SUMMERWORKS OVERVIEW Rowland Hall SummerWorks is a day camp, accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), serving campers ages 4-­‐15. For ten weeks during the summer, SummerWorks provides an active and engaging day camp experience for Rowland Hall students and students from a wide variety of schools across the Salt Lake area. Rowland Hall’s McCarthey campus is the base camp to our summer adventures. We are ideally situated in the Salt Lake Valley, providing endless access to nearby parks, area recreation centers, the Wasatch Mountains, local libraries, museums, and our established community partner organizations. Our staff is the life of our program. Each year SummerWorks recruits an exceptional staff of high school and college-­‐age men and women dedicated to careers in education, youth development, or recreation programming. Mission Statement: Igniting learning through curiosity, confidence, and character. Philosophy: A summer well-­‐spent is full of grass stains, watermelon mustaches, and new friendships. A summer well-­‐spent connects kids to incredible adult role models who act like monkeys, get sopped by water balloons, and are always a listening ear. A summer well-­‐spent challenges kids to stretch their limits, whether in the swimming pool, on a rock climbing wall, or in the camp play. A summer well-­‐spent has 48 long sun-­‐filled days, each of which is followed by the best sleep a kid can have. A summer well-­‐spent ignites the learning pathways, preparing kids to be active and curious learners when they return to school in the fall. MISSION: Rowland Hall’s mission is to inspire students to lead ethical and productive lives through a college preparatory program that promotes the pursuit of academic and personal excellence. TITLE: Summer Programs Assistant Director REPORTS TO: Summer Programs Director PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelors degree • Work experience in a camp setting • 2 years+ experience in recreation programming and facilitation • Basic computer skills; familiar with Mac software, Microsoft Word & Excel, Google Docs • Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-­‐task • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills • Ability to work independently with initial guidance and direction • Familiarity with Salt Lake City’s community and recreation resources • Flexible, positive, enthusiastic attitude and demeanor • Interest in and ability to work with youth ages 4-­‐15, and their families JOB SUMMARY: This position involves working closely with Summer Programs Director to organize, execute, and keep camp programs running smoothly. As a key member of the camp administrative team, the Assistant Director works collaboratively with the Director to oversee staffing, programming, camp operations, and camp communications. This is a temporary, seasonal position. With demonstrated success, however, there is opportunity to extend the term of employment by serving as a member of the summer administrative team in future summers. This position requires working collaboratively with the Director during the months prior to the start of camp to prepare for the summer. This collaborative work includes, but is not limited to: assisting with recruiting, hiring, and training of all staff, program development and implementation, learning the camp management software system, familiarization with American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation standards and camp operations, immersion into Rowland Hall’s school, camp, and community culture, and basic camp set up. Timely communication with and response to parents, both in person and via phone and email, is mandatory. Finally, the Assistant Director provides leadership and works collaboratively with the other members of the camp administrative team; the Director, the Program Director, and the Program Leads. This position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast paced environment, excellent organizational and communication skills, flexibility, excellent problem solving skills, and a sense of humor. The Assistant Director must possess a passion for children and families, outdoor education, recreation, and be committed to working collaboratively with local community partners. In collaboration with Director, responsible for all aspects of hiring for all Summer Programs staff positions (updating job descriptions, interviewing, reference checks, issuing employment contracts) In collaboration with Director, responsible for staff training; both pre-­‐camp and on-­‐
going weekly in-­‐service trainings during camp Serves as an active role model and mentor to all staff Programming: •

Develops engaging, age-­‐appropriate, mission driven programming for campers ages four-­‐fifteen that meets the ever-­‐changing needs and interests of our Rowland Hall community and surrounding communities Oversees scheduling and communication related issues of specialty classes/ instructors and am enrichment activities Together, with the Director and Program Director, establishes and oversees an efficient system to disseminate program-­‐related info (i.e. scheduling, calendars, policies/procedures) to staff, parents, and campers Accreditation (ACA): •
Responsible for maintaining annual accreditation compliance with the American Camping Association (ACA); familiarizing oneself with camp operations manual and implementing and overseeing all policies and procedures in place that meet ACA standards in the areas of: site & food service, transportation, health & wellness operational management, human resources, program design Administrative Tasks: •

Together with the Director, oversees camper registrations in an organized, efficient manner Prepares rosters and calendars; maintaining excellent organization and communication among all camp staff, campers, and parents •

Returns all phone calls and emails in a timely manner (within 24 hours) Provides adequate and necessary documentation in the instances of accident, injury, illness and emergency Oversee healthy snack program; ordering, calendar, cleanliness Compensation: TBD – based on education and experience Hours: Temporary, seasonal position with option to advance given demonstrated success. Ideal candidate is available to start in March, part time. Full time schedule (40 hours/week) begins in May, with the longest hours (40+ hours/week) falling during the camp session dates, June 9 – August 15. The remainder of August will require flexible hours to wrap up camp. The successful candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
