Tiger Woods recently filmed a national commercial. In the ad, he smashed paint-filled golf balls onto a large canvas, thereby creating a Jackson Pollock-like effect. The value of this work of art is estimated at $1 million. Can one call it art? Even Rembrandt was inspired by the game of golf. (See below.) Office location 112 W. I say “yes!” John (Gypsy) Ivetich says, “Yes” too! (Gypsy pictured at right.) In fact, he thinks it makes music as well. Gypsy is a musician and sound engineer. He bought his first Ping putter (Ping 1A) at a garage sale in the mid 1980s for $25. He still uses this putter. Gyspy describes the sound as an E flat when the putter strikes the ball. “Hearing the ping is a very soothing and relaxing sound. It also drives my opponents crazy. I was once offered $200 from an opponent for this putter,” he said. “He wanted to break it over his knee as the noise was driving him insane. “I putted extremely well during the entire g a m e . ” According to Rob Bednarz, Head PGA Golf Pro at Scherwood Golf in Schererville, Gypsy has “soft hands.” On a personal note, my first date with my husband was a golfing date. I asked him out knowing that he had never golfed. At the moment in time, another golf addict was born. I remember our “special vacation” that consisting of a mattress in the back of a mini-van, heading south, and hitting the courses in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. These golfing journeys require another column. Back to the art…. Eric Conen, Ping Sales and Field Representative for the Southwest Suburbs of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana considers the swing an artform. As a special 40th (almost) Birthday present, my husband insisted I trash my Grenada-Ford-blue15 year-old, Lady Gem Callways and buy some Pings. I resisted as he is my husband, and, remember, I beat him in the beginning. My life has changed tremendously since I got my Ferrari metallic orange G-10, graphite shaft, titanium, stainless, and engraved Pings. These clubs are a work of art. Not only am I part of the Ping family, but strangers approach me and admire my clubs. A very handsome gentlemen in a gold metallic Mercedes saw me cleaning the clubs in the parking lot of a local restaurant (waiting to have breakfast with editor Kim Mathisen); he greatly admired my clubs. He invited me for a round of golf, and I invited him to the gallery to see the Rembrandt. My love of art is well known by my daughter Alexis. She often stays at the gallery and actually knows most of the artists and their works. Now my love of the Ping club is part of her life as well. As a beginning golfer, my husband insisted that she too must have Pings. She is actually playing in a golf league, NIJGA, in her age group. Karsten Solheim was the creator of the Ping putter. This mechanical engineer used popsicle sticks and sugar cubes as his prototype for this putter. It was an effort to improve his game that created the “pinging” noise of the famous putter. Another of his putters was originally named the Answer, but as there were too many letters for the putter, it was changed to the Scottsdale Anser putter. Golf memorabilia is a popular item for framing at the gallery. This includes famous golf course flags, balls, ball markers, and limited edition prints. I wonder if the old adage, “The family that swings Pings together stays together” is true?
