HISTORY OF THE TOWN
The name of Krumlov originated from two German words "Krumme Aue", which means “crooked
meadow”. The name refers to the naturally formed shape of the area where the town was established the Vltava river zigzags and forms meanders. In Latin documents it was called Crumlovia or
Crumlovium. The town was first mentioned in documents from 1253, where
Krumlov was called Chrumbonowe.
In the 9th century, the area was owned by the Czech Lords of Slavníkovec. In 995 they were all
killed by their competitors, the Lords of Premyslid, who following the principals of the colonization
granted the land (in fief) to the Lords of Vítkovec. The founder of the family, Witigo of Prčice had
right to dispose of their property, so he divided the land among his four sons - Henry of Hradec, Vitek
II. Older - the predecessor of the family of the Lords of Krumlov, Vitek III. Younger – the founder of the
Rožmberk (Rosenberg – German version of this name) family, and Vitek IV. At that time, new
possessions of the Lord of Vítkovec were established: Nové Hrady, Rožmberk, Třeboň and Krumlov,
which was a fourth castle in a row.
In 1253 the name Krumlov was first mentioned in a deed of Margrave of Moravia and Austrian and
Styrian Duke Otakar, the future King of Czech Kingdom, Premysl Otakar II. This document mentions
Vítek of Krumlov (Witigo De Chrumbenowe). The first written evidence about the town existence dates
back to 1309, when the Deed of Henry I. from Rožmberk (Rosenberg) was issued.
In 1302 the Krumlov wing of Vítkovec family died out and their possessions were transferred to the
Lords of Rožmberk, who contributed to the most to the town prosperity (1302 - 1602). Krumlov
became the seat of their dominion. Its position was right at the crossroads of Czech, Austrian,
Bavarian and Northern Italian regional contacts and trade. This contributed to the town and castle
appearance, especially the Italian Renaissance period influenced the town’s architecture the most.
In 1601, Petr Vok of Rožmberk, the last member of the family, had to sell Krumlov to the Emperor
Rudolf II. Habsburg, because his family was heavily indebted.
The Thirty Years´ War brought the city new nobility. In 1622, the Emperor Ferdinand II of Habsburg
vested the town to the Styrian family of Eggenberg in return for their financial support during the war.
At the end of 17th century, during the reign Eggenbergs, the castle Baroque theater was built and the
castle garden rebuilt. The family of Eggenbergs died out at the beginning of the 18th century and in
1719 their heirs the Schwarzenbergs came to Krumlov. At the times of Schwarzenbergs, Cesky
Krumlov gained its Baroque appearance. Since the start of the 19th century, when the town walls
including the town guard towers were demolished, the old town has not changed very much till
nowadays and remained its historic character.
Since the mid 1960's, special care has been devoted to the preservation of the historical merits of
Cesky Krumlov (since 1963 protected by National Trust); the town was included in 1992 on to
UNESCO's List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

the Vltava river valley at the foothills of the Blanský Forest Nature Reserve.

TIME DIFFERENCES: The Czech Republic follows Central European Time (CET). During Daylight
Saving Time (late Mar-late Sept), the clocks are put ahead one hour.
Currency:
The official currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech crown (internationally recognized as CZK).
One crown is divided into 100 hellers (h), though the smallest denomination of coin is CZK 1 coin.
Generally, when making payments in the Czech Republic, cash or credit cards are accepted. Most f
retail stores in Cesky Krumlov city center accept payments in EUR. It is up to discretion of a retailer to
accept Euros or not. Foreign currencies can be exchanged in many exchange offices available in the

WHAT IS NEW FOR 2010 TO 2012
To make Cesky Krumlov even more attractive for visitors, there are few projects on to make a choice
of places of interests even grater. For coming years, visitors may look forward to see newly
reconstructed historic sights, museums and more importantly to gain unforgettable experiences.
Castle Museum
The foundation-stone of the Castle Museum was officially placed on July 31, 2009. The Castle
Museum will be opened up in the area known as the Little Castle (Hradek), the Palace, which is
located at the IInd castle courtyard. This project with a budget around 40 million of CZK crowns aims
to revitalize the Little Castle area. In the splendid interiors of the Little Castle, rare artifacts kept in the
castle depository will be presented. Through the museum exhibits, the most important events referring
to the House of Rožmberk, Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg, the former owners of Krumlov castle, will
be introduced. The Castle Museum will not only be an excellent historic sight but also a place of rest
and education.
The ground floor of the Castle Museum will accommodate coffee shop, bookstore, souvenir shop,
seminar room and the Visitor Centre. First two rooms of the museum will be devoted to the castle
history, the other rooms will present the office and private rooms of the director of the former
Schwarzenberg dominion and religion related exhibits sourced from the castle depository. The
museum will also present Schwarzenberg Grenadiers´ Guard, the mint, armory and a cinematograph
with a projection of old Schwarzenberg films dating to the start of the 20th century and more…
The opening of the Castle Museum is planned for the start of 2011. It will be open all year
round.
Restoration of Scenic Walkway Mountain Gardens
The project aims to re-access scenic routes, which once led to the slope between the castle and the
Fishermen Street (Rybarska ulice). The scenic walkway used to start under the aqua duct bridge and
climbed diagonally up the southern slope of the castle ending below the gatehouse building. It
continued under the garden terraces towards one of the bastions in Mining Street (Dulni ulice). Along
the walkway, there used to be pavilions and scenic terraces offering unique views of the city and
castle. Scenic walkway ended at the so-called Paraplíčko, which was a structure located on the top of
the stone tower covered by a conical roof. The entire walkway including pavements, bridges and
pavilions will be re-established within the next two years.
Reconstruction of Egon Schiele´s Summer House
Egon Schiele lived in this summer house in 1911. About this period of his short life, he reached its own
artistic style, which is typical for him. The garden house has three rooms: basement, first floor and
attic. Originally it served only as a summer house. In the 19th century, there were terraces and small
vegetable gardens around, an orchard, meadow and two farms. The Cesky Krumlov town and Egon
Schiele Art Center plan to open up a public alternative art studio and exhibition in 2012.
Revitalization of the Jewish synagogue
The first written record of a small number of Jewish families living in the area goes back to the turn of
the 14th century. From the 17th till 19th century only no more than three Jewish families were allowed
to live in the town. Greater opportunities for Jewish population aroused during so called „emancipation
of the Jews", during which in 1855 a religious association was created and twenty years later an
individual community was formed, which eventually built the synagogue. Services were held here till
the Sudetenland was occupied by the Germans in 1938. The Nazis destroyed the interior of the
synagogue and Krumlov Jews sent to their deaths in concentration camps. At the end of the war it was
used for worships by the U.S. Army soldiers who liberated Krumlov. After, the Czechoslovak Hussite
Church used the synagogue. Since 1968, it served many years as a warehouse. Unique Baroque
backdrops of the Castle Baroque Theater were stored here at that time.
The project of the synagogue revitalization aims to establish a permanent exhibition including a space
which would be used for concerts and special events. It should also meet the expectations and needs
of the Jewish community.

But it should also serve the needs of the Jewish community. Among other things, there will be a
permanent exhibition on the history of the Jewish community in the region since the earliest references
to the disappearance of the Jewish community. The site will be opened in 2011 / 2012.
The Revitalization of Monasteries in Cesky Krumlov
This is an additional project to take place in coming years.
Its main objective is to repair and restore the life in the former monastery of the Poor Clare Sisters and
Minoritas, which has been abandoned for many years. In future, the town residents as well as visitors
can look forward to find Arts and Crafts workshops, where old crafts traditions will be shared. Part of
the monastery will be converted into the Center of Baroque Arts focusing on teaching Baroque
singing, dancing and music. Religious architecture and medieval musical instruments will be presented
in the museum of Medieval Monastery.

EVENTS, HIGHLIGHTS
Český Krumlov – a town of art and culture
Art exhibitions, museums and galleries, music and theatre festivals – not only this make the unique
atmosphere of lively, cosmopolitan town of Český Krumlov.
The exhibition of original document issued by Henry I. of Rožmberk will be an important event,
following the celebrations of the 700 years existence of Cesky Krumlov town. This original document is
the first one ever to evidences Cesky Krumlov as the town. In addition, there will be more original
documents, chronicles and maps to see.
The top event of 2010 will undoubtedly be Cesky Krumlov International Music Festival, which comes
up with the world-famous tenor José Cura, the tunes of famous Broadway musicals plus Flamenco
rhythms will add flavor to the festival’s program. Besides this festival, visitors may look forward to other
music festivals as Chamber Music, Medieval Music as well as Jazz Festivals. Shakespearean drama,
Macbeth or Mozart's famous opera Don Giovanni will be performed at the revolving auditorium theatre
in the castle garden. Also the city festivals held throughout the year are a promise of experiences.

The old tradition of Shrove Tuesday folk festivals has been revived along with its typical Carnival
featuring a procession of colourful masks, street plays, conjurers, and musicians, as well as an
abundant feast and dancing because Shrovetide marks the end of the festive season and the
beginning of Lent.

The fairytale ambience of the medieval town combines with the magic of May Day Eve to set the stage
for the celebration of the Month of Love. During the festive evening, you can enjoy a whirl of witches,
the building of a maypole, live music, and a lantern procession, while on May Day you can visit
exhibitions and expositions free of charge within the Museum and Gallery Open Day, which will offer a
number of new and interesting displays and events.
Rallye Český Krumlov

The tradition of the car race, which belongs among the top motor events in the country, began in 1971.
The race track leads both contestants and spectators to interesting places of the region that otherwise
remain concealed from many visitors. The start of the race as well as the winners' ceremony taking
place in the vicinity of the historical centre are always a welcome spectacle among youths keen on
roaring engines, and other fans.

The famous Lords of Rožmberk (Rosenberg) who once owned the dominion are back! The spirit of the
Renaissance age is brought back to life for three days with the hubbub of jousts, craft fairs, medieval
music, street plays, and fencing duels to culminate with the highlight of the festival – a spectacular
procession in historical costumes featuring knights on horseback and many notables linked with the
history of the town. No matter what the age or the expectations of the visitors are, all will certainly
enjoy themselves.

With summer comes a music festival with the oldest tradition in town. Due to being favoured by
renowned domestic and international musicians, the once modest local event has gradually grown into

Jazzky Krumlov Festival

It's not only classical music that resounds through this picturesque medieval town. The local acoustics
favour other music genres as well. This year-round series of concerts of jazz and alternative music
culminates in early September with a traditional weekend festival, during which big-time domestic and
international names of these music genres perform at highly untraditional places.
A Day with a Handicap - A Day without Barriers in Český Krumlov
A visit to the historical town centre: A pleasant walk for some and for others, a challenge full of
impassable barriers. On this day, however, Český Krumlov is also open to all handicapped visitors. All
stairs, whether at the castle or at its museums and galleries, seem to vanish from the town. Visually
impaired visitors can “look” at house facades and the more adventurous will definitely enjoy a ride
down the river on a flatboat or a raft. Moreover, a fair with products from protected workshops and an
abundant cultural programme will certainly enrich this day full of unforgettable experiences.
European Heritage Days (EHD)
European Heritage Days render a unique and one-of-a-kind opportunity to see usually inaccessible
places of major historical monuments and to become familiar with the processes involved in their
conservation and restoration. In accompanying expert lectures, visitors may learn many interesting
facts relating to construction history and current findings.
Saint Wenceslas Celebrations
In addition to being the patron saint of the lands of Bohemia, Saint Wenceslas is the patron saint of
brewers and winemakers, which is commemorated by the traditional autumn festivities offering a
cultural as well as a rich gourmet experience. The pleasant atmosphere of the autumn festivities is
augmented by the festival of folk ensembles and the Saint Wenceslas Fair. The cherry on top is
certainly the unforgettable evening excursion to the town’s museums and galleries, garnished with an
impressive accompanying programme.

After centuries, the timeless works of Baroque artists – architects and music composers – meet once
again to create a one-of-a-kind cultural event. The town’s authentic historical premises resound with
the tones of contemporary music: Sacral music echoes through the monastery church and the unique
Baroque Castle Theatre becomes a stage for operas.

Since 1997, Český Krumlov has become one of the stops of this film festival, designated for all who
care about the environment in which they live, and how they live. The liaison of the festival with the
historical town on the Vltava is by no means accidental: Ecofilm currently focuses also on culture and
the issue of monument conservation.
Krumlov River Marathon

The wide variety of activities associated with Český Krumlov also features major sports competitions,
one of which certainly is the river marathon, with the largest number of contestants in the Czech
Republic. Every year, the river marathon attracts hundreds of keen watermen, ranging from strict
amateurs to top-class international athletes. The river marathon weekend offers an abundant
accompanying programme for the general public and does not forget our youngest visitors, too.

The remarkably preserved mansion of what was once the Rožmberk (Rosenberg) dominion is in itself
such a picturesque coulisse that it has inevitably inspired the foundation of a theatre festival that will
undoubtedly satisfy all those keen on other than classical thespian forms, i.e. marionettes, improvised
stages and street or carnival performances.
Advent and Christmas in Českém Krumlově

When winter comes, Český Krumlov shows a completely different face. A face filled with peace and
poetry. The Advent season is a time of cheerful gatherings, starting with the lighting of the Christmas
tree, carols, treats given to children on St. Nicholas' Eve and letters written by children to Baby Jesus.
The festive time before Christmas culminates with a living Nativity scene that tells the biblical story
through singing, dancing and plentiful music accompaniment.
On Advent weekends visitors can enjoy the old Bohemian Christmas fair offering punch and traditional
Christmas cookies, the delicious scent of which spreads throughout the town each day and evokes a
festive feeling in everyone. Families with children can enjoy themselves on Christmas Eve at a
gathering in the first castle courtyard and celebrate Christmas with the Krumlov bears. Celebrations
welcoming the New Year in Český Krumlov also offer one-of–a-kind magical and poetic moments.

Český Krumlov State Castle with its architectural standard, cultural tradition, and expanse ranks
among the most important historic sights in the central European region. Originally Gothic castle from
13th century was enlarged in 14th century and it was rebuit in the Renaissance style in 16th century.
In 17th and 18th centuries the castle was modified in the Baroque and the Rococo style.After the
castle tour, but also after the visitor sees the garden and the whole area of the castle he or she can
feel like in the Middle Ages when the nobility walked through the corridors.

Castle Lapidarium in Český Krumlov
The main cellar area, originally unified, is 48 m long and 8.5 meters high, while the wagon vault of the
cellar is 4.6 m high at its peak. The spaces have been newly arranged and are now used as a

Wenceslas Cellars
The extensive cellar area under IVth Courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle occupies the entire ground
plan of the courtyard as well as the frame of Upper Castle wings. Presently this unique area under the
patronage of the Czech Ceramics Design Agency is used for exhibitions of contemporary Czech and
foreign artists. /A part of exhibition of the Czech Ceramics Design Agency is located in the rooms of

Two main dominants define the skyline of the Český Krumlov town. The castle tower symbolizes the
secular ruling power and the region of its influence; the church tower of St. Vitus then personifies the
might of the holy Christendom which from medieval times functioned both as a counterpart and
complement of the wordly powers. The church shares with the castle the promontory created by the
river Vltava, thus creating an impressive architectural feature that characterizes the town.
The height of the side colonnades approximates that of the main hall, a feature which classifies the
St. Vitus church as a church of the hall type. The east to west length of the church is 44 meters, ie.
125 feet. It is about 20 m wide and 20 m high.

The construction of the Monastery started after its foundation, exactly in the mid-14th century. The
temple Body of Christ arose probably as soon as in the 14th century, but the cloister of the monks
was apparently finished only one and a half century later, toward the end of the 15th century. The St.
Wolfgang Chapel was consecrated in 1491. It means that since the oldest building phase, late Gothic
construction has predominated.

Built in Nouveau-Romanesque style in 1909 by the local Jewish community, the Cesky Krumlov
Synagogue features an eight-sided tower with Torah-shaped windows. In 1945 it was used as an nondenominational Christian church for the American soldiers. A symbol of the U.S. Army preserved on a
wall of the prayer hall serves as a reminder of this. From 1945 - 1968 the synagogue was used by the
Czechoslovakian Hussite Church. The building is currently not used.

Welcome in the Museum Fotoatelier Seidel! In unique place where tradition of photography sprang up
in the 19th century, in place where Time stood still. The Josef and Frantisek Seidels' studio exposition
will surprise by its authenticity, its wealth of unique period images, post-cards and glass-plate
negatives, and the well-preserved, functioning cameras, enlargers and darkroom equipment. This
outstanding collection is enhanced even further by Seidel's personal notes, diaries, cutomer records,
and the original furniture and fixtures in the house.
Tour of the museum
The tours take place every hour except 12:00 AM. Within the tour you will see many things not only
from a world of photogrphy but also from living at czech-austrian-german borderland at the turn of
19th and 20th century and in the 1st half of 20th century. The house with the photo studio itself is an
architectural gem. The reception room, private bedroom and a small living room of the last inhabitants
of the house, the married couple of Marie and František Seidel. Authentic, carefully restored,
furniture, lab and a room for daylight photo copying, various technical equipments like a paper
scissors, a photo press, a hand-oprated printer, magnifiers, copiers and polishing machines, handoperated printer to print the back sides of photografphs... That all and many more waits for you in the
Museum Fotoatelier Seidel.

The tradition of brewing beer in Český Krumlov goes back to the very beginnings of the town. The first
written documentation is a deed from the reeve Michal from 1336. The increasing rate of beer
consumption seemed to be reason enough to utilize the former estates of Anna of Roggendorf,
mother of Wilhelm and Peter Wok von Rosenberg (Wilhelm von Rosenberg, Petr Wok von
Rosenberg), for a new brewery. The estates, which since 1594 had been used for the Rožmberk
armoury, were reconstructed from 1625-30 by townsman Václav Vlach into the new buildings of
today's brewery. The new owner of Krumlov's castle and dominion, Johann Ulriich von Eggenberg,
heralded the brewery into operation in 1630. The Czech Eggenberg property was inherited by the
Schwarzenberg family in 1719, which meant a very significant age for the history of the brewery in
that it was expanded to the form which we know today.

The Egon Schiele Art Centrum owes its foundation in 1992/93 to the private initiative of three
individuals who recognized the unique atmosphere after the fall of the Iron Curtain between the
Eastern and Western Europe and have significantly contributed to the idea of creation of an
international art center in one of Europe's loveliest Renaissance towns. The Egon Schiele Art
Centrum houses an exhibition documenting the life and work of Egon Schiele as well as a permanent
exhibition of his works. In addition, various rotating exhibits of both classical 20th century and
contemporary art take place in the Centrum covering an area of 3000 sq.m. Another part of the
museum has been developed into large art studios for long-term residing young artists coming from
both Eastern and Western Europe. Art studios are leased on a 10-year basis to Ministries of Culture
or various national art institutions. A writers' suite is also available. The Museum also houses a wellstocked Museum shop and a traditional café serving assorted Czech specialties and catering to both
artists and art lovers alike. Since its opening in 1993, the Egon Schiele Art Centrum has become an

Life and Work of Egon Schiele
Since the opening of the Egon Schiele Art Center in 1993, this famous artist has returned to reside

furniture, posthumous mask and the only existing Schiele sculpture.

This is the only existing Art Agency in the Czech Republic committed to a permanent presentation
of ceramic artworks by professional Czech and Moravan artist. These artworks are presented on joint
exhibitons (salons), prestigious exhibitions of selected artists‘ work and solo exhibitions. The Agency
organizes annual international ceramic artworks exhibitions in Český Krumlov, in co-operation
with the State Castle and Chateau Český Krumlov and the Ministry of Culture of he Czech Republic.

Fairy Tale House in Český Krumlov - Puppet Cabinet of the National Museum - The puppets have
been borrowed from the Theatre Department of the National Museum and from the Náprstek Museum
of Asian, African and American Cultures in Prague.
Museum for childern of any age
The exhibition presents over 200 historical puppets arranged into scenes for you to see, a mechanical
model of village fair including a Ferris wheel, which takes up one whole room, an original of a
mechanical theater from 1815 and you can also visit the attic showing a puppeteer´s home. The
puppets have been borrowed from the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures in

This historical building, formerly the church of St Jobst, contains an exhibition of old Czech
marionettes and complete puppet theatres including stage designs and curtains from the latter half of

Our exihibiton
The visitors of the exhibition have a unique possibility to see the building history of a medieval town
whose gradual changes were most remarkable made by the choice of different architectonical details
in the various periods of time. The exhibited materials are presented in a non traditional form.
The information boards and showcases were made by assembling of used old doors and window
panes. Those visitors who want to see the architectonical details on the real buildings can study the
thematic information boards where the actual constructions are drawn in /for example 20 most
interesting roof frames, doors, portals, window frames, timber ceilings, facades, whole interiors etc./

wax museum was opened in May of 2001. Visitors to the museum can step into history throughout an

area over 600 m large. The cellars offer a chance to admire the art of Medieval craftsmen, breathe
the atmosphere of an alchemist's kitchen and an old tavern, and visit the courts and advisors of the
Bohe-mian Kings and Emperors such as Charles IV, Rudolf II, and Franz Josef.

Rožmberk Castle was founded in the first half of 13th century by a member of the powerful Witigonen
family, Vok from Prčice who later called himself after this castle Wok from Rosenberg. Very soon in
the settlement round the castle a serfdom townlet arose. The castle became the administrative and
economic centre of the manor. The castle was named after the five petal rose that its founder had in
his coat-of-arms. The German name Rosenberg (Rose castle) was Czechicized on the name
Rožmberk. The Rožmberk family changed the castle into a beautiful Renaissance residence. The
castle was interesting even later thanks to the Buquoy family who was holding the castle from the first
half of 17th century till the year 1945.

The monastery was founded by Wok von Rosenberg in 1259. He called the Cistercians from
Wilhering in Austria to there. On a wish of the founder the monastery became the monastery of the
family. Together ten generations of the family were buried there. Monastery´s area is located on a rise
above the west bank of the Vltava river was preserved. The last reconstruction and rebuilding were
made in 1830 - 1862, then at the time of abbot Leopold Wackarž who essentially reconstructed the
church in the Neo-Gothic style and added the thin tower to it. Other constructional change is dated
1904. Because the monastery is situated on a quite isolated place it was secured against the wars
and so it remained basically untouched.

The Cistercian community lives in the monastery today. They slowly reconstruct the whole building. It
is possible to visit the church, the chapter hall, the library and the picture gallery within the historical

According to the Baroque monastery chroniclers Přemysl Otakar II founded Zlatá Koruna to thank God
for blessing him in his victory over the much stronger Hungarian king Béla IV in the battle
of Kressenbrunn.
Although some fragmentary news taken from the sources of that time as well as from later ones
correspond with this version, it was not the main reason why the monastery was founded. The
Cistercians of the most significant Austrian abbey in Heiligenkreutz were called by Přemysl Otakar II to

the Zlatá Koruna monastery in 1263 for his support against power of the Witigonen who built a
powerful dominion in South Bohemia. The former abbey in Zlatá Koruna is the best preserved
Cistercian monastery in Bohemia. The area of the monastery was in 1995 announced as the national
cultural treasure.

Dívčí Kámen castle is one of the castles in Bohemia of which the foundation charter was preserved.
Four sons of Peter I. von Rosenberg, Petr, Jošt, Oldřich and Jan, decided to build this castle. The
emperor Karel IV gave them on July 1, 1349 permission to "build in the Czech Kingdom the castle
called in the Czech language Dívčí Kámen and make its walls, moats, towers and other fences
strong". Today Dívčí Kámen castle with its 210 metres of length and 45 metres of width is one of the
largest castle ruins in Bohemia. Parts of the walls of the upper and lower castle and also parts of the
castle fortification were preserved. Accessibility: The ruins of the Dívčí Kámen castle are located near
the village Třísov, 9 km from Český Krumlov. The village can be reached by a bus or a train and from
there follow the red marked tourist trail. You can also reach the ruins from Holubov following the
yellow marked tourist trail.

From the time the castle was established by Vítek z Krumlova (1220 - 1272) in the 13th century, it
performed the function of a fortress and an administrative centre of the estates that were part of the
growing dominion of the members of the Witigonen family. Their estates were spread on the both
sides of today's border between the Czech Republic and Austria. Accessibility: Vítkův hrádek is
located in the Czech-Austrian bored area about 0.5 km from the Svatý Tomáš settlement on top of the
Vítkův kámen mountain. You can reach Svatý Tomáš either from the Přední Výtoň village or by the
ferry across the Frýdava river from Frymburk .

Cable railway Krasetín - Kleť
The Kleť mountain can also be reached by a seated cable railway starting in the Krasetín station near
the village of Holoubov. The cable railway gets you effortlessly to the top of the mountain and lets you
enjoy the beauty of the Blanský Forest. The cable car has been in operation since 1 July 1961 and
the construction took 2 years to complete. The total length of the track is 1792 meters and total incline

The thought of connecting the Vltava river with the Dunaj river, the flow of two rivers which lead
into different seas, came about in the middle of the 14th century, during the reign of emperor Karel IV.
The actualisation of this project only came towards the 18th century.
For this reason the Schwarzenberg canal was built, one of the most unusual water constructions of its
time. The new water way enabled the floating of timber from the Šumava region to its place of
transport in Vienna, which made possible to utilisation the natural rich resources of Šumava forests
which were up to then inaccessible.

The main reason for the building of the railway from Linz to České Budějovice was the transport of
salt from Salzburg to Bohemia. The salt was transported from long ago on the Travna and Dunaj
rivers to Linz, where it was transferred to teams of horses, to take it across the Šumava ridges to

This small museum was founded thanks to the Village Authority in Bujanov, in cooperation with the
Society for the Maintenace of the Horse-drawn Railway, and the South Bohemian Museum in České

Budějovice. In the Bujanov Museum of Horse-drawn Railway it is possible to find information about
the history of this unique monument, which was founded in the first half of the 19th century. It was the
first of its kind in Europe, and it connected Linz and České Budějovice. In the museum there are also
documents concerning buildings in the Český Krumlov district which have been preseved till today.

Museum of horse-drawn railway in Bujanov was given two material exhibits in 1998. It is a maquette
of former horse-drawn railway station in Bujanov, which is executed in a shape as it used to be in the
era of its activity. Then it is a replica of rail top of horse-drawn railway, its length is approximately 25
m. The original stone stools, which were found during the reconstruction works of railway track in
Bujanov, were used during the building, and it was in October 98.

To make Cesky Krumlov accessible also to those, who are limited by their disabilities, we have
prepared a city guide for disabled people. This guide shows wheelchair accessibility of the selected
sites with the necessary contacts and information about their accessibility and other services. This
guide was specifically designed for people with limited mobility and orientation. It was produced from
the perspective of a person on a mechanical wheelchair. Although any of Krumlov streets and alleys
is worthy to see, we have selected not only the most popular routes, but also the off – main routes
streets are included.
Parking - Within the town parking lots, there are parking spaces assigned to vehicles carrying people
using wheelchairs. All parking places for disabled are well marked.
Pedestrian area - if there is a need to enter the old town by car transporting a disabled person,
providing the vehicle is properly marked with a wheelchair symbol, the car is allowed enter the city
centre.
Public transportation - Unfortunately, bus stops are not suitable for persons using wheelchairs
therefore using public transport services in the town is rather difficult. We recommend to use a car or
to travel while accompanied by an assistant.

Cesky Krumlov - a town surrounded by unspoiled nature - Hilly countryside is perfect for hiking,
biking, horseback riding, golfing, rafting or canoeing down the Vltava river or in the nearby holiday

Town park
Town park with a total area of approximately 2.5 hectares is located in the center of town, in the
meander of the Vltava River, on its left bank. Nowadays, the park is now used for recreation. Sporting
area and toilets are provided.
Jesuits garden
Jesuits garden is located at the top of Horni Street opposite the Rose Hotel. In 2004, after more than
two centuries, the garden was reconstructed and opened to public. It is a unique view point within the
old town as well as ideal place for relaxation.
Castle garden
The Baroque garden founded in 17th century is an integral part of the castle complex. It is situated on
a hill slope adjacent to the southwest area of the castle buildings on the Vth castle courtyard. Thanks
to a great care of the castle administrators, the garden brings delight to all those who apart from
touring the castle allow some time to visit castle garden and enjoy the labyrinth of colorful flower beds
under ancient trees while walking towards the pond at the very end of the garden.
Playground
This modern playground, often called „garden of fun" is located close to the town center in Hradebni
Street. It comprises mainly of rods and rope elements and has two sections. First one is for smaller
children with colored attractions and the other for older children with more advanced attractions. The
playground is very close to the Vltava river so even in hot summer months it gets fresh breeze coming
from the river.

The Český Krumlo golf course is a course of two different nine-hole styles: the first one is quite
forgiving, giving the golfer an opportunity to take a deep breath and admire the South Bohemian
landscape and enjoy the friendly greens. The other nine holes will require your full focus all the time.
At our golf course, the players need not play a 250-meter long first shot; this is a course built for
precise green shots and with higher-handicap golfers in mind as well. The golf course has been built
between 2004 and 2008 in 2 stages: the first nine holes have been opened on 4 September 2006 and
the other nine on 30 August 2008. The order of the holes of these two styles is mixed together and so
you will come across two distinct green types across our golf course. All holes are fully irrigated
(teeing areas, fairways and greens). There are yellow and red teeing areas along with golden and
green ones for the youngest golfers. In the near future we plan prolonging some of the holes and also
finishing the construction of the clubhouse near hole no. 1.
Tournaments
For a list of upcoming tournaments, please refer to our web pages. Club tournaments usually start at
10 am and available tee-times for fee players are only approximate. The club reception (telephone
606754570) will have more detailed information on the day of the tournament about first available
slots after the commencement of the tournament.

Golf Classes: Get to Know Golf without Handicap Exam
This class is suitable for beginners who either live in the area or are on vacation here and want to
start playing golf. The class is tailor made according to the player's schedule and also skills and
knowledge that the player already has about golf. The class starts with a training plan prepared by our
trainer that includes both individual practice and lessons with the trainer. Driving range balls and club
rental during individual practice are subject to standard fees according to the Golf Course ČK price
list. Upon the completion of the class, the player may also apply for a handicap exam (fee of 2000
CZK). The classes include: 10 hours on the driving range (1 hour = 50 minutes), 5 hours of training on
the course (game + course management), club and ball rental. The classes are run by our golf club
trainers. The classes are either for individuals or small groups (subject to prior agreement with the
trainer), such as families. Maximum number of participants is 3 persons.

This multi-day class is suitable for players living in the area or spending their holiday here who
already know the basics of golf (for example from taking part in golf academies) and want to start
playing golf. The class is tailor made according to the player's schedule and also skills and knowledge
that the player already has about golf. The class begins with a training plan compiled by our trainer.
The plan includes both individual practice and lessons with the trainer.
4-DAY CLASS: ADVANCED PLAYERS OR BEGINNERS

Family Course
Our golf course is also open to the youngest players! Starting from this season, there will be 4
different tee positions on each hole. This makes it possible for the entire family to enjoy a round of
golf: children, beginners and advanced golfers. The total course length is shortened to less than 2000
meters for children (3491 meters from golf marks). So the children can join the adults without delaying
the game and compete as equal players as well. Once the children grow up, they can move to more
difficult tee positions. Their mothers playing from red positions will be their firs opponents. We hope
your children will enjoy playing on our course. We are also ready to open a special children's category
within tournaments without disrupting the tournament schedule.

We operate quad trips in the Šumava region and around Český Krumlov. The are various routes

points of interest. Quads can be delivered to client's location of choice. Included in the rental price
are: fuel, protective gear (helmet, gloves, glasses), rubber overalls and heated vests in bad weather.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION - MANUAL FOR TOUR BUS DRIVERS
Basic Information
- It is forbidden to park your tour bus in the town of Ceský Krumlov except in specially-marked parking
areas.
- The parking system for tour buses is marked in the following way: The long-term parking area for tour
buses is marked, P-BUS and the bus stop for quick pick up or drop off of passengers is marked, BUSSTOP.
- As you enter the town from any direction, signs will guide you to the P-BUS long-term parking area.
The quick pick up or drop off point for passengers is marked, BUS-STOP. Please refer to the map
below.
A reminder to tour operators and drivers:
- Immediately upon entering or exiting the town, it is recommended to drop off or pick up your
passengers at the BUS-STOP.
- The P-BUS parking area is recommended only for long-term parking of empty tour buses. It is not
intended for use as a meeting point for large groups.
BUS-STOP terminals
The first BUS STOP terminal is located on Chvalšinská Street, a comfortable 10-minute walk from the
town centre.
- The bus is allowed to stop at the BUS STOP terminal for a maximum of 30 minutes
- The nearest free, public, barrier-free WC is located in Parking Lot P1 (Jelení zahrada), about 250
metres towards the town and castle. Opening hours are daily from 7.00 – 20.00.
The second BUS STOP terminal is located at the bus station, a comfortable 10-minute walk from the
town centre.
- The bus is allowed to stop at the BUS STOP terminal for a maximum of 20 minutes
- The nearest public paid WC is located in the service building at the bus station about 100 metres far.
