The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick takes place on the first
Saturday of the month immediately following the 8:30 morning

Holy Communion for the homebound.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
The Sacrament is celebrated every Sunday at 2:30 PM. Except
that there will be no baptisms on the fifth Sunday of the month.
Registration is necessary prior to the date of Baptism. Instruction
is required for parents of first children.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance.
Weddings may be celebrated Fridays: 5:00 PM, Saturdays: 11:00

Fourth Sunday of Advent

It is a message that we can never exhaust, never become tired of: the mystery of the
Infinite made present to us in a gentle Infant in a
manger, the Eternal entering our troubled human
history, the Omnipotent and Almighty presented
in the vulnerable and innocent Babe in swaddling
clothes – God so easy to approach and love in
this Child of Bethlehem. For me, the Christmas
greeting that says it all, and so simply, is found
in the First Reading today, from Isaiah: And He
will be called Emmanuel – “God-With-Us.”
Perhaps we should search to find other
ways to continue our Christmas greetings when
we put away the cards and lights and decorations of this holy season, ways beyond the usual beautiful but limited art and poetry, ways
more touching and more powerful, in our gentleness, our tenderness, our trust, our gratitude, as we share them with one another, not
only during this joyous season, but throughout
the year. What we do with and for one another, day by day, are the Christmas greetings
that should last the year long.
In that spirit to you and to your family
and loved ones, I offer you my Christmas “card”
in the words attributed to a 16th century Franciscan friar:

Dear parishioners,
We are here, on this Fourth Sunday of Advent,
three days from Christmas. Amid all of the hustle and
bustle of these frenetic final days of preparation for
our Christmas celebration, I took a few minutes to review and re-read my Christmas cards. I do this each
year because I find that when I open the cards, I am
usually in a hurry to get through the daily mail, separating wheat from chaff, sheep from goats, bills from
personal correspondence, first class from junk; and
the Christmas cards are too easily acknowledged with
a cursory nod, checking the name, and summarily
consigned to the window sill in my office. And I think
that they deserve more attention than that. After all,
they carry the wishes and affection of friends, so many
of whom I hear from only at this time of year. And
that makes them more, not less, significant. So, I
usually try to return to the cards at some quiet moment, to appreciate them more appropriately and let a
host of memories and mental images flood into mind.
And this might be the appropriate time to thank you,
our parishioners, for all of your Christmas Wishes, for
the cards and gifts we have received in the rectory.
Your warmth and joy, in the words of the familiar
song, “make the season bright!”
Each ach year, unfailingly, I am impressed by
the variety of the cards as I review them: so many
different ways to express in words and art all that
Christmas means to us. The Virgin and Child might be
portrayed in simple line sketches, or perhaps in reproductions from medieval manuscripts or Quatrocento
frescoes or stained glass, or in the traditional (often
sentimental) images of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The accompanying inscriptions are
just as varied: Scripture: God so loved the world . .
. Unto us a child is born . . . She brought forth
her first-born Son and laid Him in a manger . . .
or others just as effective: Christus Natus Est . . .
Peace on Earth . . . Christmas Blessings.
If the figures are not of Mary and Jesus, then
perhaps they are those of the shepherds, or angels in
a starry sky with their Tidings of Great Joy . . . Glory to God in the Highest, or just as likely, the Magi,
guided by the star, with their exotic gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh, some in elaborate landscape
scenes, other times in stark silhouette. Again, the
wishes familiar: The light shines in the darkness . .
. Noël . . . Wise men still seek Him, on and on, all
with the same intent: to try to put into words the
unique and transcendent message of Christmas, the
wonder of Divine Love born in our human flesh, a
message that words cannot contain, a message understood more aptly by the heart than by the head. It is
a message that we can never exhaust, never become
tired of: the mystery of the Infinite made present to us

you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you
which you have not got. But there is much, very
much, that while I cannot give it, you can take.
No heaven can come to us unless our hearts
find rest in today. Take heaven! No peace lies in
the future which is not hidden in this present
little instance. Take peace! The gloom of the
world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our
reach, is joy. Take joy! There is radiance and
glory in darkness, could we but see. And to
see, we have only to look. I beseech you to
look! . . . Life is so full of meaning and purpose,
so full of beauty beneath its covering that you
will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage
then to claim it, that is all! . . . And so I greet
you, not quite as the world sends greetings, but
with profound esteem and with the prayer that
for you, now and forever, the day breaks and
the shadows flee away.

Stewardship Reflection Way of Life
As we are closer to Christmas, we concentrate on Mary’s place in the birth of Christ.
So many times our cards portray Mary as
someone who had no worries or cares. If we
think back, she was a young girl, living in an
occupied territory. She was asked to take on
the responsibility of giving birth to the Christ
Child. She traveled over rough terrain to visit
her cousin Elizabeth. Mary can be a model for us. All of our
“yeses” to God require a trust in the God who asks. May we
realize that Mary was a person like us who can help us when
we respond to God.

Festivities included the Concert and Pageant performed by the 7th and 8th Grade, the PreK
Concert, the 4th Grade Advent Prayer Service and the Grades 1, 2 & 3 Concert!!! All
served to put us in the holiday mood!

Christmas 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
We have seen His glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth! The Prologue of John’s Gospel
proclaims with awesome beauty the great truth of the One Who is born of the Virgin Mary. The Father’s Only
Son has become flesh and dwelt among us. God’s glory becomes manifest in a little child! His glory is made
known through a human birth. All of humankind is changed and changed forever. God reveals to us a wholly
new aspect of God’s love. For He so loved the world that He sent His only Son, born of a woman! Divine life
becomes one with human life and human life will never be the same.
Small wonder angels sing, shepherds adore and wise men come seeking truth, real truth, the truth of God’s Love
given to us in the all so very human dimension of a baby, but a baby born of a Virgin. He is born of a woman so
that He could redeem not only His Virgin Mother but all of us who are rescued by Him from a destiny of death
to a destiny of love and life eternal.
St. Bernard writes beautifully about the two comings of Jesus. The first is the birth of Mary’s Son in Bethlehem
and the second is when He comes in glory and majesty when all flesh will see the salvation of our God! But, he
adds there is a third coming of Jesus, an intermediary one, like a road leading from the first to the last coming.
On that road are all of us who seek to keep God’s word in our hearts and to live according to His commandments. If you keep the Word of God in this way, without a doubt you will be kept by it.
This Christmas I pray that all of us will let the new born child into our hearts and into our lives. I pray the Son
of God made man to make all things new, will fill your lives and give new hope and joy to your lives day after
day until He comes in glory. Let Christ take possession of you completely for He created you and He comes now
to redeem you. And He will glorify you so that you will see that He makes our lives like His and makes us one
with Him in the Father’s glory: we too, ourselves, thanks to Him, full of grace and of truth.
A joyful, blessed and peaceful Christmas to you, your families and all those you carry in your hearts!
