerous restaurants and several hotels. Here you
can rent a tour to Coyuca Lagoon.
Revolcadero – Lovely wide stretch of sandy beach. x Waves are large
and surfing is popular here, especially in summer, but a strong
undertow makes swimming dangerous. It is ideal for horseback riding.
The beach has seen a recent explosion in luxury tourism and residential
development.

the exclusivity and confort of Punta Diamante, or the secluded beaches

The variety offered in Acapulco restaurants make this resort one of the
most appealing beach destinations in the world.
Most of the restaurants have an outdoor terrace and many have
spectacular views of Acapulco Bay.
The port’s typical food is an inspiring crossbred gastronomy which
conjugates pre-Hispanic and European tastes. A result of this crossbred
is the famous pozole, a weighty bowl (pozolero) overflowing with a
white broth comprising lemon, oregano, onion, avocado, green chilli
and crackling fried delicious sardines. This dish is served traditionally
on Thursdays in many restaurants. Of course, you can also find
excellent sea food, and some of the most popular are: "Vuelve a la
Vida" (Come to life), consists of fish, shrimp, snails, octopus and clams,
marinated in lime juice, and "A la Talla Fish" (grilled fish Acapulco style).

SHOPPING IN ACAPULCO
In Acapulco shopping is a major pastime. The Costera is lined with
many boutiques selling high-fashion designs, jewelry stores, shoe
stores, endless numbers of shops and open-air markets where you can
buy many different artcrafts.
There are also nice and faboulous shopping malls like Gran Plaza,
Galerías Diana, and the new La Isla Shopping Village with important
department stores, boutiques and restaurants.
Guerrero State is known for hand-painted ceramics, objects made from
palo de rosa wood, bark paintings depicting scenes of village life and
local flora and fauna, and embroidered textiles. You can also find very
good silver jewelry
NIGHTLIFE IN ACAPULCO
Acapulco is definitely the place to go out and have a good time!.
Acapulco is home to world class nightlife and clubs, and they open late
and may stay open until sunrise. Many of the bars keep the same
closing hours.
One way to start the night is enjoying the spectacular dive show at La
Quebrada, with the divers climbing a rocky crag about 115 feet above
sea level; the majestic dive at night is with lit by torches
Beside, you can enjoy Acapulco's dazzling and sophisticated
restaurants and night clubs with a one of a kind view of Acapulco Bay,
with its millions of lights reflecting in the water.

Acapulco International Center is strategically located in the heart of the

capacity of 2,000 people, an indoor theater with capacity for 1,200

Spirit
Scuba Diving in Acapulco - The best season for diving is from
November to February. During this time we have warm waters (82°F)
and best visibility. From March to May we have cold waters (75°- 65°F),
visibility is affected by plankton, but very nice dives. Piedra del Elefante,
Roqueta Island, Las Cuevas, La Piedra del Guano, Palmitas Beach, El
Hawaii, the Piedra de la Hierbabuena reefs, and Río de la Plata, a little
further down, are the best spots.
Snorkeling in Acapulco – You can enjoy snorkeling along the bay,
although the best place is near Boca Chica Hotel.
Surf in Acapulco – Playa Revolcadero and Playa Pie de la Cuesta, are
some of the best places for surfing with waves ranging between 2 and
8 meters high (six feet to twelve feet).
Windsurfing in Acapulco - Rentals are available at Caleta Beach, the
water sports center near the Zócalo, at Boca Chica Hotel and Icacos
Beach. Playa Condesa and Playa Tamarindos are ideal for beginners.
Parasailing – This activity was invented in Acapulco and this is probably
the best way you can admire the bay.
Water Sports in Acapulco - Waterskiing, it was virtually invented in
Acapulco; beginners will love the gentle waters of the Coyuca Lagoon
and Puerto Marqués. Swimming, the beaches along the bay are all
wonderful, but Caleta, Caletilla, Hornos and Roqueta Island beach are
the best for swimmers. Other sports, banana rides, jet ski and motor
boat rides are available at most of the beaches along Costera.
Bungee in Acapulco – Feel the adrenaline rush as you plunge in a free
150 feet jump, held only by the feet by a resistant and thick elastic band.

Skydive in Acapulco - With only 20 minutes of training, you can enjoy
the thrill of skydiving attached to a certified Tandem instructor.

Fishing in Acapulco - For deep-sea fishing, sailfish abounds in January,
February, May, June, July, and December; black and blue marlin in
January, May, and December; yellowfin tuna in January, August,
November, and December; wahoo in January, February, November,

November, and December; grouper, snook, barracuda, Spanish
mackerel, bonito, pompano, shark, red snapper, and other species

When you walk along the narrow, cobblestone streets of Taxco you do
feel you are in a different time around the 18th century. Taxco is
considered a "National Monument".

Working its rich silver veins, turned Taxco into one of the most important
mining centers in the New Spain. During the XVIII century, Don José de
la Borda came to town and he contributed to the culmination of the
mining industry and was the benefactor that built Santa Prisca
Cathedral.
Another important person in Taxco history, is William Spratling, who
arrived
in 1931, and thanks to his great skills as a designer combined with the
ability of the locals, he developed a unique way to work silver; hence,
Taxco creations are known worldwide.
It is one of the most picturesque places in Mexico and has been named
a Magic Town. Santa Prisca’s majestic beauty makes a contrast with
the simplicity of the small village’s white walls and red tile roofs.
Taxco has the project to become a City of Light, in the Master Plan, light
becomes the element that integrates both domestic and urban layers of
the city. Lighteam has traced streets and alleys that are articulated by
temples, architectural elements, ornamental details, public spaces, and
anecdotal evidence of Taxco’s identity to weave them into a narrative
sequence that both locals and tourists can follow through the suggested
promenade of 4 circuit. In an effort to enhance Taxco’s value as a tourist
attraction, temporary projections containing central motifs of life in
Taxco will be displayed throughout the circuits
The climate is mild with warm summers. December and January nights
can be cold.

Monumental Christ – ocated on the Cerro del Atachi (Hill of Atachi),
overlooking the city of Taxco. It is 3 meter (9 feet) hight, is one of
Taxco’s most prominent landmarks and an exceptional lookout point.

Casa Borda Cultural Center – A baroque style building from the 18th
century, that used to be inhabited by José de la Borda. Today, it is the
"Taxco Cultural Center" with a museum displaying religious and civil art
collections. It is also the forum for various cultural events.
O'Gorman Mural - Made by famous artist Juan O'Gorman using local
stone with its natural colors: red, green and yellow. The theme of the
mural is a tribute to Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor.
Viceroyal Art Museum of Taxco – Located in a 18th century building is
one of Taxco's oldest colonial houses. It exhibits religious art from the
colonial period, the pieces come from the parish of Santa Prisca and
San Sebastian, the former convent of San Bernardino of Siena and the
Chapel of Santa Veracruz. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00
hrs.
Guillermo Spratling Archeological Museum – Displays various items of
prehispanic cultures. Also, there is an area where the history of Taxco is
narrated through a series of photographs. There is a new room, "La
Sala de la Plata" (the silver room), with a collection of more than 140
pieces of silver, designs and drawings of Guillermo Sprating. Shedule:
Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs.
"Antonio Pineda" Silversmith Museum - Also known as the Crafts Patio.
Expose some fine pieces of Taxco’s silversmiths and displays
magnificent murals on the walls made by artist David Castaneda
Guerrero, telling the ancient history of Mexico. Moreover, the museum
also exhibits the works with which Mr. Pineda won national and
international awards thanks to his unique designs. Shedule: Tuesday to
Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs.

Convents
Parroquia de Santa Prisca y San Sebastián – The construction was
ordered by the Catalan miner José de la Borda, one of the most
prosperous of the region of Taxco in the 18th century. It was built
between 1751 and 1758 and is a truly magnificant Baroque jewel. The
church is constructed from pink stone and is highly decorated both
inside and out. In the interior there superb Churrigueresque altarpieces
and beautiful paintings made by Miguel Cabrera, a famous Mexican
painter. It has an outstanding dome cover with talavera tile.
Templo La Santísima Trinidad (The Holy Trinity Temple) – It was built in
the 16th century and is one of the oldest in Taxco. It was remodeled in
the 18th century, but there are some remains of the original structure.
San Bernardino de Siena Ex-convent – The Franciscan convent dates
back to 1592. It has kept its original courtyard and fountain but its
facade was restored in the 18th century in a neoclassical style. On the
back of the temple there are three statues dedicated to “Encruzado
Penitente” (person who walk in procession with a bundle of thorned
blackberry canes tied across their bare back and outstretched arms and
use a hood as to remain anonymous) and “Anima Taxqueña” (person
who have chains attached to their ankles that rattle as they walk, beside
they walk bent at the waist 90 degrees carrying small crosses or lighted
candles) figures that allude to the famous processions and ceremonies
of Holy Week that is held each year in Taxco.

Ex Hacienda del Chorrillo - The hacienda was constructed by soldiers
of Hernán Cortés between 1525 and 1534. It was built to take
advantage of the area’s abundant water supply to extract silver from
ore. Today it has been converted it into the Center of Fine Arts of the
Institute of Culture of Guerrero.
Former City Hall – It is an incredible building constructed in the 18th
century. It features a mural that recounts the history of Mexico. Beside
it is also furnished with period pieces that takes you back to the 18th
and 19th centuries.
Silver Workshops - They are open to visitors, and it is an incredible
opportunity to watch the silver artisans working to achieve unique
pieces of silver.
The Cable Car – The cable car runs half a mile high for almost 200
yards from Los Arcos to the Monte Taxco hotel giving you the chance to
enjoy the incredible panoramic views of the city.
Silver Tianguis - Every Saturday starting at 10:00 hrs, Taxco hosts a
busy tianguis, which runs right along the main street through town and
has dozens of stalls selling silver items like earrings, necklaces, rings,
etc.
Ixcateopan – This place keeps the remains of the last Aztec emperor
Cuahtemoc and also includes the “Resistencia Indígena” Museum.
Nowadays, only the civic-religious area can be seen which is formed by
several chambers and open spaces.
It has the richest marble deposits in the state, therefore, the whole city
is made of this stone: floors, pavement, stairways and facades.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is just three-hour drive from Acapulco and 40-minute flight
from México City. The superhighway Century XXI that connects
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo with Morelia, Michoacán, conveniently facilitates quick
access by car: from Mexico City in 6 hours, from Toluca, Querétaro and León
in 5 hours, and from Morelia in only 3 and a half to 4 hours.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo comprises two strikingly different areas within 4 miles of
each other. Ixtapa, a carefully planned resort was developed in 1972, it's
located on "Playa del Palmar" a two-mile long stretch of beautiful white sand,
home to several world-class hotels, condominium resorts, golf courses and a
modern marina with slips for 600 vessels.The resort also has shopping malls,
excellent boutiques, jewelry stores, handicraft shops and a nautical
atmosphere.
On the other hand, Zihuatanejo is a fishing village in a lovely bay that offers
visitors the opportunity to see the more traditional side of Mexico. The original
name was Cihuatlán which means "land of women" in nahuatl, because the
social organization was a matriarchy. This place was a sacred sanctuary for the
prehispanic nobility, and there are vestiges of very old civilizations as the
Olmecs who lived 3000 B.C. The quaint and pleasant village features
single-story white houses and cobblestone streets lined with hotels,
restaurants, and shops. This nice environment combine with the traditions and
charm of local people, is always an invitation to get around the town. Visitors
have the option to stay in one of the inviting little hotels in the center of town, or
in one of the small luxury hotels nestled along its lovely beaches.
More than 150 restaurants offer plenty of delicious choices, but Zihuatanejo is
the best place to try regional fish specialties like "Tiritas" are made of thin fish
strips marinated in lemon with red onions and sliced hot peppers, the regional
favorite, the the "pescadillas", “ceviche”, fish and shrimp tacos, and "pescado
a la talla”.
The average temperature is 82˚ F and sunshine 300 days a year. Even during
the June-September rainy season showers are brief and usually in the late
afternoon or evening.

Getting to
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo
BY PLANE
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport has recently expanded and
several of its areas are under renovation. It has multiple facilities
including car rental desks, a restaurant and "duty-free" shops. There
are non-stop flights from Mexico City, Toluca, Los Angeles, Houston,
Phoenix, Vancouver and Calgary. During the winter season the number
of flights increases.
BY CAR
Federal highway 200 connects Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo with Acapulco,
where modern “Autopista del Sol” connects with Mexico City. The
driving distance between Mexico City and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is 637
kilómetros (396 miles). An alternate route and relatively faster between
Mexico City and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is through Morelia with 667 km
(414 mi), in the Autopista Siglo XXI. There are first class bus services
between these cities and across the country.

Crocodile Reserve – Rich in vegetation, this lagoon-estuary next to
Playa Linda is home to native wildlife, like iguanas, birds and the
amazing crocodiles.

Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande (Archeology Museum) - This
small but highly recommended archaeology museum has 6 rooms set
around a central courtyard that illustrate human evolution from
prehistory to pre-Hispanic era. It provides the most relevant information
about the 54 archeological sites discovered in the “Costa Grande” area
where there are traces of the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Tarascan and
Mexica cultures. Open from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs.
Parque Aventura – This is a ranch surrounded by lush vegetation with
exotic animals in ther natural habitat. The adventure consists in a walk
in the trees from 4 to 9 meters (13 to 26 feet) altitude, going threw by
different techniques: a hung bridge, a liana, a footbridge, rocking trunks,
to finish flying threw the trees by zip-line. Open daily in high season and
during the weekends the rest of the year, from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs.
Parque Acuático “Magic World” - It has a number of swimming pools,
waterslides, a pirate ship, a village, toboggans, jacuzzies and many
other fun things to do for kids.
Delfinario “Delfiniti” – It gives visitors the chance to swimm with dolphins
and know these animals better. It has several programs: Swim with
dolphins, Encounter with dolphins, Delfiniti Kids, and Baby Dolphin. All
activities are carefully designed and monitored by marine biologists,
veterinarians and qualified personnel.
Park Bio La Escollera – The park includes an Insectarium, a botanical
garden with over 100 varieties of plants, flowers and fruit trees, an
impressive waterfall of more than 37 meters (121 feet) high, and the
Iguana Sanctuary with a unique atmosphere. The journey ends at the
reserve where you can watch animals in their natural habitat. Schedule:
Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.

King of Kings – There is a submerge bronze sculpture of a Christ King
in the waters of Ixtapa-Zihutanejo. It was made with keys collected in
the town. It weighs approximately a ton and a half, and stands just over
12 feet tall. It is submerged in front of Las Gatas Beach.
Ecoturistic Park "The Chanequera" - Here you can take a tour aboard a
“trajinera” (small boats normally rowed or poled) through the estuary.
The park is a reserve and spans about 50 hectares (123 acres) of
mangrove, and is ideal for nature lovers. There is a wide variety of birds,
and you will also see iguanas and crocodiles. The ride lasts
approximately an hour and a half.
El Refugio de Potosí – This is a center for wildlife conservation and
environmental education located just one mile from Playa Blanca and
15 miles from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. The park's vegetation mostly consists
of tropical forest with a high number of endemic species of plants,
reptiles, mammals and invertebrates. The ecological park features: An
Observation Tower 15 meters high with a panoramic view; a Tropical
Trail, where you can see native plants; a butterfly farm with ponds,
streams and waterfalls; an iguana sanctuary, with green and black
iguanas; a Macaw Sanctuary wtih a wildlife pond; and Hummingbirds
Sanctuary, with abundant plants. Schedule: Daily 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.

Petatlán – Picturesque town with a beautiful plaza and the Padre Jesus
de Petatlan Church, a world-famous religious center. In font of the
church is an important jewelry market, where the craftsmen sell
attractive gold pieces. In Petatlán you can enjoy authentic Regional
Cuisine, delicious local sea food dishes.
La Barrita Beach - Beautiful beach located 15 minutes from Petatlán.
You will find several restaurants where you can enjoy the taste of
regional cuisine. It is famous among surfers because the waves are
great.
Icacos Beach – This quiet beach is an ideal camping destination.
Located in Juluchuca, south to Petatlan. The pristine beach is a nesting
spot for the Garapacho and Golfina turtles protected by the "La Tortuga
Feliz" turtle camp. Here you can participate in the liberation of turtles
throughout the year. There are some restaurants and you should try the
sweets produced out of coconut.

Soledad de Maciel Archeological Site – The most important Prehispanic
treasures of the Costa Grande of Guerrero. Located four kilometers
south of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, it has the Xihuacan Site Museum, with 800
archeological pieces, most of them of Teotihuacan style. The most
importatn piece is a glyph with a circular shape that reaveals the name
of the site in the pre-Hispanic times: Xihuacan.

Valentin Lagoon - An excelent place for fishing, it features a turtle camp.
You can catch snook, snapper and mackerel.

Calvario Beach – Located 20 minutes south from Petatlán. It has a large
veranda with many seafood restaurants. The surf is strong and
swimming is not recommended, however, is excellent for just enjoying
the view while sunbathing.
Cerro de los Brujos (Witches Hill) – The name of the hill is because the
clay pieces found here, and some believe they were used by
pre-Hispanic shamans. Here is the “Piedra del Encanto” (Stone of
Enchantment), a viewpoint from which you can see the Lagoon of
Potosí. On the top of this site there is a flat rock engraved with what
seems to be a map of the town. There is a cave under the Stone, with
ancient paintings, but the access to the cave is very complicated.
Tobacco Plantations - Tobacco plantations – You can by the tobacco by
kilo, or buy a great cigar full of flavor.
Barra de Potosí - Small community with some restaurants offering
excellent food. In front of this beach are the famous “Morros de Potosí”,
a cluster of rocky islands. The lagoon is home to different kinds of birds
and the sanctuary of local wildlife. Small boats and kayaks that offer
rides to admire the beauty of this place.
Papanoa Bays – A natural paradise located in the Costa Grande. It has
20 km of coastline with beautiful beaches and bays. The landscape is
dominated by coconut palms and mango plantations.

Beaches in
Zihuatanejo
Playa Principal - Is right on the bay surrounded by the “Paseo del
Pescador”, where local fishermen keep their boats. Along the beach
there are restaurants with fresh seafood. The beach borders the edge
of town, flanked by the pedestrian Paseo del Pescador ("fisherman's
walkway”) which extends about a half kilometer from the Municipal Pier
to the Archeology Museum. The charming, tree-shaded Paseo is lined
with shops, craft stands and restaurants. Next to the beach, there is the
Pier where you can take a boat to Las Gatas Beach, rides run
continuously until the18:00 hrs.
Playa la Madera - With soft waves, this beach is ideal for swimmers and
sunbathing. Small restaurants and hotels are located on the beach and
in the small hill above it.
Playa la Ropa - The most beautiful beach on Zihuatanejo Bay and the
Costa Grande. It has outdoor restaurants, hotels and water sports
facilities.
Playa las Gatas - The name "Las Gatas" is a reference to the harmless
nurse sharks that used to swim here. The shallow water is especially
tranquil because of a legendary protective “breakwater” of sunken
boulders just offshore. The small coral reef just offshore is a nice spot
for snorkeling and diving, and a little dive shop on the beach rents gear.
The waters at Las Gatas are exceptionally clear, without undertow or
big waves.
Admire the wall King Calzontzin had built when he chose the area as a
retreat for the royal family. The beach is also popular for its casual
restaurants specializing in grilled lobster and other exotic dishes of
Guerrero, including iguana and armadillo. This lovely and secluded
beach is only accessible by "panga. Small pangas or lanchas (boats)
with shade run to Las Gatas from the Zihuatanejo town pier, a
10-minute trip.
Playa Blanca – Located 10 minutes from Zihuatanejo, is a beach
overlooking the open sea. A pristine stretch of beach, with few rustic
seafood restaurants, beach houses and small hotels. It is ideal for
running and horseback riding.

Beaches in
Ixtapa
Playa Quieta - Playa con aguas tranquilas para practicar la natación,
kayak y mar adentro el windsurf y algunos otros deportes acuáticos. Se
localiza frente a Isla Grande o también conocida como Isla de Ixtapa.
Importantes hoteles se localizan en esta playa, haciendo de ella una
segunda Zona Hotelera.

Playa Larga - It is ideal for beachcombing and horseback riding. Various
restaurants here offer exquisite seafood and drinks.
Playa el Palmar - The waves are usually moderate but can become
quite strong. The beach is in the Ixtapa hotel area and offers excellent
facilities, including gear rental for all kinds of water sports, and fine
eateries. Ixtapa's main beach, Playa Palmar, is a lovely white-sand arc
on the edge of the Hotel Zone, with dramatic rock formations
silhouetted in the sea. A broad stretch of pleasantly-soft sand, a
walkable 2.37 kilometers (1.5 miles) long. It is known as the “Ixtapa
Hotel Zone” because the majority of the hotels in Ixtapa are in this zone.

called Los Morros, just offshore. It is important to mentio that beside
from being one of the most beautiful beaches is the longest beach in
Mexico and has been certified by the National Environment
Commission as one of the cleanest beaches in the country.
Playa Quieta - With calm waters is ideal for swimming and kayaking,
and - further away from shore, for windsurfing and some other water
sport. It is acoss Grande Island, also known as Ixtapa Island. Three
major beachfront hotels are located here, making this area a “second
hotel zone”.
Playa Linda - A 10-minute drive from the Ixtapa Hotel Zone. Set in the
middle of a splendid landscape, this beach offers pleasant and tranquil
surf. Located about 13km (8 miles) north of Ixtapa. There are
inexpensive water taxis ferry passengers to Isla Ixtapa. Playa Linda is
the primary out-of-town beach, with watersports equipment and horse
rentals available. Beside the road is a beautiful mangrove and the
famous Crocodile Farm, where you can see crocodiles swimming and
resting in the sun.
Isla Grande o de Ixtapa - This is a small island with 4 beautiful beaches.
On Coral Beach, in the northern part of the island, a place called “Morro
Colorado” with crystal clear waters, is one of the best places for
snorkeling. Sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing is excellent in front of
“Varadero Beach” and “Cuachalalate Beach”. “Carey” is frequented for
sunbathing. The ten-minute boat ride to Ixtapa Island leaves from Playa
Quieta. There is also the option to take a boat from the municipal pier of
Zihuatanejo, which will take about 30 minutes. Both routes offer
frequent departures starting from 10:00, with the last return at 17:00
hrs.

What to do in
Golf
The 18-hole Palma Real Golf Course was design by Robert Trent Jones Jr.
This par 72- 6,898 yards golf course is in perfect harmony with the
environment, a former coconut plantation with natural lakes, lagoons and
lush tropical vegetation along the Pacific coastline . Rolling expanses of
fairways and greens are rimmed by tall coconut palms and dotted with
water holes and three blue lakes. It is also a wild reserve with a variety of
birds and some alligators in the lakes. Golfers see and hear a variety of
exotic birds such as parrots, macaws, cardinals, and a rare and peculiar
species of eagle called pescador (“fisherman”) because it feeds exclusively
on fish from the lakes. Seen but not heard are rabbits and “giant" iguanas.
Do not attempt to retrieve balls from the water hazards because crocodiles
live in some of them! They usually repose submerged and out of sight,
however they do stroll around at dawn.
The golf course at Marina Ixtapa is an 18-hole course designed by Robert
Von Hagge. It has been rated as one of Mexico's top courses by Golf
Digest. The course is par 72, 6793-yard course with meandering canals, 12
bridges, and a dunes-style topography. Known for meandering canals and
rolling dunes-style topography, it features more than a mile of canals that
provide fun, recreation and transportation routes between Marina Ixtapa’s
private village, the clubhouse, and other facilities. Rolling terrain covers
136 acres, with expansive sand traps and water hazards guarding 14 of the
18 holes.
Kayak
One of the best options is the trip from Playa Linda to Isla Ixtapa, the
journey takes about 15 minutes.
Sport Fishing
Ixtapa- Zihuatanejo was named the second-most popular fishing
destination by the Saltwater Sportfishing Magazine. The waters around the
resort are rich in game fish, sailfish, black and blue marlin are the primary
lure for fishermen most of the year. Five to ten miles offshore, there are
also large schools of yellowfin tuna and dorado. Closer to the shore, there
is an abundance of high-flying roosterfish, hard-fighting grouper, Spanish
mackerel, wahoo, bonito and barracuda. The best fishing season goes
from December through March. Light tackle angling and fly-fishing are also
available. The offer ranges from a fleet of Mexican-designed 25-foot super
pangas to 28- to 40-foot handcrafted, well-maintained custom cruisers, and
modern luxury yachts. These coastal waters quickly reach a depth of over
1,000 fathoms, therefore exciting action can occur anytime after leaving
port. The destination has gained renown through its world-class sport
fishing tournaments, like “The International Sailfish Tournament” in May.
Primary venues are Zihuatanejo Bay and Marina Ixtapa which has over 600
slips and full facilities for pleasure cruisers and sportfishers.

What to do in
Skimboard
The beaches in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo are ideal for skimboard. But the best
options are: Playa Principal, Playa La Ropa, and Playa El Palmar at the
point known as Las Escolleras.
Diving
Recently it was discovered that the coral reefs around
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo are some of the richest in biodiversity in the Pacific
Ocean and there are some endemic species. Due to the confluence of
two major currents, the biodiversity here is extraordinarily rich. The
fauna includes everything from sea horses to humpback whales. The
resort offers about 30 different spots for a great diving experience,
ranging from deep canyons to shallow reefs, and even sunken ships.
Visibility in the late months of the spring, summer, fall and into the winter
is 21 metres/70 feet, in the summer the average is 30 meters/100 feet.
The average water temperature during the year is 79º F. Currents here
are minimal compared to the Caribbean. Therefore, you can swim
comfortably by the coral reefs. Among the best places are: Playa
Manzanillo, Caleta de Chon and Los Morros de Potosi.
Surf
One of the best places for surfing is right at the mouth of the
Zihuatanejo Bay, where waves can be perfect within walking distance to
the edge of the rocky tip of Playa Las Gatas. Other recommended
places are: Las Escolleras, Playa Linda, Pantla, Juluchuca, Troncones,
Playa Madera, Loma Bonita, La Saladita and Barrio Nuevo.
Windsurfing
There are a few nice sandy beaches for windsurfing, especially along
the Zihuatanejo Bay. At Playa La Ropa you can find the equipment and
instructors. In Ixtapa, the best option is in the Hotel Zone 2, in Playa
Quieta.

What to do in
Acuatic Sports
La Ropa beach is ideal for water-skiing and wind surfing, while Las
Gatas and Isla Ixtapa are popular for snorkeling. The best places for
other activities like parachute gliding, sailing, wave runners and banana
rides are La Ropa Beach, Las Gatas Beach, Quieta Beach and Del
Palmar Beach.
Biking
There is a bicycle path for cycling, jogging and roller-skating. It is also a
nice place for birdwatching and nature appreciation.
The first route has 8-kilometer/5-mile. It starts at Marina Ixtapa and
heads west (counterclockwise) to circle the perimeter of the Marina
Ixtapa Golf Course, for a distance of 4.3 kilometers/2.7 miles. Then
continues up to the coast, passing alongside the Parque Aztlan, an
ecological reserve with crocodiles, iguanas, and exotic birds, until it
reaches Playa Linda.
In the opposite direction, the other route covers 3.8 kilometers/2.4
miles. It runs between Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. It begins at Paseo de los
Viveros (located behind the Palma Real Golf Course). The route goes
through lush tropical vegetation with majestic trees, some over 115 feet
tall. It is an excelent place for bird lovers, since it is very easy to spot a
myriad of species such as: woodpecker, calandria, magpie, chacalaca,
parrot, eagle, white heron, hawk, among others. Along the way you will
have the chance to see crocodiles, lake turtles, armadillos, green
iguanas, badgers, squirrels and raccoons. The path continues
southeast, flanking the highway between Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, and
ending at the Technological Institute of Costa Grande located just
before the entrance to Zihuatanejo.
Horseback riding
You can have a nice ride in Rancho Manzanillo located near La Ropa
Beach, or you can enjoy a beautiful subset while you are rinding in
Linda Beach. There are also horseback rinding in Larga Beach with a
natural lagoon.
RV Park & Camping
The RV Park and Camping Ixtapa is a place for visitors who wish to
camp either with a trailer house or just with a tent. It has 5,000 mts.2 to
camp by the sea with drainage facilities, water and electricity.

ATV’ s
One of the favourite ATV`s drives will be along the scenic and pristine
beach of the Pacific Ocean. Other options are to visit the small town of
Troncones, or enjoy a magnificent sunset, driving along tropical
plantations.
Bird Watching
In the area of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo there are more than 320 different
species. Among the more common are: Golden Vireo, Great-Tailed
Grackle, Grayson’s, Black Vulture, Orioles,Cormorant, Northern
Cardinal, and Great Blue Heron.
Skydiving
Experience the thrill of falling 120 mph with the confidence of being
attached to a licensed professional skydiver. Only from December to
March.
Turtles
Liberating marine turtles is one of the most interesting activities in the
resort, it takes place between June and December. The turtles that
arrive to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo’s beaches to reproduce are mainly Olive
Ridley Sea Turtles, “Laud” and “Carey” turtles also come to lay their
eggs here, although in smaller numbers.
