the business is, so is finding true
love … Chad Michael Murray,
24, who allegedly is very familiar
with indecency and infidelity is
making headlines yet again. This
time the young hot actor is rumored
to be engaged, only after five
months from his annulment from
co-star Sophia Bush! According
to People, the “One Tree Hill”
star is going to marry 18-year-old
Kenzie Dalton, who is also a member of the WB show’s crew. Bush
cited “fraud” for the reasoning of
the separation, causing cheating
rumors to stir around Murray …
Paris Hilton is currently negotiating to star as Mother Teresa in an
upcoming movie role. An Indian
film director is looking into casting Hilton for the starring role
because of her facial features that
resemble the former Nobel Prize
winner. The deal though is not sent

‘DIRTY DANCING’: THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE

I
t was 1987 when the
dancing began, and
since then it hasn’t
stopped.
“Dirty Dancing” waltzed into
theatres nearly 20 years ago and
continues to make generations
of new audiences melt over a
fiery love story mixed with toetapping tunes and dance numbers.
The film chronicled the summer of 1963 for Francis “Baby”
Houseman played by Jennifer
Grey.
Baby, 17, spends the summer vacationing with her parents and older sister and a posh
Catskills resort.
What initially begins as a
boring stay for Baby, changes
quite rapidly.
Things begin to heat up
when she meets the resort’s
dance instructor, Johnny Castle
(Patrick Swayze).
Baby is memorized by Johnny
and the resort’s dancers who
have an underground lair of
passionate dancing and tantalizing moves hidden from the rigid
formalities of the resort.
When Johnny’s dance partner

Penny is too ill recovering from
an abortion to perform with him
in a mandatory dance competition, Baby must step in and take
her place.
Although they are completely different from one another,
Johnny and Baby teach each
other new things about dancing,
life and love.
Johnny and Baby spend hours
practicing the routine and soon
fall in love.
Baby must hide her love affair
from her reserved parents, who
consider Johnny an experienced
rebel with a dangerous past.
Baby’s father holds Johnny
responsible for Penny’s pregnancy and views him as a deviant preying over his daughter.
Upon learning of their rela-
tionship, he also blames Johnny
for Baby’s loss of innocence
since he can no longer view his
daughter with the same sweet,
naïve and virginal halo.
Johnny flees from the resort
but returns on the last night,
just in time for the final performance of the summer.
This leads to the most memorable phrase and dance sequence
in the film, when Johnny
approaches the Houseman family’s table and said, “Nobody
puts Baby in a corner.”
Johnny then escorts Baby to
the stage where they dirty dance
to the song “(I’ve Had) The
Time of My Life” and she runs
across the room to him and he
lifts her horizontally over his
head.
Everyone at the resort, including Baby’s parents, witnessed
their love and harmony once
again spreads with all the guests
at the resort.
“Dirty Dancing” celebrated
its 15th anniversary in 2003 with
the release of an ultimate edition DVD and CD.
The film also spawned a
sequel entitled “Dirty Dancing
Havana Nights.”
It hit theatres in February
2004 and Patrick Swayze had a
cameo appearance in the film.
The dancing and songs “Dirty
Dancing” produced are still
recognized and praised world
wide.
Contestants on the television
series “Dancing with the Stars”
even replicated the final number for the dancing contest. It
seems as though the song just
won’t end when it comes to
“Dirty Dancing.”

FOREIGN FILM TESTS MORALITY

I
t is hard to find a movie
that makes the audience
feel they truly understand what the characters’ are experiencing.
L’Enfant (The Child) is the
2005 Cannes Film Festival Palme
d’Or winner, and it has lived up to
the distinction.
The story is set in Seraing,
in eastern Belgium and involves
a young couple Sonia (Deborah
Francois) and Bruno (Jeremie
Renier) who are trying to survive
with no money and a new baby
son.
Bruno refuses to get a job and
supports his family through panhandling and stealing.
We see the couple happy at the
beginning, celebrating Jimmy’s
birth, with many scenes of them
chasing each other around like
little kids and laughing.
The movie quickly takes a
turn toward the darker side when
Bruno hastily decides to sell
Jimmy on the black market.
Once he realizes his mistake,
everything changes.
The film is written and directed
by brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc

Dardenne.
The movie was inspired by
Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and
Punishment” and a girl the brothers saw pushing a baby stroller,
according to a press release.
The movie is filmed documentary style with shaky camera shots, no musical soundtrack,
shots through doorways and periods of silent pauses.
There is also a long uncomfortable scene between Sonia and
Bruno, and even though there
is no dialogue the audience can
feel her anger through her body
language.
Newcomer Francois does an
amazing job showing Sonia’s
journey from excited parent to
devastated mother, yearning for
her stolen child.
Renier also does a great job
of making the audience love and
hate Bruno at the same time.
He protrays Bruno as a careless
thief through most of the movie
but at the end he lets out his emotions in a believable scene dealing
with guilt and sorrow.
One of the best and most disturbing scenes is when Bruno
sells Jimmy.
He puts Jimmy into a room
and waits in another room for the
buyer to take Jimmy and leave
the money.
The camera never leaves Bruno
until he picks up the money.
The scene is intense as we here
the footsteps and a little cry from
Jimmy, and we can see the range
of emotions on Bruno’s face from
excitement to guilt.
It was moving and sad and a
great way to show the human
character.
Also, there was a great performance from Jeremie Segard
as Steve, one of Bruno’s young
thieves.
This was a dark and hard to
watch film and the audience is
left questioning human nature and
love.
There are many lessons to be
learned from the themes of the
film, many dealing with growing
as a person and taking responsibility for your actions.
The film was released in New
York and Los Angeles on March
24, and nationwide in April.
GET RID OF WINTER PALE SKIN, GO BRONZE

All the latest runways feature
beautifully golden models in
pretty feminine frocks.
Many of us have stocked up
on spring clothing, but don’t
have the glow to finish the
look.
Somehow spring and summer outfits don’t have the same
effect on drab and pasty skin.
We all know the sun has yet
to provide any help in attaining
beautifully bronzed skin everyone wants for the spring/summer season, but we will out-
smart nature and find our own
summer glow with or without
the big sun’s cooperation.
Keep in mind that exposure to
an excess amount of sun is not
always the best remedy to get
the tanned skin you need to look
great in your new clothing.
It can lead to rough and wrinkly skin, not to mention skin
cancer.
But thanks to today’s technology we have many ways to fake
beautifully sun-kissed tans.
There are many lotions that
give an instant tan, without the
skin-burning effect.
The negative side to this is
that they can often turn out
orange or uneven.
For best results shower and
exfoliate prior to use.
A great alternative is the

Story Of The Year connected with its audience durning the Taste of Chaos Tour, which featured 13 hardcore rock bands on two stages.

The lights dimmed on thousands of anxiously awaiting fans as their screams pierce
my ears.
A guitar chord is struck and the bass reverberates through my feet, causing my drink to
ripple.
When the lights come up only seconds later
all mayhem ensues.
Crowd surfers float across the heads of
jumping enthusiasts, fists raised in the air
while select few run around in circles starting
up what would eventually become the largest
mosh pit I’ve ever seen.
Now I understand why they call this Taste
of Chaos.
A tour complete with two stages, 13 hardcore bands and no rules.
The Deftones headlined the tour, but the
highlight of the show was the energizing performance by St. Louis-based rockers, Story of
the Year (SOTY).
Ever wonder what happens when you take
five guys covered in tattoos, a plastic horse
mask, and penchant for trouble and put them
on a tour sponsored by the energy drink,
Rockstar?
You get SOTY’s jaw-dropping stage show,
complete with dual back flips from 10-foot
platforms, stage diving, and a horse-headed
drummer.

“I love playing Taste,” Ryan Phillips, SOTY
guitarist said. “It’s a real rock show.”
The highlight of the set wasn’t the tricks
they did on stage, or the dozens of fans crowd
surfing, or even a guest appearance by a small
toddler who knew all the lyrics to the songs.
The climax came when the band played
a song off their new album, In the Wake of
Determination, titled, “Is this my fate?” he
asked them.
The song is about tolerance, giving the
middle finger to discrimination with lyrics
such as, “Failure to evolve is failure to us all.
When will you learn that this is where we
fall?”
“It’s about Ryan’s brother, who is gay,”
Adam Russell, SOTY bassist said.
Phillips recalls a time when he was much
younger and a pastor’s wife told his brother,
“Son, I’m sorry, but you’re going to burn in
hell” for being gay.
Russell adds, “The song as a whole is not
a stab at religion or faith, it’s a stab at the
idea that there is something wrong with being
gay.”
In true rock star style, Phillips advices anyone who is suffering from discrimination to,
‘keep your head up and not let assholes and
insecure fucks ruin your day.”
The performance ended to loud cheers and
screams of enthusiasm and joy.
As the band left the stage they were quick
to stop and thank me for watching the show,
not sparing the sweat-transferring hugs.
The show continued long after SOTY
left the stage, with performances by Atreyu,
Thrice, and The Deftones, among others, but
the night definitely belonged to the boys from
Missouri, with their energy, sincerity, and
plastic horse mask.

LIVE AND BETTER THAN EVER

Life

the murder

Chemical
Romance
proves that
music is not a science, but
rather a clever collaboration
of musicians expressing their
feelings of love, hate and bitter-sweet revenge.
Fueled by powerful guitars and hypnotizing drums,
MCR’s latest debut album
features a collection of live
performances including three
of their chart toppers; ‘I’m
not Okay,’ ‘Helena’ and ‘The
Ghost in You.’
The CD has array of songs
fit to please any one seeking a
musical thrill, as well as two
DVDs that takes audiences on
a MCR rollercoaster that will
make them laugh, cringe and
maybe even cry.
All the songs on the CD
are live, which unfortunately
causes the vocals to get lost in
the heavy music making MCR
a little rough on the ear.
Aside from the hysteric
guitar slamming, obnoxious
drumming and uncoordinated
vocals, audiences are bound to
find themselves bobbing their
head on several occasions.
Hardcore fans will enjoy
the screaming melodies of
lead vocalist, Gerard Way in
songs like ‘Thank you for the
Venom’ and ‘Cemetery Drive,’
While the softer audiences
will appreciate ‘Desert Song’
in which Gerard sings, rather
than his signature screams and
moans.
Once
listeners
have
absorbed their music, they can
sit back and enjoy two DVDs
about the band members.
DVD one, MCR’s video
diary, serves as a detailed documentary of the band.
Audiences, especially those
not familiar with the band,
will be amazed to find out they
might actually have something
in common with these gothic
punk rockers.
DVD two features live music
performances. Audiences are
able to view over five live
performances.
Overall, MCR has outdone
themselves.
Those who do not sway
to the heart-pounding beat of
the tattooed rockers, will
discover that underneath
their gothic make-up,
these head-banging musicians are just like any
other average Joe.
MUSICAL GENIUS ON ‘BOTH
SIDES OF THE GUN’

Ben Harper is back
with a vengeance with
his first solo album
since Diamond on the
Inside’s 2004 release.
Harper
boggles
the mind with his musical talent, often
single-handedly writing his songs as
well as playing every instrument on the
track, which gives Harper his distinctive
sound.
Both Sides of the Gun consists of two
discs each containing nine tracks.
One disc features classic Ben Harper
rock, slightly jazzy and a whole lot
funky; it is Harper’s political voice, while
the other contains sweet ballads and love
songs, rich with bold beautiful string
orchestrations and Harper’s raspy soulful voice.
Writing enchanting melodies along
with eloquent and romantic lyrics has
never been a problem for Harper, but
they are often overshadowed by his politically charged tunes.
Finally this side of Harper has a chance
to shine.
Songs such as “Waiting for You” and
“Picture in A Frame” show the softer
aspects of Harper, with haunting melodies and declarations of love.
Harper’s use of string orchestrations
and particularly the upright bass, gives
the music a rich and passionate sound.
While disc one represents love and
peace, disc two represents hate and war.
Disc two contains the international
influence that is part of Harper’s style.
Harper is definitely passionate about
the subjects that he writes about, even
screaming his lyrics, “Reality is sharp it
cuts at me like a knife/Everyone I know
is in the fight of their life/ and I believe
there’s a better way.”
Harper continues his political ranting
touching on subjects such as Hurricane
Katrina and the war in Iraq.
Harpers Both Sides of the Gun is very
enjoyable.
His remarkable talent captures listeners causing an irresistible urge to
think, move and sway with the hypnotic
rhythms.

THE MUSIC SCOOP PART SIX

T
here’s been big news
in the Jimmy music
world over the last
several weeks.
It happened that both
Elvis Costello and Donald Fagan
(of Steely Dan fame) released
albums, and I have been happy.
So happy that I’m revitalized on
my mission to eviscerate your
musical taste and replace it with
good taste – my taste.
So here’s five more for your
library.
(26) Thriller by Michael
Jackson. This album starts off
great and never ceases. I’m super
white and it makes me want to
shake my thing from the first to
the last song. I kid you not – my
head starts to shimmy as soon as
“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”
opens up. By the time “Billie
Jean” starts, I’m through fighting
and I’m dancing on tabletops and
ceilings. Classic Jackson.
(27) The Smoker You Drink,
The Player You Get by Joe
Walsh. True, the title of this
makes little sense. But I’m
fairly certain that Joe Walsh is
semi-understandable himself –
I’ve seen him on Drew Carey
and that dude is weird. This
album is not though, and is
one that you can listen to front
to back all the way through,
and then listen through again.
“Rocky Mountain Way” is the
recognizable single, but my
favorite is “Wolf.” “Days Gone
By” is good, too. Employing
various rock tones, at least one
of these songs will please every
fan of rock music.
(28) Fore! by Huey Lewis
and the News. Some might say
that Lewis’ best album is Sports,
and I think there’s a good argument to be made for that; “The
Heart of Rock & Roll” is a great
tune that perfectly captures the
spirit of rock music, and “If This
Is It” is super easy to find yourself singing along to. But for my
part, Fore! shows off more of the
band’s versatility. Not a different
formula than Sports, Fore! fol-
29) The Nightfly by Donald
Fagan. This album reminds me
of Biloxi, Miss. because that’s
where I first heard
it. Do certain albums
ever transport you
back to a time and
place? Maybe I’m
weird. Nevertheless,
Fagan’s first departure
from the comfortable
and profitable bosom
of Steely Dan, The
Nightfly is an exercise
in how good tunes
with excellent production value can make
what might’ve been a
good effort into a bloody great
album. Clean and crisp, there
aren’t any blemishes in this gem.
Fagan crafted a dark and brooding look at suburban America, I
think, reminiscent of his childhood – especially apparent in
“New Frontier,” which smacks of
Cold War fears and an uncertain
future. Not that Donald and I
were buds in the ‘60s, but that’s
what I think, anyway. My favorite track is the title, where Fagan
pays tribute unto radio stations
“I’m super white and [the
album] makes me what
to shake my thing from
the first to the last song.”
JIMMY STROUP
lows roughly the same pattern:
some rockin’ tunes, some pining
and longing for women. But it
also stretches into other ground,
employing barbershop-esque harmonies in “Naturally” and stronger lyrical narratives than the simplistic messages in Sports with
tunes like “Forrest for the Trees”
and the Bruce Hornsby-written
“Jacob’s Ladder.” Anyway, I like
it – it’s hard not to.

long since gone the way of the
dodo. Masterful. His new one,
Morph the Cat, is just as good,
though, so get that, too.
(30) Jackrabbit Slim by
Steve Forbert. With a wavering
voice that always sounds like it
could use some nice warm tea to
smoothen it out, Forbert’s second
album which released in 1979,
Jackrabbit Slim, really showed
off his talent and put him on
the map – for about a year. He’s
still around, still making records,
but almost no one knows it any
more. Except me, and that’s
why I’m here. On this album,
“Romeo’s Tune” shines, as does
“I’m in Love With You” and
“Complications.” Easily his best,
Jackrabbit Slim is a great little
triumph in a rough career (though
he’s gotten back on track lately,
and has released some very good
stuff in the last five years).
So that’s that, then. More to
come next week. I promise you:
there’s always something more I
can suggest that’s better than the
crap you might still be listening
to.
CHEAP POST-SPRING
BREAK ACTIVITIES

Now that our beloved spring
break is over and we must get
through our last half of the spring
semester, it’s now time to get out
of spring break mode and back to
our daily routines.
With the possibility of going to
hot vacations spots over, at least
until the beginning of the summer, here are a few post-spring
break ideas to discreetly keep the
party going.
The first suggestion is to spend
a few dollars catching up on all
those movies you’ve wanted to
see.
Just thing about it, everyone
has a long list of movies they
want to see, why not spend the
next five to seven weeks catching
up on flicks.
If you want to be creative
you, pick a movie theme. Classic
movies with college themes are
“Animal House,” “Revenge of the
Nerds” and “Legally Blonde”.
If you are not a fan of spending
countless hours as a coach potato,
you can plan a more entrancing
event. If you have friends who
like food, it wouldn’t be terribly wrong to throw a backyard
barbeque. This event can work
to your advantage in one of two
ways; you can show off your
cooking/barbequing skills and
win brownie points, or you can
get your friends to cook homemade food for you to consume.
All you need is a great weather,
a set of your friends, food and
good fun.
For those of you out there who
like to get in touch with your
inner nerd, spend your free reading a book you actually want to
read.Spend your time reading a
book for pleasure.
I understand many of you will
not like any of the ideas I have
mentioned thus far, but there is
hope friends. I have one final
solution; you can play catch up
on the one thing we all are lacking, SLEEP. Yes, sleeping can
make moods, thoughts, and emotions much clearer. Catching up
on sleep can help you finish the
final half of the semester with a
bang.
