President’s
Update
from Leigh Johnson
I should have known that it wasn't going to be an easy
process to repair the sick differential in Regina the
RMB when I read the first instruction in the Workshop
Manual "first remove the seats". The second step is to
remove the covering over the intermediate shaft and
the way that Regina was put together there are no
captive nuts so it's a matter of vice grips underneath
the car, turn from inside and wait for something to drop.
A pain when you have no apprentice and an easy way
to lose a wayward nut or washer.
So the old diff and torque tube came out but the
problem hasn't yet been diagnosed. It’s not in the diff
itself. The shaft couldn't be removed from the torque
tube so all indications are there’s something funny at
the differential end of the shaft which sounds a lot like
splines. Or maybe not enough spline!
The replacement diff from spares was looking good
and I put it together with the rear axle housing I had
taken out. Bad mistake. Everything was nearly in place,
springs attached and one half shaft in but the second
one wouldn't go. The housing was twisted. Clearly all
part of the original problem. So out with the half shaft,
disconnect the springs again, test fit the replacement
housing, take that out, clean it and put it back in.
And if only that was the end of it. Having put it all back
together for the second time including replacing the
seats and that cover over the intermediate shaft I was
ready for a test drive. But there on the floor was a
donut- shaped piece of rubber. Clearly it was out of the
trunnion mounting just under that cover.
So, out with the seats again, off with the cover etc etc
and then it was finally ready for another test drive.
Sadly, while the differential was making all of the right
noises there was an extra little thud, thud thudding
coming from somewhere in the system. Something
isn't right and it isn’t obvious. The bottom line is that
Regina isn't going to Merimbula for the National Rally
and, as I write, I'm waiting to hear whether Jessicar the
Roadster is in a good state of health to take us.
But that's enough about me, what about you?
I'm hoping we have (or by the time you read this have
had) a reasonable rollup for the joint run with the folk
from Strathalbyn. At the meeting on the Thursday
before Easter there weren't very many names on the
list but then there weren't too many people at the
meeting either for very good reason.
But although there weren't all that many people at the
meeting a request from Club Captain Mark Hayes for
members to be more involved and organise runs
resulted in Carmen and Lee Friedrichs together with
Maureen and Trevor Shepherd volunteering to
organise the Christmas in June lunch. They're thinking
of a date in late June which fits in with their travel
arrangements.
April 2016
THE
Meanwhile, Helen and Paul Kerrison put their hands up
to organise a run which will involve the Aldinga
Aerodrome. Thank you all.
I sought input from members at the March meeting on
a proposal that The Crank publication schedule might
be changed so that it is produced bi-monthly.
Times have changed and we have a website, email
and Facebook all of which allow us to communicate far
differently from the past. The intervening months would
be covered by some sort of brief event update not all
that different from what you have already seen in
emails from me, Barry or Mark. The Committee
recognises that not everyone is on email but, for those
few, special arrangements could be made.
The committee will make a decision on this matter
shortly. Perhaps it’s timely because one of our joint
editors, Mark Denton has decided to not continue in the
role. I thank Mark very much for his extraordinary
contribution to the club as joint Editor of The Crank
over the last four years. I know from experience that it
isn't an easy job.
I’m certain our continuing Editor Liz Pike would
appreciate any assistance she can get from you, the
members. A small contribution from just a couple of
members each month would ease the burden on the
Editor significantly. The Editor's job should really be to
edit contributions from others but it hasn't been that
way for a long time. With your assistance, it could
certainly move closer to that objective.
How about making a decision now that you will provide
something of interest and Riley/motoring related to the
Editor for the next or another edition which could well
be June?
And so, while I sit here and ponder Roadster - friendly
weather conditions on the trip to Merimbula and
whether there might be early snow in the Alps, have a
good Riley read.

EDITORIAL
FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK
Some of you will remember a Kiwi Riley enthusiast,
Ivan Taylor, who came to the Lenswood Harvest Festival in March 2013. Ivan is the author of a monthly magazine, ’Historic Wheels’. He has sent his regards to our
members. This month’s letter to the Editor is from
Ivan’s latest edition of ‘Historic Wheels’, as is the
article on page 5. Ivan’s attitude to the set-backs he
has had since we met him has been inspirational and
I’m sure all members will wish him well in his latest of
life’s challenges.
And now to co-editor Mark Denton. Hard to believe it’s
been over four years since our February 2012 Crank
was published. With eleven editions a year, that
makes this the 46th edition under our watch. Leigh has
kindly held the title of stand-in Editor for a couple of
them. It was all Mark’s idea that we team up as joint
Editors. We both lead exceptionally busy lives so not
sure what was in our heads when we put our hands
up, but here we are, or at least here we were until last
month when that all changed to ‘here I am, co-editorless’. We’ve had three different Presidents (four if you
count Barry as he held the fort while trying to cajole
Leigh into taking the helm of the good ship Riley).
Thanks Mark - it’s been fun and a big learning curve
for both of us! As Leigh has pointed out in his
President’s report, times are changing with online
social media opportunities for connecting with
members in other ways than the Crank. The cost of
printing and postage eats rapidly into the club funds.
With postage now at $1 per Crank and around 72
Cranks being posted out each month, there’s $72/
month or $792 /year just on the postage - that
represents quite a few memberships, not to mention
the printing cost.
I’m in favour of the bi-monthly Crank idea. It will certainly take some pressure off, but what would also take
pressure off is not to have to scratch around for articles
that I think (and hope) you all might be interested in. I
am not a Riley expert that’s for sure and definitely not
a technical wizard! With the printing deadline looming,
sadly there have been no contributions from members
of a technical nature or any reports on recent club
activities apart from photos of the technical night from
Leigh. Hence, I have resorted to some technical
photos from my own back yard and a bit of grammar
that I found entertaining and hope you do too!

It is with pleasure that we welcome Ian and Nancy
Davies along with John Walkley as members of the Riley Motor Club of SA. John was a member before and is
currently making a Riley Special from an RMB chassis.
Ian and Nancy are the proud owners of an RMC.
For those members who were not able to attend the
AGM but would like to receive a copy of the AGM
minutes with all the reports, would you please contact
me on 83704571 or email [email protected]
and I will either post or email to you. Our membership
now stands at 102, giving us a healthy start for the
year.
We would like to have an increase in our committee
membership, with the current load being shared by too
few members. Even a position as a general committee
person would be a great help.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Hi everyone.
The old saying of you never know what’s around the
corner was brought home to me very recently. I was
rushed into hospital with terrible stomach pains four
weeks ago. Morphine sorted out the pain and I was
given an M.R.I. scan which unfortunately showed that
I have melanomas of the pancreas and liver. There is
no known cure for this type of cancer that I have,
which apparently came from a cancerous eye that I
had removed 3 years ago, only pain relief when
needed.
Currently I have very little pain, but it has slowed
down the body in general, but not my desire to
continue my writing and researching.
Historic Wheels will continue for as long as I am able,
along with my commissioned work and freelance
writing. It’s something that I enjoy and sitting at my
computer is very relaxing and rewarding. I hope that
you enjoy this and many more issues of Historic
Wheels in the future.

Lexophile not same as a punster
Lexophilia - "Lexophile" is a word used to describe
those that have a love for words, such as "you can tune
a piano, but you can't tuna fish," or "to write with a
broken pencil is pointless.
A competition to see who can come up with the best
lexophiles is held every year. Here are some of them:
When fish are in schools, they sometimes take debate.

AMERICAN
ELECTRIC COMPANY
The Elgin Sewing Machine and Bicycle Company
moved into car manufacturing in 1896, and first
exhibited them for sale at the 1899 New York
Electrical Show and the Paris Exposition.
The company was based in Chicago. The vehicle
was really a motorised dog cart but it was the way
that Elgin had devised the very simple drive system
that was easily adapted to fit different types of
normal horse carriages by replacing the rear axle.
This was the secret of their initial success.
The electric motor had a hollow armature shaft
through which passed the drive shaft, on either end
of which was a steel pinion; this was attached to the
hub of the rear wheel of the vehicle. In this drive
was a differential gear which automatically adjusted
the differing speeds of the rear wheels when
cornering. The wheels ran on ball bearing axles,
with 26 inch wheels on the front and 34 inches on
the rear, both with 3 inch rubber tyres fitted.
The batteries consisted of forty two 80 ampere
accumulators designed by the company with a
1,600 watt capacity, rated at half saturation they
were designed to give a five hour rating. A system
of automatic recharging was also incorporated. The
series/parallel control gave it five speeds and was
capable of 15 m.p.h. On a small dashboard a
combination volt and amp meter gave an indication
of the power being used and what remained, and
distance covered.
In 1902 Elgin ceased vehicle production to
concentrate on their sewing machine business.
I don’t know how many were produced or if any
have survived.
From ‘Historic Wheels’ by Ivan Taylor, NZ.
SO
With the total driving mechanism situated within the
rear axle and wheels, the system could be readily
adaptable to convert all sorts of different horse
drawn vehicles once steering had been fitted. Several models still retained the coachman high up on
his rear seat, steering and controlling the vehicle
from there as he originally had done.

He has kept his fatherly pride under wraps but it’s time
to show off Peter Lawry’s daughter, Jo, pictured
above with Sting. Some of you have known Jo for years
through your association with the Riley Club of SA.
Jo is making quite a name for herself around the world
as a jazz guitarist and vocalist.
Jo has worked as Sting’s backing vocalist on tour and
recordings since 2009 and performed with him and Paul
Simon on their tour of Australia last year.
Sting repaid the favour by offering to do backing vocals
for Jo when she released her first CD of original songs.
He ended up singing a duet with her in her song
‘Impossible’.
Jo is being hailed as ‘the finest jazz vocalist Australia
has produced’ after her recent appearance at
Sydney’s Camelot Lounge in February this year.
"She has a gift for the music of words, a feel for the
stories they tell and an instinct for how to drape a lyric
elegantly across a vivid melody... effervescent and
riveting." The Sydney Morning Herald.
"Jo Lawry numbers among our favorite discoveries of
the past year." Time Out New York.
Jo played to sell out crowds at the Speigeltent in the
Garden of Unearthly Delights at the last Fringe in March.
“This woman ticks all the boxes – she has an expressive
voice, with a great range, she writes clever and insightful
songs and has a warm stage presence”..
And her proud dad drives a Riley!

The Riley Motor Club of South Australia
Inc.
Minutes of General Meeting held at 8.00 pm
24th March 2016 at the
Shannons Insurance Club Rooms, 863 South Road,
Clarence Gardens SA
The President Leigh Johnson opened the meeting at
8.00 pm.
Members Present: There were 22 members present as
per the attendance book, plus one Riley.
Visitors: There were no visitors.
Apologies: were recorded from Ian & Helen Klose, Mike
Quinn and Rosalie Haese, John Henderson and Liz
Pike.
Minutes: The minutes of the February 2016 meeting
were not approved since the members had not yet
received their copies of the Crank. President Leigh
deferred the acceptance of the minutes until the next
meeting
Business arising: This item was also deferred until the
next meeting.
Induction of New Members:
The President advised the members that we had an
application for membership from Ian and Nancy Davies.
Ian and Nancy had purchased a Riley Roadster from
Victoria. An application has also been received from
John Walkley who is in the process of building a Riley
Special from an RMB chassis.
Barry Softley proposed and Peter Leppard seconded
that all three applicants be accepted into the Club. The
vote was unanimous.
President’s Report. The President advised members
that there had been a glitch in the production of the
Crank and that later in the meeting those members who
were present would be given their copy of the Crank.
He also advised that Barry had now set up a spare parts
database and ordering system and commended Barry
for his considerable efforts and achievement of an excellent outcome.
The President presented the Clubmanship Award to
Christine Hayes. This had been announced at the
February meeting but not presented at that time because
the award had not been engraved.
Secretary’s Report: The Secretary reported that we
had 103 members and that only one member had yet to
pay his fees. He had however indicated to the President
that he would be doing so. Only two members had failed
to renew, in both cases their cars had been sold.
Correspondence In: Various magazines and flyers
regarding other clubs’ events.
Correspondence Out: Invoices had been sent to all the
Advertisers in the Crank.
Treasurers Report: The Treasurer reported for February 2016 the income had been $130.00 from membership fees Expenditure had been $nil and that with
outstanding cheques of $874.30 we had $2759.40 in the
trading account and also $ 3304.27 in the Deposit Account. Acceptance of the report was proposed by Peter
Leppard and seconded by Trevor Shepherd. All
members were in favour. Members who had not
April 2016
THE
received their membership card were asked to contact
Peter Leppard.
Captain’s Report: The Club Captain, Mark, thanked
Lee and Guli Paltridge for putting on such a great night
on the 16th March for the Technical and Social Night.
There were thirteen members present. Mark Hayes
advised that he and Christine would be hosting one on
the 12th of May at Lewiston. Mark explained the details
for the joint run with the Strathalbyn club to be held on
the 17th April, full details to be found in the February
‘Crank’. He also outlined the arrangements for the
National Rally 2nd to the 6th of May. Some members
were leaving on the 29th of April and any member
wishing to join them for the trip, are most welcome, and
to please contact Leigh for the details. Mark was also
seeking someone to organise the Xmas in July run and
Lunch. There was also a general call for volunteers to
run other events throughout the year.
New Spares Report: President Leigh advised members
that the new spares were running well and that
Secretary Barry had produced another database to run
the spares in addition to a spares operating manual.
Second Hand Spares: Chris advised that a team had
recently gone to the location of the old spares to do an
appraisal. President Leigh advised that the second hand
spares would be relocated to the home of Mark and
Christine Hayes as soon as Mark has prepared an area
for them. Questions were raised about windscreen
repairs. Rob McAllister advised that he had had two
front screens made by Complete Windscreens, Main
North Road, Prospect. He did advise that there had been
a dispute about the bill being different from that quoted.
It was also suggested that Phil Evans had some
contacts. It was also noted that Leigh had recently acquired a new differential from second hand spares.
Federation Report: Chris advised that there was no
report this month, but would be next month.
Technical Questions: Leigh told those present about
his problems with his differential and the trouble that he
was having lining up the half shafts.
Any Other Business: Following a query raised when a
prospective buyer wanted to drive Jock’s RMC Roadster.
It has been established that when a member has died,
the registration of a historical vehicle is no longer valid.
However for a normally registered vehicle the vehicle is
still registered after death. Naturally there was plenty of
discussion from those present, with many dissenting
views.
President Leigh raised the question as to whether we
should change the Crank to a bi-monthly publication. He
also threw into the hat the suggestion that we join other
states in a National Riley Magazine. Naturally there was
much discussion on the subject, with the Secretary suggesting that if we did go down the route of a bi-monthly
magazine then we should also produce a monthly
emailed newsletter giving members all the information
concerning events and activities being organised by the
organised by the club. There was a general feeling that
the idea of a bi-monthly magazine was okay provided we
had the safeguard of a newsletter by email with those
few without email catered for in another way. Chris
Kinney did say he would prefer a monthly magazine.

Minutes of March meeting continued…..
The matter was referred to the committee for further
