Welcome to the RA,
a not-for-profit Association serving our community for over 70 years.
Your Association
NEW - as of July 2016
The Recreation Association of the Public Service of Canada
(the RA) is a not-for-profit association open to everyone
who wishes to join. Designed with members in mind,
activities and programs cater to a wide variety of interests.
As a not-for-profit, “profits” are reinvested into the Capital
(facilities and equipment), programming and people
to ensure your experience is one that leaves a lasting
impression.
• All current RA members are no longer required to
renew their Association Membership upon payment
of their club or activity membership fees. Members
who continuously maintain their membership in their
chosen Club or activity will remain an Association
member in good standing for the duration of their
involvement with the RA.
As a member, you have a voice in your Association
and your comments and suggestions are welcome.
Your membership gives you access to a vast array of
membership-based Clubs, leagues, programs and activities,
helps to maintain and develop our multi-purpose facilities
and services, offers you free parking while participating in
activities at both the RA Centre on Riverside Drive and the
Rideau Tennis Club at 1 Donald Street, and allows you to
take advantage of RA Member Benefits.
When you initially become involved in the Recreation
Association (the RA) by joining a membership-based
Club, program or activity at the RA Centre and the Rideau
Tennis Club, you are required to purchase an Association
membership. This Association membership will remain
current as long as you stay involved, without interruption,
by renewing your membership in your Club, league,
program or activitiy as required.
Membership is open to anyone who is willing to abide by
the Members’ Code of Ethics. In addition, the Association
is committed to providing an environment that is free
of violence and harassment for all members, visitors
and employees. Copies of the Member Policy relating to
Harassment, Discrimination, Violence or Breach of the RA
Code of Ethics are available from the Member Services
desks.
• All RA members who are solely RA members will
continue to renew their Association Membership
annually.
• New members will be required to join the RA by

NEW – Major Revision to
the RA Membership Model
Aikido is an efficient, practical and lawful system of
self-defense. It relies only on the strength strictly
necessary to subdue an attacker. Virtually an
unlimited range of techniques are designed to redirect
an opponent’s energy against them, while none aim
to cause permanent damage. Students develop selfconfidence and flexibility, along with physical and
mental fitness. Instruction is provided by a certified
black belt instructor.
Club
RA Aikido offers personalized teaching to youth,
women and men of all ages. Lessons are offered to all
levels from white to black belt. Our quality instruction
program allows participants to improve their fitness
level while learning the solid basics of martial arts.
Participants must be 14 years of age or older. The
Aikido members also have access to the dojo for
additional practice after formal evening classes, as
well as special practice and instructional sessions
on Saturdays between 8:30am and 9:50am. In
addition, trainees have the opportunity to continue
their practice over most of the summer, according to
a modified schedule determined in consultation with
their instructor.
The Club will host an Open House
on Monday, September 12 and
Wednesday, September 14
from 6:00 to 7:30pm.
Participants interested in trying their hand at
this Martial Art are welcome to attend
a class as our guest.

This year, the RA embarked on a
comprehensive overhaul of our membership
model. This project, which is the culmination
of many months of planning, is designed
to enhance convenience, simplify renewal
and streamline systems to allow us to better
manage the day to day operation.
Get involved in your Association!
Many improvements are planned with some
already in place. The most noticeable change
is that RA members are no longer required
to renew their RA Association Membership.
By maintaining their Club membership they
will remain an Association member in good
standing.
Meeting packages will be available for members to pick up from the Member Services Desks as of
Thursday, March 16, 2017. At this meeting proposed changes to the Association’s Constitution &
Bylaws will be presented for ratification by the voting members.
Please refer to page 3 of this guide for more
information.

the Club’s instructional program.
Archery Instruction
Level 1 and Level 2 Archery classes are offered using RECURVE BOWS. Classes are available to Juniors (10 yrs and
older), Families (parent and child), and Adults. Equipment is available for Level 1 & Level 2 classes. Class schedule

covers the fundamentals of recurve target archery.
Archers are taught the 10 steps of the archery shot:
stance, nocking, bow hand, string hand, pre-draw,
anchor, aim, release, follow-through and relax. Archers
will have a good working knowledge of archery and
will be prepared for further development in the sport.
All classes are one hour in length.
Please note: It is mandatory to attend the
first class of level one as important safety
information is covered. Refunds and transfers will

NEW – Major Revision to
the RA Membership Model
This year, the RA embarked on a
comprehensive overhaul of our membership
model. This project, which is the culmination
of many months of planning, is designed
to enhance convenience, simplify renewal
and streamline systems to allow us to better
manage the day to day operation.
Many improvements are planned with some
already in place. The most noticeable change
is that RA members are no longer required
to renew their RA Association Membership.
By maintaining their Club membership they
will remain an Association member in good
standing.
The RA is pleased to announce a new Member Advantage.
RA members now receive member discounts
with CAA North East Ontario.

We're building for our future!
Introducing The House of Sport!
We are pleased to share with you an
exciting new initiative being undertaken
by your Association.
The RA Board of Directors has
unanimously endorsed a business plan
to develop "The House of Sport" at the
RA Centre.
Proceeds from this project will assist
the Association in creating further
investment into the RA facilities
and infrastructure. Over time, the
Association will be strengthened
through program and service
enhancements, thus creating a richer
experience for members.
“Our 75 year old not-for-profit organization
has taken a gigantic step forward. The House
of Sport will create new platforms for sport
development in a unique and innovative
environment not found in sport across the
country,” shares RA Board President
Dennis Seebach. “Our increased alignment to
sport will benefit our current member clubs and
position the Association to grow and develop
further in the future.”
A house of sport, as a general concept,
is a collection of National Sports
Organizations (NSOs) and MultiSport Organizations (MSOs) that have
adjacent office space contained in one
building (the "house"). This innovative,
collaborative and connected sports hub
will be the first of its kind in Canada.
organizations on a regular basis and
develop a modern brand identity for
our Association. The House of Sport will
strengthen our connection to Canadian
sport by supporting the organizations
that help athletes grow and develop
from playground to podium. This is
something the RA has been passionately
contributing to for the last 75 years.
More importantly, the Association will
work to leverage this critical mass of
organizations sharing a passion for
Canadian sport, to attract large-scale
sponsors and partners to the RA and
provide the Association a platform for
growth.
"The RA is working with both public and private
organizations to secure funding for this project,"
Tosha shared. "A project that helps support
the advancement of amateur sport in our
country is a desire of many organizations both
locally and nationally and we look forward to
sharing those partnerships in the near future."
During the House of Sport project, the
RA with the support of key stakeholders,
will re-capitalize 36,000 sq. ft of the
West Wing with the purpose of leasing
to roughly fifteen (15) NSOs and MSOs.
Not only will this provide a reliable
revenue stream long-term, but the RA
“This is a transformative opportunity for the
RA. This project will significantly strengthen our
position and deepen our roots as a leader in the
sports, fitness and recreation sectors not just
within the City of Ottawa but across the country.
The RA is proud to be driving such a creative
and innovative initiative,” RA CEO Tosha
Rhodenizer explains.
The integration of sport organizations
into the RA community will raise
the Association's profile, develop
opportunities to engage high profile
Proposed design for the House of Sport
in concert with these other not for profit
organizations, will benefit from the
economies of scale and efficiencies by
sharing common elements such cuttingedge technologies (internet, telephony
and network platforms), a new coffee
bar and many other resources.
The RA will capitalize on the leadership
skills and knowledge of these
industry forerunners to enhance and
augment our programs and activities.
RA members and local residents particularly children and youth - will
also benefit from the groups' mandate
to increase participation in their sports
through accessible local programs.

NEW – Major Revision to the RA Membership Model
This year, the RA embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of our membership model. This
project, which is the culmination of many months of planning, is designed to enhance
convenience, simplify renewal and streamline systems to allow us to better manage the day

Many improvements are planned with some already in place. The most noticeable change
is that RA members are no longer required to renew their RA Association Membership.
By maintaining their Club membership they will remain an Association member in good
standing.
