Nine Ways Your Machine Operator Can Help Save You Money
Operator performance is a
significant factor that affects
construction companies’

many different, effective ways
to boost that performance.
Caterpillar offers these nine
tips for improving operator
performance across the board:

The Crooks School of Transportation Opens Its Doors
By: Matt Jones
Alberta’s Lethbridge College is rolling out new heavy
equipment training options
and a new trades and technology centre called the Crooks
School of Transportation.
The new programming and
facility are a result of investments from the provincial
government and a variety of
industry partners, and will
train technicians with specializations in automotive, parts,
agricultural equipment, and
heavy equipment.
“We’ve seen support come
from the industry, in dollars,”
says Oliver Twizell, Development Officer for Lethbridge
College. “Companies like
Headwaters Equipment
Sales, Southland International
Trucks, C.E.M. Heavy Equipment, Holden Agriculture
Ltd. and of course the Taylor
Family – all those companies
gave $100,000.”
The government of Alberta
contributed $65 million dollars towards the facility and
programming. All told, says
Twizell, it represents the single
largest capital investment in
trades and technology training in the region in at least 50
years. When the Crooks School
is complete and fully operational, it will provide space
for 880 new learners overall.
For heavy equipment training
specifically, that means adding
another 100 apprentices to
their current capacity of 252.
“The Crooks School of
Transportation houses the
heavy equipment training ,”
says Twizell. “The apprentices
are already training in there.
The rest of the trades facility
is currently being built. That
will be new classroom spaces,
but also training areas for the
welders, the wind turbine
technicians, the electricians,
the engineering technologies
as well as a 12,000-foot innovation space which is designed
for industry to come to the
table with problems that they
have to be solved.”
The Crooks School will be a
modern, flexible space which
will provide opportunities to
move equipment and people
more efficiently. Having all of
the different trades and technology fields training in one
facility, says Twizell, will allow
them to observe each other
during training, to combine
their knowledge and to apply
it in the real world.
“The heavy equipment
shop is not just four walls,
for example,” says Twizell.
“There’s actually windows
looking in to the training bay
so students who aren’t just
heavy equipment technicians
can walk by, the public can
walk by, industry can walk
by, and look in those windows and see those heavy
equipment technicians are
working on a transmission or
they’ve got part of that frontend-loader apart and they can
actually see what’s happening
there. That informal passing
of knowledge also goes a long
way for the modern student.”
Lethbridge College is in the
final legs of its fundraising
campaign, and the facility
is expected to be completed
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY !
in 2017. The college is working to arrange for an external
partner to provide specific
training and equipment for
the apprentices to use.

Report Increases British Columbia’s Natural Gas Supply
A new assessment released
today indicates British Columbia’s natural gas resources
are larger than previously estimated.
The report focuses on the
potential of the Liard Basin,
a resource area within the
boundaries of British Columbia, the Northwest Territories
and the Yukon. The new estimate for B.C.’s portion of the
Liard Basin is now 848 trillion
cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas,
up from the Province’s previous estimate of 210 tcf.
This new resource estimate
means B.C.’s total natural gas
potential now surpasses 3,400
tcf. If industry were able to
extract 20% of B.C.’s total re-
source over the long-term, economic activity and jobs in potential of the Liard Basin by Canada’s National Energy Oil & Gas Commission, the

Companies are investing a lot in B.C.’s natural gas, because the Montney
Formation in the northeast part of the province is rich in both gas and
natural gas liquids (light oil, condensate, butane, and propane). It makes
natural gas production there more economically viable than in most
other producing regions, states an Alaska Highway News April 4 article.

Since the day he bought
his J100B, Samson didn’t wait

explains Samson.
Samson expects to receive

me that it was not worth
buying one, because there
was already one available,”
he adds.
Samson transports his
J100B with a semi-trailer

a roller compactor because
many towns requires the
gravel to be compact when

Also, the machine have
proven to be very reliable.

arise, Tanguay was quick to
service the machine.

Road Show Demonstrates Your Equipment’s Potential
Topcon is touring Canada and the US
in order to educate people about the
company’s products through hands-on
demonstration and discussions with product experts.
The Topcon Technolog y Roadshow
showcases the latest construction, survey, civil engineering, precision farming,
architecture and design technologies in a
hands-on educational environment. The
free program features live demonstrations
and presentations focused on productivity
and profitability.
“Our Canadian market is strong, which
makes it an exciting place to begin the tour
that brings the latest industry solutions
practically to the attendee’s front door,” said
Scott Langbein, Topcon Positioning Group
Director of Marketing in the Americas.
Each show features the company’s 53foot mobile solutions centre (trailer), and
an array of dozers, excavators, and road
construction equipment—all equipped
with various Topcon technology.
Topcon technology provides solutions
for GNSS and robotics, BIM (business
information modelling) and 3D layout,
machine automation, jobsite management,
scanning and mapping, and enterprise
software solutions.
The Topcon Road Show Ontario dates are
organized by GeoShack Canada.
“GeoShack is committed to providing its
customers with cutting edge technology
and the most efficient products on the
market,” said Scott Beathard, President
of GeoShack. “Our knowledge of Top- The Gomaco GT 3600. By equipping the paver with Topcon technology, contractors can improve their productivity and

service technicians, as well as training
programs establish GeoShack as a leader
in this industry.”
The John Deere 350G. Nortrax Canada donated the use of most of the machines present at the road show Ontario locations.
Topcon’s latest technology can be equipped to a machine without a post to obstruct the operator’s view. Usually, on a
dozer, for example, a post is fastened to the dozer blade but the above Topcon equipment is attached to the roof of the
Cat D6N cab, greatly improving visibility. Also, Topcon attached the equipment to a Cat machine to show that their
equipment can be used with various manufacturers—not just John Deere machines.
The 3D-MCMAX (the yellow rectangle attached to the rear of the dozer blade) provides high-accuracy elevation, slope,
and blade rotation sensing in an integrated configuration resulting in improved speed, improved control, and improved
grading performance. The dual IMU sensors and new, unique algorithms deliver an integrated solution that locates the
sensitive GNSS technology safely inside the cab instead of out on the harsh environment of the blade. With its dual IMUs
(Inertial Measurement Unit) and mast less blade, the 3D-MCMAX increases on-grade performance maximizing both

Productive in Quebec
The Quebec-based transport and rental machine

company has worked over

the excavator. The machine,

The excavator is also extremely reliable in practice,”

he decided for this particular manufacturer.

easy to perform for the machine driver. For the design
of the crawler excavator,
right from the start Liebherr
paid attention to designing
the machine as simple and
concise as possible, as well
as improving accessibility.
Checking levels, for example
engine oil, is possible from
the display in the cab. And
through the use of an automatic central lubrication
system, valuable working
time can be saved and, at
the same time, an optimal
operating state of the machine can be guaranteed.
Jean-Yves Gauthier chose
the R 946 to be more flexible
and productive at work.
Transport Camille Dionne
1991 Inc., with its head office
in Quebec, was founded in
1962 and was initially active
in the areas of earthmoving
and civil engineering. Since
1980, the company has been
concentrating more and
more on the transport of
machines between Canada
and the United States before
being sold in 1991.
Jean-Yves Gauthier, arrived in 2001, undertook
a comprehensive restruct u r i ng of t he c ompa ny
including a renewal of 2/3
of equipment and expansion
of activities to the sale of
used equipment. In 2008,
Transport Camille Dionne
1991 Inc. joined a family
business in t he forest r y
sector to create the entity
“Crushing DLR”, specialized in the crushing and
recycling of concrete and
bituminous mix.
“Today we employ around
70 people and operate in
Quebec primarily in the
areas of structural engineering, forestr y, mining
and quarrying, as well as
in earthmoving and civil
engineering”, adds JeanYves Gauthier.
The Liebherr R 946 offers high performance with low fuel consumption.

Ontario Contractor Proves Mechanical Logging Good
Environmental Option in Shade Tolerant Forest
Hec Clouthier & Sons Inc.,
a Pembroke, Ontario-based
logging contractor, purchased
its first feller buncher in 2000,
later than in areas further
north, because full mechanization was being discouraged
by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). The Ministry
felt that forest machines did
too much damage.
“It took a lot of convincing
that it was the way to go in
this area,” says company coowner, Thomas Clouthier.
“We had to move in that
direction because we were
losing our manpower and our
Workman’s Compensation
rates kept climbing because
of the hazards.”
They bought their second
feller buncher in 2004 and are
now on their seventh unit. The
transition from cable skidders
to grapple skidders met the
same MNR resistance. The
company didn’t purchase its
first grapple skidder till 2006.
“Since purchasing the grapple skidder, our production
has close to doubled and our
landings last a lot longer because we are not doing as
much twisting and turning
as with the cable skidders,
but more lifting with the clam
on the back,” says Thomas.
“There is way less environmental damage because they
also have wider tires, so they
are floating a lot more in the
soft spots.”
It also provides them with
the opportunity to lay brush
on soft spots to again reduce
the amount of environmental
damage, which they couldn’t
do easily with cable skidders.
They recently purchased their
third grapple skidder.
Hec Clouthier & Sons is a
member of both the Nipissing Forest and Ottawa Valley
Sustainable Forest License
(SFL) areas, with their logging
taking place where it has traditionally occurred since the
early 1970’s, south of the community of Deux Rivières. This
area is known as the shade
tolerant Great Lakes forest,
with many hardwood species
like sugar maple, beech and
White pine, versus the boreal
forest located further north,
where the predominant
species are spruce, pine, fir
and poplar. On average, they
harvest between 50,000 and
60,000 cubic metres annually
during a season that spans
from June till mid-March,
and they market their own
wood fibre, with the understanding that Ontario mills

forest, they increased their production significantly and lowered their Worker’s Compensation Board premiums.

It’s possible that when
Wade Hemsworth penned
that jewel of Canadiana, ‘The
Log Driver’s Waltz’, he was
watching employees working for Hec Clouthier & Sons
Inc., given the company’s
long history in forestry and
its connection to Ontario’s
river systems.
Founded by Hec Clouthier
in 1938, his sons, Thomas,
Willy, Hector Jr., and Jimmy,
joined the company in 1977.
Thomas and Willy stuck with
the business and have nurtured the company from
hand fallers and horses, to
mechanical cable skidders,
and now into a full-blown
mechanical harvesting operation. Willy and Thomas are
preparing to one day pass the
family business on to the next
generation, as Thomas’s son,
Shannon, and Willy’s son,
Clyde are also part owners
in the business. Another of

Red pine logs harvested by Hec Clouthier & Sons are a common species
in the Great Lakes shade tolerant forest. Ontario mills have first choice to
purchase the logs.
Willy’s sons—Brett—is working with the company and
testing the waters to see if
forestry is for him.
“It wasn’t until we got into
this part of the woods when
we really had to start making a
lot of roads and we were cutting a little more volume,” says
Thomas. “So we got into the
slashers instead of the guys
bucking it up by hand on the

landing as well as hydraulic
loaders. Right now we have
four slashers and 12 skidders.”
The terrain south of Deux
Rivières is within the Canadian Shield and is variable
from gentle, rolling terrain
to steep slopes. Potential
large rock outcroppings can
appear anywhere. Thomas
describes the ground cover as
70 percent reasonable and 30
percent awful. For example,
they were logging in a highly
challenging area this past
summer, where their road
building costs tripled. On
steep terrain, the company
will employ hand falling and
cable skidders to access the
wood. Making business decisions on what harvesting
methods to use in which areas
is where their experience really pays off.
The fleet at Hec Clouthier
& Sons consists of two fairly
new John Deere 753J feller
bunchers, two John Deere
648H grapple skidders, a
John Deere 648 GIII grapple skidder, two John Deere
540G cable skidders, five 240
Timberjack cable skidders,
two 230 Timberjack cable
skidders, a 290 Serco loader
with a slasher, three 270 Serco
slashers, three Serco 8000
loaders attached to skidders,
five International log trucks
with 48-foot trailers, a John
Deere 200 excavator, a Cat
320 excavator, two 966 Cat
front end loaders, and a Terex
front end loader. The fleet also
consists of an assortment of
Cat dozers and three Champion graders used primarily
for road building.
Clouthier adds that despite
investing in newer equipment
to improve production over
time, the company tends to
hold onto some of its older
pieces because they come
in handy, such as using old
skidders as snow plows. Snow
plowing is an important task
in that area on the south
side of the Ottawa River between Pembroke and North
Bay because it is a snow belt
and typically accumulates
well over a metre of snow
annually. This is where mechanical harvesting really pays
off because the wood is still
It took some convincing, but Pembroke, Ontario logger, Hec Clouthier &
Sons, has proven that mechanical logging in this part of the province is
a safer form of logging that is as good if not better for the environment.
accessible versus the days
when it as harvested using
chainsaw crews and cable
skidders.
The company also places
older skidders at strategic
locations so that if a newer
skidder breaks down, they
can still maintain production.
“So that way, our pro-
duction is maintained at a
decent level, the operator
isn’t sent home and he still
gets paid,” says Thomas.
Maintaining good relations
with their 14 employees has
been a tremendous help for
the company over the years,
and several have been with
them for around 30 years.

Rototilt Introduces New
Compactor Line
Rototilt introduces a line
of hydraulic compactors that
are ideally suited to work
with Rototilt for the ultimate
in compacting f lexibility.
Mounted on a Rototilt, the
operator can work efficiently
on flat, sloped, or uneven
surfaces and compact easily
around obstacles or in tight
areas.
Designed to perform with
low flow requirements these
compactors can operate on
the standard Rototilt “extra
function” that eliminates
the need for a separate aux-
iliary hydraulic circuit. They
can also handle high back
pressure and are therefore
suited to operate on almost
any standard auxiliary hydraulic circuit.
Other features include
rubber isolation mounts in
compression versus shears
for longer life and all models
are available with a variety of
upper mount arrangements
to suit any Rototilt quick
coupler or can be attached
directly to the excavator or
backhoe.

Road Builders Prepare for Upcoming
Season at World of Asphalt
The 2016 World of Asphalt Show &
Conference and AGG1 Academy & Expo
are concluding their run March 22-24
as the most successful ever, with record
attendance of more than 9,000, and record exhibit and education numbers. The
co-located shows took place at the Music
City Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
Record registered attendance of more
than 9,000 is 18% over the record-setting
2015 shows and 38% growth compared
to 2013.
“This truly is the global gathering place
for our aggregates and asphalt industries,
where attendees could easily find the equipment and products to help their businesses
grow and prosper,” said Rick Feltes of LafargeHolcim, AGG1 chair representing the
National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association
(NSSGA).
“Education is also critical to stay competitive in today’s marketplace, and our record
education ticket numbers underscore the
value attendees place on the shows’ programs to help them succeed,” Feltes said.
“The show was well attended by Canadian
contractors from coast to coast,” says Dan
Church, Sales Manager, Bomag. “The majority of the contractors in attendance were
very positive about the prospects for work
in 2016, and were definitely in the buying
mode to purchase paving products for the
2016 season. There was a lot of interest in
milling products from all size contractors
who indicated that recycling projects was
in their future plans.”
“This year’s World of Asphalt show was
an excellent networking venue to visit with
eight of Amaco’s manufacturers all under
one roof,” says Jeff MacDonald, President,
Amaco Construction Equipment. “The show
floor is where I spent my time—looking at
new industry equipment and opportunities
for Amaco and the future.”
The sold-out show floor covered a record
157,000-plus net square feet of exhibit space—a 16% increase over the 2015
shows, with a record 500-plus exhibitors,
including 150 new to the shows. Industry-driven education programs achieved
record ticket sales of more than 13,000.
Attendees could take advantage of more
than 115 education sessions, including
the signature AGG1 Academy from NSSGA
and the People, Plants and Paving Training
Program from NAPA.
The NSSGA also offered a tour of the
Rogers Group Rutherford Quarry.
More than 20 allied industry, business,
and government groups served as official
show supporting organizations. The shows
are overseen by managing committees
of industry leaders to ensure they meet
the needs of attendees, exhibitors and all
industry stakeholders.
AGG1 is owned by NSSGA and World of
Asphalt is owned by NAPA, NSSGA, and
AEM. AEM produces both shows, which
target the business and professional-development needs of aggregates, asphalt,
pavement maintenance and traffic safety
industry professionals.
Vögele introduced the new Super 2000-3i asphalt paver; it replaces the Vision 5200-2i, and is the first of a line that will
supplant the Vision series. The new line introduces Vögele Dash-3 technology and its ErgoPlus 3 operating system to a highway-class paver specially suited for North American use. A large cooler assembly ensures that the power unit always delivers
its full output. The Super 2000-3i can be combined with the VF 600, the VR 600, and the AB 600 TV extending screeds. Coupled with the load sensing hydraulic system that provides flow and pressure only when required, the Carlson CP100 features
a large, 8.5-ton hopper capacity along with the highest lift angles in its class provides exceptional material flow. The CP100
also uses the innovative and Carlson unique horizontal sliding damper doors, a design that allows a class-leading 10 inches
of ground clearance below the auger box and keeps obstructions such as utility boxes from damaging the doors while open.
LeeBoy displayed the company’s 685 (above) and 685C motor graders at the show, as well as several new pavers. The
685 and 685C are the rebranded Champion C80 and C86 graders that LeeBoy acquired from Champion in 2012. The
685C Motor Grader is equipped with a sliding/tilting moldboard with a total side shift of 0.91 metres (3 feet). This feature
enables the operator to shift the blade in or out of hard to reach areas. The circle shift option provides the operator with
additional moldboard reach. The 3.35-metre (11-foot) wide moldboard features removable and adjustable shims that
keep the blade tight for fine grading.
The Weiler E1250A material transfer vehicle features an industry-leading cost-per-ton of asphalt placed, claims Weiler,
while providing a true remix of material through the patented twin-interlaced auger remix system. Wear components
and operating costs are reduced with only one elevator and one conveyor. Productivity matches the highest output of
other transfer vehicles at 600 tons-per-hour with 55 degrees of conveyor swing for offset paving.
Sakai featured some upgraded machines, including the SW654 (front) and R2H-4 (rear). The SW654, which replaces
the SW652, is a 58-inch, 9-ton class double drum roller. It is available with a standard drum or as an ND Series machine,
which allows the operator to switch between vibration and oscillation on the fly. A rear split drum allows the two sides of
drum to turn at different speeds, which decreases cracks in the mat. The biggest driver of change to the SW654 is the
engine upgrade. It is now a Tier 4 Final machine, equipped with a Kubota engine and Eco mode, which can save 30% on
fuel compared to the SW652.
Atlas Copco showcased the F1000W Tier 4 Final paver with new auger and tunnel system at World of Asphalt. Available
with either a center auger drive system or outboard auger drive system, Atlas Copco’s center drive auger system features a
six-inch-wide chain box—the thinnest in the industry—and 17-inch diameter flights to ensure continuous, uniform material
flow and decrease centerline segregation.

Based out of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, Royal Truck & Equipment displayed a model at the WOA show of the above truck.
The company is the manufacturer of above crash attenuator truck—a truck that is designed to carry supplies for contractors
working on a road or highway, as well as protect them from other traffic. The truck is equipped with truck mounted attenuators (TMAs) at the rear of the machine in order to absorb the impact if a vehicle rear ends the machine. By absorbing the
impact, the truck is not pushed forward into the contractors’ workzone, potentially running over any contractors. Royal is
now bringing to market an autonomous attenuator truck, so no one has to be in the driver’s seat of a truck that may be hit
by oncoming traffic. The ATMA(Autonomous TMA Truck) is outfitted with an electro-mechanical system and fully integrated
sensor suite that will enable Leader/Follower capability that allows the ATMA to follow a lead vehicle completely unmanned.
Hyundai displayed the HR110C-9 single drum roller, which is one the company’s six Series 9 compaction rollers that the
company introduced last year. Hyundai’s unique HA control delivers a continuous tractive effort at the axle and drum for
automatic adaptation to various soil types and conditions. Dual frequencies and amplitudes provide two levels of vibration
for efficient surface and deep soil compaction.
Haver & Boecker’s Kristen Randall points out the benefits of the company’s Pulse vibration analysis system. The technology
is designed to monitor the health of vibrating screens to ensure optimum screening performance and equipment durability.
The Pulse system uses an industrial-grade tablet computer that connects wirelessly with eight tri-axial sensors. The sensors
attach to key places on the equipment and send up to 24 channels of data to the tablet, which displays a real-time view of
the machine’s orbit, acceleration, deviations, and more. Customers can store all vibration analysis reports electronically in
an online database, the Pulse Information Portal.
Roadtec showed several new products including the company’s half-lane Roadtec RX-600e milling machine, which is now
equipped with the ACE Grade and Slope Control System. The Automated Control of Elevation or ACE System from Roadtec
uses a network of grade and slope sensors combined with one central microcontroller that is designed to automate the
elevation of the milling machine. The cold planer is available with four-track assemblies or optional three-track assemblies.
Milling machines with three-track suspensions are expected to be more maneuverable in the cut, lower in weight, while
four-track machines are designed to provide greater tractive effort and flotation.
The new highway class Bomag BW206AD-5 tandem vibratory roller boasts a larger, 1.4-metre (55-inch) drum diameter than previous 2.14-metre (84-inch) drum models to deliver a smoother finish and improve mat quality. Its large
drum diameter puts more impact surface area in contact with the asphalt to help prevent mat pushing and shoving,
and eliminate the potential for bow waves in front of the drum, even when working at higher speeds on tender mats.
Exclusive Ecomode operation allows for 8% higher engine horsepower than the roller it replaces, while significantly
saving on fuel consumption.
Volvo introduced their DD105 double drum roller. It is a global machine with features that are important in many markets
across the globe, such as power, comfort, and fuel economy. One of its unique features is that there is a pump on each
drum that are capable of knowing when to spray without operator action. Both pumps work in alternation depending on

A lot of the changes that
were made to the MT6 were
the result of customer feedback. For example, the MT6
now has joystick control.
This change improves ease
More sound absorbing insulation on the MT6 decreases noise in the cab. The
range on the tilt steering column was increased so it is easier for operators
to enter and exit the cab. The ROPS cab and front frame are one weldment

of use and productivity. Also,
customers wanted greater
visibility so Trackless Vehicles increased glass area by
20%. The large front corner
windows allow the operator
to keep a close eye on the
attachment when working
up close to a wall, tree, post,
fire hydrant, or other obstruction.
“The operators like how

village per night and now we
are able to complete up to
three villages in one night.”

April 1—no foolin’.
“Wirtgen has had several new models launch in
the past 6 to 12 months,
and Wajax wanted to get
as many on display so customers could take a closer
look at them,” says David
Reid, Wirtgen Product Manager , Wajax Equipment. “It
also gave us the opportunit y to run t wo seminars.
One seminar focused on
Wirtgen’s new telematics
system—WIDOS, while the
second focused on the latest
improvements to R hino
cutting tools for milling
machines.
The yard and shop were

Wajax represents including
Wirtgen, Hamm, Vogele,
JCB, and Hitachi.
“Beyond all the business,
it was also a great chance to

Attendees of the Wajax open house in Mississauga talk to a product expert about the W 220. The W 220 provides
the milling width and depth of the heavier W 250i—Wirtgen’s biggest and most powerful mill—but with a lower
weight that enables it to more easily meet legal weight load limits. The W 220 (just as the W 250i) will mill up to
356 mm (14 inches) deep, at a nominal milling width of 2.20 metres (87 inches).

Ontario Manufacturer Meets Demands of Ontario
throttle to the desired rpm.
At this point the pedal will
only stroke the transmission
to move the vehicle.
The engine on the MT6 has
been upgraded to an 86-kW
(115 hp), Tier 3 Cummins
engine. Other powertrain
components consist of a
Sauer Danfoss hydrostatic system, Dana axles, and
Twin Disc PTO clutch. The
new engine permits operation in two modes: work
and travel so it saves on fuel
costs and decreases emissions.
The front and rear axles
have limited slip differentials which provide excellent
traction under normal circumstances. However, if
you desire the ultimate in
traction, electric locking
differentials are available as
an option. The front, rear, or
both can be engaged for use
in low gear. With this option,
the axle still has the limited
slip feature when the electric lockers are disengaged.
Having both limited slip and
electric lockers improves
the MT6’s performance and
versatility.
While in travel mode, the
operator simply drives the
tractor exactly like a car,
pushing on what appears to
be the gas pedal. This controls engine rpm, like it does
in a car, but also strokes the
hydrostatic transmission
making the vehicle move.
This avoids the age-old problem of hydrostatic tractors
having the engine screaming
at high rpm, which wastes
fuel. Driving the tractor, and
even plowing snow, can all
be accomplished while in
travel mode.
“The people at Trackless
Vehicles and at Joe Johnson
Equipment—our Trackless

Holliday.

YOUR
MATERIAL
HANDLING
S LUTION
We understand how tough material handling can
be, so our wheel loaders are developed to be highly
durable, low maintenance and fuel efficient. Despite
popular belief, you don’t need a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to
be Tier 4 compliant. JCB’s NO DPF solution means no need
for periodic regeneration, meaning more up-time, more output,
more productivity and increased safety. JCB’s engine solution
was designed without a DPF because we know that time is
money. That’s why our wheel loader range is DPF free.

SCRAP & RECYCLING
FPT Chooses the
Right Sennebogen
for Every Job
With scrap recycling facilities throughout the Great
Lakes region and down to Florida, Ferrous Processing
& Trading (FPT) is involved in every aspect of the industry. The company’s Senior Executive Advisor to the
President, Tony Benacquisto, is charged with keeping
all of those facilities equipped to perform profitably.
“I’m the one that goes out to find new equipment,”
he explains. “I have to find the most efficient way of
doing something and see how we can improve our
bottom line.” Among Benacquisto’s recent “finds” is
a new electric drive Sennebogen 840 scrap handler,
commissioned in March of 2015 at FPT’s Strong Steel
Products yard in Detroit, Michigan. He chose the 840 to
feed flattened cars and #2 scrap to the largest shredder
in the region. But this isn’t the first time his search for
cost-effective equipment has led him to Sennebogen.
A “CLEAN SLATE” APPROACH TO BUYING
All tolled, FPT operates several Sennebogen material handling machines. The Strong facility also has
a rubber-tired version of the new machine, an 840 M
model, and another electrically powered machine, a
Sennebogen 835 R-HD, is running at the nearby FPT
Kronk facility. “We’ve had the 835 electric going for
four years and had great success with it. So we had the
measurable results from it to compare numbers when
we were looking for a new electric drive machine.”
Although Benacquisto appreciates the Sennebogen
equipment that’s in his fleet, he takes a “clean slate”
approach every time he searches for new scrap handlers. He collects input from his purchasing team, his
maintenance staff, equipment operators and FPT’s
engineering department, also located at FPT’s head
office in Detroit. The goal is simply to identify the best
overall solution for each specific process. And when
Sennebogen proves to have the right machine, Benacquisto still needs to choose the right Sennebogen
model and configuration for the job.
THE EFFICIENCY OF ELECTRIC DRIVE
To match up with the mega-shredder, Benacquisto
knew he wanted electric drive. “I’ve had electric equipment in the past, going back to our electric overhead
cranes. I knew the efficiency of electric as compared
to diesel; when you add the rising price of diesel to
the maintenance cost of diesel, it far exceeds what
electricity costs. With the way the price of diesel was
jumping a year ago, it just made sense to go electric.”
“We did look at other electric machines—all the
different colours” he continues. “We tried another one
first but it did not meet our expectations. It was a big
disappointment. Then we ordered the Sennebogen 840.”
FOCUSED ON THROUGHPUT
The 835 R-HD electric drive at FPT’s Kronk facility
is mounted on crawler tracks and is powered through
a tether cable that allows it to travel within a limited
range. The new 840, however, is mounted on a fourpoint floating structure with a pylon in a fixed location
adjacent to the shredder.
Jeff Beebe is part of FPT’s purchasing group and
works on site with the 840 scrap handler every day.
“We had our yard arrangement all laid out before we
purchased the machine,” Beebe says. “The plan was to
unload trucks and to feed the shredder, all within the
same swing radius. The machine we chose, the 840, is
mounted on a floating pedestal and has enough reach
that no mobility is needed.”
The Sennebogen gives the operator 5.7 metres (18.5 feet) of height
for better visibility, safety, and productivity.
FPT’s Jeff Beebe stands in front of the Sennebogen 840 scrap
handler. According to Beebe, the reach on the 840 is so great
that the company doesn’t need it to be mobile.
The Strong Steel site is a nine-acre yard and processes in excess of 200,000 tons per year. The operation is
purely focused on shredder throughput. Flattened
automobiles arrive on trailers. They are fed through
the shredder and ferrous material is separated by a
magnet. The clean material is shipped to customers by
rail and truck. The Sennebogen machine was chosen
to perform simply, quickly, and reliably.
Benacquisto says he was very comfortable with choosing Sennebogen from the beginning. “I had visited the
factory in Germany and met Erich Sennebogen, so I
knew their abilities. Constantino Lannes (President of
Sennebogen LLC) was here at our site for our negotiations on the machine. We expected similar performance
to our 835, but we went up to the 840 model for added
throughput.”
The electric 835 R-HD has now been in service for
four years and has logged over 45,000 hours on the
original electric motor. To Jeff Beebe, that shows him
electric drive was the right way to go. “That could be
up to four engines or more,” he agrees. “We have an
excellent rebuild program with another supplier of
diesel machines, but this system surpasses even that.”
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Watching the 840 operate, Beebe comments, “It’s
nice and quiet, too! Noise and pollution are definite
factors; it’s noticed in the yard. The operator likes that,
especially with Sennebogen’s elevating cab, there’s
more separation from the machine and vibration. No
exhaust blowing on you.”
“A big issue with new machines today, especially big
machines, is the emissions, the Tier 3 and Tier 4 stuff.
The electric just takes that right out of the equation.”
Beebe recalls that the operator was “a little leery” of
the 840 when he first began to run it. “The pedestal gives
the machine a 3-metre (9.8-foot) rise, and the elevated
cab adds another 2.7 metres (8.8 feet) of height. It took
some getting used to—to work up that high, but now
he rides it up and down like an elevator.
SERVICE SUPPORT
The arrival of the 840 at Strong Steel coincided with
the arrival of Alta Equipment as the regional distributor
for Sennebogen equipment. Benacquisto was pleased
to see that Alta is opening a new branch in Detroit,
becoming the only heavy equipment dealer within the
city limits. “They are a young company, working hard
and doing well,” Benacquisto reports.
Having factory-trained field support for the Sennebogen machines completes the productivity package
for FPT. “In terms of the electric machine, the perks
to it greatly outweigh the downside. This unit exceeds
our value proposition.”

Brokk’s TC120 Tank Cutter Attachment Enhances Versatility
Brokk Inc.’s TC120 Tank
Cutter attachment, manufactured by their sister
company, Darda, delivers
better cutting control and
versatility.
The 430-mm-by-1190mm (47-inch-by-17-inch
TC120 Tank Cutter is used
with the Brokk 160, 260,
and 400 models to deliver extraordinary precision.
The TC120 brings flexibility
to the jobsite with its hydraulic rotation capabilities
and five-inch-wide jaws. It
exerts 75 tons of cutting
force at 7,250 psi to easily
cut through half-inch thick
steel plate.
Although this attachment
can be used in a variety of
applications, such as in salvage yards and balers, it’s
commonly employed for
cutting steel tanks, pipes
and vessels.
The most common
method of cutting steel, an
open-flame torch, poses a
fire hazard when cutting
into flammable tanks and
vessels, and it can raise the
risk of exposure to harmful emissions. By using the
electric Brokk machine with
the TC120 instead, operators
reduce the risk of exposure
to toxic emissions as well as
prevent fires.
“This revolutionary product defines versatility. It
combines power, efficiency,
and, above all, safety,” said
Mike Martin, Brokk Inc.’s
Vice President of operations.
“Safety is vital. When cutting
tanks, you never know what
you’ll run into. You don’t
have to worry about that
with the Brokk machine and
TC120 combination. Since
it’s electric, you reduce the
risk that comes with cutting
into potentially flammable
tanks.”
In addition to heightened
safety, the TC120 improves
productivity by continuously
cutting steel.
“For the first time in the
industry, there’s a safe,
easy, high-productivity
option for cutting steel,”
Martin said. “Combining
the Brokk machine with the
TC120 attachment is like
powering a giant scissors;
it slices through steel like a
scissor to paper.”
The TC120 attachment
also benefits contractors
with its extended reach.
Brokk machines’ remote
capabilities, coupled with
arms that extend as far as
8.2 metres (27 feet), easily
reach places others can’t,
improving efficiency while
decreasing labour costs.
Because it’s attached to a
Brokk machine, it reduces
the risk of injury to labourers
by eliminating the need to
climb scaffolds and ladders
with torches to get to hardto-reach spaces.
The TC120 is one of many
Brokk attachments that can

WHEEL LOADERS
Ten Tips for Lowering
Total Cost of Ownership
When trying to manage the total cost of
ownership of your wheel loader, there are
several things you can do that will give you
an edge on your bottom line—and your competition. Here are ten considerations that can
help you lower your operating and ownership
costs and increase your profitability.
3.MATCHING AXLES TO OPERATION Pairing the wrong axle/tire configuration
to a specific wheel loader application can
cause increased wear to the tires, and can
put the axles under unnecessarily excessive
load. Properly managing this lowers costs
over time and prevents potential long-term
damage to the axles.
1. RIGHT-SIZING EQUIPMENT

The operator doesn’t need to monitor or
control the angle of the bucket. They can
concentrate on moving the machine, hitting
the pile, approaching the truck/hopper, or
running the load a distance. The bucket
will locate itself in exactly the right location
that was set up by the operator. This type
of machine automation is a surefire way to
increase jobsite and equipment efficiency,
and lower your long term costs.
5.ATTACHMENT MAINTENANCE
reduce equipment costs, including methods
to reduce idle time, operating the machine
in a manner that puts the least amount of
wear and stress on an undercarriage, and
proper use of bucket controls and functions
to optimize fuel efficiency.
A wheel loader may be able to perform the
same loading cycle in an eco/fuel efficiency
mode as it would operating at full RPM in
a standard or power boost setting. In this
case, there is no practical reason to run at
a higher power mode and burn excess fuel.
Identifying and eliminating unnecessarily rough or unsafe operating practices
will also reduce possible damage to the
machine and the jobsite, which can result
in unplanned out-of-pocket expenses and
potential downtime for repairs.
If you’re working with an attachment with
a worn-down cutting edge or bucket teeth,
your wheel loader is going to work harder,
burn more fuel, spin your tires and take more
time and wages to perform the job at hand.
A worn out bucket attachment can cause
lots of unnecessary wear on the machine
and reduce jobsite efficiency. Remember
to always take the time to make sure that 9.PLANNED MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS
your attachments are properly maintained.
Planned maintenance contracts can save
equipment owners a significant amount

allows your staff to focus on the job at hand.
7.TELEMATICS
One of the best ways to manage your
total cost of ownership, as well as improve
productivity and simplify maintenance
procedures is through telematics. Telematics systems can give equipment owners
unprecedented amounts of data on how
a machine is being utilized in the field,
and can offer insights that can help lower
ownership costs. It is important to take the
time to review the data and understand
items such as fuel consumption and idle
time. A higher level of awareness of your
machines’ idle times vs. working times will
have an impact on your operating costs.
10.UTILIZING REMANUFACTURED PARTS
Remanufactured parts are available now
more than ever, and are a great option to
consider for owners who want to keep their
costs down. In order to better serve the needs

to select information displayed on the “quad screen,”
which can simultaneously
display, for example, axle oil
temperatures, instant fuel

A newly designed engine
hood allows easier routine
service and features a new
actuator that speeds opening
to about 35 seconds. The new
impact-resistant hood exhibits greater durability during
operation as well as improved
cooling airflow and enhanced
rearward visibility. Optional

Komatsu America Corp. Introduces
the New WA600-8 Wheel Loader
Komatsu America Corp.,
has introduced t he new
WA60 0 -8 wheel loader.
Equipped with an EPA Tier
4 Final certified engine,
this latest addition to the
wheel loader family combines an enhanced lockup
torque converter function
and SmartLoader logic to
achieve low fuel consumption and high travel speeds.
By opt i m i z i ng control of engine power, and
i mprov i ng power t ra i n
and hydraulic efficiency,
t he WA600-8 consu mes
up to 13% less fuel than its
Tier 3 predecessor. Also,
the standard bucket capacity increased to 9.2 cubic
yards and the bucket now
fills easier, retains material
better and provides better
visibility, contributing to
machine efficiency and productivity. Komatsu Auto Idle
Shutdown reduces idle time
and saves fuel.
“W it h sig n i f ica nt enhancements in production
capacity and fuel economy,
the WA600-8 is designed
to ma x im ize production efficiency in loading
off-highway trucks or loadand carr y applications,”
said Rob McMahon, Product Manager for Komatsu
America. “Full rear fenders
with steps and handrails at
both sides of the machine
add convenience for daily
inspections. And operators
will appreciate enhancements in cab comfort and
machine stabilit y,” McMahon said.
The machine features
Komatsu’s SmartLoader
Logic, which, when combined with the enhanced
lockup torque converter that
activates in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
gear, provides optimal engine torque for improved
acceleration, hill-climbing
ability, a higher top speed,
and fuel savings, says Komatsu.
The machine’s Komatsu
Diesel Particulate Filter
(K DPF) a nd ot her a f ter
treatment components are
designed in conjunction
with the engine for efficiency
and long life. (More than
98% of KDPF regeneration
is performed passively, with
no action required of the
operator and no interference
with machine operation.)
Pioneering Komtrax Plus
telematics system and monitor provides key machine
metrics, including KDPF
status and DEF-level data,
f uel consu mpt ion, plus
performance information
collected and sor ted by
operator ID.
A seven-inch, full-colour,
high resolution monitor delivers a sharp picture and
vivid colours, even in harsh
light, says Komatsu. A separate, full-colour, rear-view
monitor comes standard and
improves line-of-sight. Komatsu integrated load meter
data is available on the machine monitor and remotely
via the web.
The new Komatsu WA600-8 wheel loader features a new, enhanced auto-dig function that reduces operator effort
required to fill the bucket. The machine’s Variable Traction Control system and Modulated Clutch system provide
optimal tractive effort for various ground conditions.

articulated front-end loader. Based in Euclid, Ohio the
company had been around
since the early 1900’s and
played an important role
in the ever-evolving and
expanding earthmoving
equipment field.
Among their innovations
were pull-type wheeled
scrapers in the ‘20’s followed
quickly by bottom-dump
units and by the early ‘40’s
Euclid diesel powered scrapers and the iconic ‘Euc’
off-road rear dump haulers
became essential in aggregate
production, quarries and on
construction projects. In the
mid-1950’s Euclid became
part of the General Motors
Corporation. The race was
on with other manufacturers
and the Euclid Division was
a major player producing
larger and more powerful
equipment to meet the needs
of contractors in the decades
following.
The Euclid L-20 model was

of some 74 kW (100 hp), and
matched up with an Allison

was rated as a two-cubic-yard

New 5-Speed Power Shift Option Provides
Improved Performance & Acceleration
The 427 features a lower-speed cooling fan, low idle speed, an optional engine shutdown mode, and selectable
engine modes (power and economy).
JCB’s 427 wheel loader features technology commonly
seen only in larger machines
for improved productivity
and performance.
The wheel loader is powered by a 119-kW (158-hp)
Cummins QSB 6.7-litre engine that does not require
a diesel particulate filter
or exhaust aftertreatment.
With a variable geometry
turbocharger, the Cummins engine incorporates
a high-pressure common
rail fuel injection system,
cooled exhaust gas recirculation, and a diesel oxidation
catalyst.
The 427 features a lower-speed cooling fan, low idle
speed, an optional engine
shutdown mode, and selectable engine modes (power
and economy). These selectable engine modes allow the
427 to be matched to its ap-
plication, with the economy
mode providing increased
efficiency for lighter tasks by
limiting the engine speed to
1800 RPM.
A ZF four-speed automatic
power shift transmission
comes standard with a new
five-speed power shift box
also available. This option
provides improved driving
performance and acceleration as a result of the smaller
steps between gears. A lockup torque converter on the
five-speed transmission activates in gears 2-5, reducing
losses from the transmission
and improving productivity,
particularly when climbing
hills, travelling, and carrying
heavy loads.
The 427’s axles benefit
from wheel speed braking,
1500-service hour intervals
and increased service life
in heavy-duty applications
with the option of sintered
pads. The JCB Smooth Ride
System can be permanently activated, improving the
machine’s performance with
attachments including snow
plows and sweepers.
A 106 cubic-foot cab features a new instrument
cluster with analog dials
and a full-colour LCD monitor complete with intuitive
menu system that delivers a
wide array of real-time information. The 427 is available
with the choice of a conventional multi-lever layout, a
single joystick with separate
auxiliary control lever and
a joystick with proportional control auxiliary controls
built in.
HT (high torque) and ZX
(Z-bar linkage) arm options
further allow the wheel
loader to be tailored to each
individual application.

HL940TM.
Like other Hyundai HL900
series wheel loader models,
this first Tool Master model
includes Hyundai’s proprietary onboard weighing
system, which is accurate to
+/- 1%. The system has automatic and manual settings
for monitoring individual
and cumulative bucket load
weights. System measurements are displayed on the
multi-function screen in the
cab, providing reliable loadweight monitoring to support
efficient production management. However, there is no
onboard printer to facilitate
certified load measurements.
“The HL940TM—and our
entire HL900 series—continue the Hyundai wheel
loader tradition of power,
productivity, and ease of
operation, while adding new
creature comforts, productivity enhancements and
additional efficiencies that
make these machines quality leaders in the market,”
said Corey Rogers, Marketing
Manager, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas.
The Hyundai HL940TM
wheel loader, like other
HL900 series models, delivers up to 5% greater
productivity and 10% lower
fuel consumption than previous 9A series models. HL900
series loaders achieve greater
fuel economy as a result of

visibility. For added operator
comfort, in-cab sound levels
were reduced by 3 dB, mak-
ing this one of the quietest

Hyundai.
An optional Smart Start
ignition system for passwordor Bluetooth key-enabled
machine start is also available on the HL900 series
machines.

The new Hyundai HL940TM wheel loader is the first Tool Master wheel
loader added to the HL900 series. These models feature parallel linkage,
which is especially effective in fork applications where level lifting is
important. As with other Hyundai HL900 series wheel loaders, the cab
on the HL940TM is up to 10% larger than previous models, and has been
reconfigured for additional floor space and improved visibility.

Redesigned Compact Loader Makes Canadian Trade Show Debut
F r a n c e m a n u f a c t u rer, Pichon Industries, has
introduced their newly redesigned line up of wheel
loaders, which range from
19.5-45 kW (26-60 hp) , with
the exhibition of the Pichon
45.60 at the London Farm
Show, March 2-4, London,
Ontario.
Strength, power, and manoeuvreability are the major
assets of this new range,
claims the manufacturer.
The machine line was de-
signed with public works and
farms in mind.
The most striking characteristic of the new loader
series is of course the design.

The Pichon 45.60 on display at the London Farm Show, London, Ontario,
March 2-4, is the largest in the line of Pichon compact wheel loaders. It
has a lift height of 4.5 metres (14.8 feet) and a lift capacity of 3,200 kg
(7,000 pounds).
It is specially conceived to
offer a panoramic view and
integrate the four types of user-protection frames: ROPS,
FOPS, canopy, and cabin.
The mudguards of the series
are designed with a curve
integrated to match the machine’s body so as to keep the
loader streamlined.
The counterweights behind, which are integrated to
the chassis help to increase
the loading capacities. Special attention has also been
made to facilitate maintenance, to access to the engine’s
compartment, to different
points of control and greasing through an opening at the
side and rear of the loader.
The cabin’s interior and
accessibility to the driver’s
seat have been improved for
the comfort of the user. The
driver has a better visibility
thanks to a rear hood (domeshape) made of resin. As for
the canopy and cabin version, the front part of the roof
has a glass panel to allow
users to follow the tool from
the ground to the height of
its working range.
All models are equipped
with Cat turbo Tier 3 engines for a maximum speed
of 25 km/h (40 mph) and
Bosch Rexroth hydrostatic
transmission for better performance and reliability.
This is a heavy-duty loader
made entirely of steel for a
longer service life, plus automotive quality painting by
cataphoresis. A robust central articulation offers a wide
steering angle, while preserving sufficient oscillation. As
well, the telescopic chassis
is heavy-duty designed and
manufactured.
