Pashley Manor Gardens
PASHLEY MANOR GARDENS ‘One of the finest gardens in England’ Group Booking Information 2014 ‘One of the finest gardens in England’ Pashley offers a sumptuous blend of romantic landscaping, imaginative plantings and fine old trees, fountains, springs and large ponds. Whatever month you choose to visit there is something to delight the senses. Through April to May bluebells carpet the woodland and there are thousands of tulips throughout the gardens. June is fragrant with roses while in July the scent of sweet peas and lilies begin to perfume the air. Summer bedding plants continue through into August, and then the herbaceous borders come into their own. We recommend a minimum of 2 hours to visit the Gardens (the house is not open to the public), however, most groups stay longer than this, enjoying the delicious lunches and teas available from our Café. You can also go on to visit another nearby attraction by booking one of our joint tours—see below. OPENING TIMES 1st April to 30th September 2014, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Bank Holiday Mondays and Special Event Days, 11am ‐ 5pm. GROUP ADMISSION RATES (FOR 15+) Normal open days—inc. Sculpture in Particular (24—31 May, every day), Roses, Raspberries & Radishes (10—21 June, every day) and Lily Time (through July & August on normal open days) £ 9.00 per head Tulip Festival (23 April every day to 5 May) £10.00 per head Summer Plant, Garden & Produce Fair (29 June)/Sussex Guild Craft Show (23‐25 Aug.) £ 8.00 per head By special arrangement, we are sometimes able to open early for Groups wishing to arrive before 11am. There is a £1.00 surcharge per head for this. THE GARDEN ROOM CAFÉ Pashley prides itself on providing delicious, locally sourced and homemade food. As well as coming to see the beautiful gardens groups should ‘allow time to sample the fabulous homemade food and warm hospitality at arguably the best garden café in the county, much of which is sourced from the abundant kitchen garden’ (Leigh Clapp in ‘Sussex Life’ magazine). Visitors can enjoy their refreshments in the café, on the terrace or in the courtyard. The Café operates a buffet style service and it would be very helpful to know if your group requires morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea prior to your visit. We can offer pre‐paid set menus for groups but it is not compulsory for groups to pre‐book refreshments in this way; it is often nicer for visitors to be able to choose from the buffet themselves. Please note that on Special Event Days the café operates with a slightly simplified menu so set menus are not available. GIFT SHOP, PLANT SALES AND SCULPTURE AND ART EXHIBITIONS The Gift Shop caters for every taste; from our souvenir guidebook, postcards and local honey to hand painted ceramics and tapestry cushions. A selection of plants and shrubs, many of which grow at Pashley, are available for purchase. There is an exhibition of Botanical/Floral paintings in the Garden Room Café and an exhibition of Sculpture in the gardens — most pieces are for sale. CONDUCTED TOURS Tours of the Garden led by either the Owner, James Sellick, or the Head Gardener, Keith Boylett, may be arranged. The tours last 1‐1½ hours. The cost for up to 25 people is £125, plus Admission Fee ‐ for over 25 people an extra £4.50 is charged for each additional person (up to a maximum of 35 per tour). Alternatively, a short introductory talk can be arranged which lasts 20 minutes at a cost of £35 for up to 35 people. This talk gives a brief history of both Pashley Manor and the gardens. DISABLED VISITORS Disabled visitors are made most welcome. The gardens are only partially accessible ‐ the formal gardens, terrace, gift shop and cafe are all accessible but the steeper gravel paths towards the woodland and behind the ponds are difficult to navigate. Due to the sloping nature of the garden, and the gravel/grass paths throughout, motorised wheelchairs are advised or a strong person to push! We advise you to telephone before visiting so that we may give you full details of access to ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience. For groups of disabled visitors we recommend each disabled visitor brings a companion as distances within the garden can be tiring. We have two wheelchairs (non‐motorised) which we loan (they must be pre‐booked) and special lavatory facilities. PICNICS Picnics may be taken in the Car Park field where there are a few picnic tables and benches. We regret picnics may not be taken in the Gardens. Please ensure you take all of your litter home with you. PARKING AND COACH DRIVERS Parking is available for up to 5 coaches (and there is ample parking for cars). Coach drivers enter the Gardens free of charge, and will be presented with a refreshment voucher at the Reception/Gift Shop. We can send a car up to the coach park to bring less able visitors to the garden entrance if requested—please let us know before your visit, if possible, and/or on arrival let the reception team know if any transport to/from the coach park is required. BOOKING PROCEDURE AND PAYMENT Sadly, we have experienced late cancellations in the past, which have cost us money, therefore we have reluctantly had to impose a £50.00 booking charge which is refundable in the event of cancellations notified to us more than 14 days before the visit (see note below for booking charges during the Tulip Festival). When you have settled on a provisional date for your visit, would you kindly telephone to check that we have availability on your chosen date before sending your booking form and deposit. Should you wish to send a coach at the last moment you are always welcome to telephone and we will do our very best to fit you in. Please note for visits during a Special Event: As it can be very busy on Special Event days, and the number of groups we are able to take is restricted, early booking is recommended. For the Tulip Festival we have occasionally had to turn away bookings, so we will require a £100 deposit per coach/ group to secure a booking. This deposit is non‐refundable. Upon receipt of your group booking form we will send a letter of confirmation and a receipt to present on the day of your visit. The balance can be paid on the day of the visit by cheque, cash or card. The Organiser must collect entrance money before the visit and present one payment on arrival. Important Notice—We regret that we can accept no liability for any accident, loss or damage to persons or property on the estate. Add a trip to another local attraction to complement your visit to the gardens at Pashley and make a full day out. Book both attractions with Pashley—just one booking form to fill in and one deposit to pay to arrange your whole day in this beautiful area of the south east. In 2014 Pashley is offering joint tours with four other attractions: Romantic and Historic Sissinghurst and Pashley Why not combine your trip to Pashley with a visit to Sissinghurst Castle and Garden? The famous garden at Sissinghurst was created in the 1930s by the diplomat Harold Nicolson and his poet wife, Vita Sackville‐West. Drawn to the ruins of the Elizabethan courtyard house which was once owned by Vita’s ancestors, Harold and Vita were inspired by the farmland around the house and the opportunities that the empty plot posed. Harold and Vita quickly created a juxtaposition to the working farm around them, with the elegance of the classical lines favoured by Harold and the romanticism of Vita’s flamboyant use and profusion of colour and planting. Refreshments, not included in the price, can be enjoyed in Pashley’s Garden Room Café or in Sissinghurst’s Granary restaurant (refreshments at Sissinghurst must be pre‐booked). £18.90* per person, or £9.00* for members of the National Trust. Tradition and Innovation in One Day Begin your day in the traditional splendour of the gardens at Pashley followed by lunch (not included in the price) and then on to Great Dixter House and Gardens. Great Dixter was the family home of the late Christopher Lloyd, who devoted his lifetime to creating one of the most experimental, exciting and innovative gardens. Incorporating many medieval buildings, the gardens surround the house each complementing the other. From yew topiary, carpets of meadow flowers, the colourful tapestry of mixed borders (including the famous Long Border), ponds and the exuberant Exotic Gardens, there is much to see. £18.00* per person. A Day Out for Discerning Garden Lovers Enjoy the gardens at Pashley in the morning followed by lunch (not included in the price) and then go on to Merriments Gardens in the afternoon. This is a unique combination of a garden, large plant nursery, garden shop and wild bird care centre. Merriments Gardens covers 4 acres and has deep sweeping borders with a variety of different plants throughout the seasons; the hot border is at its most dramatic in high summer with a vast panoply of richly coloured plants. The nursery grows an extensive range of perennials, shrubs and trees, priding itself on a wonderful selection of unusual plants, many of which can be seen growing in the garden. £14.50* per person. Garden Treasures and Musical Pleasures Make a day out in the area by adding a trip to Finchcocks Musical Museum to your visit to Pashley. At Finchcocks your visit will start with a brief history of the Georgian Manor house. Then, after free time to explore the collection of over 100 period keyboard instruments, the peaceful garden and the exhibition on pleasure gardens, you can enjoy a recital from owner and concert pianist Richard Burnett or one of his musical team. Morning, lunch and afternoon refreshments can be enjoyed in Pashleyʹs Garden Room Café with terrace or at Finchcocks Cellar Restaurant ‐ refreshments at Finchcocks must be pre‐booked (refreshments not included in the price). £20* per person, for groups of 20+ only. * Please note there are no group concessions during the Tulip Festival, please add £1.00 to the quoted price for this time. Most groups prefer to choose from our tempting buffet selection on an individual basis; we can offer pre‐paid refreshments for groups if required, see below, but it is not compulsory for groups to pre‐book refreshments in this way. If you would like to book refreshments for your group please fill in the Group Catering Order Form with your choices. You will need to pay for the food on arrival as one payment with your entrance fee, your group members will then be given vouchers to hand in at the café. A variety of hot and cold beverages, and wines and beers, are available for your group to purchase individually in the café all day from 11am to 5pm.
