training – these form the basis of our
corporate philosophy, a philosophy
which relies on traditional values and
is founded on moral and ethical principles. Our approach is characterized
by positive thinking, acceptance of
responsibility by each individual
employee and respect, not only for
human dignity and welfare but for the
environment too, as part of Creation.

Progress based on tradition
"There is no past without the future"
Egon Fridell

For more than 100 years now, success in motor-racing has
meant success for SCHERDEL valve springs. Here the
winners of the 1914 French Grand Prix with their Mercedes
racing cars.
ince the Company's founding in
1890 SCHERDEL has always
demonstrated an innovative approach,
committed to progress. Now, as in the
past, great importance is attached to
the use of new technologies, which are
regarded as an opportunity for growth
and rationalization. As early as 1915
SCHERDEL was using automatic
machines for the manufacture of
springs. The following are just a few
examples of the Company's traditionally progressive attitude: the first use
of the shot-peening process in Europe
in 1936 to improve the service life of
engineering springs; the introduction of
assembly-line production for compression springs in 1943; the development
of the SCHERDEL "Ultra" process in
1956 as a solution to thermal problems
relating to valve and clutch springs;
and the introduction of stress-optimized production at the end of the
1980s. This visionary approach has
always been an outstanding feature of
the SCHERDEL Management – starting with the Company's founder,
Sigmund Scherdel, followed by his
sons Max and Rudi Scherdel, and now
the present head of the Company,
Walter Bach, under whose management the Group's research and development activities are continuously
being extended, in accordance with
the corporate motto: "Progress based
on tradition".

hink globally – act locally: today,
true to this motto and with 26
locations worldwide, the SCHERDEL
Group can always provide its clients
with a locally based service. With
the single European market in mind,
the course was set at the end of the
1980s for the successful internationalization of the Company. This policy of
expansion began with the take-over of
existing firms in France and Portugal.
Following German reunification, an
important member joined the Group –
the Marienberg spring-production factory in Saxony. SCHERDEL then
looked towards Eastern Europe, and
companies were founded in the Czech
Republic, Slovakia and Poland. The
activities in relation to new locations
have focused on the USA, Brazil,
Mexico and the growth market Asia,
the emphasis being on China.
SCHERDEL Group Managing Director,
Walter Bach, has declared that, in
addition to the internationalization
of Company locations, future Group
policy will focus on enhanced quality
and efficiency.

n relation to the manufacture of
engineering springs and the expertise that this requires, the SCHERDEL
Group has led the field for more than
100 years now. Here, engineering
springs are often used to solve problems which demand the highest technical standards. The valve spring, for
example, is a small but nevertheless
highly stressed component for piston
engines. Its quality is crucial to the
service life of an engine. Particularly in
relation to the design and manufacture
of valve springs, SCHERDEL possesses outstanding know-how and many
years of experience. After all, the
world's first diesel engine was
equipped with SCHERDEL valve
springs. However, engineering springs
are not only used in the manufacture
of motor vehicles (e.g. for gears, ABS,
fuel injection, carburettors, braking
systems), but also in the building and
furniture industries, in measuring and
control technology, in the manufacture
of various types of appliances, and in
electrical engineering and electronics
(e.g. switches). In addition to the valve
springs already mentioned, the range
of products includes compression
springs, tension springs, disk springs,
torsion springs, retractor springs, constant force springs, spiral springs,
sleeve springs and also spring elements for oil distribution rings.
Engineering springs are the invisible
helpers and problem-solvers in a modern world which would certainly be less
mobile without them.

"For the whole must be prior to the part"
Aristotle

CHERDEL'S engineers and
development technicians always
have the whole product in view when
they play their part in enhancing the
standard of comfort and convenience
in modern vehicles. Criteria such as
safety, weight reduction and functionality are also of prime importance in the
manufacture of metal structures for
vehicle seating. Often enough it is in
assembly components that the engineering spring – one of the
SCHERDEL Group's core products –
really comes into its own. No matter
whether it's a question of adjusting and
compensating components with spiral
springs, switch systems, or mechanisms for adjusting and actuating
systems: in the development and
manufacture of these products the
emphasis is on cost optimization, long
service life and reliability. Today, in
close co-operation with the automotive
industry, the ideas for tomorrow's
vehicle components take shape.

f course SCHERDEL's stampings
and shaped components are
flexible problem-solvers, but when it
comes to the crunch they can take any
amount of punishment. There are
innumerable products in this field: wire
rings for fastening or for use as circlips, contact elements and blanks,
terminal housings for electric motors,
retaining elements for windshield
wipers, contact components for vehicle-seat heating systems, hinge
elements or shielding plates and
retaining belts, to mention but a few
items from the extensive production
program. In the manufacture of stampings and shaped components, precision is particularly necessary when
working with material thicknesses
down to 0.06 millimeters. These components have a wide range of applications and an equally impressive range
of customers from widely varying
fields: the automobile and automotiveparts industries, manufacturers of
household, electrical, sports and
leisure articles, or the furniture industry.

Connection technology
"The greater a thing's unity, the more perfect its goodness and effectiveness"
St. Thomas Aquinas

f it's a question of guaranteeing reliable connections in the field of automotive engineering, then hose clamps
made by SCHERDEL are the answer.
Whenever tube and socket connections must be perfectly sealed to ensure the reliable functioning of technical components, then dependable,
maintenance-free hose clamps provide
the ideal solution. Since they are selfadjusting, they adapt to varying environmental conditions and ensure
complete functional adherence despite
the constantly changing service conditions in a motor vehicle. In order to be
able to offer all its customers the
greatest possible expertise in the fields
of development and production,
SCHERDEL, as a leading producer of
coil springs, founded a joint venture
under the name of TOGO SCHERDEL
with the Japanese Togo Seisakusyo
Group, which is the market leader in
the field of hose clamps. Thanks to the
combined know-how available in this
partnership, they can produce standard
and space-saving hose clamps, as well
as pretensioned and double hose
clamps with outstanding design-related
advantages and enhanced efficiency.
These products are particularly suitable
for use in coolant circulation systems,
servo systems, fuel systems, chargeair and air-intake systems or for direct
injection processes under variable
overpressure or vacuum conditions.

"It is through the laying of foundations that greatness of any
kind achieves lasting fame"
W
henever product development
work involves laying the foundations of new systems and components,
then SCHERDEL's Assembly
Technology Division can provide the
necessary expertise right from the
start. No need for the customer to get
involved in development and assembly
work or logistics. Instead, he can order
individual parts or complete components ready to be installed, in small
lots or large numbers, as required. The
careful co-ordination of a wide variety
of materials and possible coatings,
combined with cost-effective assembly
concepts, ensures an optimum service.
Whether it's a question of manual work
or fully automatic series production in
three shifts, continuous quality checks
guarantee that even the most stringent
customer requirements are satisfied.
The range of products made by the
Assembly Technology Division includes spring packs for automatic transmission, spring supports for vehicle
tailgates, return springs for variable
valve-train systems in engines or, for
example, pre-assembled tambour door
systems with integrated torsion springs
for the furniture industry.

achines and systems would
be of little value if they didn't
originate from some ingenious idea,
the realization of which opens up new
possibilities, reduces costs, rationalizes work processes or even improves
conditions at the workplace – by
reducing noise, for example. Working
at top speed and with total precision,
the CNC milling machines produced by
the SCHERDEL Group can perform
any task in the field of wood, plastics,
aluminium and metal working. Using
movable portal machines or mobile
supporting tables, workpieces and
semi-finished products can be given
careful 5-axis treatment from start to
finish, with only one initial clamping
procedure. The range of products
also includes coordinate and singleaxis tables, tool magazines and toolhandling systems, pallet-exchange
systems and machine housings.
SCHERDEL's special wire-working
machines rank among the top
products in their segment of the
market. For projects involving the
modernisation of existing heavy
machines, committed engineers and
technicians work out individual solutions. Here, state-of-the-art production
techniques and calculation methods
guarantee that today's machines will
be able to meet tomorrow's challenge.

"The way is the goal"
Buddhist maxim
H
ow can we ensure that the way
to our goal is as fast, as accurate
and as smooth as possible, so that in
the case of repetitive handling operations no variations or deviations occur?
Finding an answer to this question
resulted in a world patent: the
ZARIAN®-Z2 drive principle, a
SCHERDEL Group invention consisting of a toothed belt which rolls on a
toothed rack mounted parallel to a
guide mechanism. This invention provides the basis for linear modules and
multi-axis systems, skilfully combined
with ingenious control techniques and
peripheral devices such as grippers.
This not only optimizes workstation
procedures but also relieves staff of
the task of carrying or lifting heavy
loads. The system uses portal loaders
which can handle heavy components
and perform difficult lifting operations
with the greatest of ease. Thanks to
modern, automatic assembly equipment, production time can be reduced
considerably – another cost-saving
advantage. The field of automation
and control technology also includes
the development of all-in-one solutions
comprising the construction of individual special-purpose machines with
corresponding software development
for SPC and CNC control systems
including the construction of control
cabinets.

n tool-making SCHERDEL aims to
meet the highest standards. Here,
inspiration and creativity, combined
with careful planning and the expertise
to know what is technically feasible,
provide the basis for the design and
manufacture of highly complex tools.
For this work, the SCHERDEL Group
can call on the experience of a highly
committed staff and state-of-the-art
technologies: modern CAD equipment
with online data transfer to the customer is used for the production of
3-D models. In the developers' network
this 3-D data generates the technology
programs for controlling the machining
process. The DNC data-networked
machinery includes efficient facilities
for wire-EDM and NC three-axis and
five-axis machining, as well as HSC
milling machines for high-speed cutting, or pressing and stamping
machines able to exert a pressure of
up to 600 tonnes. SCHERDEL's
expertise is also evident in the manufacture of punching, bending and
stamping tools, jigs and fixtures, reference gauges, follow-on composite
tools and transfer tools, isostatic
pressing tools and peripheral equipment for automatic handling machines.
Here, SCHERDEL has set standards
of quality and precision which are hard
to beat.

B
y applying special coatings to
alter the surface finish of technical components, corrosion can be
prevented and their service life can be
considerably enhanced. However, the
characteristics of the material of which
the parts are made can also be modified in such a way as to produce functional advantages: for example frictional resistance can be reduced, or
protection can be provided against
acids, alkalis and contact corrosion. In
the field of surface finishing, the
SCHERDEL Group not only has the
necessary know-how but state-of-theart technology as well: the equipment
includes a computer-controlled zincphosphating unit which also sets stan-
dards in relation to environmental protection, a TULZ installation for coating
parts with complicated geometry,
standard Delta Tone and Delta Seal
installations, modern spraying equipment, as well as powder-coating and
electro-dip-coat (KTL) installations.
In the central laboratory there is a
scanning electron microscope for
documenting layer formation. The
scientists' work also includes quality
assurance involving the preparation
and examination of metallographic
sections and the use of equipment for
salt-spray, Kesternich and damp-heat
testing procedures.
