Due to a great deal of hard work and commitment during 2009 by athletes, coaches, parents and committee
members as well as a continued increase in membership, 2010 promises to be an exciting season for Colwyn Bay
Athletics Club, as it is now poised to regain its position as one of the most successful of clubs within Welsh Athletics.
Last year represented a resurgence in the club with it redeveloping its strong tradition by finishing fourth in Division two of the
U.K. National Young Athletes League at the first attempt as well as performing very well in the Cheshire League and the Welsh
Junior League.
The strong performances throughout the year resulted in TWENTY FIVE athletes achieving both U.K. And Welsh rankings
which included two athletes achieving top ten places in the U.K. rankings as well as three athletes becoming National
Champions in their respective age groups and events.
The six million pounds investment in the Eirias Park Stadium with facilities
due to be improved to Olympic training standards is also expected to
improve the athletes’ performance and is another exciting development in
terms of raising the profile and overall standing of Colwyn Bay Athletic
Club within the world of athletics.
With regard to the previously highlighted achievements, the increase in
membership, alongside a period of hard winter training by athletes,
expectations are high in terms of building upon the previous developments,
with all concerned within the club looking forward to the season ahead with
great anticipation and the expectation of considerable success.

Club Secures Funding!
The Whales have not only experienced success with swimmers and volunteers again in
the last year but they have also secured funding for development through Community
Chest which is funded by The Sports Council for Wales AND through The Mars Refuel
Fund. This funding will allow the club to upskill more club volunteers to become trained
swimming teachers which will have another positive impact on the sessions.
The club’s hard working committee has again come up trumps and should be recognised for this and all of their efforts, WELL DONE!

Volunteers Recognised!
Conwy Whales Swimming Club for children with disabilities is very fortunate to have 30 dedicated volunteers. At our end of season fun
session and buffet, the Mayor of Colwyn Bay gave out certificates to some of our pool helpers for their valued contribution to the club.
They are pictured below from left to right: Dianne Beales, Rae Ayling (hiding) Martika Mann, Rebeca Edwards, Bethan King, Sian Walker (on behalf of her sister Lowri Walker),
Aled Hughes, Rebecca Ward, Liz Day, Rob Patterson and Jessica Elsmore. In addition the following were also awarded with certificates
but unable to attend the buffet: Vanessa Brooks, Glenda Evans, Joshua Evans, Megan Pownall, Bethan Sams and Neil Williams.
Without the help of our volunteers the Club could not exist or offer the opportunities to children with disabilities to learn to swim in a
safe, well-supported environment.
The Club Committee would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers and to say how much their efforts are appreciated.

18th Annual North Wales Road Runners Club
10k m Nick Bee r R a ce • 7th Fe b 2010
This year’s race was a massive success attracting over 600
runners from across the UK.
The race was held in good weather with large crowds on the Llandudno promenade.
The event is held in memory of Nick Beer who was a member of the North Wales Road
Runners Club. Electronic chip timing was used for the first time, which enabled all
competitors to be monitored crossing the start and finish, with instant and accurate results.
The race up to 4km was very close, with Jason Dunkerley of East Cheshire Harriers and
Matthew Roberts of Eryri Harriers fighting for the lead, Jason then pulled away going
down the Great Orme and won by 14 seconds in a time of 33 mins 22 secs, with
Brendon Rothery of Eryri Harriers coming third. The female race was won in a time of
38mins 3 seconds by Jennifer Clague from Liverpool Harriers beating Sarah Ridgeway
of Eryri Harriers by 31 seconds, with Carmen Anthony coming third.
Many local clubs competed in the event with Eryri Harriers entering
33 runners. The men’s team award went to Eryri Harriers and the ladies
team winners were Liverpool Harriers.
This is a great advert for what can be done to attract visitors to the area,
and the race has become one of the largest events of its kind in
North Wales. The sponsors were delighted with the record entries and
the success. The awards were presented by John Hatton, Race Director
of North Wales Road Runners Club, the host club. John would like to
thank all the club members and helpers from local running clubs plus
volunteers who helped on the day.

CONWY SCHOOLS FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION
The under 12 football team have won the North Wales Group Competition of the WSFA Trophy.
The team have now been invited to play in the Semi-final of the National Competition to be
played in Cardiff on Saturday 27th March 2010.
This is a first for Conwy at this age group, (played 6, won 5, lost 1) and leads on from last year’s
success in taking the u11’s to the finals of the Tom Yoeman.
On another positive note the new crop of u11’s have come 2nd
in the league and again have qualified for the finals of the
Tom Yoeman, under the new supervision of Mark Hughes,
so a massive well done to those boys!

University and Mold Judo Clubs as well as attending National squad Training in Cardiff.
Tom says “My ambition is to represent Wales in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow. This year my goals are firstly to gain Welsh selection for the European Cadet

European Cadet Championships.
Secondly I wish to win a medal in Belgium in April when I compete in the Lommel
International Championships, and also medal in some Junior (under 20 years) events.”

A unique new scheme that has been devised to support local sports clubs in a voluntary capacity.
Our local clubs need as much support as they can get to develop and thrive, therefore Sporting Heroes has been established to
engage young people in volunteering for their local sports club. Each Sporting Hero will be supported and rewarded for their
participation in the scheme. The scheme allows participants to select a preferred volunteer role and club in which to support
through our web pages. If you would like to become a Sporting Hero or would like further information please email:
[email protected] or visit our web pages www.sportconwy.org.uk/sportingheroes to register your interest.
London 2012 is fast approaching and this means there will be more people taking part in sport than ever before, this brings
challenges to local sports clubs who may not have the capacity or assistance to deal with this influx of participants.
Thats why we need sporting heroes - sporting heroes will volunteer their time to local sports clubs and assist where necessary
whether coaching, assistant coaching, umpiring,
organising or just helping out. These sporting
heroes will help to create a volunteer legacy
that will be the backbone of local clubs for years
to come. Creating this volunteer infrastructure
will allow local clubs and participants to flourish
and develop to higher standards in light of 2012.
