Andrew Hill Offers New
Summer Program
The Andrew Hill Health Professions
program added an exciting new
opportunity for students – a summer
nursing camp. This 5–day intensive
camp allows students to job shadow
nurses at the Santa Clara Valley
Medical Center. Students spend time in
a variety of clinical environments
(emergency room, pediatrics, operating
room, neonatal) to learn about each
areas. They also have an opportunity to
experience either the Diagnostic
Imaging, Clinical Lab, Pharmacy or
Respiratory Therapy area. Students will
receive 2 1/2 credits for completing the
camp. Three separate camps are being
offered – two in June and one in July.

Kudos to Marilyn Bliss
Bliss, Health
Professions Coordinator, for organizing
this great opportunity for our
students.

East Side Graduates and
Dedicated Parent Honored
Mt. Pleasant AVID Program
Graduates Largest Class
At the first Annual African American
Baccalaureate three East Side
graduates were honored and received
scholarships: Lauren Brown (Andrew
Hill), Keith Harper (Piedmont Hills) and
Trisha Leconte (Mt. Pleasant).
The Mt. Pleasant AVID (Advancement
Via Individual Determination) program,
designated as a National
Demonstration Model for the past five
years, graduated 65 students this
year—all college bound. Mt. Pleasant
has the largest AVID program in the
county.
The event was sponsored by the Eta
Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Society and held at Emmanuel Baptist
Church earlier this month. Also honored
was a very active parent at Piedmont
Hills, Sharon Deshazier
Deshazier, for her
contributions to the community.
Sharon has been instrumental in
developing a strong support program
for the African American students at
Piedmont Hills.
Congratulations to our outstanding
scholarship winners and to our
dedicated parent, Sharon.
Oak Grove Teacher Recognized
by Synopsys
Carol Evans
Evans, Oak Grove Science
teacher, has been selected for the
Synopsys “Newton Award.” This honor
is presented to one high school teacher
in the county for outstanding work in
the county science fair, the Synopsys
Science & Technology Championship.
Her students’ projects included: a
wheelchair that climbs up curbs, a
robotic arm, a submarine using a
memory alloy and investigations into
the use of fruit juice for solar cells.
Congratulations to Carol on this honor.
She received a trophy and a cash
award.
The program has grown from 30 to
250 students in five years. AVID’s
mission is to ensure that all students,
especially less served in the middle,
have access to a rigorous academic
program and support to gain
acceptance into four-year colleges/
universities. Ninety percent of the
graduates will attend a 4-year
university and 10% will attend
community colleges with the intent to
transfer to a 4-year college. The
graduates were honored at a special
luncheon in late May.
Congratulations to the Mt. Pleasant
AVID class of 2003. Kudos to the AVID
team: Grettel Castro-Stanley
Castro-Stanley,
Coordinator/Counselor, and teachers
Tom Fulton
Fulton, Mark Holston
Holston, Cheryl
French
French, Raquel Ornelas
Ornelas, and Bernadette
Dunham for providing these students
with the support and motivation they
needed to pursue college.
Kudos was initiated to promote the many
achievements of the East Side family
members, schools, staff, students, parents
and alumni. If you are aware of special
recognitions given to members of our

Oak Grove Football Coach Selected as CIF Model Coach
Ed Buller
Buller, Oak Grove Head Football
Coach, was selected as the 2002-03
CIF (Competition, Integrity, Fairness)
Model Coach Award winner. This award
recognizes coaches who have served as
positive role models in their schools
and communities. The model coach is
one who demonstrates and touches six
core ethical values: trustworthiness,
respect, responsibility, fairness, caring
and good citizenship.
The following summary of Ed’s
accomplishments was printed in the
May 2003 The CIF News.
“As stellar as his record is on the
football field, Eddie’s ability to
command the respect of his players
and fellow coaches, along with his
desire to help develop young men who
are good citizens, far outweighs all his
Santa Teresa Student Earns

who is enrolled in the Santa Teresa
Oracle Internet Academy, passed the
Structured Query Language (SQL)
Certification for Oracle. This
certification is worth $2,500 and four
semesters of work on the outside.
accomplishments,” said Richard Frias,
Director, Oak Grove High School.
“Coach Eddie Buller is a credit to the
fraternity of coaches and to the field
of education in general.”
Congratulations to Ed on this
outstanding honor.
Santa Teresa Students Place in National Competition
This year, Mrs. Terrell
Terrell, Santa Teresa
business teacher, decided to add the
Junior Achievement Titan Program into
her Virtual Enterprise curriculum and
achieved dramatic results. JA Titan is
an online, interactive business
simulation that teaches students the
nuances of running a business in an
increasingly competitive marketplace.
Students are required to make
decisions regarding price, production,
marketing, research and development,
and capital investment with the
objective of improving their company’s
sales and profitability. Each round of
competition simulates one business
quarter. The computer assesses each
team’s decisions and assigns a relative
score (performance index) based upon
how successful those decisions would
have fared in a competitive
marketplace.
After competing with other students
within Mrs. Terrell’s classroom,
students were given the option of
competing against teams from other
schools. Junior Achievement runs a
competition that even allows schools to
compete from all across the nation if
they can make it through elimination
rounds. Two students from Santa
Teresa High School, Sean Bae and
Otilia Ioan
Ioan, rose to the challenge and
placed 3rd in the National Finals. In
fact, they led through most of the
competition before being overtaken by
more experienced teams on the last
turn. John Dow
Dow, President of ROI Team,
Inc., was their advisor and Junior
Achievement volunteer.
Bob Borges
Borges, a Junior Achievement
representative, said he “could not recall
a new team making it to the final eight
teams, let alone coming within one
round of winning the competition.”
The first place team, from Delaware,
earned an all-expense paid trip to
Disney World, new computer equipment,
and other prizes. The second place
team, from Gig Harbor, Washington,
was also the defending national
champion from the fall semester. Both
of these schools had earned national
titles in prior years.
Sean, Otilia and Mrs. Terrell were
honored this week at the Board
meeting of the Junior Achievement of
Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay for
their achievements. Congratulations to
Sean and Otilia on an outstanding
performance, Kudos to Mrs. Terrell for
providing her students with this
opportunity.
The Oracle Internet Academy is a twoyear curriculum offering industry based
certification courses in Database
Modeling, Structured Query Language
(SQL) and Java Programming. The
academy is designed to educate
students on the fundamentals of
Internet and database technologies
and provide them with the technical
skills to pursue academic and
professional opportunities.
According to industry analysts and
experts, Oracle Certifications are
recognized credentials that signify to
the information technology employers
that an individual has a proven level of
knowledge and skill. Achieving
certification is very difficult.
Congratulations to Jae on this
outstanding achievement in his
sophomore year! Kudos to Dr.
Rosemary Greene
Greene, Coordinator of the
Oracle Academy and Oracle instructor,
for preparing her students for high
paying, high demand jobs.
Mt. Pleasant Student Wins
BVAL Scholarship
Ming Tran
Tran, senior at Mt. Pleasant who
was ranked number one pole vaulter in
CSS all year, won the BVAL athletic
scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is
presented to students who perform on
and off the field. “Ming has been that
kind of student. He does well on the
track field and in the classroom. He is
well respected by everyone,” said Coach
Steve Nelson. “The league made a great
choice.” Ming plans to go to the
University of California, Davis in the fall.
Congratulations to Ming and we wish
him much success in the future.
Foothill Teacher is Guest Presenter at Pennsylvania
Teacher Conference
Jeneva Westendorf
Westendorf, Foothill Robotics instructor, was a guest speaker for the
Chester County Intermediate Unit Teacher Center. The conference topic was
“Robotics and Virtual Reality: New Interactive Teaching Resources.”
Speaking to the attendees via video conferencing, Jeneva discussed how Robotics
can be integrated into science and math classrooms. Jeneva’s students placed first
in the national robotics competition in 2000 and several of her students are now
working at NASA. She has coached many teachers in the district in this area. Kudos
to Jeneva for sharing her successful strategies with others.
East Side Students Take Top Honors at Festival Floricanto Ketzalcoatl
Many East Side students took home awards in the 5th Annual
Ketzalcoatl, a youth arts competition.
Festival Floricanto Ketzalcoatl
Students competed in dance, theater, video and visual arts
(including digital and video).
The competition was sponsored by Teatro Familia Aztlan
Aztlan, a
multicultural youth outreach theater. Each year this group
celebrates the beauty of poetry, music and the arts with a
week-long production of El Festival Floricanto Ketzalcoatl. This
production commemorates the historical, cultural and artistic
legacy that was left by Mexico’s Toltec priest/King Ketzalcoatl
who had a major influence in the arts, customs, spirituality
and intellectual development of people throughout Mexico,
Central America and beyond.
This year to involve students in the celebration, Teatro Familia
Aztlan initiated their first youth arts competition. Students
from ESUHSD, CCOC and National Hispanic University were
invited to participate and over 200 entries were submitted.
Special thanks to Arlene Sagun
Sagun, Sherezada Caballero and
Edgar Sanchez from the San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild
for involving our students.

District Celebrates Over 1,808 Years of Experience
Seventy retirees were honored for their commitment and dedication to the
students of the district at a special ceremony last week. After a short video that
took everyone back in time, the retirees were individually honored by the
superintendent. Each honoree received a watch and certificate of appreciation.
The watch has the district logo and the initials of all the schools serve as the
numbers. They are placed in the order that they were built.
Congratulations and best wishes for a healthy and happy retirement to the 2003
retirees.

City Councilman David Cortese
represented the City Council and
presented the superintendent with the
resolution at the June 17th council
meeting. Among the major
accomplishments highlighted in the
resolution were Mr. Coto’s efforts to
get the Voluntary Integration Program
(VIP) funded for the East San Jose
community. Thanks to Superintendent
Coto’s leadership each year the East
Side Union and its feeder school
districts receive $15 million in state VIP
funds to improve student achievement.
The resolution also cited the successful
passage of three major bond measures
resulting in over one half billion dollars
in funds for modernization of facilities.
Councilman Cortese and Mayor
Gonzales recognized Coto’s role in the
development of the vision and
conception of the information age high
school, Evergreen Valley. They also
praised Coto for eliminating tracking,
increasing graduation rates and
improving the number of students
meeting college requirements.
Joe Coto will be leaving the ESUHSD at
the end of June after serving as
superintendent for 14 1/2 years.
Congratulations to Superintendent
Coto on this recognition and special
thanks from the East San Jose
community for all he has done for our
students and their families.
