THE CENTER
IS HERE FOR
ALL OF US
DEAR CENTER SUPPORTERS,
LGBT Community Centers are
among the most critical resources in our
nation. They provide the foundation
for strong local LGBT communities,
offer life-saving resources to the most
vulnerable among us and are a launching
pad for local and statewide equality
movements. According to a 2010 report
by the Movement Advancement Project
(MAP) and CenterLink, nationally
these centers provide vital information,
education, community and health
services to over 30,000 people per week
(www.lgbtmap.org.)

for more than 37 years. Providing safety
net services, information and resources
to LGBT youth, supportive housing
for formerly homeless LGBT youth,
addressing the struggles faced by our
older LGBT adults, continuing to serve
the HIV community, providing safe
spaces, education and support for our

Mission Statement
The mission of The San Diego LGBT Community Center is to enhance and
sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender
and HIV communities by providing activities, programs and services that
• Create community,
• Empower community members,
• Provide essential resources,
• Advocate for civil and human rights, and
• Embrace, promote and support our cultural diversity.
The San Diego LGBT Community Center
is the nation's second oldest and third largest
LGBT community center. Functioning as the LGBT
community's flagship organization, The Center
is led by a 20-member board of directors,
employs over 40 paid staff and utilizes more
than 800 community volunteers to achieve its
twin goals of promoting LGBT health and human
rights. The Center provides direct program
services to the many different facets of the
LGBT community, including youth, seniors,
families, LGBT Latino community members and
their families, and those struggling with HIV.

Core Center Programs
Behavioral Health
Services
The Center is home to the only community-based mental health clinic in all
of San Diego County dedicated specifically to the behavioral health needs of
the LGBT and HIV communities. It is
also the largest provider of dedicated
HIV mental health services in San Diego
County.
While The Center provides ongoing
individual, couple and family counseling,
we also provide counseling services to
youth, seniors, families, those struggling
with relationship violence and transgender persons who need assistance
with transition.
Family Matters
Family Matters serves approximately
400 LGBT and allied parents, their
children of all ages and their friends and
extended families. It offers support and
educational opportunities for all parents
and prospective parents, in addition to
playgroups and social opportunities for
families throughout San Diego County.
Along with its full range of programming,
Family Matters provides all children
growing up in LGBT-headed families a
place to see other families like theirs.
That recognition, along with the support
and affirming environment Family Matters
offers our families, is vitally important to
the development of our children.
Hillcrest Youth Center
The Hillcrest Youth Center is the only
drop-in center for LGBT youth ages
14-18 in San Diego County. It makes a
life-changing difference for the youth
who come through the doors each year.
Too often their families, churches or
schools have failed to protect and care for
them. With your support, The Center can
continue to be there for each one of them!

Latino/a Services
The Center’s Latino/a Services program
is a source of strength and support for
LGBT Latino/as and their families. The
program offers a range of services including Spanish-speaking support groups for
LGBT people and their families, a dropin center, client advocacy, transgender
support services, HIV/STD prevention
and education and so much more.

Sunburst Housing
Project
The Center’s Sunburst Housing Project
— which provides stable housing and
support services to 23 formerly homeless
LGBT and HIV-positive young people —
is a supportive housing program, offering
not just housing, but also a full range
of case management and support services
to help increase the opportunities for a
successful transition into young adulthood. Your continued support can help
change the lives of those who have been
too often tossed away, or left behind.
Senior Services
Women’s Resource
Center
Each month, more than 150 women
access support and resources through
the WRC. The WRC offers a diverse array
of educational and social programs and
the women’s coming out group remains
life saving and life-changing, providing
support to women at a truly significant
time in their lives.
Senior Services and our “50 and Better
Together” group strive to create a safe
place for those 50 and up to access
important resources and referrals related
to health care, social services and other
community activities.
As San Diego celebrates our growing
number of LGBT seniors, it is vitally
important that we are able to provide
services to the ever-growing Stonewall
generation of older LGBT adults whose
struggle for equality is the foundation
of today’s work.

Dining Out for Life® San Diego
Join us on Thursday, April 28, 2011, for The Center’s fourth annual
Dining Out for Life®.
D
ining Out for Life® is an international fundraising event involving the generous participation
of restaurants throughout the
country. In exchange for pledging 25%100% of their day’s food and liquor sales,
restaurants receive promotional materials
and are listed in a city-wide marketing
and advertising campaign in an effort to
increase customer traffic.
Dining Out for Life® raises funds to
benefit The Center’s HIV/AIDS services
and prevention programs.
AIDS Walk San Diego
AIDS Walk San Diego is San Diego’s largest one-day HIV/AIDS fundraiser and the
biggest non-governmental financial provider for HIV/AIDS in San Diego County.

IV/AIDS agencies in San Diego
County — serving thousands of
clients — rely on funds raised
at the annual AIDS Walk to help
provide essential prevention and care programs to thousands of men, women and
children living with HIV/AIDS.
Established as AIDS Walk San Diego in
1989, this event took place for two years
prior as the Walk for Life. Through a
unique funding partnership with the San
Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, AIDS
Walk San Diego is able to increase the
impact of the dollars raised at the event.
Funds from the Walk are combined with
donations from other philanthropists and
foundations to qualify for matching funds,
which are distributed to local HIV/AIDS
service providers.

streams, broken out as follows: 45% government grants, 14% individuals, 11% foundations,
10% fundraising, 3% corporate and 17% other. In 2010, the San Diego LGBT Community
Center has the following diverse revenue streams: 46% government grants, 36% individuals,
5% foundations, 7% fundraising, and 6% corporate.
LGBT Community Center Programs: In 2010, most Centers offer specific programming for
LGBT youth, LGBT people of color, HIV infected community members, transgender community
members and LGBT seniors. In 2010, the San Diego LGBT Community Center offers specific
