Loveland’s Expectations Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible ______News Briefs______ Wednesday Dismissal Don’t forget...Students will be dismissed every Wednesday at 3:00. Please be prompt as teachers are scheduled to leave the building each week to participate in professional learning communities. Guests Must Sign In Please remember to sign in and take a visitor badge every time you visit our school! I want to personally welcome you to the 2016-17 school year. I hope you have had an enjoyable summer with family and friends. Whether you are new to Loveland or a returning student/family, we look forward to you being a part of the Loveland Family, and hope you become involved in our school. I encourage every student and parent to embrace the opportunity to make this a great school year! The Loveland teachers and I have been busy over the summer preparing for the 2016-17 school year. We participated in professional development sessions to improve the instructional opportunities for students. This year the Loveland staff will be working on questioning strategies, refining assessments, continuing work on aligning instruction to the new English Language Arts and Math standards, and improving communication of what students are learning to students and parents. Our #1 goal is to improve student learning. Regardless of where your student begins the year, we want to help him/her in advancing their critical thinking, knowledge, skills, and ability to problem solve. If at any time you have a question about what is occurring in your student’s class, please contact your student’s teacher. We all need to work together to benefit our students. The District and building maintenance staff have been busy cleaning and preparing the buildings and grounds for the return of students. This summer, work was done in the gym and several classrooms. If you see Bob or Darren, take a moment to thank them for keeping our facility in such great shape. Ronco Construction has been working hard on our new fifth grade classrooms/storm refugee area and the front entrance. I hope each of you is able to attend our Sneak-a-Peek on Monday, August 8th from 6:007:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for you and your student to meet teachers, and bring in school supplies. The students’ first day of school will be Wednesday, August 10th. Best wishes for a successful 2016-17 school year! School Arrival Our school day begins at 8:40 am. Students may enter the building at 8:30 am. We ask that students not arrive before 8:30 am, unless: • • • • Participating in a school activity Serving on Safety Patrol Working with a teacher Attending Club 66 Before & After Care program WHY CAN’T I ARRIVE EARLY? Teachers are involved in team meetings, staff meetings and individual planning from 8:00-8:30 am. We look forward to seeing you and your child at our Sneak-A-Peek Night on August 8th at 6:00 p.m.! School Supplies For the 2016-2017 school year, we are once again asking families to consider donating school supplies. School supply lists for Loveland will be emailed to families and can be found on the Loveland website. As you are purchasing supplies, please consider purchasing a few additional items for our specials teachers. Attendance Each school day begins with taking attendance. It is very important that students be in their classrooms by 8:40 am so they are not missed during this procedure. We also take attendance immediately following the lunch recess, which means that if students leave campus for lunch with a parent, they need to be back when that attendance is taken. The school secretary will call the home or work of parents who have not called in and reported their child’s absence. Please help us with this by calling the office at 402-3906455 by 8:40 am when your student is not coming to school or will be late for school. Safety is our focus in making this request. Students coming in after 8:40 am or after attendance is taken in the afternoon must come to the office and sign in. Students coming or going during the day for appointments, illness, etc., must also sign in and out through the office. EMAIL Email is a great way to communicate with your child’s teacher. The Westside format is as follows: [email protected] Sample: [email protected] Monday, August 8th 6-7 pm Visit classrooms Meet your teacher See daily schedule Deposit lunch money Club 66 Before/After School registration Community Club Committee sign ups • • • • Beginning of The Year Reminders Please park in designated areas only. This is for the safety of all students, parents and staff. You are always welcome at Loveland School. When visiting any part of the building or playground area, you will need to sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge. If you are bringing a forgotten item to your child during the school day, please leave it at the office. We will make sure your child receives the item. Students leaving the building during the day need to be picked up from the office. If students return during the same day, they must sign back in. Online Newsletters In an effort to save paper resources and to reduce printing costs, we will continue to put the newsletter on our school website and will email a copy to families every Friday. Students will still bring home flyers advertising various nonprofit activities, along with a printed monthly school lunch menu. We will also print a limited number of newsletters for those families who request them. Please make sure we have your most current email address. If you would still like a printed version of the weekly newsletter, contact Mrs. Carlson at 402-390-6455. Often times parents will email or tell the teacher when their children are going to be gone, however, the office needs to know as well. We would appreciate your help with this anytime you know your child will be out of school. Also, please let the office know if you are going to be out of town and someone else will be taking care of your children. In the case of an emergency, we don’t want to waste precious time trying to get in touch with someone. Volunteers Needed! That way, you’ll see your child’s finished work as well as the teacher’s comments. Loveland Dress Expectations In order to ensure a positive learning environment where all feel comfortable and respected, please follow our Loveland dress expectations. We expect our students to wear clothing that: • • • • • Is clean, safe, and in good condition. Is considerate of others. Halter tops, bare shoulders, and short shorts are not acceptable. For a complete guideline for proper student dress please refer to our District Elementary Handbook. Use of Telephone Cell Phone Procedures All after school arrangements should be made by children and parents before arriving at school. Students will not be able to use the phone to make after school arrangements. If cell phones are brought to school, they are to be kept in backpacks with ringers turned off during the school day. They may only be used by students outside of the school building prior to 8:30 am or after 3:30 pm dismissal. If the need arises school phones are always available. 2016-2017 Battle of the Books News The Westside Community Council is excited to announce a traditional-format Battle of the Books event for the year 2016-2017. This event will be open to all 4th through 6th grade students in the District. It will be organized and run by parent volunteers. Organizers are planning for the Battle to be on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the Westside Middle School. • There will not be a qualifying test prior to the Battle. All teams will meet in March for the competition. • Each team should consist of three to four students. Teams can have up to five students but only four students will compete at each round. • Each team should have a team parent. • This year’s book list consists of 12 books. Books were selected that deal with interesting subject matter and are readily available at the elementary schools’ libraries and the Omaha Public Library. • All questions at the competition will be in the traditional Battle of the Books format where the answer is the title and author. For example: In which book does a boy color his white sneakers black? Answer: “Charlie Bumpers vs the Teacher of the Year” by Bill Harley. • All teams will participate in two rounds. Then, a bracket will be formed for the top 16 teams to move on in the Battle. • Due to the large number of teams that are anticipated, students will not be asked to present projects at the com petition. More details about the event’s format will be shared at your school’s Sneak-a-Peek Night in August. Medication/Health Information The health office must have a written, signed and dated Medication Authorization form from the parent or guardian requesting that his/her child be given medication during the school day (prescription or over-the-counter). This form is available in the office. • • Please be aware of items you are sending to school with your child. Thanks for making Loveland such a caring community for all our students. • Ms. Hornung • All medication must be brought to school and taken home from school by a parent. It must be in the original container, labeled with the child’s name, date prescribed, name of medication, directions for use, dosage information and the time the medication is to be given. Cough drops, and any over-the-counter medication must be in the original box/package, and a Medication Authorization form must be filled out. These medications are kept in the health office. Scrapes and cuts are washed and bandaged, if needed. We do not and cannot use any ointment or cleaning product on an individual. If an injury is severe or questionable, a parent will be contacted. All medication, including cough drops, must be picked up by a parent at the end of the duration. We will not send any medication home with a child. Traffic Flow - Drop Off/Pick Up Areas The safety of students, parents, and staff is very important to us. We ask that you review the procedures below and give your continued support as we make arrival and dismissal times safe for all students. ARRIVAL...Students may be dropped off on Loveland Drive or on Ridgewood Avenue. We have student valets assigned on Ridgewood to help get students out of the cars and into the building. Cars should never be parked and left unattended. DISMISSAL - ONE WAY SOUTH, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM...GRADES 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th There are two lanes of moving traffic. All students waiting for rides will wait at the far end of Ridgewood (near the portables). Teachers will be there to help get students into cars and on their way. We will also have staff helping with the traffic. We ask for your help and support, please be patient as you slowly approach the area for student pick up. LOVELAND DRIVE - ONE WAY NORTH...GRADES K - 1ST & SIBLINGS Teachers will accompany all kindergarten and first grade students to Loveland Drive. All siblings will join them on Loveland Drive. Parents are to drive through and wait for teachers to help students get into the cars. Parents, we ask that you do NOT park on both sides of Loveland Drive or in private driveways, and that you never leave your car unattended to walk down to the playground. *Please do not enter the parking lot for drop off. At 8:20 am cones are put across the entrance to block traffic from entering. This allows staff to find a parking place and keeps the parking lot safe from moving traffic.
