“Today’s Oilfield, Truth or Fiction”
Doug Lynch will speak on “Today’s
Oilfield, Truth or Fiction”, addressing
issues from an environmental and
technological perspective. From the
first major oil spill in Santa Barbara in
1963 up to the BP Deepwater Horizon
spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, the
oilfield has not always had the best
reputation. Technological changes such as horizontal
drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and new seismic techniques
are shaping not only our oilfields but the world’s global oil
map.
Doug has spent over 25 years in the oil industry and has
lived and worked in many of the world’s oil centers. He
received his BS degree in Ocean Engineering from the
University of Hawaii and spent his early career with Vetco
Offshore in Ventura, one of the early pioneers in the
offshore oil and gas industry. After receiving his MBA, Doug
moved into management consulting for the oil industry and
in 1999 he formed his own company, the Reach Group,
based in Houston but with offices around the world. The
Reach Group is a leader in management consulting to the
upstream oil and gas industry and has clients including
most of the world’s largest oil companies. Doug will be
introduced by Jim Shaw.

Cosmo member Weyman (Sandy) Jones
will discuss “How a Writer Reads the
Mystery Novel.” Author of seven books,
four of them mysteries, Sandy will
review the evolution of the mystery
from its nineteenth century beginning
into an enduringly popular literary
genre. From the point of view of a
writer, he will explore what makes a
story work and will nominate his favorites among
contemporary mystery writers. He will invite questions,
including any about the writing process. Sandy had a
career in corporate communications. Along the way he
also wrote fiction, first short stories for popular magazines
and then historical novels for young readers. Since his
retirement as vice president, public affairs, of Grumman
Corporation, he has been writing mystery novels that
are published by Five Star/Gale. A graduate of Harvard,
during the Korean War he served as an enlisted man and

Opera at The Granada March 25th
Fred Sidon deserves kudos for his efforts resulting in a most
enjoyable day at the opera. Beginning with a delightful
brunch at La Cumbre Country Club, the group was provided
superb seats for a wonderful production of Mozart’s “The
Marriage of Figaro”. This comedic opera could almost have
been penned by that British duo Mssrs. Gilbert and Sullivan.
Nobody died, everybody was confused, and love won the
day.
Special Invitation
Fred Sidon has also extended an invitation to his fellow
Cosmos to attend another opera event to be shared with
the French Network of Santa Barbara: Brunch and opera on
April 29th. The brunch will be at La Cumbre CC as in March
and the opera will be at the Lobero. The opera will be
Orphee et Eurydice by Gluck is an opera about love and is
being performed in Santa Barbara for the first time. Contact

“The Origins and Fate of the Universe”
Jim Davis introduced our much
accomplished speaker, Professor Lubin.
From earliest writings, we know that our
ancestors have speculated as to the origin
and fate of our universe. Einstein’s theory
of gravity (general relativity) provided the
first testable scientific theory of the
universe (1916). Professor Lubin discussed
the most likely beginning and fate of our universe, and the
experimental efforts that allow us to assess the possibilities.
Most recently he has been involved with the NASA/ESA
Planck satellite which is producing extensive data relevant
to the formative years, the latter years, and the eventual
possible extinction of all life in the universe. Prof. Lubin
has been at UCSB since 1987, and became a Full Professor
in 1993. The earlier part of his career was spent at UC
Berkeley, except for one year at Harvard and one year at
Princeton. His A.B. in Physics and Mathematics and his
Ph.D. in Physics were both earned at UCB. His publications
are numerous and concentrated on topics in astrophysics
and cosmology. He was co-recipient of the Gruber
Cosmology Prize in 2006.
the necessary complexities presented. It is hoped that just
touching on a few salient points will suffice here.
The field of Cosmology is a rapidly expanding one,
somewhat analogous to our universe itself. The eternal
mystery of the universe is seemingly incomprehensible, and
the more we learn the more incomprehensible it becomes.
Simply stated, the creation of the universe can be described
in three epic stages: the first split-second known as the Big
Bang, the next 400,000 years during which the universe
took the nature that we can identify with stars and the
beginning of star systems, and the following 13.7 Billion
years during which time we have been trying to figure out
what really happened during that first split second.
Dr. Lubin compared the relative data acquisition of the
Planck Satellite with its precursors the WMAP , launched
in the early 90’s, and the C.O.R.E., launched earlier still.
The Planck satellite has 20 X more sensitivity and 3X more
angular resolution than the WMAP thus presenting our
scientists with unprecedented look into the cosmos. For
those who desire more information about Baryogenisis,
eschatology, anisotropy, the Big Crunch, neucleosynthesis
and hyperexpansion Dr. Lubin and your editor suggest a
visit to www.deepspace.ucsb.edu .
We heard that dark matter and dark energy make up some
96% of our universe with identifiable matter comprising but
4%. Clearly, dark matter provides the controlling function of
the universe and we don’t know what it is.
We learned that just above our human visible spectrum lies
the ultraviolet, in which spectrum our atmosphere provides
very high level of attenuation without which life on earth
would not be possible.
Under the heading of “Good News and Bad News”, many
of us were relieved to hear that scientists now discard the
theory that the universe will someday collapse; it is now
thought that the opposite will occur and it will continue to
expand at an increasing rate. It was earlier believed that
planets such as Earth capable of supporting life as we know
it were extremely rare; now it is believed that there are
probably countless such planets in countless star systems
throughout our universe. It is also theorized that ours may
not be the only universe in existence.
Professor Lubin left us with a 1956 quote from Isaac
Asimov’s “The Last Question” as humans ask the question
of the most sophisticated computer in existence: “Can
entropy be reversed?” The computer responded: “There is
insufficient data for an answer”.
For all of its complexity, Professor Lubin did quite a good
job of presenting the material in an understandable manner
to our mixed-majors group. Your editor will not attempt
an extensive summary of the information presented to our
membership at this fascinating and most impressive physics
lecture, as many of our membership will not follow some of

Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin
The cathedral was founded c.1030 by Sitric, King of the Dublin Norsemen. Christ Church is one of the oldest Dublin landmarks.
The cathedral and the Treasures of Christ Church exhibition reflect 1,000 years of history, architecture & worship. The choir was
founded in 1480 and with the choir of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral took part in the first performance of Handel’s Messiah. Concerts,
recitals & lectures are also part of the cathedral programme but the music at the regular services is a major attraction.

Powerscourt House & Gardens
One of the world’s great gardens, Powerscourt is situated 12 miles south of Dublin in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. The
garden was begun by Richard Wingfield in the 1740s and stretches out over 47 acres.
It is a sublime blend of formal gardens, sweeping terraces and ornamental lakes together with secret hollows, rambling walks,
walled gardens and over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs.The 18th Century Palladian house, designed by the German born archi
tect Richard Castle, now incorporates an innovative shopping experience and terrace café.
Glendalough Visitor Centre
This early Christian ecclesiastical settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. Set in a glaciated valley with two lakes,
the monastic remains include a superb round tower, stone churches and decorated crosses. The Visitor Centre has an interesting
exhibition and an audio-visual show. The Visitor Centre is fully accessible for visitors with disabilities. Access to the graveyard is
very difficult for wheelchair users.

Links Course is located across the estuary from Malahide, just North of Portmarnock.The Island Golf Club was Established
in 1890 and, surrounded by the sea on three sides, it enjoys a unique setting. Until as recently as 1973 the Club was
approached by boat from Malahide across the estuary. Fred Hawtree, Eddie Hackett and more recently Martin Hawtree
have made course design improve ments, ensuring that the true nature and character of the links are enhanced.

Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre & Knowth
Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre interprets the Neolithic monuments of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. The extensive exhibition
includes a full scale replica of the chamber at Newgrange as well as a full model of one of the smaller tombs at Knowth.
All admission to Newgrange and Knowth is through the Visitor Centre, there is no direct access to these monuments. Visitors are
brought from the Visitor Centre to the monuments by shuttle bus. Your tour includes a visit to Knowth.

Blaskets Visitor Centre
The Blascaod Centre in Dún Chaoin, on the tip of the Dingle Peninsula,celebrates the story of the Blasket Islanders, the unique
literary achievements of the island writers and their native language, culture and tradition. Sadly An Blascaod Mór was abandoned
in 1953 as a result of the decline of its once vibrant population.
Gallarus Castle & Oratory
Gallarus Castle was built by the FitzGeralds and is probably 15th century in date. It is one of the few surviving castles on the
Dingle peninsula. It is a four-storey tower with a vaulted ceiling on the fourth floor; none of its battlements remain.
Conservation works have been undertaken at the castle in recent years and the interior is fully accessible. The tower was accessed
originally on the 1st floor and there was a two storey defensive structure to the front, now gone but evidence of it can be seen on
the external wall. Restricted access for visitors with disabiltiies.
Gallarus Oratory
One of the most famous landmarks on the Dingle Peninsula and situated close to Gallarus Castle. The Oratory is completely made
of stone and some way it resembles an upturned boat. Various dates have been suggested for its construction but an exact date
for same is not available. It is extremely well preserved and several archeological artifacts are to be found on the grounds of the
Oratory.
