Ripple Effect
The name of this blues and R&B album is dead-on. Kirsten Thien is “Delicious.” Her visage,
light complected with long curly red hair, showing just enough softness and cleavage to be
enticing, graces the front and the back of the CD When I opened the case the credits for all
thirteen tracks slowly unfolded. I immediately noticed the names of legends and heroes among
the liner notes. Ultimately, it is Thien’s songwriting and voice that determine the fate of this
album. Thien does not disappoint. She is provocative, sexy, playful and emotional. Her delivery
is gripping and gravelly, and her blues songwriting is world class. I’ve listened to this CD three
times today and I can’t get enough. I’m eating it up. Kirsten Thien is “Delicious.”

The old saying says you can’t judge a book by its cover. No such problem with Kirsten Thien’s
Delicious, her third recording. … It’s an accurate reflection of the slinky, sexy vibe that
positively permeates Delicious. … But she’s smart, and as the package would suggest, she
knows how to use what she’s got to excellent effect. Sex has always been an integral element in
the blues, of course, but Thien wisely keeps things seductively naughty without degenerating
into decadence. Thien is a savvy and astute artist who knows exactly what she’s doing and who’s
determined to make a musical mark.

…the NYC based musician has been honing her skills, and brings them all to bear on
"Delicious", her third album"Delicious" shows that Kirsten Thien is a real talent, and potentially

Delicious is a taste of the Blues that you will never forget. It’s like the warm apple pie your
grandmother made for you and even though she didn’t play a horn while you ate, it was still
good. Every track is somehow better than the one before it and leaves you suffering a huge let
down when the album ends after only 11 songs. But man alive, these 11 songs are fandamntastic!
The band Kirsten is playing with is tighter than a Japanese hotel room on every track and
compliment KT’s own guitar playing as well as her amazing voice. Her voice is clearly not the
result of “studio magic”. Thank whatever god you believe in that you’re not that “deaf dumb and
blind kid that sure played a mean pinball” and give your ears an early Christmas present. 5/5

BluesWax Rating: 8
… Kirsten Thien has talent and intelligence galore. She writes her own expressive lyrics and
sings them with as much wrenching emotion as possible. Thien sings beautifully, but she is also
a unique-sounding artist who will capture your attention and keep it. Thien also covers Ida Cox’s
“Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues” and Willie Dixon’s “I Ain’t Superstitious.” Her versions
sound sexier than I remember the songs to be. I promise you will be captivated, too. The album
is meticulously produced by Erik Boyd. When I mentioned to Thien that she did not have the
typical blues voice she replied, “Scotch and cigarettes will cure that.” I love this woman. You
will, too. Richard Ludmerer is a contributing editor to BluesWax. Talk to him below.

Blues & Rhythm Issue #255 - UK
This is the third album from this feisty-sounding singer and guitarist, and right from the first
notes of the strutting opener she exhibits a strong Stax/Memphis influence (there is some very
nice work from the horns on this set). The opener has guests Hubert Sumlin and the impressive
Arthur Neilson – DixieFrog watchers should be familiar with his name – trading hot guitar licks
too; Sumlin is even more impressive on the Chicago styled ‘Please Drive’, with an especially
breathy, sultry vocal from Kirsten. Elsewhere she tackles more Memphis derived sounds, a bit of
ultra-smooth soul, a little rock, funk and country, a different version of ‘I Ain’t Superstitious’
and the acoustic blues of Ida Cox’s ‘wild Women Don’t Have the Blues’. Overall this is an
impressive set – though not totally a blues set – and Kirsten is definitely a name to watch.

Brett Fleming, "Soul Stew", WEVL – Memphis, TN
Her strong voice, particularly soulful on many tracks, belies her age to a big degree, giving one
the feel that she's been at this for a while. I really like the fact that she wrote or co-wrote eight of
the eleven tracks on this disc and her originals are very well done with a wide variety of sounds
and styles. This would seemingly be a daunting task to accomplish but she pulls it off in fine
form. I really look forward to more "delicious" music from the voice of Kirsten Thien. ~Brett

Billtown Blue Notes
Sultry, sexy, rough as sandpaper yet smooth as silk, Kirsten Thien is a lot like a good, well-aged
scotch…smooth going down, leaving you with that warmth in your belly that once you've tasted
it, you'll never forget it. Delicious is just that…hotter than my uncle's used cars but real easy on
the ears. Then again that's a hard call to make, kind of like judging Memphis in May's Barbecue
Cook-Off…too many, too good to make a quick decision. Give it a listen and judge for yourself.
Take some hardcore blues, funk, soul, a touch of good old fashioned rock, blend well, kick back
and enjoy. Your biggest problem may be an uncontrollable urge to get up and dance. Chances are
real good that you won't be able to stop with just one listen.

Sultry, seductive, rocking, hollering, testifying, smoking hot- this CD runs the gamut of emotions
and showcases the talents of this fine young artist. The tracks are hot, the vocals are even more
smokin’ and the backing musicians know when restraint is best and when to let it all out. This is
a marvelous CD by a great singer and songwriter. Whether it be a stripped down track with just
one or two people backing her or a song with big horn arrangements, the music evokes rawness
and emotions. Thien’s third CD make me want to run and check out her first two. A most
highly recommended album!

“Baby, You Can Drive My Car”
In keeping with various photos on the packaging of Delicious that show her on the one hand
glamorized and offering an enticing barefoot lower leg and in a tougher stance clad in a black
halter top and alligator skin patterned jeans, leaning confidently on her Telecaster, the music on
her third album is both sultry in a penthouse kind of way and aggressive, heated, and smoldering
in a raw, earthy manner.
Indeed, though, Thien’s own songwriting is really what brings it all back home: the steady
grooving soul of a captivating love devotional… The past few years have seen the rise of a
powerful generation of young female blues and blues-inspired artists who do it all--sing, write,
play--and comprise a new and burgeoning second golden era who are making this music seem as
vital as ever, and more honest, less contrived than anything the pop mainstream has to offer.
With Delicious having nary a false note on it, Kirsten Thien ascends to the front ranks of that
generation--it, and she, will not be denied.

Remember when the labels put those stickers on the albums which said in large letters, “Play

doesn't deserve it. There are multiple reasons to dig the songs, from production (which is first
class) to sound (again, first class) to song choice (big thumbs up) to arrangements (as tasteful as
they get--- especially the brass) to musicianship (this is as professional as it gets, my friends)... I
could go on, but I will save you the time and effort. Whether you like the blues or not, Delicious

Juke Joint Soul
“Please Drive” jumps out as a possible Blues Music Award or Blues Blast Music Award “Song
of the Year” nominee, unmistakable blues and a sparkling fresh take on very familiar melodic
materials. It is a great song, a straight forward and not especially “vampy” or “campy” or
“ironical” assertion of female desire, a clear and honest statement still not common in 2010, and
so, a little edgy. The songwriting here is quite good. Thien has a gorgeous voice, and is a skilled
singer. This is not one of those athletic expositions so common in the blues today, where
someone shows off their singing, guitar playing, or harmonica playing to who knows what
purpose and limited effect. When Thien shouts there is perfect motivation in the lyrics, tempo,
melody; when she “coos” you know exactly why. When Thien talks to you, you feel talked to.
Thien’s Delicious really is shiny and alluring.

Kirsten Thien has that definitive "wild streak" in her that was shared by the fiercely-independent
blues women of past generations. Her third overall release is entitled "Delicious, " and it is just
that-thirteen cuts of which eight she had a hand in writing either whole or in part, showing off a
mature look at life, love and how to deal with it. She possesses a great set of pipes, and puts
them to the test on this set. Purring, growling, whispering and howling, she uses her vocals to
reach out and grab you on songs that range from STAX-flavored soul, funky jazz, to straight
acoustic blues. Kirsten Thien shows the blues world that there is still a place for a headstrong,
ebullient, "wild woman" with a take-no-prisoners attitude in her singing and writing. For a
"Delicious" good time, check out this album today!

Sex, God and Rock ‘n Roll
With her new release Kirsten has progressed from an interesting newcomer to a fully fledged,
country-soul diva of enormous, world class talent, presence and quality. I have not heard a white
singer as good as this for many a year. I honestly place her in the same class as Maria McKee
and Maggie Bell, and those of you who have been following my blog for a while will know that
my compliments don't come any higher than that when it comes to singers. "Delicious" mixes the
blues, soul and country seamlessly and should appeal to fans of all three genres. It certainly
appealed to me and on the first listen. But you must decide for yourself, although I'll be

Thien can make the musical pot come to a boil. And just watch it boil over onto the burner! This
disc cooks and serves up some mighty tasty soulful tunes and lays down a mean guitar lick here
and there. This lady’s the full package! But if there is any one point that is going to draw new

"Delicious" is a typical record for singing ladies, where the rhythm & blues industry is missing.
By "normal" I mean a specific approach to composing and recording records. The idea is that
everything is designed to highlight the possibility of vocal artist. Do not forget also that built
here largely on the melodies, and many of them memorable. A prominent part of the composition
of the copyright works of the artist, and several covers of blues will do with certainty, although a
small degree, satisfy purystom. 7 / 10

Kirsten has been compared by some to Bonnie Raitt in her approach to her music; but, after
listening to this album I am more inclined to think along the lines of the fiery confident,
sensually swaggering raunchiness of Tina Turner. The eleven numbers on the album are as
diverse as they are satisfying and they impressively display Kirsten’s talents, not only in her
obvious writing skills, but also her capability in choosing the right number and how to interpret it

Not Just Another Redheaded Blues Singer
BluesWax Rating: 9
By mandate it seems that every white woman in the blues genre is compared to Bonnie Raitt.
While the yardstick is immense, the expectation has become a cliché. On her third album,
Delicious, Kirsten Thien, another redheaded blues woman, proffers an exceptional album that
has immense commercial potential.
The production, playing, and vocal lines are more suburban than urban, but the textures and
performances make for a world-class blues album. This is a very solid, immediately enjoyable
album that a wide base of blues fans should readily embrace. This album is at least six songs
deep for radio airplay. If one is able to judge a book by its cover, or in this case a compact disc,
this is a well-thought-out, emotionally pure effort that shows the blues in potentially its most
viable resurgence. Thien is an artist worth watching closely.

Jump blues chanteuse Kirsten Thien’s third album starts with a fiery blast of brass. It’s a hot first
taste of an album memorable for being a tribute to love and lust. Aurally these songs taste good
but don’t be surprised if you have hickies on your ears after listening. Should get the cat on a hot
tin roof award of the year for the vocals on this burner. Lyrics drip lasciviously from Thien’s lips
as the rhythm guitar miraculously grows claws. Actually, you get a feel for Delicious’ heat even
before the first note. Thien’s tastefully erotic cover photo features the attractive young woman in
purple passion lingerie. Delicious is scrumptious ear candy and perfect boudoir soundtrack.

Blinded By Sound (Josh Hathaway)
Her voice conveys so much with so little effort at its best. She mixes equal parts charm,
sweetness, and sensuality while exuding charm, charisma, and kindness. Delicious succeeds as
much on charisma as it does songs. There is something immensely likable about the sum that
exceeds the impact of what these individual parts should add up to. She's a gifted singer with
enough writing know-how for part of a record but might do well to team with other writers to
generate enough material for an entire album. The results are indeed delicious when all the
ingredients are mixed but her most satisfying meal lies ahead of her.

I love music that gets me up and dancing from the first note. That’s exactly what you get with
Kirsten Thien’s Delicious. Aside from the confident delivery of well-written songs, the artful
arrangement of each tune builds and rests and builds and rests perfectly. Sexy and soulful, bold
and sassy, intimate and breathtaking at all the right places, you just can’t ask for anything better.
Kirsten Thien knows what she’s doing. She puts everything she has into every song, knowing
when and where and what to emphasize and for how long.
My guess is she pulls this off expertly during live performances, resulting in plenty of men
swooning after her, women taking copious notes, and everyone sexually charged and ready to go.
I know there are bound to be too many reviewers out there who are going to be quick to jump up
and compare her to known female performers. I refuse to be one of them. I hear a few influences,
of course, but mostly what I hear is a vibrant woman who’s singing from way down deep within
her soul. She understands the power of chemistry and she shares what she knows, not needing to
rely on whether or not her voice occasionally sounds like someone else. Thien brings her own
charms and talents to the table and serves up an ample and Delicious bounty of her own making.
Crisp, sweet, with enough bite, Delicious is the blues album we’ve all been waiting for. That it
comes from a woman hardly seems the point, but it is worth mentioning as in this day and age,
very few women are able to make such an outstanding first impression without relying heavily
on building a "sounds just like" or "covers the material of" disc. If there’s a serious misstep
anywhere on the entire album, I’m not hearing it.
I’m now curious enough to check out Kirsten Thien’s first and second efforts, She Really Is and
Y ou’ve Got Me, but mostly I’m already looking forward to her next release and the opportunity
to see her perform in person.

Indeed, his steamy blues licks fuel "Please Drive," my favorite track on the album, but Thien's

Either way, she sings with attitude and I'm mighty glad I saw Sumlin's name in the credits.
