Spring is in the air – or at least
that is what the calendar is
indicating. Earlier this month
the groundhog promised that
we would only have a few
more weeks of winter and,
although the temperature as I
write this is sub-zero degrees, I
have faith in that little critter’s
forecast. I am sure it is because I am anxiously awaiting
the psychological renewal of a
new season and, especially the
forsythia blossoms that are a
sure sign of warmer things to
come.

Special Events
They’re baaack! Barb Wright, Sandy Cairo, and Nancy
Prinzi, working together as co-chairs of Special Events,
are busy putting together a full roster of fun and challenging programs for 2015. The theme this year is
“Push The Envelope!” We hope to pull you out of
your comfort zone to try something new, something
you didn’t think you could do, something you’ve always wanted to try but didn’t have the time or the
courage to attempt. While we will provide more
timely and in-depth details as events are solidified, we
want to give you a general outline of what’s to come.
On April 14-16 we will
host Nancy Nix-Rice, an
image consultant. She will
be the featured speaker at
our Tuesday evening meeting and hold a full day seminar on Wednesday. Nancy
will address such topics as
wardrobe planning, how
‘points of connection’
make any woman look and
feel beautiful, how to identify your personal color
palette, key styles to flatter
unique figure types, and 8
strategies to appear 10 pounds thinner without losing
an ounce. (We can see you all heading to the sign up
sheet right now!) Before you start thinking that this
will just be a boring lecture, let us assure you that with
a lively PowerPoint presentation, live demos, and
group exercises, it will be anything but that! On
Thursday, Nancy will be available for individual, private
color consultations, at your personal expense. She is
the author of 4 books on wardrobe planning, dressing
for your body shape, and developing a personal sense
of style. Several years ago, Juanita shared copies of
Nancy’s newsletter articles on style in Stitches on the
Grand. You may want to go back and peruse those
issues if you still have them. You might also like to
visit her website and sign up for her email newsletter
at www.nancynixrice.com .
In conjunction with Nancy’s seminar, we will issue a
guild-wide wardrobe challenge. Starting in April we
will challenge each other to build a core wardrobe
based on our own personal body type, color palette,
and style. This challenge will be similar to the challenge that the Lakeshore Neighborhood Group did a
few years ago. Details will be forthcoming at the April
meeting, but you will have from April until Novem-
ber to build this wardrobe. Our November meeting will be a presentation of the completed wardrobes.
Special Events Trip to the
“Dumpster Dive Place” and the
Chicago History Museum
June 24, 2015 is the date for the Special Events field
trip to Chicago. We will leave Grand Rapids at approximately 7:00 AM, EDT and stop in Holland to
pick up lakeshore members. Our scheduled arrival
time in Chicago is 9:30 CDT. The first stop is at
the Textile Discount Outlet.
If you have never been to this fabric “store” you
are in for a real surprise. Better known as the
‘dumpster dive place’ to those of us who have experienced it, this is a 3 story warehouse almost a
city block long filled with fabrics and trims. You
will not find any organization and very little pricing,
but those things only add to the fun. It will surely
overwhelm the first-timers!
We will leave TDO at 12:30 CDT and head to the
Chicago History Museum where we will have a box
lunch prepared by the museum’s café.

Pattern Description: Simplicity #2341 Jacket
Pattern Sizing: Miss to Plus
sizes
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern
envelope when you were
done with it? Yes. I made
two of these jackets in
view D without the shoulder extension and one in
view B.
Were the instructions easy
to follow? Yes, what I followed. I did miss how to
apply the pocket and so should have looked at the directions a little better.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the
pattern? I like all the different views in one pattern.
Once the basic pattern is fitted many jackets can be
made.
Fabric used: Two were in denim and one in light weight
decorator fabric.
Pattern alterations or design changes you made: Of
course I had to add inches to the hip area and had to
change the view D peplum so it had a size seam. I made
one with the “V” in the back and one with a standard
back. View “B” had a zipper up the front and on both
pockets. I did not add the collar. I also added a large
back neck facing to the second and third jacket.
Following lunch we will view their current couture exhibit, “Chicago Styled”, in two small, docent-led
groups. While one group is with the docent, the other
will have full access to the rest of this interesting museum. “Chicago Styled” features clothing from American
and European designers in the Museum’s permanent
collection. The exhibit explores the development of
North Michigan Avenue as one of the country’s most
recognized and renowned destinations for upscale
shopping. Designs by Norman Norell, Adolfo, Gianni
Versace and Channel are featured. CHM has an extensive couture collection. All of the garments are somehow tied to Chicago – worn by a Chicagoan, designed
by a Chicagoan, or worn at a special event in Chicago.
You will be amazed at how close up and personal you
will be able to get to these designer clothes.
After a chance to do a little shopping in the Museum’s
Gift Shop we will depart Chicago for home, making a
short dinner stop along I-94. Our estimated arrival
time in Grand Rapids is 10:00 PM, EDT.
Sign-up sheets will be available at each ASG meeting
from February through May, or until the bus is full. Participation is limited to 36 so sign up early. The cost for
this trip is $85.00 for members and $100.00 for nonmembers. This includes the bus trip, lunch, and admission to the museum. Sorry! Shopping at the Textile
Discount Outlet and the dinner stop are on your own.
Remember that your space is only reserved when
your fees have been paid so please pay promptly. Your
check should be made out to GRASG and placed in a
sealed envelope labeled “Chicago Field Trip”. Please
give your envelope to Sandy Cairo, Barbara Wright, or
Nancy Prinzi at a monthly meeting. We hope you will
join us. An ASG field trip is ALWAYS an adventure!!
Would you sew it again? Yes, with a fourth combination
of details.
Would you recommend it to others? Yes. I am teaching
this pattern at all three Lakeshore Sewing stores this
spring.

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge
April – November 2015 (print and save)
On April 14-16 we will host Nancy NixRice, an image consultant. She will address such
topics as wardrobe planning, how ‘points of connection’ make any woman look and feel beautiful,
how to identify your personal color palette, key
styles to flatter unique figure types, and 8 strategies to appear 10 pounds thinner without losing
an ounce.
In conjunction with Nancy’s seminar we
are issuing a guild-wide wardrobe challenge.
Starting in April we will challenge each other to
build a core wardrobe based on our own personal body type, color palette, and style. You will
have from April until November to build this
wardrobe. While the actual challenge doesn’t
start until after you’ve hear what Nancy has to
tell us, you can start thinking about your
capsule(s) right now. Following this description
you will find the guidelines for our Capsule
Wardrobe Challenge, along with a bibliography of Threads articles and some internet
resources about wardrobe planning. Our
November meeting will be a presentation of the
completed wardrobes.
Goals:
 Develop a wardrobe of 12 garments that can
be mixed and matched to fit the life-style of the
participant. We encourage you to make as
many of the 12 garments as you can but, feel
free to put your Capsule together with items
already in your closet or items you purchase to
complete the challenge.
 Develop a set of basic, “go-to” patterns that
result in successful garments on a consistent
basis
Considerations:
 What kind of Capsule Wardrobe do you
want to develop? Will it be for travel? Does
your every-day wardrobe need to be more flexible? Do you need a party capsule for a special
occasion? Do you need a sports/relaxation-time
capsule? A professional capsule? In what season
will this group be worn? Take into account
items already in your closet & try to blend this
capsule with garments you love.
 Consider making or adding accessories to
your Capsule – a purse, jewelry, belt, shawl,
shoes.
 Use this Challenge as an excuse to “clean
house” and get rid of things that don’t fit or you
haven’t worn in over 2 years.

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge continued
The Process:
Choose garments from the following:
 5 Bottoms: Skirt, Slacks, capris, leggings,
shorts, jeans, etc.
 4 Inside Tops: Blouse, T-shirt, sweater, tank,
etc.
 3 Outside Tops: Jacket, blazer, overcoat, raincoat, hoodie, windbreaker, vest, etc.
 Consider adding a dress if you like wearing
them. How about a bathing suit and cover-up if
you’re developing a sport or travel capsule?
 Remember, if you are making some of the 12
garments, you should choose patterns you can
use over and over. Keep them simple with room
for future design changes, & embellishment.
 There are no requirements regarding the fabrics you use. Maybe you will want to challenge
yourself to use a certain percentage of the total
yardage from your stash! Read Susan Lazear’s
Domino Design article in the January 2008 issue
of “Threads” to see how to mix-and-match your
fabrics
Before you begin planning what kind of wardrobe
plan (travel casual, professional, etc.) you will put
together for the Guild challenge, go into your
closet and assess what’s already in there. I’ll bet
you have at least 1 grouping right now! Pull out
some garments and try this system out. I’m sure
you’ll be amazed. You will find combinations you
never before considered. You will see ‘holes’
that you can fill as part of the challenge and you
will find pieces that should be discarded or given
to charity. All around it’s a win-win!!

2015 Anyone Can Win Contest
When was the last time you considered joining a
Neighborhood Group for a day of sewing?
Today, I have joined the Northeast Group at Faith
Lutheran Church on Fuller and 3 Mile Road. Seven
regular members and one interloper gathered on
this sunny, but cold morning.
Projects include completing Retreat projects, kindle covers, neo-natal quilts, quilt tops for the
church quilting group, and afghan knitting. Then
there’s me, working on this newsletter, hoping
they will give me feedback before it’s printed and
sent out.
This venue is

equipped!
The church
has a closet
just for their
sewing
friends. Ironing boards,
irons, extension cords
and easy to
maneuver tables are here for their use. They even
have a stash of fabric and accessories for their
community service sewing.
Anyone Can Win is the ASG equal opportunity sewing
event because anyone who enters has a
chance to win, regardless of your sewing
expertise or experience.
Anyone Can Win is open to ASG “over
18” members and anyone age 18 and
under. (Open to U.S. residents only.) If
the entrant is not a Junior Member, the
“18 and under” category needs an ASG
sponsor. But it isn’t necessary for the sponsor to have been
