Box Office: 01892 678 678 THEATRE 3 TTC presents at Trinity Theatre: Whipping It Up By Steve Thompson Tue 8 - Sat 12 May 8pm 3pm matinee on Wed 9 & Sat 12 May “Westminster runs the country but the Whips run Westminster” It’s a week before Christmas and the new Tory government is facing dissent over its latest Bill. With a majority of only three, the Whips’ office is out in full force and they’ll stop at nothing to keep the strays in line. But they’re in for a long night: boy scouts are rioting in Whitehall, the PM’s golfing with the President, five Tory rebels are on the loose and the Chief Whip’s playing at Santa – could this be the beginnings of a leadership challenge? This scandalously funny comedy blows the lid off the Despatch Box and reveals the true secrets locked in the Whip’s safe. £12.50 (£11.50) | matinee £7.50 Two tickets for £17.50 opening night special offer TRINITY THEATRE CLUB Productions by Trinity’s resident amateur company eal Meal D TTC presents at Trinity Theatre: She Stoops To Conquer By Oliver Goldsmith Tue 17 - Sat 21 Jul 8pm 3pm matinee on Sat 21 and Sun 22 Jul Upper class Charles Marlow, bashful around women of quality - yet quite frisky with women of another stamp - is on his way to the Hardcastle household to court Kate, the daughter of a country squire. Hilarity ensues when a bit of tomfoolery by Hardcastle’s playboy step-son, Lumpkin, causes Marlow to mistake the home for an inn, the squire for the inn-keeper, and Kate for a serving wench. Kate quickly realizes that a saucy servant is just the role needed to woo and test her suitor in this rollicking misadventure. Whilst Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Kate’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars... One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family. £12.50 (£11.50) | matinee £7.50 Two tickets for £17.50 opening night special offer Our theatre season is sponsored by Tunbridge Wells 4 THEATRE www.trinitytheatre.net Withering Looks LipService Theatre Fri 18 May 8pm LipService - Britain’s favourite literary lunatics, are back with their cult Brontë spoof Withering Looks. The classic comic duo, Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, just couldn’t resist the urge to dust off their crinolines, wear flattering bonnets and sit at rainlashed windows in a pale and decorative manner. Don’t miss this chance to share in the silliness too! Withering Looks takes an ‘authentic’ look at the lives and works of the Brontë sisters – well, two of them actually, Anne’s just popped out for a cup of sugar. Peopled with many of the characters we know and love, Maggie and Sue move effortlessly from frock to frock coat. Withering Looks has won a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award and the Critics Award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival. £14 (£12) eal Meal D Born In The Gardens By Peter Nichols Creative Cow Fri 25 May 8pm Set in an ageing mock-Tudor house in Bristol in 1979, Maud and her stay-at-home son, Mo, pass their days happily together. He talks to the cat, plays his drums and concocts ridiculous cocktails for them both while she sits chatting away to the people on the telly. No amount of coaxing from Maud’s suave son, Hedley, and Mo’s glamorous twin sister, Queenie, will persuade the eccentric pair to lead a more normal life – even the “michael wave” is a gadget too far and part of a world neither wishes to inhabit. This is a story set when new technology, business, morality and social patterns were changing the nation’s behaviour. Master playwright, Peter Nichols (‘Privates on Parade’ & ‘A Day in the Death of Joe Egg’), reveals in his hilarious and deeply touching play that change is not always for the best and that “opening the cage door does not necessarily imply an escape..” £14 (£12) | £8 schools eal Meal D THEATRE Box Office: 01892 678 678 5 David Copperfield A new adaption by Stephan Drury Mad Dogs and Englishmen Thu 31 May 7.30pm Replete with comic, cruel and repugnant characters, Charles Dickens’ semi-autobiographical novel follows a vulnerable boy on his journey to manhood. It is a story of struggle against poverty and obscurity: a story of loss, loneliness, and the betrayal of innocence. Mad Dogs & Englishmen bring Dickens’ classic tale to the stage with a twist and a flourish in their new adaptation. Touring nationally as part of the Dickens bicentennial, this fast-paced and dynamic production is faithful to the book and captures all the hilarity and pathos of Dickens’ writing. With a cast of two, this will be an evening of pure theatre. £14 (£12) eal Meal D ‘The Dumb Waiter’ & ‘The Lover’ Harold Pinter Double Bill European Arts Company Sat 2 Jun 8pm Kent based international touring company, European Arts Co. is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a national tour of Harold Pinter’s taut black comedies The Dumb Waiter & The Lover as a double-bill. The Dumb Waiter features two hit-men waiting to do a job in a basement room, and the seemingly banal comic banter of the two gangsters was clearly an influence on Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’, as well as the recent British film ‘In Bruges’. The Lover was first presented as a TV play in 1963 and later adapted for the stage. It is a visually stunning, slightly sinister and frequently hilarious take on the idea of an open marriage. When first broadcast on television, the head of Associated Rediffusion warned that it should only be watched by ‘married couples’... The aim of the company is to present ‘quirky classics’ in an imaginative and entertaining way, frequently highlighting the comedy. £14 (12) | £8 schools eal Meal D Our theatre season is sponsored by Tunbridge Wells 6 THEATRE www.trinitytheatre.net The Complete World Of Sport (abridged) The Reduced Shakespeare Company Fri 29 Jun 8pm The “bad boys of abridgement” are back in the UK following a highly successful run in New York and a sell-out US tour. In this exclusive tour ahead of the show’s West End premiere, the entire history of athletic competition is revisited in a marathon of madness and mayhem that sees the world’s great sporting events shrunk down to theatrical size. Whether it’s the ancient cavemen or the Classical Greeks, the Romans, the Elizabethans or the modern sports media, The Complete World of Sports (abridged) brings you all the emotion, the drama and the scandal of sports… £14 (£12) Closer Rush Theatre Company Sat 14 Jul 7.30pm eal Meal D Ages 15+ Rush’s high-octane style breathes raw physicality into this brutal composition of modern-day sexual politics, set to an electrifying original soundtrack. A quartet of strangers meet, fall in love and self-destruct. As their lives inextricably collide, one thing is certain: no one is as they seem... Patrick Marber’s classic text brings the vulnerabilities of the human condition straight to the fore. A darkly humorous deconstruction of intimacy, isolation and love in an ever-connected world from an up-andcoming new local company. Edinburgh Festival Fringe preview. £6 An amateur production with kind permission from Samuel French eal Meal D You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown Picturesque Productions Sun 29 - Mon 30 Jul 3pm Join the Peanuts gang for a glorious afternoon of toe-tapping, high-octane fun and laughter for all the family! Her songs have been recorded by a veritable who’s who of popular music, including Tina Turner, George Harrison, Lisa Stansfield, Paul Carrick and Celine Dion. Her chart success has continued with a UK number one, ‘Ain’t No Doubt’, sung by Jimmy Nail. Purveying knowing, worldly, delicate but mordant pop born out of wisdom, and the desire to share it, Dore’s voice is small, pearly and oddly timeless. Her songs, an eclectic collection of genre-defying musical styles which she describes as “borrowed from folk, country, Django Reinhardt and the Beatles”, consider life in all its cheapskatery and riches. £15 (£13.50 Friends & Members only) eal Meal D Our music season is sponsored by 10 MUSIC & DANCE www.trinitytheatre.net Local & Live Sessions Sat 16 Jun 8pm The Paul Dunton Orchestra’s unique style is described as a breathtaking fusion of classical and popular music with influences such as Pink Floyd, Elbow and Rufus Wainwright through to composers such as Vaughan-Williams, Rachmaninov, John Barry and Samuel Barber.
