14 Nights Wewak to Darwin including Solar Eclipse - Departs
04 March 2016.
Both dates end in Darwin on March 18, 2016.
FEB 23: Alotau - Papua New Guinea
“Enjoy the
Captain's
Welcome Drinks
before sitting
down to the first
of many delicious
dinners”
This morning join our private jet in Cairns for the short flight to
Alotau (additional expense). After boarding Oceanic Discoverer
at 3:00pm we leave Alotau on the start of our New Guinea Circle adventure. Take the opportunity to explore your new home
for the next 24 nights. Enjoy the Captain's Welcome Drinks before sitting down to the first of many delicious dinners.
FEB 24: Dobu and Fergusson Islands - PNG
Welcoming to the Islands
We are greeted by a flotilla of canoes as we approach the
Dobu anchorage. Our Guest Lecturers will share with you the
history of the Kula Ring where Dobu Island was a pivotal link
between the north and south Kula trade routes. Meet the local

FEB 25: Trobriands and Kuiawa - Papua New Guinea
Historically known as the 'Islands of Love' the Trobriands offer a
glimpse of traditional culture largely unspoiled by outside influence. On the island of Kuiawa witness traditional Trobriand
dance performed by the colorfully costumed locals.
FEB 26: Tufi Fjords - Papua New Guinea
Today enjoy a true highlight as we discover the scenic beauty
of the rarely visited Tufi Fjords. Similar to Nordic fjords and
featuring 25 individual canyons with sheer basalt cliffs, these
are the only fjords in Papua New Guinea and offer a wealth of
sightseeing opportunities. Soak up the spectacular views as
we cruise close to the towering cliffs before boarding Xplorer
to travel ashore to meet the friendly locals. Then, enjoy the
opportunity to discover the region's numerous white sandy
beaches, take a leisurely swim and snorkel or kayak over
spectacular fringing reefs.
FEB 27: Buna's WWII History - Papua New Guinea
Today we commemorate one of the most important battles of
WWII in the Pacific as we visit the coastal village of Buna.
Forming the main Japanese base during their advance across
the Kokoda Track during World War II, it was in Buna that the
Japanese made their last stand after their withdrawal following the Kokoda campaign. By November 1942 more than
6,000 Japanese troops were dug-in in the Buna-Gona area,
using the rugged terrain to great effect to conceal hundreds of
machine gun bunkers and trenches. A combined Australian
and US force launched a series of bloody attacks against the
Japanese defenders, wrenching the ground from them inch-by
-inch. By January 1943 more than 22,000 men had been
killed or wounded on both sides, a casualty rate that makes
the Buna-Gona campaign one of the bloodiest of the entire
Pacific War. Visit the site of the old Buna Government Station
and Australian and US memorials paying tribute to the men
who died here.

MAR 10: Wayag Island and Raja Ampat West Papua, Indonesia
Hint: bring a flash drive
or memory card to share
underwater photos.
Savor a day of exploration on Wayag Island, one of the famed
'Four Kings' of the Raja Ampat region. Our day starts with a
discovery of the lagoon's white sand beaches and a magical
maze of limestone karst 'gumdrop' islands. There will also be
ample opportunity for a full range of in-water activities. The
islands are adorned with thousands of pitcher plants and colorful orchids and we'll spend the remainder of the day exploring. For the more energetic there may be an opportunity to
climb Pindito Peak where the reward is breathtaking views
over the island and its spectacular lagoon
MAR 11: Pulau Gam and Kaibui Bay West Papua, Indonesia
“The farm
produces pearls of
the finest quality”
Awaken as we cruise the Dampier Straits, named in honor of
famed explorer William Dampier. Travelling ashore to Pulau
Gam, a local Papuan guide will join us on a walk through the
shady forests around Sawingrai village. Our guide's local
knowledge will hopefully allow us to catch a glimpse of one of
nature's finest creations, the ethereal Red Bird of Paradise.
This afternoon join a guided tour of the South Seas Pearl Farm,
our local host taking us through the entire propagation and cultivation process. The farm produces pearls of the finest quality,
and you may even wish to purchase an incredible souvenir produced in these very waters.
MAR 12: Hidden Bay - West Papua, Indonesia
Another greeting by the natives.
Page 12
The narrow entrance to the Hidden Bay, which is located on
Gam Island, is easy to overlook and visits from cruise ships
are rare. Aboard Xplorer we'll travel through the long, narrow
channel which splits into two picturesque bays featuring a
maze of small rock islands. An extremely scenic and atmospheric place to explore, there will be ample time to kayak,
enjoy glass bottom boat tours over the coral reefs, snorkel
and SCUBA dive and join our expedition staff on a guided nature walk. This afternoon we set sail for our viewing position
for tomorrow morning's total solar eclipse. Ahead of the
eclipse, join our Guest Astronomer in the lounge for an informative presentation.
Issue 53
MAR 13: Misool Islands and Sunset Barbeque The Misool Islands, one of the famed 'Four Kings' of the Raja Ampat region, are a gem-studded bracelet of islands that are a mecca for snorkelers and divers. The islands boast dramatic scenery,
with towering limestone pinnacles jutting out of the water and
white sand beaches adorned with palm trees. Travel ashore to
Wagmab Island and explore on a nature walk with the expedition
staff. You will also have the chance to experience the waters surrounding the island, which are home to at least three species of
the pygmy seahorse, no larger than a fingernail, and the most
splendid soft coral jungles, with their vibrant shades of orange,
red, purple and pink. This evening join the Captain and his crew
on the sun deck for a gourmet barbeque at sunset.

wines.

aboard Xplorer for exploration and birdwatching and join our expedition staff on a nature walk. Later there is time for kayaking
amongst the karst islands, and snorkeling over some of the finest
coral gardens in Raja Ampat. At Pelee Island enjoy your final opportunities to snorkel, SCUBA dive and join glass bottom boat
tours over the crystal clear waters of Raja Ampat.
MAR 15: Banda and Spice Islands
In the middle of the Banda Sea lies an enchanted fragment of history, the center of the Spice Island trade. Originally the world's
sole source of nutmeg and mace, these nine tiny islands have attracted traders since at least 2,000 years ago. In the 16th century, European explorers discovered entire continents in their quest
for these islands. On our approach to Banda Island the outline of
Gunung Api volcano, with its thin plume of smoke drifting from the
summit, will be clearly visible. See Banda's famous Kora Kora canoes in action, with up to 38 oarsman aboard they are a sight to
behold as they glide across the water. Later in the afternoon there
is time to explore Fort Belgica, built by the first Governor General
of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in 1611, the fort is extremely well preserved and provides an interesting insight into
Dutch colonization. Join the locals for a traditional dance and music performance before enjoying a glass of champagne as the sun
sets over the fort.

Eclipse News
Tropical Sails Corp
Tropical Sails began in 1990 while Dan Oppliger was
working for a tour operator in El Paso, TX. Dan
worked in the marketing department where he received a call from a prospect wanting a solar eclipse
tour down the Mexican Baja peninsula for the July
1991 total solar eclipse. Dan took the project to his
boss, who said “We don’t go to Baja in the summertime.”
Sunset at Sea
Dan Oppliger has
sailed with Coral
Princess Cruises
Dan ran ads in Astronomy magazine and quickly
had 85 people signed up to drive the Baja Peninsula. We saw all six minutes plus of the total solar
eclipse from a gorgeous beach southeast of La Paz.
We camped in RV parks and deserted beaches on
the trip. All arrangements we made using Dan’s expertise. A few clients backed out after erroneous information was published in the
major astronomy magazines.
Some clients asked “What are doing for Peru?” What do I know about Peru? In
1994 we had some clients in El Paso for the annular solar eclipse. Dan was the big cheese in town supplying
some 100,000 pair of “Eclipse Shades” to schools, businesses, radio stations and individuals.
Someone came up with idea is that I should charter a
Windjammer Barefoot tall ship for the February 1998
solar eclipse off Guadeloupe. We ended up with the Fantome, Polynesia, Legacy, and Mandalay. Added to that
was the new Star Clipper ship. In 1999 we went to Turkey for the first time. 33 people on private yachts for
two weeks. Sailing past Ephesus, the Dardanelles and Bosporus into the Black Sea.
Followed by two Africa eclipses.
We had a small group in Australia after 911. We saw a annular solar eclipse at sea
on the Yankee Clipper. We had a summertime group on the Polynesia for the Venus
Transit of 2004. 2006 was a big year with 84 people going to Turkey. I think is sold
so well because it was off season and just a 8 night voyage. Part of that group went
on to tour Western Turkey including most of the Churches of Revelation.
We had large groups in China for both the 2008 Silk Road Eclipse and 2009 repeat
of the Baja Eclipse Saros cycle. The Pacific in 2010 and Australia 2012. Interestingly it was the same Dawn Princess and the same, but older Captain for the Australia
Stateroom aboard
Eclipse Cruise.
We have good arrangements with suppliers all over the globe. Dan has been to 32
countries. We are here to arrange you group tour, or for individual travel with our
great suppliers.
