From the Principal’s Desk
Last month I had the pleasure of
attending the whole school camp at Point
Walter. I was so impressed with our
students and the level of teamwork,
cooperation and caring they demonstrated
for each other. It was amazing to watch
students (and staff!) on the flying fox and
crate climb really challenging themselves
to participate in these dare devil feats!
Congratulations to Jayden Langlois and his
Mum Colleen who both soared down the
flying fox!
Evening activities included designing and
making outfits out of toilet paper, a pop
quiz and paper challenge game- pictures
available on our website. The gentle stroll
around this lovely water front campsite
was a wonderful finish to our time at Point
Walter.
On behalf of the students, I wish to
thank all the staff who attended as well
as those who stayed back at site to ferry
students to camp or workplace. Without
you such a fun and enjoyable camp would
not have been possible. Parents, I hope
your children were suitably tired from all
the activities and ready for our cadet
camps in semester 2!

Cadets have been gearing up for
camp this term, writing their own
itineraries and camp lists of things
to take with them. Camp it is an
exciting time for students who have
worked hard towards it across their
classes, as well as demonstrating
consistent behaviour.
Earlier this term the cadets YEAR 11
had an all day excursion to the
Army Museum in Fremantle and
the YEAR 12 , visited the Air force
Museum in Bullcreek, before both
year groups headed to the
Fremantle War Memorial on
Memorial Hill for lunch and a tour
of the grounds.
Cadets
I was extremely impressed with
student behaviour on this
excursion and look forward to
more of the same at camp.
In the weeks after camp, YEAR 11s
will be refreshing first aid as well
as looking at navigation and bush
survival, including some knot tying
and radio work.
The YEAR 12s will be revisiting the
recreational skipper’s ticket and
then progressing on with their fire
management course, which they
will complete later into Term 3.

Vet-Retail
Students have been developing
their understanding of retail and
the different skills needed to
succeed within the industry. They
have specifically looked at safety
practices in the workplace,
including hazards and OHS issues;
creating and maintain a display;
advice on products and services
and merchandising products.
These topics will be reinforced
through their work placements in
workplace learning as well as a
number of retail enterprise days
based upon a sausage sizzle
business.
All students have really got into
the sausage sizzle business this
term, creating a name for the
business ‘Sausage Sizzle Frenzy’, as
well as creating their own
individual name badges. For all
their hard work students are
looking forward to a reward day
later in the term, great work folks!

WORKSHOP
Mr Krispler, Mathew and Kyle ready for
their customers
Students are continuing with their
projects started in first term, planter boxes or coffee table. When
the students are working on their
individual project, they are
encouraged to use all the machines
as independently as possible, with
staff ready to assist when necessary.
It has been very rewarding,, that so
many students are remembering to
wear their safety boots and glasses,
without the need to be reminded.

I look forward to seeing the
completed projects.
The Workshop Team have been
preparing and setting up the metal
work stations within the workshop. I
would like to thank Mr Bates and Mr
Farbey (from JTC) for their donation
of materials and time
in helping us prepare
for metalwork.

Health
It has been fantastic to see the students
getting actively involved with our health
program. We have been focusing on Smoking,
Drug and Alcohol awareness, paying
particular attention to the effects these
habits and addictions have on their bodies.
The school has been lucky enough to borrow
some amazing resources and students were
able to see simulations of what smoking can
do to your lungs, the effects on their mouth,
as well as some rather graphic images of
unhealthy side effects involving their limbs.
A class quiz was held and students did a
fantastic job answering most of the
questions correctly. The quiz wheel had
numbers 1 through to 100, and Jade was
lucky enough to score bonus points for her
team by landing on 100.
It was interesting to see how they managed with
the differences in their recorded times .whilst
wearing the goggles. Many students openly
discussed, both in and out of class their feelings
and linked their protective behaviour lessons into
this activity.
Some students comments were:
Rhesa: “I feel really dizzy, I don‟t feel safe at
all, like I‟m going to fall over.”
Jade: “It was a lot harder. I thought it would be
easy.”
Kyle: “It makes what you see look strange, it also
gives you weird eyes. Is this what I look like
when I‟m drunk?”
Emily: “The longer I have them on, the easier it
is to do things”
QUESTION: What are some side effects of
smoking?
A) Lung Cancer
B)
Smelly Breath
C)
Rotten Teeth
D) Increased Ageing
E) All of the above
ANSWER: E – smoking has many effects, not
just for the person choosing to smoke. This
can also affect others around them as well.
Drug and Alcohol awareness has been very
interactive and students walked out of each
lesson having lots of new information.
I think the most engaging activity we have
completed so far this year was with the use
of the „Drunk Goggles‟. Students were asked
to complete a number of tasks such as
walking along the line, throwing a ball and
running to collect it, picking up a variety of
different objects with one hand and using
the telephone to make a phone call.

Duncan Sanders Literacy
We have had a very busy start to
the year in Literacy. The 1A group
have continued working on the
theme “Who Am I?” This course
required them to write an
autobiography about either
themselves or a fictional character.
All students put in a fantastic effort
(with thanks to our awesome EA’s
for their assistance). Standout
essays were produced by Kyle,
Matthew, Georgia and Annaleigh.
All submitted assignments
impressed a member of the JTC
English staff who cross marked the
work – Well Done!! The 1A class
have now moved onto viewing and
analysing the movie 50 First Dates.
The English Foundation classes
are busy preparing their
PowerPoint presentations
focusing on rules and codes of
conduct around the school. Their
preparation has included
identifying rules and codes of
conduct, and taking photos of
signs that represented these (i.e.
no smoking, no parking etc.). We
are looking forward to these
presentations in the next couple
of weeks..
Reading Mary Shelley’s
Frankenstein, has been a hit with
all groups.
The students have been keen to
join in the reading and complete
the review questions. A Special
Fun Day is being planned for those
Literacy students who have
worked hard and appropriately
throughout Terms 1 and 2. This
day will include viewing the latest
Frankenstein movie, as well as
other fun activities

NUMERACY
The classes have been extremely
busy with the functional maths
group using their maths skills of
weighing and measuring, using time
and counting to set up Breakfast
Club. We are also going shopping on
alternate Tuesdays, using money
skills to work out change and
comparing value for money. The
other two groups are looking at
time, how to read Transperth
timetables, changing analogue to
digital and vice versa and using 24
hour clocks. The 1AMAT students
are wowing the teachers with their
knowledge and commitment to
learning. All groups are gaining
confidence within their areas of
study.

developing. The staff are
also seeing students‟
confidence and

improving. We have had a
fantastic second term.

Life Skills
This term we are cooking!! Some of the things that we
have made so far include minestrone soup and macaroni
cheese – and it wasn‟t from a packet! Students are
becoming increasingly OSH aware in the kitchen, following
hygiene regulations and becoming aware of the dangers
around equipment, specially knives. If students would like
to bring their food home they need to bring a container
into school.

It has been great to see students
working exceptionally well at their
work places. Feedback from
employers has been very positive.
Students have been using their
initiative to put stock away and
keep their workplace clean and safe.
Some have also used good
communication skills to answer
customer questions.
In class we have been working on
creating and editing our resumes.
Some students experienced
difficulties while putting in their
details on the resume, however, it is
a work in progress. We refer to
their WPL log books, it is important
that as much information as
possible is entered each week.
We have looked at jobs advertised
on the Seek website, and in the
coming weeks we are going to start
practicing interview techniques.

ART NEWSLETTER TERM 2 2014
Lots of energy has been flowing into the
students‟ music performances for the end
of the term. The performances are short
3 to 5 minute presentations about a
favourite song or musician that they have
Brendan painting to music
been researching, developing a costume
and to which they have been practicing a
rhythmic response by playing percussion
instruments or clapping and making simple
body movements. It has been challenging
work and has given students the
opportunity to share the music they like.
Students have also been challenged to
think about why they like the music they
do and to understand the lyrics and
