Owners Message
Hey everyone, this is our first time writing
one of these, so we hope you like it.
First off we’d like to describe what
Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks is.
Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks is held
in Moab, Utah on the weekend following
Mothers Day. Our headquarters are at
the Old Spanish Trail Arena on HWY
191. (3641 S Hwy 191, Moab, UT
84532). Mostly Discount Tire Rally on
the Rocks (ROTR) is a guided trail ride
event. Our trails cover everything from
the extreme rated 10+ to a scenic “dirt
road” 1 rating with everything in between. We have over 20 distinct trails to
choose from! There are no bad trails in
Moab as it is arguably the most scenic,
unique place on the planet.
Did we forget to mention our vendors
and sponsors? Industry leading vendors
are here to help you get your rig Moab
ready and keep you on the trail, we also
have the top manufacturers doing demo
rides! Where else can you get a demo
ride from several different brands in the
same place?
Lastly, you get to hang out with 1000 of
your closest SxS/UTV friends! We’ve
had many participants make long lasting
friends from across the country at Rally
on the Rocks.
One question we get asked a lot is why
do you put on the Rally? Over the years
the answer has changed a little but ends
up being the same. The Smile! Once
we’ve taught or guided someone over
an obstacle that they think is impossible,
there is always the inevitable head turn
back at us with a huge smile! And then of
course we get many people that shake
our hands and thank us for putting on
ROTR and the memories they have with
their family.
Growth comes change.
Come one, come all.
You can always come ride in Moab but the Rally only comes once a year!
See you in May!

important information that will answer many of your questions. If you still can not
find the answers you are looking for feel free to contact us!
Where is Discount Tire Rally
on the Rocks?
Moab, Utah
Where is the rally
headquarters?
Event headquarters is at the Old Spanish
Trail Arena just minutes South of Moab,
Utah on HWY 191. (3641 S Hwy 191,
Moab, UT 84532)
When is Discount Tire

is May 14-17, 2014
Can I change my trail
selections once selected?
Yes. You can change your trail selections
at the event.
Will my stock side by
side work on the trails
in Moab?
Yes. We offer many different options for
the stock machine.
Are helmets required?
No on all trails with the exception on the 3
tech trails. However they are encouraged.
If you sign up for one of the 3 tech trails
you MUST wear a 1/2, 3/4, or full D.O.T.
approved helmet.
What equipment
do you recommend?
Basic repair tools, tire repair kit, spare
belt, misc parts. Along with personal
basics such as water, snacks, lunch,
sunscreen, jacket, rain gear, first aid kit,

No. Your vehicle must have a steering
wheel and roll cage.
What is the weather like
in Moab this time of year?
The normal max temp is 82.3 with the

to be prepared for rain as we have seen
it rain at the rally before. A rain slicker &
jacket are good to have along with you.
If you register onsite you may or MAY
NOT get the trail selections that you want
to run. We advise you to pre register online for the highest chance of running the

to substitute trails of equal difficulty.

Rally On The Rocks
Chicken Corners
The 2 rated Chicken Corners trail climbs
Hurrah Pass providing spectacular views
of both the Colorado River Gorge and Kane
Creek Canyon. It then follows the remote and
scenic rim lands of the Colorado River Gorge
ending just across from Deadhorse Point.
The Trail: Much of the trail is graded
dirt or two track sand. The ride up and
down Hurrah Pass may be pretty bumpy
but not hard on your suspension if you go
slow. Be careful when the trail reaches
the rim of the Colorado River gorge. The
roadway is off camber (tilting toward the
river) and the drop is over 400 feet. The
end of the trail is a at Chicken Corners.
Apparently an old hiking trail went beyond
this point and around the sharp Goose
Neck bend. Those who wouldn’t do that
part of the trail were Chicken. Views of
the colorful, deep Kane Creek Canyon
become more and more impressive as
Hurrah Pass is climbed. Once on top
you can see for miles. The trail runs very
near the steep drop off into the Colorado
River Gorge as it gets closer to Chicken
Corners. POLICE ESCORT
3-D
The 3 rated 3-D trail explores colorful
canyon bottoms and rims on an
enjoyable, picturesque, family
4-wheeling trail. The Entrada Sandstone rock formations here are a
unique combination of smooth red and
white layers. The slickrock areas are
composed of the white layer that caps
the Entrada. The views of the bold relief
from the bottom, middle, and top give
this trail its 3-D name.
The Trail: There is very little challenge along this trail as
the road surface includes two-track dirt, sandy wash bottoms,
a little slickrock and a few ledges. Some minor obstacles
include Airport Hill, the Wall and Mean Hill all of which will
benefit from some reduced tire pressure. MUST TRAILER

Rally On The Rocks
Hook-n-Ladder
At approximately 29 miles South of Moab
you will find yourself with over 40 miles
of trail known as the Hook-N-Ladder Trail
System. Trail 15 ends at the edge of the
Mesa on Wilson Point overlooking Wilson
Arch, a must see. At one point you can climb
the ladder to the Indian Bathtub. There are
spectacular views of the many mountain
ranges in all directions.
The Trail: This trail will lead you through scrub juniper. Sandy
trails dotted with patches of slick rock will take you around sandstone
hoodoos and over landscape for which Moab is famous. MUST TRAILER
Kane Creek
The 3 rated Kane Creek Canyon
trail offers 60 water crossings in
an otherwise thirsty and desolate
area. The deep canyon is beautiful
from end to end but changes
significantly in character from
the bottom to the top end.
The Trail: Creek crossings and more creek
crossings are the order of the day on this trail.
Watch out for a sudden heavy rain that can make
the crossings impassable. Also watch out for
quicksand. Toward the upper end are some high
rough cliff wall sections that are attention getting.

Rally On The Rocks
Top of the World
The 3 rated Top of The World trail involves a long
day of driving but some fantastic scenery and
views. The exhilarating 7,000 foot high “Top of the
World” panorama alone is worth the long trip. The
Onion Canyon Narrows is equally impressive on
the way out.
The Trail: The trail leaves Highway 128 to the south just before the
Dewey bridge crossing of the Colorado River around 30 miles northeast of
Moab. The trail explores the area southeast of the Dewey bridge. Rocky
uneven trail where getting close to the edge of the “Top of the World” viewpoint is NOT recommended. It is a very, very long way down. MUST TRAILER
Picture Frame Arch
The 3 rated Tip Toe version of the Behind the
Rocks trail offers most of the same scenery that
the more extreme 8+ version does with much
less potential of vehicle damage. The trail leaves
Highway 191 about 13 miles south of Moab just
after climbing a long hill on the highway. The
exit is on the right going to the west.
The Trail: The Tip-Toe version of the trail allows participants
to view the High Dive, Upchuck, and White Knuckle Hill obstacles
that the Behind the Rocks trail is famous for. There are a few minor
drainage crossings with exposed rock ledges that will require some
attention to climb. Don’t forget to have your picture taken while
standing under “Picture Frame Arch”. POLICE ESCORT

Trail Descriptions
Rally On The Rocks
Fins -N- Things
The 4 rated Fins -N- Things trail
runs along both sides of Sand Flats
Road between the much more
difficult Hell’s Revenge trail and
the much higher Porcupine Rim
trail. Steep climbs up and descents
down Navajo Sandstone slickrock
fins provide the excitement and
the “things” leftover as the sandstone erodes provide interesting
views. On the way to the trail
you will pass the Moab Dump,
Lion’s Back, Hell’s Revenge and
the Slick Rock Bike Trail along
the way.
The Trail: Most of the trail is
slick rock but there is some loose
deep sand. One steep sand hill
near the beginning of the trail will
give some vehicles problems if it
is very dry. There are several steep
ups and downs on slick rock. Drivers
with near stock vehicles and little
experience are well advised to take
the bypass at Ken’s Climb. The
scenery, as usual in this area, is
exquisite. Views of the snow capped
La Sal Mountains and the Porcupine
Rim Ridge dominate to the east.
There are some glimpses down into
Negro Bill Canyon to the north. But
most interesting are the sandstone
“Fins -N- Things”. POLICE ESCORT
Porcupine Rim
The 4+ rated Porcupine Rim Trail is long and
bumpy but affords fantastic views of Castle
Valley and the La Sal Mountains. Many take
the trail just to get a picture of their side x side
on “Picture Rock” which protrudes out over
the 1,500 drop off into Castle Valley. Scenery is
the main attraction on this trail. The views into
Castle Valley are awesome and will keep your
camera very busy.
The Trail: Not too long after
beginning the trail, it begins to closely
parallel Negro Bill Canyon. The canyon
was named after a small rancher who,
many years ago, fenced off the lower end
of the Canyon by the Colorado River and
grazed cattle here. There was no need to
14
fence any of the rest of the canyon. The
trail crosses the upper part of the Negro
Bill drainage and quickly climbs toward
Porcupine Rim. The most spectacular
views are from the Porcupine Rim edge
which the trail closely follows for about
1 1/2 miles. Toward the end of these
spectacular views is “Picture Rock” where
you can drive your rig out over a 1,500
foot drop off and get pictures of it with
the La Sal Mountains as the backdrop.
Off camber, rocky with ledges that will be
sure to scrape your skid plate. POLICE

Rally On The Rocks
Hey Joe Canyon
The 4 rated Hey Joe Canyon trail climbs
down into the Green River gorge Labyrinth
Canyon through Spring Canyon. The trail
ends in the Hey Joe Canyon mining ruins before it doubles back through Labyrinth Canyon.
The views while dropping down the ledge road
in Spring Canyon and along the Green River in
Labyrinth Canyon are spectacular.
The Trail: The drop into Spring Canyon
is steep on a rough ledge road. It is a very
sudden change from the straight graded road
that leads to it. The trail along the bottom is
subject to rockfalls. Other rock falls contribute
to the challenge. Brush crowds both sides
of the trail in Labyrinth Canyon.
Be careful, the River is deep and
swift along the side of the trail and
the trail is extremely narrow in places.
MUST TRAILER
Seven Mile Rim
The 4 rated Seven Mile Rim trail accesses
some famous scenery with mostly easy
4-wheeling. The trail investigates the
terrain north of Highway 313 and west of
Highway 191. The trail head is about 11
miles north of Moab. The Uranium Arch
and Determination Towers are elegant
and intriguing. The massive Monitor and
Merrimac Buttes are majestic. Panoramic
rim views include Arches National Park
and the Book Cliffs to the north.
The Trail: Much of the trail is two track dirt road. Only
the sidehill portions around the south side of Merrimac Butte
and a sandy hill near the end up the difficulty to a 4 rating.

Rally On The Rocks
Hell’s Revenge
The 5+ rated Hell’s Revenge trail exposes
great expanses of “Slick Rock” (sandstone)
with slopes so steep you will wonder if your tires
can maintain traction. The very steep climbs and
descents on the slick rock are not for the faint of heart
and cannot be bypassed.
The Trail: The first optional obstacle
is just off the paving of Sand Flats Road.
The “Dump Bump” is the most difficult way
to mount the sandstone fin that begins
the trail. Steep ascents, sharp turns and
steep descents will be the order of the
day. A steep hair-raising descent on a
narrow ridge allows no room for error
left or right. As you start the decent your
side x side’s hood will drop a long way
before you can even see the narrow
ridge top in front. POLICE ESCORT
Steel Bender
The 6 rated Steel Bender trail follows a historic wagon
road that works its way up from a beautiful canyon to
elevations above 6,000 feet. It features 2 creek crossings,
numerous steep ledges, and two challenging rocky climbs
that have bypasses. Steel Bender starts on private land
immediately northeast of the Moab Golf Course and ends
at Kens Lake. This is a trail that can be run in reverse and
is becoming increasingly popular to do so.
The Trail: A well marked trail that
is easy to navigate. It is surrounded by a
wilderness study area, so it is critical that
you stay on marked routes at all times.
Most obstacles have by-passes, there is
one however that does not. Do NOT
attempt without a spotter or strap. This trail
20
will test your suspension with most of the
trail navigating various sizes of boulders.
Panoramic vistas of rock canyons and
mesas mixed with serene creek canyons
and up-close views of the snow covered La
Sal mountains will keep your eyes in awe
all throughout the trail. POLICE ESCORT

Trail Descriptions
Rally On The Rocks
Gold Bar Rim
The 6+ rated Gold Bar Rim trails offers
obstacles to keep your eye out for along
with fantastic views. The Gold Bar cliff rim
is about 1200 feet above Highway 191. Since
the rock slopes down to the west, the views
in all directions are spectacular. Bull Canyon
is also visited with a stop at a breathtaking
dry 300 foot waterfall and a view of Gemini
Bridges from below.
The Trail: The most difficult driving
is up the final slopes to Gold Bar Rim but
the trail is sure to excite all along the way.
The final ledge is just a short walk from
the rim and some will park below that
obstacle rather than risk the damage. The
trail leaves Highway 191 to the west about
7 miles north of the Colorado River bridge.
The trail follows Little Canyon and then
turns back toward the Rim through Gold
Bar Canyon. MUST TRAILER
Poison Spider
The 7 rated Poison Spider Mesa trail
is one of Moab’s most popular. It is
just a short drive from town and
offers a wide variety of obstacles
with less difficult bypasses at some
of the most difficult ones. Most likely
you will enjoy having your lunch
with an arch as your backdrop.
The Trail: The Poison Spider Mesa
trail has scenery and obstacles for
everyone. A variety of rock ledges offer
the most challenge while some steep
slick rock looks more difficult than it may
actually be. There is an optional sand
hill that will be difficult when dry. There
22
are some fast sections
but please keep in mind there is a max
speed of 25mph while out on the trails.
Views back across the Colorado River
Gorge toward the Behind the Rocks area
are fascinating along with the panoramic
view from the 1,000 foot cliff rim above
Highway 191 near the end of the trail.

Rally On The Rocks
Metal Masher
The 7 rated Metal Masher trail includes
some challenging obstacles and a 1300
foot high view from Arth’s Rim which
overlooks Highway 191 between Gold Bar
Rim and Highway 313. The pretty vertical
walls and the impressive “Goony Bird”
in Little Canyon are absorbing. The latter
stop on Arth’s Rim overlook provides
long engaging views in all directions
including into Arches National Park.
The Trail: Metal Masher has plenty of well named
obstacles to threaten your machine. At the left is “Widow
Maker”. Other obstacles include “Mirror Gulch”, “Motherin-Law Hill” and the optional “Rock Chucker Hill.”
MUST TRAILER
Strike Ravine
The 7 rated Strike Ravine trail covers the terrain on the
east side of Highway 191 opposite Behind the Rocks and
Kane Creek which are on the west side. It features rocky
creek bottoms with occasional boulders and ledges along
with one particularly loose difficult hill climb.
The Trail: Not all trails in Moab are
on the slickrock that Moab is known for.
The first obstacle is a steep hill climb
with loose rocks called the “Big Ugly
Hill”. Two hills have loose dirt and rocks
that cause poor traction. The canyon
bottoms have large rocks and rock

Trail Descriptions
Rally On The Rocks
Moab Rim
The 7+ rated Moab Rim trail ascends steeply tilted rock strata to climb to the top corner
(and beyond) of the Moab Rim at the Colorado
River just east of Moab. Dangerous obstacles, spectacular views in all directions and ancient Indian ruins
add excitement to the trip.
The Trail: The Moab Rim trail is very
difficult. Broken axles and roll overs are
not uncommon. The first major obstacle is
the Devil’s Crack. Be careful, it is easy to
lay your side x side on its side here and
it is very near the gorge and it is a long,
long way down. The next major obstacle
is the “Z” turn. It requires a sharp right and
then a left while climbing steep irregular
rock ledges. Toward the end of the trail is
an optional rock dome with a steep 85%
grade. POLICE ESCORT
Cliffhanger
The 8 rated Cliff Hanger trail lives up to it’s
name. You will be hanging on a cliff, negotiating
some formidable ledges with Jackson Hole several hundred feet below getting your attention.
Right from the beginning you will be gripping
your steering wheel tight as you drop in from the
rail head. Prepare yourself for a fun filled day.
The Trail: The trail begins
with a crossing of Kane Creek
which can be impassable just
after a rain. It can also contain
quick sand. The climb up out of
the creek and the obstacles just
after are difficult. The ledge obstacles along the cliff hanging section
are the most attention-getting.

This trail is approx. 4.5 miles one
way. Splendid panoramic views
of the Colorado River and beyond
entertain those that successfully
negotiate the trail. But the most
unique views are of Jackson Hole,
where the river flowed in millennia
past. POLICE ESCORT

Rally On The Rocks
Behind The Rocks
The 8+ rated Behind the Rocks trail offers
extremes in 4-Wheeling from two track level
road to obstacles that most drivers with good
sense would avoid. Views of the very rugged
Behind the Rocks weather sculpted sandstone are impressive along the way. Running
it backwards compounds the difficulty of the
key obstacles. Breakdowns are to be expected
and roll-overs are not uncommon.
The Trail: The Behind the Rocks trail
is very difficult. Some obstacles do allow
for bypass while others including White
Knuckle Hill do not. This trail is not for the
beginner. You will find yourself surrounded
by unique weathered sandstone fins and
domes just behind the rock cliff that faces
Moab. There are several opportunities to
pier down into Kane Creek Canyon which
bounds the area on the southwest. The
trip in through Hunter Canyon is particularly scenic. This trail will be sure to test
driver and machine! POLICE ESCORT

Discount Tire announces new partnership with Tread Lightly!
Jan 27, 2014 – (Scottsdale AZ) Discount
Tire, the world’s largest tire and wheel
retailer and Rally on the Rocks is teaming
up with Tread Lightly! in an effort to promote
and maintain safe outdoor recreation and
to help keep public lands open for all
outdoor enthusiasts.
“Making the decision to partner with Tread
Lightly! was an easy one,” commented Vice
President Mark MacGuinness. “Many of
our customers and employees are outdoor
and off-road enthusiasts, and while we all
love our off-road vehicles, what we enjoy
even more is the access they provide to the
road less traveled. Since Tread Lightly!’s
core focus is on supporting and encouraging
stewardship of our lands and waterways,
it’s a natural fit. Our goal is to work with
Tread Lightly! to help bring awareness
to safe and responsible motorized and
mechanical off road vehicle use.”
From enthusiast off-road events like the
Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks, the
Easter Jeep Safari, and the FJ Summit,
to mainstream off-road motorsports like
Ultra4 Racing and the Lucas Oil Off Road
Racing Series, Discount Tire increases
their involvement in the off-road community
every year. The announcement of the
Discount Tire/Tread Lightly! partnership
is certainly another step in that direction.
One element of this partnership is a
Restoration for Recreation initiative on a
number of signature trails in Moab, Utah,
with a volunteer project on Hells Revenge
during Rally on the Rocks. Since The
Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks is the
premier UTV/SXS event held in Moab each
year, owner Lanse Chournos jumped at the
opportunity to be involved. “We really have
a vested interest in this project. It is up to
us to keep the trails open for posterity and
show that the UTV/SXS community cares
about access.” stated Mr. Chournos.
Tread Lightly! will be working with the
BLM, Discount Tire, and the Rally on the
Rocks organization on priority trail
maintenance on trails in Moab that are in
danger of closing due to high traffic and
misuse.
Through a great show of leadership, the
Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks organization is stepping forward to co-ordinate
volunteers for a “trail day” during the 2014
event. This trail day will continue the
restoration efforts by asking participants
to donate some of their time and labor to
the cause.
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer
for this event, please let us know by sending
an email to [email protected].
