The san Diego
LGBT Community CENTER
2015 Annual Report
The Mission of The San Diego
LGBT Community Center is to enhance and sustain
the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender and HIV communities by
providing activities, programs and services that:
• Create community,
• Empower community members,
• Provide essential resources,
• Advocate for civil and human rights, and
• Embrace, promote and support our cultural diversity.
The San Diego LGBT Community
Center is the nation’s second oldest and one of
the largest LGBT community centers. Functioning as
the LGBT community's flagship organization, The
Center is led by a 16-member board of directors,
employs over 50 paid staff and utilizes more than 1,100
community volunteers to achieve its twin goals of
promoting LGBT health and human rights. The Center
provides direct program services to the many different
facets of the LGBT community, including youth, seniors,
families, LGBT Latin@ community members and their
families, and those living with HIV.
Chairs/Ceo
Letter
2015 was an amazing year. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples
have the fundamental right to marry and the Pentagon lifted the military ban on transgender service
members – and of course we celebrated both victories!
Yet, throughout history, no single court decision has ever signaled the end of a struggle for equality
or equity. And indeed, the ink was barely dry and the balloons still filled when the backlash and
attacks began anew.
The struggle continues for nationwide equality. We still have to pass the Equality Act through
Congress and put an end to the “married on Friday, fired on Monday” circus. Our youth continue to
be thrown out of their homes and communities and to face school bullying and harassment. Our
Trans community continues to fight for acceptance and dignity – and far too often for their lives.
After 35 years HIV continues to ravage our community, despite tools that can finally put an end to
new cases in the US, if only we ALL had access to them. Across the country too many states and
regions are passing so-called “freedom of religion” laws that override all local nondiscrimination
ordinances. Governors are proposing constitutional amendments that specifically target LGBT
civil rights. Our immigrant community members are afraid and face real threats. Voting rights,
reproductive justice struggles and the lack of criminal justice reforms continue to concern our
community members. And the list of challenges goes on…
Our San Diego LGBTQ community is wonderfully diverse, and that is one of its great challenges
and greatest strengths. It is our ability to see our common struggles and to unite in collaboration
with all those who share our desire for justice, equity and equality that has brought us this far.
That ability and willingness to reach out ever further, to partner and to include has kept us building
strength in the face of all the challenges. That strength will keep us moving forward.

demographics
It is an explicit goal of all Center programs to be inclusive and representative of the diversity found in the
San Diego community. Honoring, promoting and celebrating our community’s amazing diversity are central organizing
principles for The Center, as well as part of our mission statement. We are proud that both our staff and client
demographics nearly exactly reflect the demographics of San Diego County and, in some instances, are even more diverse.

It started with . . .
In 1971 our world was a very different place.
Being “out” simply wasn’t an option for many. Just being
a member of the LGBT community could be dangerous.
You could be fired, denied housing and worse, and there
was no one to turn to for help.
Then Jess Jessop set up an answering machine in a
utility closet, a help line available to anyone in the LGBT
community. Looking back, a simple answering machine
seems like a small thing, but at that time, it could be
world-changing. Over four decades, that simple answering
machine became The San Diego LGBT Community Center.
Incorporated as a 501c3 in 1973, just as the American
psychological and psychiatric communities removed
homosexuality from the diagnostic manuals as a disorder,
The Center provided community members with professional,
culturally-affirmative mental health services and continues
to provide those services today.
We are proud of the history of The Center’s service. From
an answering machine in a borrowed closet that served
as a lifeline for those frightened, lonely and looking for
compassionate connection to today, the nation’s second
oldest and one of the largest LGBT Community Centers. The
incredible dedication of 1000 volunteers, 15 board members
and 50 staff who spend every day attempting to serve the full
diversity of our community – youth, seniors, families, men,
women, Latino/as, African Americans, Asian-Americans,
those struggling with HIV/AIDS – makes it possible for us
to provide more than 61,000 service hours each year.

Masquerade
Tantrums & Tiaras
The Center’s newest event, Masquerade is a magical
evening of mysterious characters, celebration and
intrigue. Costumes and masks are enthusiastically
encouraged but not required and a limited number
of masks will be available to purchase at the event
to help you transform “who’s who” into “who’s
that?” You won’t want to miss this event – there’s
no program, just amazing performances, live music,
food, cocktails, mystery and more…
Tantrums & Tiaras: Battle of the Bar Queens
is an event like no other. What can you
expect to see? A high-quality spoof of
beauty pageants, of course, complete with
a “talent” showcase. Local companies
sponsor contestants, none of whom have any
experience, as they compete to be crowned
the next drag star. It’s an evening of wigs,
glitter and hilarity, all for a great cause!
Join the fun and cheer for your favorites.
thank you
