Its origin is undocumented. A note on the back indicates Paul Fought is shown in the center of the front row. No other names were provided. We can assume the photo was taken before 1902 (Amos died in 1902 leaving only 5 remaining sons). If we assume that all living members of the family are present for this portrait, then this picture was probably taken after 1895 (i.e. after Israel passed away) when 6 sons remained alive. We assume that Paul’s third wife, Mary Lamb was not present in this photo. Mary Hetrick Fought and Sarah Parret Fought were no longer alive. 5/9/2004 468 Mary, George, Peter, & Philip Hetrick Family History of Sandusky Co., Ohio - Second Edition Daniel Hetrick Family Reunion Photo, Summer 1905 [45 people] Figure 19 Daniel Hetrick Family Reunion about 1905 [Photo provided by Harry M. Early pioneers learned that to farm this land, it had to be properly drained. Without human intervention, water would accumulate in shallow depressions of the flat countryside and drown out crops such as corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, and hay. To drain the Black Swamp, farmers learned to observe the subtle contours of their land and with a horse or tractor drawn blade or plow, and carve out small ditches (1-2 feet wide and up to a foot deep) that allowed the lower lying areas to drain toward the outer boundaries of the field. The water from the field then drained into larger ditches along the roadways which in turn emptied into nearby creeks or rivers that in turn emptied into Lake Erie. The larger ditches along the roadways were generally maintained by the various Townships as illustrated in the 1869 document provided below. When the field was re-plowed each the spring for a new crop, the previous year’s ditches were erased. It was then necessary to reconstruct the often intricate web of ditches that allowed the fields to drain efficiently. Although the ditches were reasonably effective in eliminating standing water, they created a significant nuisance. The above ground ditches were often treacherous for farm equipment to pass over, particularly the old horse-drawn hay wagons. In the early 1900s, underground clay drainage tiles were used in place of ditches. The underground tile were placed about 12-18” below the surface and collected the excess water that had penetrated to that depth. The red clay tiles used for the 5/9/2004 488 To David Hetrick Sir! Your assessment of costs is $1.00 payable to the Township Clerk, Salem Township Ottawa County Feb 10th 1869 Township Clerk Amos Fought by E. Tranck Dep. Mary, George, Peter, & Philip Hetrick Family History of Sandusky Co., Ohio - Second Edition laterals were 3-4” diameter cylinders about 12” long. “Laterals” were connected into the “mains” that were 6”, 8”, 10”, or 12” in diameter. The mains dumped the excess water into larger ditches and eventually into local streams and creeks. In Rice Twp., for example, Joe Taten was the owner and operator of a tile machine used to lay tile. The tiles were made in a number of local tile yards. For example, red clay was dug from a quarry in Kingsway and fired in a kiln operated there at the tile yard. The tile yard operated in the 1920s and 1930s and probably closed in the 1940s. The abandoned quarry later filled with water and became a favorite ice skating pond for the local youth during the winter months. It was returned to private use only in the 1980s.
