Kid
Today was my first day at this new school-thing I'm trying out. It
wasn't my idea, but my mum and my teacher said it could be good
for me - I thought no big deal, give it a try. You see, this thing's
called 'One Day School' and guess what? It's like a special school
on one day of the week. Instead of doing normal school stuff (or
boring stuff), you focus on one topic all day. Today was 'Gladiators'
-which made some of the other boys Woop. We started off chatting
about what 'Gladiators' were, and we came up with some neat ideas
(even the girls helped).
At the tables we got to choose where to sit, so I sat next to Zack
(one of the other new boys from soccer). We got a sheet with 3
sections, named 'Think & Discuss', 'Read, Write, Research', and 'Make,
Do, Create'. Each had tick box next to a list of activities you could
do. We got to choose one of the activities out of the 'Read, Write,
Research' box. I scanned the paper nervously, what if they were all
boring? Hmmmm... Actually they weren't bad at all. I could write a
short story about a gladiator! Cool-I love writing. I instantly ticked
the box beside that option and my pen started scrawling across the
page in my messy handwriting. My story was about a young boy
called Titus, (I got the name from one of the gladiator books). He
was an orphan boy, forced into replacing a man in a gladiator battle.
My mind bubbled with ideas.

I performed the sign of life or death. If I had liked
the way Zack had fought, I would give the thumbs
up and he'd live. If not, thumbs down, and death.
I held my thumb flat for effect, then ever so slowly
tilted it downwards. Hamish fake jabbed Zack in
the stomach and he wriggled about for a bit. The
servant girl broke out of character and squealed,
which set us all off. We cracked up, laughing our
heads off. After settling down, we performed it to
the rest of the class. They really liked it. Then we sat
in a circle and talked about what we had enjoyed
today. All too suddenly, the day was over and mum
was here to pick me up. I can't wait till next week.
PAGE 5.
The after lunch activity I ticked was: 'Act out a
battle scene between two gladiators.' So Zack, a
guy called Hamish, two girls and I began creating a
plot for the play. I got to be the emperor, while the
boys acted out the gladiators. At first one of the
girls protested, but she got to be the lady, and the
other girl my servant. They cut out some cardboard
swords, while I made an emperors' crown and then
we sorted out other costumes. When we practised
the play, Zack and Hamish fought around for a bit,
while the 'servant' asked if I would like anything to
drink. Hamish pinned Zack to the ground with his
'sword'. That got our attention, and he asked for my
permission to kill Zack (not literally though!). This was
my time to shine. I puffed out my chest and raised
my arm out towards the gladiators.
One Day School has a morning pass (for 6 – 8 year olds)
and afternoon pass (for 9 – 13 year olds) to give away to
our lucky Boredom Busters readers! For you chance to
head along to a half-day session at One Day School, write
100 words or less on why you might like One Day School.
Pop that in an envelope with your name and address on
the back, and post it to Caroline Hoar, One Day School,

How to Perform
pick up the handkerchief and
cover your hand with it.

your thumb from the
outside. Tell someone
in the audience that
your thumb has been
feeling “loose” lately, and
ask him or her to help
“tighten” it. hold out your
arm and tell him or her
to hold onto your thumb. as soon as they’re holding onto
it, turn around like you forgot something, take a couple of
steps back pull your hand out from under the handkerchief
with your thumb tucked into your fist. act surprised! They
think they have your thumb!

Celebrate Easter and look after the planet!
We have followed the Americans into the Halloween thing so how about
borrowing their egg hunt idea too?
create an egg hunt for the rest of the family – during easter you get to hide the
eggs and then set everyone to finding them. have a few little prizes on hand to
give whoever finds the most, the hardest to find one and the flashest one too.
having prizes will keep them all hunting long and hard. it’s a good idea to hide
them all in one room or one part of the garden so it’s not impossible!
give the easter bunny a run for his money by dyeing easter eggs the natural
way, using common foods and flowers.
• start with hard-cooked (boiled) eggs and refrigerate until ready to use.
• The longer you soak the eggs in the following dye liquids (of your choice),
the more intense the colours will be.
• if desired, before dyeing the eggs, draw shapes, pictures or inspiring words
on them with crayons or a piece of wax. The wax won’t absorb the colour so
the designs will show through. using a crayon, simply draw a design onto
your eggs. your crayon design will be accentuated by your choice of dye!
• Rubber bands are all you need to make tie-dyed eggs. use a collection of
different sized rubber bands. Wrap the rubber bands, one at a time, around
the eggs. Make sure to leave some of the egg shell exposed so it can be dyed.
• once the eggs are dyed to the colour you like, remove them from
nce dried completely, pull the rubber
the water and let them dry. once
bands off to reveal your banded design.
How to make
natural egg dyes:
• Wash hard-cooked (boiled) eggs in warm
soapy water to remove any oily residue that
may impede the colour from adhering to the
eggs. let eggs cool before attempting to dye.
• you need to use your own judgment about
exactly how much of each dye stuff to use.
except for spices, place a handful (or two or
three handfuls) of a dyestuff in a saucepan.
• add tap water to come at least one inch
above the dye stuff. noTe: This will be about
1 cup of water for each handful of dyestuff.
• Bring the water just to a boil, and then
reduce the heat to low. let simmer about 15
minutes or up to an hour until you like the
colour obtained. Keep in mind that dyed eggs
will not get as dark as the colour in the pan.
Remove the pan from the heat.
• pour mixture into a liquid measuring cup. add
2 to 3 teaspoons of white vinegar for each
cup of strained dye liquid. pour the mixture
into a bowl or jar that is deep enough to
completely cover the eggs you want to dye.
• use a slotted spoon to lower the eggs into
the hot liquid. leave the eggs in the water
until you like the colour. noTe: allow the
egg to sit in the tea for several hours or
overnight. The longer the egg soaks, the
deeper the final colour will be. if you plan to
eat the eggs be sure to do this step in the
refrigerator.
• When eggs are dyed to the colour you desire,
lift the eggs out with the slotted spoon.
let them dry on a rack or drainer. noTe: an
egg carton works nicely as a drying rack.
Be careful to handle the eggs gently and
minimally as some of the colours can easily
be rubbed off before the egg has dried.
• For a textured look, dab the still wet egg with
a sponge.
Building partnerships
between people & horses
• eggs coloured with natural dyes have a dull
finish and are not glossy. after they are dry,
you can rub the eggs with cooking oil or
mineral oil to give them a soft sheen.
Items to dye With:
• To make an egg blue, try canned blueberries
or purple grape juice
• To make an egg brown or beige, try coffee or
black tea
• To make an egg gold, try turmeric
• To make an egg green, try spinach leaves
• To make an egg orange, try carrots or paprika

Leo Calcasola, Back Flip.
The Tasman Skatepark Tour came, saw and
conquered during its 2012 summer circuit.
Massive public support, top class competitors,
and positive role modeling behaviour on show
across the region has reinforced the value of
skateparks in our communities.
Competition heats were hosted in Mapua, Takaka, Tapawera, Motueka,
Brightwater and Richmond, with riders in Skate, BMX, and Scooter age
group categories competing for competition points, prizes and prestige.
Leo Calcasola (15, Nelson) impressed in both scooter and BMX sections,
cleaning up the field in 11 out of the 12 competitions he entered in. His
signature ‘back flip’ delighted those privileged to watch a young man
fearlessly defying the physical laws of gravity.
Trent Luff (Nelson, 16), reigned supreme in the skate section,
performing consistently throughout the tour, stomping a vast array of
technically advanced tricks.
