Pierre Lorillard founded the Lorillard Company in
Bronx, New York.
1890
During the 1890’s the American Tobacco
Company absorbed the Lorillard Company.
Lorillard maintained its own corporate identity.
1911
The U.S. Court of Appeals issued
a Dissolution Decree to the
American Tobacco Company,
which busted the trust and created
a new Lorillard Tobacco
Company.
Lorillard’s brands included
Turkish blends such as Murad,
Helmar and Egyptian Deities.
1926
1931
Lorillard
introduced Old
Gold cigarettes;
by 1931 Olds
Gold used a
cellophane
package
wrapper for
freshness.
1938
Old Gold cigarettes sponsored radio shows
featuring Robert Benchley and Artie Shaw’s
Orchestra.
1951
Lorillard introduced self-service racks to foster
supermarket sales.
1951
Lorillard launched the Kent cigarette with the
Micronite filter.
The secret of Micronite was the use of asbestos in
the filter.
1957
Lorillard released Newport lightly mentholated
filter with “a hint of mint.”
1960’S
By the mid 1960’s Lorillard purchased
companies such as Reed’s Candy and Upsen
Products, the producers of cat food.
1966
True an extremely low tar and nicotine
brand entered the market with a recess filter.

Loew’s Theatres Inc. purchased Lorillard
Tobacco Company.
1970-1980
The Newport’s Alive with Pleasure campaign
made Newport the bestselling menthol brand by
the end of the 1980s.
2002
Loew’s created the Carolina Group as a holding
company for its tobacco assets.
2008
Lorillard Tobacco entered into a separation
agreement with its parent company Loew’s, and
became an independent publicly traded
company.
2008-2010
Lorillard in partnership with Swedish Match
created Triumph snus, a smokeless spitless
tobacco; Triumph was discontinued in 2010.
2012
Lorillard Tobacco Company purchased Blu
Electronic Cigarette.
