TASTING NOTES
Like all of our wines, our Talbott Chardonnay, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard is
made exclusively from estate-grown grapes. It has aromas of pear and green
apple, complemented by French oak and toasty brioche notes. On the palate,
it is lush and elegant, with a creamy mouthfeel and flavors of white peach
and pear. Round oak tannins are perfectly balanced by acidity, and there is a
long finish that builds over time. The Sleepy Hollow Vineyard defines this
wine, with power, richness, and bright (cool-climate, zone 1) acidity.
VINTAGE NOTES
The 2012 growing season was nearly perfect from start to finish. No rain
and consistent temperatures allowed for a great fruit set and our typical long
growing season led to exceptional quality grapes with excellent natural
acidity and richness.
VINEYARD
This wine was made almost entirely using Old Wente clone fruit (planted in
1972) from our prized South Block. It also includes a small amount of
grapes from 20-year-old Dijon clone vines. Sleepy Hollow is situated on
585 acres of benchland in the Santa Lucia Highlands, 13 miles south of
Monterey. The well-drained vineyard features sparse soils comprised of
sand, gravel, and granite. These soils reduce yields and create rich,
concentrated flavors in the grapes. The vineyard receives morning sunlight
from its east-northeast exposure, and lives much of the time in the cool fog
and wind from the Pacific Ocean. With a long, cool growing season, the
grapes develop the character, intensity and depth of flavor for which the
vineyard has become famous.
