The
perfect
playground...
Muskoka’s ready to explore
There’s simply no end of choice when it comes to finding fun things to do or wonderful places to stay when visiting
Muskoka. Boasting more than 80 resorts – everything from luxury all-inclusive hotels, family-run lodges, quaint inns,
historic B&Bs and rustic cottage resorts – Muskoka’s got something for everyone. Those looking for back to nature
experience are well catered to, with many parks and facilities available to set up camp.
The list of things to do once you arrive in magnificent Muskoka is equally long. Boaters will want to explore the mile-aftermile of shorelines along the region’s magnificent lakes, big and small. Take your pick on how best to do it: area marinas and
resorts offer rentals of everything from powerboats to canoes and kayaks, as well as winter equipment such as snowmobiles
and snowshoes, and boat ramps and beaches are plentiful if you’re bringing your own vessel.
Exploring Mother Nature’s rich abundance on foot is another wonderful way to discover Muskoka. From the many hiking
trails crisscrossing vast Algonquin Park to pleasant strolls along picturesque streets and boardwalks, Muskoka’s one endless
outdoor adventure. Wilderness hikes will lead to encounters with vast stretches of trees and water, all of it home to a
tremendous array of wildlife. In town you’ll be rewarded with unique dining, shopping and cultural experiences. There are,
of course, many other great reasons to visit Muskoka: fantastic golf, relaxing spas, skiing, festivals and art shows… the list
is endless.
Stretching from the vast wilderness of Algonquin in the east to the rugged windswept shores of Georgian Bay in the west,
the District of Muskoka – including the towns of Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville, and the townships of Georgian
Bay, Lake of Bays and Muskoka Lakes – offers a truly unique Canadian experience, one that will draw future generations of
travellers for decades to come.

By Bryan Dearsley
Vacationing is something we all do for fun. But have you ever stopped to consider just
how much of a learning experience a spot of travel can be, especially for a young
developing mind? New places, new faces, new cultures… history, geography,
languages. The list of educational opportunities is endless.
Author Keith Bellows
Muskoka
offers unique
learning
opportunities
for young travellers,
says author.
“Muskoka’s one
of the purest
expressions of
natural wonder,
combined with
the potential for
childhood
wonder.”
Fortunately for parents, the importance of travel and learning for kids is very near and
dear to the heart of author Keith Bellows. A parent himself, Bellows perhaps understands this more than most as he’s Editor-in-chief of National Geographic Traveler, one
of the world’s leading travel magazines. So when Bellows says Muskoka’s a great place
to take a child in order to broaden their worldview, you know he’s right.
“I think Muskoka’s one of the purest expressions of natural wonder, combined with the
potential for childhood wonder,” says Bellows, whose latest book, 100 Places that can
Change Your Child’s Life: From Your Backyard to the Ends of the Earth is available
from National Geographic Books. Muskoka, of course, is featured in the book.
Canadian born and bred, it’s perhaps not surprising that Bellow’s fondness for
Muskoka stems from his own childhood experiences here. The region certainly keeps
good company in his book, holding its own alongside destinations such as the Grand
Canyon, Loch Ness… even Antarctica.
“It was a rite of passage,” says Bellows. “It was where I learned to waterski and canoe.
More importantly, it’s where I really learned to appreciate nature. The world is the
greatest classroom we have. I’m convinced that any parent willing to give the gift of
travel offers a gift that keeps on giving. Children who learn to travel will travel to learn.
And they will do it all their lives.”
Kid Stuff
In addition to all that
fantastic wilderness just
waiting to be explored,
Muskoka is home to a
tremendous variety of
unforgettable
experiences youngsters will simply love. Topping the
list is that ageless favourite, Santa’s Village Family
Entertainment Park. Located in Bracebridge, Santa’s
Village has been entertaining kids of all ages for over
50 years. An un-filled trip to Santa’s Village includes
the pay-as-you-play Sportsland Park with its thrilling
go-carts, mini-golf, batting cages, zip-lines and
trekking, laser tag and an arcade, as well as an
excellent river cruise.
Wannabe pirates and sailors will want to visit the world
famous RMS Segwun, North America’s oldest still
operating steamship. Throughout the summer this
classic vessel, along with its sister ship Wenonah II,
hosts a variety of exciting adventures for kids,
including the excellent Pirate Cruise. Animal lovers
in your family will want to visit for the Noah’s Ark
Cruise, complete with a selection of local furry friends.
3
While visiting the ships,
be sure to pop across to
the Muskoka Boat and
Heritage Centre for its
fascinating collection of
antique boats, steamship
memorabilia and fun
digital games for kids.
Another great attraction
for kids is the always fun
Bala Museum, located
in the former summer
cottage of Anne of Green
Gables creator Lucy Maud
Montgomery. In addition to its fun displays,
the museum’s very handson, and even encourages visitors to dress up in period
costumes.
Finally, what child wouldn’t enjoy spending time at one
of Muskoka’s wonderful summer camps? The choices
are endless, and include everything from sports camps
to camps focusing on theatre and the arts.

Your guide to fun
year-round activities in Muskoka
When it comes to enjoying Muskoka, you can’t do much
better than participating in one of the many incredible
outdoor adventures on offer throughout the region: rock
climbing, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, diving and eco-adventures, to name but a few. Then,
of course, there are the winter months with skiing and
snowboarding, tubing and tobogganing, dogsledding,
snowmobiling and snowshoeing – the list is endless. Here
are a few tips to get you started…
Zip Lining and Treetop Trekking
These thrilling family focused adventures provide a
chance to see the world from a completely different
perspective using rope bridges, zip lines, climbing nets,
footbridges and swings. In addition to the fun, there are
very positive character building attributes, too: it helps
kids develop independence and responsibility, conquer
fear of heights and focuses concentration… and provides
a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with
Mother Nature.
Biking
Muskoka’s diverse landscape offers bikers some of the
best downhill and trail experiences anywhere in Ontario.
For those who prefer a flatter cycling surface, mile-aftermile of quiet tree-lined rural roads lend themselves well
to a leisurely pedal… or a fast-paced workout.
Off-roading
For those who enjoy a motorized ride on the wild side,
a variety of exciting options are available in Muskoka.
Hummer tours, for example, include an experienced

vehicles’ off-road capabilities. Prefer to do the

Alternatively, try an ATV off-road adventure along
Muskoka’s 3000km trail network. Better still, sign up
for a fun-filled ATV camping safari.
Eco-tourism & Extreme Camping
Eco-tourism in Muskoka offers a perfect opportunity to
experience the region’s diverse wilderness, and area outfitters offer exciting experiences ranging from daylong
excursions to seven-day adventures in beautiful Algonquin Park. Algonquin boasts an impressive 1,600kms
of canoe routes for the adventurous to explore, and is
a great place for families and friends to spend quality
time while experiencing the great outdoors.
Stargazing
One of the best places to observe the night sky is
the Torrance Barrens near Gravenhurst. Designated
Canada’s first Dark Sky Reserve, Torrance Barrens is a
star-filled protected space free from intrusion by urban
light pollution (so take a flashlight).
Snowmobiles
For fans of winter, numerous marinas, resorts and
tour operators offer snowmobile adventures. Packages
available include overnight rides stopping at a resort
or lodge, as well as daily/hourly rentals. Whatever your
choice, your adventure will take you on a thrilling ride
along sections of Ontario’s largest snowmobile trail
network – some 1200kms of trails crisscross Muskoka
waiting to be explored.
Water Activities
Muskoka has mile after mile of waterways and lakes to
explore, and many local businesses offer rentals of boats,
canoes and kayaks. The bigger lakes – Muskoka, Lake of
Bays, Rosseau and Joseph – are a hotbed of wakeboarding and waterskiing activities, boasting some of the best
conditions in Canada. The region is also popular for
scuba divers, and fans of fishing won’t be disappointed:
spinning, bait casting, fly-fishing, ice fishing, kayak
ishing… pike, bass, trout, walleye and muskie. Whatever your preference, Muskoka has some of the best
freshwater sport fishing anywhere, with packages
available for avid anglers and novices alike.
Paintball
Paintball is North America’s fastest-growing action
game, and few locations can provide the kind of
backdrop that Muskoka’s unique landscape offers. No
experience is necessary, and packages are available that
include everything that’s needed fun (gun, paintballs
and protective pullover) to have fun is provided.
Horseback Riding
Muskoka’s riding stables offer a variety of equine
activities suitable for all levels of experience and ages.
Options include supervised adult trail rides, day camps
for young riders, as well as carriage and horse drawn
wagon rides.

Family Run, Family Fun
Muskoka’s resorts work hard to keep it in the family
Muskoka’s reputation as a fantastic fun family
destination is certainly well deserved. Regardless of
their interests, families will always find something fun
to do in this beautiful year-round playground.
breathe the lifestyle here. What makes it so special for
guests is that they get the stories, the feeling, the passion
and the history of the resorts and the area. They end up
getting so much more than just a nice view.”
So it should come as no big surprise that many of
Muskoka’s resorts are not only family friendly, they’re
run by families, too. A group of these privately owned
family-run resorts have in fact banded together to
promote their family friendly focus, and are eager to
share this message with visitors to Muskoka.
Wallace knows of what he speaks. His family own
one of the oldest of Muskoka’s vacation properties,
Foxwood Resort, a cottage resort established in1876.
In addition to himself and his wife, each of his three
children has also worked at the resort. “It’s because of
things like this, the family connections, that people come
back to these resorts year after year,” he says. “We’ve all
seen families come with their kids, only to see them grow
up and come back with kids of their own.”
“So many of the resorts in the area have been in the same
families for generation upon generation,” says Rob
Wallace, a founding member of the 14-member
Resorts of North Muskoka group. “Sure, they’ve
changed over the years, but when guests are greeted at
these resorts they’re welcomed by people who live and
Other benefits for guests, says Wallace, is the chance
to get to know the people who own and run the
properties, a personal touch not always available at
much larger properties. “You really do feel like you’re a
somebody,” adds Wallace. “You’re welcomed and looked
after by people who truly care about their business and,
of course, how important it is for their guests to have a
good time.”
7
A long tradition of looking
after visitors
For nearly 140 years, Muskoka’s resorts and lodges
have welcomed visitors from far and wide. Many of
those resorts are still bustling today, a testament to the
region’s reputation as one of the world’s
top resort destinations.
“It gives me great pride to tell people I’m from Muskoka,”
says Rick Breckbill, whose family has owned and
operated Severn Lodge for close to 100 years.
“Muskoka has such unique and spectacular scenery,
including its huge granite rock outcroppings, windswept
pines and its hundreds of lakes and rivers. It’s just
beautiful up here.”
In addition to the region’s stunning scenery and
laidback pace of life, Breckbill believes the longevity of
so many of Muskoka’s resorts has a lot to do
with location.
“Muskoka’s worldwide appeal is due to so many things,”
he says. “But the close proximity to a major gateway
airport, coupled with its spectacular scenery, are two of
the most important reasons for its popularity.”
“But,” adds Breckbill, “as nice as it is to have world class
cities nearby, it’s always a great feeling to return
home to the peace and quiet of our lake country.
The lifestyle here simply can’t be beat.”

A New Muskoka
“There’s no denying that Muskoka has a lengthy list of
outdoor activities to keep you busy through the summer
months. Each year my family arrives from the city eager
to do all our favourites like paddling, cycling, hiking
and boating.
Last summer we climbed out of this funk at one of
Muskoka’s newer attractions, Treetop Trekking in
Huntsville. Conveniently located between Huntsville
and Dwight along Highway 60. We ended up
spending an unforgettable afternoon climbing through
some classic Ontario forest on an intricately built
network of platforms, wooden bridges, zip lines and
other creative and challenging games dangling high
in the trees.
My oldest daughter and I were proud that we had conquered the parks most challenging courses, while my wife
and son were just as satisfied with having completed
the beginner and intermediate courses. As the summer
came to an end, our visit to Treetop Trekking stood out
as one of the highlights of the summer and from now on
will be added to our list of summer must-do’s.”

CRUISING

Do not leave your camera behind.
One of best ways to enjoy the splendour of the Muskoka
landscape is from the deck of a tour boat. With over seven
certified cruise operators providing tours and cruises on the
larger Muskoka lakes and Georgian Bay you will get to see
magnificent scenery, outstanding boathouses and marvelous
summer homes. The cruises range from sightseeing tours along
the fabled Millionaires’ Row, lunch and dinner cruises, and
overnight adventures which include accommodations at a
historic resort. A cruise in Muskoka is a memory to be
cherished forever.
The oldest and the most iconic of the cruise ships is the
R.M.S. Segwun, built in 1887. This 99 passenger ship departs
from Gravenhurst’s Muskoka Wharf along with its sister ship
the Wenonah II on a regular schedule throughout the day.
If you are in the Bracebridge area, the 300 passenger Lady
Muskoka offers an excursion down the Muskoka River and out
into Lake Muskoka. While visiting Port Carling, Sunset Cruises
offers a variety of cruises including luncheon cruises (must be
pre-booked) or regular scheduled scenic cruises on the 45
passenger Peerless II or for a more intimate cruise, the 12
passenger yacht, the Idyllwood, which operates out of
different ports of call depending on the day. In the village of
Dorset there is the historic yacht the Bigwin that sail a limited
schedule of cruises during the summer season. This historic
boat ferried the rich and famous like Clark Gamble, Louis
Armstrong, Winston Churchill, Greta Garbo and many others
from the mainland to the prestigious Bigwin Island Resort.
If you are on the Georgian Bay side of Muskoka and want to
see the ruggedness of the coast, you will find two
excellent tour boats operating in different areas. The Island
Queen 550 passenger operates twice daily tours out of the
harbor at Parry Sound, viewing Georgian Bay’s 30,000 Islands
Biosphere Reserve. The Miss Midland sets sail with different
departure times out of Midland along the southeastern side
of Georgian Bay and taking you towards Beausoleil Island.
Many smaller vessels are also available across Muskoka for
intimate family cruises, including pontoon boats, classic
wooden launches and vintage yachts.
12
MAKING MEMORIES
Muskoka’s family-friendly attractions offer unforgettable
learning experiences.
The list of family-friendly attractions and events to be
found in Muskoka is a long one. Not only is the region
home to one of Ontario’s oldest annual outdoor art
shows, Muskoka Arts & Crafts, it also boasts Canada’s
oldest studio tour in the annual Muskoka Autumn
Studio Tour, as well as the century old heritage theatre,
the Gravenhurst Opera House. Muskoka’s many
music festivals, such as the Huntsville Festival of the
Arts, keep the crowds coming back for more. Add to
this mix the almost daily Farmer’s Markets, and you’ve
got a first rate tourism destination that’s rich in culture
and heritage.
Many museums have also popped up in celebration
of Muskoka’s cultural and social heritage, such as the
Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling – a history
that encompasses peoples from around the globe, from
the early British settlers responsible for starting the
resort industry in the 19th Century, to their American
guests, to the Norwegians who used Muskoka Airport
as a training base in World War 2 and who are
celebrated at the facility’s Little Norway Memorial.
13
All told, Muskoka boasts nine superb museums and 40
historic sites, each offering exciting educational family
adventures dedicated to everything from transportation
(visit the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre for its
antique boats and steamship memorabilia), to famous
people (famed Canadian doctor Norman Bethune,
born in Gravenhurst, is celebrated at Bethune
Memorial House, while Anne of Green Gables creator
and Muskoka cottager Lucy Maud Montgomery is
honoured at the Bala Museum). Other great tour boat
options include a number of historical vessels, such
as Peerless II and the Idyllwood operated by Sunset
Cruises on Lake Muskoka and Bigwin on Lake of Bays,
and more modern vessels such as Lady Muskoka (Lake
Muskoka) and Island Queen (Georgian Bay).
In addition, each of Muskoka’s major towns has
something unique to offer in terms of arts and culture.
Huntsville, along with its bustling main street and its
many entertainment opportunities, has the delightful
Muskoka Heritage Place with its pioneer exhibits;
Gravenhurst has its magical steamships, part of the
fantastic Real Muskoka attraction; and Bracebridge
has its antique, arts and collectable stores, as well as the
beautiful Bracebridge Falls.
Outdoor Fun
You can also get close to nature at the excellent Visitor
Centre in Algonquin Park, or at the Torrance
Barrens Dark Sky Reserve. For those seeking an even
more exhilarating experience, numerous Muskoka
attractions provide exciting adventures suitable for the
whole family. From waterskiing and wakeboarding
lessons to a thrilling outdoor adventure aboard ATVs
or personal watercraft, there’s never a dull moment for
the young – and the young at heart – in Muskoka. For
those preferring a more traditional means of transport,
try your hand at trail riding across Muskoka’s rugged
terrain with Maple Valley Ranch in Bracebridge.
Of course, no trip to Muskoka would be complete
without visiting Santa’s Village Family Entertainment
Park in Bracebridge, which has been entertaining kids
of all ages for over 50 years. A trip to Santa’s Village
includes the pay-as-you-play Sportsland Park with its
thrilling go-carts, mini-golf, batting cages, laser tag
and arcade.

Fitness and spas packages
make for lasting memories
It might just be the perfect fitness regime: all it takes
is Muskoka’s crystal clear waters, a paddleboard, some
spectacular scenery… and an ancient method of attaining good health and wellness. Add all these elements and
you’ve got a fun new experience called SUP, or stand up
paddleboard yoga, a fantastic new way to combine
everything that’s special about Muskoka with one of the
healthiest activities for mind and body.
“Many summer visitors participate in our paddleboard
programs,” says Tara Kinden, owner of Gravenhurst-based
Muskoka Yoga Studio. “It’s perfect for people looking for a
totally unique fitness experience. It’s an amazing way to
experience the very best of Muskoka as it involves taking the
yoga studio experience out onto the water. It’s incredible.
And your downward dog view is pretty awesome!”
Kinden’s been leading SUP classes on Muskoka Beach on
Lake Muskoka for two years now, and has begun expanding the program into a number of area resorts, as well as
making it available for private groups across the region.
Muskoka
17
“We travel to cottages with 12 boards, bringing the
whole experience with us,” says Kinden. “People
simply love it. You’re on your board, the waves
lapping beneath you, gently rocking you from side to
side. It’s incredible, so Muskoka, and so very unique.”
In addition to paddleboard sessions, Muskoka Yoga
Studio also offers memorable wellness weekends that
include sunset and candlelit beach yoga. These are
available as private sessions to be experienced with
family and friends, or for groups and events, such as
bachelorette parties and corporate getaways. Everything needed is provided, including the paddleboards
and lifejackets.
All of Muskoka’s major resorts have first-rate spas,
and the region boasts numerous private locations
perfect for getting your aromatherapy fix or
pedicure. Best of all, traditional spa packages needn’t
be so traditional, with many resorts stepping up the
spa experience a notch with innovative packages
focusing on whatever seems to be ailing you and
helping you unwind and reconnect.
After all, as Tara Kinden at Muskoka Yoga says:
“That’s what Muskoka is all about. Tranquility, and
building lasting memories. So if you can build a
Muskoka memory that involves the water and sunsets,
that’s a very powerful, unforgettable happy place!”
Lakeside Pampering
If you’re looking for a little pampering after that
lakeside workout, you’re in the right place. Muskoka’s
home to numerous world-class spas, many of them
set against some of the most spectacular scenery
you’ll find anywhere. And who wouldn’t feel relaxed
after having a lakeside hot-stone massage? It’s hard
not to feel revitalized in such serene surrounds.
“If you can build a Muskoka
memory that involves the
water and sunsets, that’s a
very powerful, unforgettable
happy place!”

Homegrown
produce a staple of region’s
culinary tourism
Culinary tourism in Muskoka has a rich and proud
history. Widely regarded as one of Canada’s most
enduring and popular vacation destinations, the
region has developed a tremendous network of food
growers and producers – from wines and beers to
organic vegetables, fruits and meats – whose products
are sold not just locally, but across the continent.
Many of Muskoka’s first resorts in fact evolved from
farming operations started by settlers, and at one time
much of the fresh produce consumed by visitors was
grown locally. Names like Milford Bay’s Butter & Egg
Road serve as a reminder of the farms that once
supplied dairy products to tourists.
Today, Muskoka’s food producers again play an
important role in the region’s economy – so important
a role, in fact, that
local producers and
restaurants have
banded together to
ensure consumers have
access to as wide a
selection of regional
culinary products,
experiences and packages unique to Muskoka as
possible. Leading the charge is Savour Muskoka, a
group of some 120 regional growers, microprocessors,
accommodation stakeholders, restaurants, chefs and
retailers dedicated to facilitating the successful development of the region as a dynamic culinary tourism
19
destination by promoting all sectors of the economy
with an interest in local food and drink.
Field-to-Fork
This “field-to-fork” approach has certainly proven
successful. Pay a visit to any good restaurant or food
retailer and you’ll find numerous examples of local
produce. Everything from cranberries, mushrooms,
lettuce and maple syrup – all from Muskoka – can be
enjoyed, as well as meat products and wines.
Many resorts, in fact, have gone so far as to produce
their own “made in Muskoka” produce. Homegrown
items on its menus, including such things as honey
and maple syrup. Staff are not averse to foraging for
the freshest ingredients, and will even work closely
with grounds keepers to plant and nurture interesting
native varieties of vegetables.
You can also enjoy the region’s bountiful harvest of
excellent produce at a variety of quality culinary
events, trails, packages and experiences across
Muskoka. In addition, many restaurants highlight

A Signature Canadian Experience
It’s Official!
Canada crowns another Muskoka
attraction as “world-class”
Way to go, Muskoka! The Canadian Tourism
Commission (CTC) has designated the ‘Bog to
Bottle Discovery’ at Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh &
Muskoka Lakes Winery as a Signature Canadian
Experience. This makes the Bala-based attraction one
of a select collection of uniquely Canadian travel
experiences marketed to international travellers, a
stamp of quality recognized by the international
tourism marketplace.
“We couldn’t be more excited about this designation,” says
Wendy Hogarth, owner of Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh
& Muskoka Lakes Winery. “When we started Muskoka
Lakes Winery, I discovered an ancient culinary secret:
delicious wines can be made from locally grown fruit. As a
Signature Experience, I’ll get to share this
passion with the world.”
“The Canadian Signature Experiences
collection recognizes truly authentic Canadian
experiences that entice travellers and position Canada
as a destination of choice on the world stage.”
Adds Lesley Commandant, the attraction’s CFO
(Customer Fun Officer): “We’re seeing more international visitors every year, and I’m looking forward to helping
them discover something uniquely Canadian.”
The ‘Bog to Bottle Discovery’ begins with a guided
journey to the cranberry bog. Surrounded by Muskoka
wilderness, guests learn of the bog’s secrets before
heading to the winery to relax at the wine bar, sipping
their way from red-style dry wines to ice-style dessert
wines, all crafted from local fruit.
“Canadian tourism entrepreneurs do an excellent job
ensuring visitors explore everything our country has to
offer,” says the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister
of State for Small Business and Tourism and
Agriculture. “The Canadian Signature Experiences
collection recognizes truly authentic Canadian experiences
that entice travellers and position Canada as a destination
of choice on the world stage.”
The Bog to Bottle Discovery joins Muskoka
Steamship’s ‘Millionaire’s Row aboard R.M.S.
Segwun’, the only other Signature Experience to be
located in Muskoka.

TRAILBLAZIN’
There’s no better way to experience Muskoka than by spending a little time on the region’s
extensive trail network. Whether your preference is on foot or by bike, Muskoka’s trails will
take you places not always accessible by car: to majestic tree-covered rock outcrops with
uninterrupted panoramic views of the spectacular Canadian Shield; to secluded lakes, rivers
and streams; and, of course, to places where you can get up close with the region’s
tremendous diversity of flora and fauna.
With more than 300 kilometers of recreational trails – including a section of the TransCanada Trail, the world’s longest multi-use trail system – it’s perhaps no big surprise that
Muskoka has long been a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. It’s largely thanks to the
hard work and dedication of the Muskoka Trails Council, a not-for-profit body
founded in 2007, that the region’s trail system has flourished. Established to promote public
health through the support and co-ordination of the construction and maintenance of
Muskoka’s trails network, this farsighted group also advances the need for environmental
conservation and protection through educational and recreational opportunities.
Area resorts, too, have been quick to pick up on the potential for these trails to attract visitors
to the area. Many of the larger resorts have well-maintained trails for hikers and bikers alike
on their properties, many of them connecting seamlessly to the larger district-wide network.
As for the smaller resort properties, such as the many lodges and campsites, a variety of
programs are in place to ensure these major trails are well marked and accessible.
Town Trails…
Famous for its spectacular waterfalls, historic Bracebridge boasts a variety of excellent trails,
many of them leading to stunning views of the numerous waterfalls along the Muskoka
River and its tributaries, including High Falls, Wilson’s Falls and, of course, majestic
Bracebridge Falls. Along with these picturesque trails – a particular treat in spring when the
snowmelt swells the rivers, or during autumn’s spectacular display of colours – Bracebridge
also offers many riverside and forested trails perfect for a gentle stroll. Huntsville, too, has a
number of easily accessible trails well suited to hiking and biking, as well as for winter
activities like snowshoeing and Nordic skiing.
A little to the south, the town of Gravenhurst maintains nine distinct trails, each traversing
a different section of the community. Suitable for activities such as hiking, skiing,
23

snowshoeing and bicycling, Gravenhurst’s trails include
lovely lakeside jaunts along the shores of Lake Muskoka
– the former railway line connecting Muskoka Wharf
and its steamships to the downtown area is a favourite
– as well as scenic views overlooking wetlands and the
lake. And for the more adventurous hiker, a variety of
trickier day-long hikes along more rugged terrain offer
excellent opportunities to explore exposed granite
outcrops, beaver ponds and wildlife habitats.
Country Trails…
In the northeast corner of Muskoka, the Town of
Huntsville and the Township of Lake of Bays offers
visitors a stunning landscape of forests, rocks, wetlands
and lakes because of its natural beauty, it’s an important
destination for cottagers and visitors alike. Its three
communities include Baysville, Dwight and Dorset, each
with its own distinct character and amenities, as well as
numerous trails and recreational opportunities. Lake of
Bays’ offerings vary from historical village walking tours
to picturesque lakefront trails, as well as nature hikes
such as that along the Oxtongue River with its
connection to Algonquin Park. Further to the west, the
Township of Muskoka Lakes lays claim to some of the
region’s most spectacular scenery, from ancient craggy
cliffs to its dense foliage. The township has a variety
of excellent trails, including the lunar-like Torrance
Barrens, Canada’s first dark sky reserve, as well as the
popular Hardy Lake and Huckleberry Rock trails. A
little further west, the Township of Georgian Bay is adding trails of its own to those already established by third
parties such as the Georgian Bay Island National Park
and Six Mile Provincial Park.
If you’re considering exploring Muskoka’s trail network,
consider investing a little time exploring Muskoka Trails
Council’s informative website (www.muskokatrails
council.com). The site not only contains details of the
many trails that crisscross Muskoka, it also includes
detailed maps as well as useful tips and tactics. For those
wanting a portable version of this information, a useful
map clip ($5) can be purchased from locations such as
Muskoka Tourism’s visitor centres.
A Walk in the Park
24
A l go n qu in tr a vel b e c o m e s fa m i l y t ra di t i o n
Algonquin Park has a way of getting under the skin.
Just ask Jack Wadsworth, Honorary Chair of Morgan
Stanley and owner of Muskoka landmarks Bigwin
Island and Port Cunnington Lodge. At the age of nine,
Wadsworth was introduced to the delights of his first
Muskoka summer by his grandfather (and mentor)
during a stay at Deerhurst Resort. It wasn’t long before
the pair – often joined by Wadsworth’s father – were
venturing farther afield, exploring the wilderness that
is Algonquin Park on what became regular fishing and
camping trips often lasting days at a time.
Today, it’s Wadsworth who’s doing the mentoring.
Along with his adult children and their offspring,
members of the Wadsworth family (some as young as
seven) disappear into Algonquin Park for a few days of
quality time together every summer.
“Those first trips with my grandfather were intense,” he
says. “It was usually just the two of us for days on end.
It’s such an incredible bonding time. That’s the same way
I feel when I’m in the wilderness, in Algonquin, with my
grandchildren.”
It matters not, says Wadsworth, that these overnight
trips are so much shorter than those he’s done in
the past – it’s still wilderness, and one he’s pleased
to say hasn’t changed much since his own boyhood
adventures. He’s also quick to point out that these
regular outings offer unique opportunities to introduce
younger members of the family to the great outdoors in
the hope they’ll catch the wilderness bug just as he did.
He adds, each trip teaches youngsters rudimentary
skills they’d likely not otherwise be exposed to. For
example, a typical trip to Algonquin’s Opeongo Lake
involves three nights of camping in the bush, traversing
portages, breaking camp every morning and pitching
tents again at night. In between, lessons are taught and
learned regarding seemingly simple but vital things,
such as the best bark to use when starting a fire (birch),
how to prepare camp, and how to properly portage
while carrying a canoe and packsack and then, of
course, there are the rewards for all that effort and hard
work, such as paddling around a bend in a mossy creek
only to find a gigantic moose standing at the shoreline
looking at you.
“The out of doors and wilderness are things we’re all
naturally inclined toward,” says Wadsworth. “And to
experience it and to facilitate that experience is very
satisfying. Experiencing nature is so important for kids as
they grow-up. There’s a real nature deficit today, and trips
like this can help close that gap between the environment
and the modern world we live in. To be a well balanced
person, you need to connect those two worlds.”
It’s a connection that, in Muskoka at least, many future
generations will continue to enjoy.
25
Algonquin’s (not quite so) wild side
So, you want to experience Muskoka’s wild side, but
with all the comforts of home? No problem! Algonquin
Park is home to three lodge-style resorts offering unique
accommodation options:
Bartlett Lodge
In addition to its cabins, cottages and suites, Bartlett
Lodge now offers a unique “Tent and Breakfast”
program. Accommodations consist of luxurious
platform tent with a king size bed, full linen service
and a deck overlooking a small bay on Cache Lake.
Breakfast is included, and each tent has its own threepiece bathroom.
Arowhon Pines
It’s well worth tackling what must be one of the longest
driveways in Canada for a spell at Arowhon Pines,
a spacious compound of lakeside lodges and cabins.
Surrounded by a blue and evergreen-coloured forest,
the resort sits on lovely Joe Lake, a postcard-perfect
setting from which to watch wildlife and enjoy the
great outdoors without ever being too far from a little
pampering and the comforts of home.
Killarney Lodge
Located in the heart of Algonquin Park and offering a
cozy, comfortable alternative to roughing it is typical of
the old-world charm of Killarney Lodge. Killarney has
been welcoming guests for over 70 years, offering awayfrom-it-all accommodations in its spacious log cabins
snuggled against the rugged backdrop so typical of
the region.

Georgian Bay Islands
National Park
Nestled in the famous 30,00 islands, the world’s largest
chain of freshwater islands, Georgian Bay Islands
National Park (GBINP) is where you’ll be inspired by
the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield and the clear
water of Georgian Bay! The 63 park islands and shoals
stretch along the eastern shoreline of the bay for roughly
50 km from Honey Harbour north to Twelve Mile Bay.
Beausoleil Island is the largest park island and the hub
of visitor adventures. On the south end of Beausoleil
Island you’ll find waterfront cabin rentals, shoreline
campsites, mountain bike rentals, a welcome centre,
interpretive programs, picnic shelters, beaches and trails
for hiking and biking. The northern part of the island
boasts rustic camping areas and the parks’ best hiking
trails, which follow scenic granite ridges dotted with
windswept white pines to picturesque bays. Docking
facilities scattered around the island are very popular
during summer with pleasure boaters seeking the
great views!
For Nature and History Lovers!
Created in 1929, GBINP straddles two natural
regions and is a core protected area of the Georgian
Bay Biosphere Reserve. The southern end of the park
is dominated by lush deciduous forest. The northern
portion of the park is rugged Canadian Shield. This mix
of ecosystems results in a high diversity of plants and
wildlife in the park. In fact, GBINP has more reptile
and amphibian species than any other national park in
Canada! Bird-watchers will tally an impressive checklist
of breeding birds including Prairie Warblers and Scarlet
Tanagers. The park also has significant cultural heritage,
having been occupied continuously for over 5,500 years.
Getting There
The park is made up entirely of islands and is accessible
only by boat. Parks Canada operates a boat shuttle
service called the DayTripper, which runs between
Honey Harbour and Beausoleil Island (reservations are
recommended).

On the Road Again… and Again!
Another Muskoka business celebrating a landmark
anniversary in 2014 is Hammond Transport. It all
started in 1944 when the principal of Bracebridge High
School advised the then 14-year-old Orvil Hammond
to give up school and go get a job. Heeding this sage
advice, Hammond bought a 1938 Ford Sedan… and
started a taxi business.
His father, Harold, joined the family business soon after,
and it wasn’t long before the duo were branching out
by purchasing a panel van equipped with sideseats to
transport students to and from school, as well as trucks
and ambulances.
Elegant Wedding
Transportation
Now, 70 years later, Hammond Transport has grown to
such an extent that it employs nearly 200 people within
its travel and tour divisions, Hammond Transportation
Ltd. and Muskoka Travel Service. As the company’s
President, Orvil Hammond remains very involved with
the company, while son Greg oversees much of the
day-to-day running of the family business. Amazingly, a
fourth generation of Hammonds is also involved in the
business as it continues to expand. Its impressive fleet of
more than 175 vehicles now includes school bus, travel
and touring services throughout Muskoka, as well as
Parry Sound, North Simcoe, Haliburton and Algonquin
Park areas… even providing coast-to-coast services in
Canada and the US.
The company’s flourishing travel agency, Muskoka
Travel, also had humble beginnings, starting with annual
outings to the CNE and Royal Winter Fair. Today, this
branch of the business also includes monthly shopping
trips to Toronto and day trips to Niagara Falls. The
service has spread its wings even further and now
includes international destinations such as Hawaii,
Iceland, Ireland, Portugal and Africa. Other services
include activity buses, adult and executive vans, plus
luxury sedans and chauffer services, limousines and
classic vehicles.
The
Meeting
Place
31
Hailed as one of the most stunning places to visit on earth, Muskoka serves up meeting and
conference locations that are far from the ordinary. A board meeting that overlooks a beautiful,
crystal clear lake is just the beginning. Delegates will love the relaxing atmosphere of the region,
being able to go from business meetings to the beach in a matter of seconds. Meeting attendees
will also love all of the activities they can experience after business is wrapped up for the day.
When the weather is warm, delegates can go unwind by the water with a beverage, take a historic
boat cruise on one of our pristine lakes, or golf at one of Muskoka’s award winning golf courses
(home to 6 of Canada’s top 100). For more adventure on the water, they can try canoeing,
kayaking, or boat and jet ski rentals. For adventures on the trails, they can try their hand at
trekking in the treetops, aerial zip-lining or ATV’ing deep in Muskoka’s backwoods.
Fall in Muskoka is one of the most spectacular times of year with the landscape ablaze in vibrant
red, yellow, and orange colours, making this the perfect time of year for a meeting in Muskoka.
When the snow flies, Muskoka’s winter activities begin to heat up! Delegates can always enjoy
the après meetings scene, with roaring fireplaces and warm beverages served up in a comfortable
lounge. Muskoka is also renowned for a number of winter sports including snowshoeing, cross
country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, ice skating trails,
pond hockey and ice fishing. The
opportunities are endless in Muskoka.
Year round, Muskoka has all the amenities
you need for your next meeting or
conference, including teambuilding
activities with both indoor and outdoor
resources to support your programs.
In Muskoka, you can have the best of
both worlds, the convenience of the city
but in a picturesque Muskoka setting.

Night-time fun
easy to find in Cottage Country
While you’re no doubt aware of Muskoka’s
millennia-old Canadian Shield, chances are you’re not
as familiar with that other rock-type known to
frequent the region – the kind of rock that rolls.
Not only is Muskoka famous as a hotbed of musical
talent – it is, after all, where Shania Twain and Deric
Ruttan honed their skills – it’s also earned a reputation
amongst musicians themselves as a first-class venue
stopover on the live circuit, as well as a place to just
hang out (ask Keith Richards, often seen hanging out
in Bala).
Muskoka first attracted the attention of the world’s
music scene back in the 1920s and 30s when such
talent as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Guy
Lombardo visited resorts such as Bigwin to entertain
tourists with their big band sounds. Then, in 1942,
it was the turn of the Kee to Bala. Started by Gerry
Dunn and originally known as Dunn’s Pavillion, the
lakeside concert hall was soon drawing big names such
as Glenn Miller, Woody Herman… even Louis
Armstrong and while musical styles have changed
somewhat since those early days – recent visitors
include the likes of Burton Cummings, Colin James,
Blue Rodeo and April Wine – the Kee still draws
enthusiastic crowds.
Peter’s Players in Gravenhurst is another important
musical landmark in Muskoka. Now in its sixth year,
Peter’s Players has hosted countless professional acts
since opening its doors in 2008, including international music icons James Cotton, Johnny Winter,
Robben Ford, Omar and the Howlers, and John
Mayall – all of them thrilled to play to packed houses.
Muskoka Rocks

Music through the decades
Madonna, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac,
Gotye, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder and Queen, to
name but a few.
Another well-established Muskoka musical tradition
is Gravenhurst’s Music on the Barge. Now in its
55th year, performers literally play over water on a
large, specially designed stage a few yards from shore.
Opened just in time for a visit by the Queen in 1959,
the Barge program these days ranges from big bands
to Dixieland, jazz, folk, the rock of the 50s and 60s,
to modern country and pop. Held on Sunday nights
throughout the summer, these ever-popular concerts
draw large crowds of cottagers and locals alike. Also in
Gravenhurst is the iconic Opera House, famous for
the high caliber comedy, theatrical and musical talent
it attracts.
Finally, be sure to check out the year-round
Huntsville Festival of the Arts. Since its early
beginnings the Festival has entertained audiences with
an eclectic choice of music, including jazz, pop, choral,
Celtic, country, orchestral, and classical music… not
to mention a healthy smattering of theatre, prose,
poetry, and the visual arts. Presenting audience
favourites like John McDermott, Jesse Cook, Bruce
Cockburn and Hawksley Workman, the Festival also
acts as a launch pad for up and coming local artists
through its free Music at Noon concert series.
Another great way to experience music from a variety
of genres and eras is to pay a visit to Deerhurst Resort’s
excellent Decades show. This feast of fantastic music
from the 50s right through to the present day has been
around for years, and is in fact where Shania Twain got
her first big break in what was then called The Vegas
Show. The most recent incarnation is an all-new show,
and the energetic cast do an incredible job of covering
more than 70 songs from artists as diverse as
There are three other great theatre venues in Muskoka
offering a wide variety of entrainment. The Rene M.
Caisse Theatre in Bracebridge, Algonquin Theatre in
Huntsville both bring in top shows and performers.
New Actors’ Colony Theatre is celebrating 80 years of
professional summer theatre which started right here
in the small resort town of Bala in 1934.

Torrance Barrens, the stunning Huckleberry Rock Cut,
a man-made canyon over a kilometre long between
Port Carling and Bracebridge, and the Dorset Lookout
Tower, Algonquin Park… the list of great attractions
and landmarks is endless.
Muskoka is famous for its spectacular Fall foliage,
and for good reason. For a few weeks each year
before winter sets in – a season that brings its own
breathtaking beauty – Muskoka comes alive as its
endless acres of maple, aspen, tamarack and red oak
burst into colourful displays unrivalled anywhere in
the world. Vibrant reds, golds and oranges in countless
shades and variations are everywhere, providing a
tempting lure for visitors to explore the region’s vast
forests and abundant natural splendour.
An excellent option is to try one of Muskoka’s fantastic
driving tours. Stretching from the vast wilderness
of Algonquin in the east to the windswept shores of
Georgian Bay in the west, Muskoka is crisscrossed with
open roads. Numerous routes are just waiting to be
explored, from short jaunts around a particular lake
to the Grand Tour, a half-day-long journey that starts
There are, of course, many other great ways to get
outdoors and enjoy Muskoka’s spectacular Fall colours.
Go for a horseback trail ride, or even get out for a
round of golf for a chance to see the beautiful colours
up close and personal. For something truly memorable,
take a boat cruise to see the colours form the water.
Alternatively, grab a canoe or kayak and paddle one of
the many smaller lakes.
Finally, of course, there are the splendid Fall studio
tours to check out. Undoubtedly the best known is
the Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour, now in its 36th
year, and offering a truly unique educational and
cultural experience as numerous area arts and craft
practitioners open their doors to display their work.
all while enjoying the beautiful Muskoka landscape.
Another exciting route is Ontario’s newest barn quilt

to commemorate 135 years of settlement in the area,
portions of the quilts have been replicated on 24
buildings, historic and new.

Snow White
38
Muskoka’s the perfect winter playground
Just because everything’s covered in snow doesn’t mean you shouldn’t venture outdoors for a little fun
and adventure. In fact, it’s because of all that lovely white stuff that Muskoka’s such a great place to
explore in winter. With up to five snow-filled months each winter – recent records indicate five meters of
it in one season alone – Muskoka offers countless excellent outdoor winter recreation opportunities.
For downhill enthusiasts, Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Resort boasts an average annual snowfall of more
than 300cms and can handle 6500 skiers every hour on its 35 acres. Add to this mix a vertical drop of
100m and 11 different runs (the longest of which is 580m), and there’s little wonder Hidden Valley’s
becoming increasingly popular as a downhill destination for skiers and snowboarders alike.
Nordic (or cross-country) ski enthusiasts are also well served, with the region’s many parks and resorts
offering first-class groomed trails of varying lengths. In fact, an impressive 250 acres of wilderness in
Muskoka is accessible for Nordic skiers. Many of these same trails are also great for snowshoeing, a sport
that’s gained in popularity in recent years. Requiring minimal equipment, it takes just a few minutes
to learn. Modern snowshoes are also a far cry from the clumsy wood models of years past. Technology
has in fact led to a whole new generation of light, easy-to-use equipment that makes the sport a perfect
outdoor adventure for the whole family. Snowshoes can handle the deepest of snow, opening up the
backcountry for winter hiking and, for die-hards, Algonquin Park offers excellent winter camping
opportunities, including rental of heated tent-like structures called yurts.
Skate Park Fun
Skating is another popular and very accessible activity, with one of the best new ‘rinks’ being found in
beautiful Arrowhead Provincial Park just north of Huntsville. Opened in 2012, Arrowhead’s “Ice Trail”
is a 1.5 km skate path set amidst the snow-dusted trees that wind through the East River Campground.
Daytime skating parties can be arranged, and can include skate rentals as well as use of a campsite for an
afternoon campfire.
The list of other great winter activities worth experiencing is endless, and includes pond hockey, ice
fishing, dogsledding, winter horseback trail rides, curling and snow tubing. Also, most Muskoka
communities host popular winter festivals, many of them taking place during Christmas and March
Break, and often run in conjunction with area resorts.
For those who enjoy a little speed, the area lies in the middle of Ontario’s extensive snowmobile network.
In all, more than 1,600kms of trails crisscross the region, making Muskoka one of the most traversed
39
snowmobile destinations anywhere. For those
who don’t have a machine of their own, area
marinas and specialized tour operators keep
themselves busy each winter with machine and
equipment rentals. For something completely
different, dogsledding offers one of those
quintessentially Canadian experiences. Racing
through silent forests, the only noise you’ll hear
is the hiss of the sled skimming over the fresh
snow, along with the occasional bark from an
excited dog.
Finally, let’s not forget that hiking can still
be a lot of fun on a sunny winters day. Most
communities and resorts maintain walking
trails perfectly suited for a gentle stroll, as well
as opportunities to stop off afterwards for a
much welcome hot beverage around a bonfire
or roaring fireplace when you’re done.
“Most Muskoka
communities host
popular winter
festivals, many of
them taking place
during Christmas
and March Break,
and often run in
conjunction with
area resorts.”

“As a professional nature photographer
I have had the pleasure of traveling to
many parts of our great country, but few
can compare to the diverse natural beauty
of Muskoka. I choose to live and work in
Muskoka and not a day goes by where
I would want to be anywhere else.”
