Bridgeport Catholic Academy Highlights In Miss Jackie’s Pre K 3 class at Bridgeport Catholic Academy, students have completed units of study about families and habitats. As an extension activity, students are taking care of our classroom friends, Booker Bear and Clifford the Big Red Dog, in their own homes. Every weekend, one student cares for each character friend. The student and their family write daily entries and add pictures to the character’s journal to be shared with the class on Monday. Miss Jackie reports that her students’ favorite part of this activity is sharing the pictures of their homes and talking about the adventures with Clifford and Booker Bear that are pictured in the journals. Students are also learning to compare and contrast by naming “same” and “different” details about each character’s journal. A fun and interesting way to learn. Pre K 3 students Bella Liboon and Ethan Parker. Beat 925 CAPS Meeting TONIGHT! The next Beat 925 CAPS meeting will be held Wednesday January 15th at 6:00 PM in the basement of St Gabriel School. BE SOMEONE WHO MATTERS TO SOMEONE WHO MATTERS... MENTORING WORKS! MWRD New Budget By a unanimous vote, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) have adopted the agency's budget for fiscal year 2014. Commissioner Kari K. Steele, Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Employment, said that “the District is shifting from a waste treatment utility to a resource recovery utility and this shift is placing us in front of many issues utilities are facing across the country. We are in a good financial position and have a solid capital improvement plan. We are dedicated to service and we are dedicated to research and development. In short, we are set for another great year in 2014.” St. Barbara Students Do Service Project In preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation, St. Barbara seventh and eighth graders are doing a variety of service projects in addition to their ministry and parish projects. On December 10, the students and their teachers traveled down to the Merchandise Mart to help Catholic Charities organize and pack Christmas bags for the needy families served by the organization. The students worked hard for three solid hours and barely made a dent in the generous donations of many people. Family bags were packed and then organized by the centers that would receive them. The bags would be distributed to the various case workers and then given to families to enjoy for Christmas. Nowak Memorial Service A Memorial Service for Commander Ronald Nowak will be held at Rhine VFW Post 2729, 5858 S. Archer Ave. from 1PM to 4P.M. on Saturday, January 18, 2014. In lieu of flowers donatio n s m a y b e m a d e to the Rhine Post. Parking is available on West end of lot across from the Post. St. Barbara students Jaclyn Mata, Billy Murrihy and Isabelle Garrity, along with their classmates, pack the family bags for Catholic Charities It was a great way for the students to work for a cause that would make a difference in the lives of so many. The students enjoyed reading the biographies of the families receiving the bags. It made them understand poverty in a real way and appreciate what they have in their own families. They came away feeling as though they were an integral part of a good cause. THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE WEDNESDAY, January 15th, 2014 TO PLACE YOUR AD McClellan School News CALL: 773.927.0025 Winter Blowout Sale! ! JANUAERSY S The Kindergarten students at McClellan Elementary School sang the song “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” for the Holiday Assembly on December 20th. They did a wonderful job of singing and acting out the song. Their teacher, Ms. Catherine Brown, also read the story of “Rudolph” to them and connected it to the Literacy and Social-Emotional Curriculum which lead to important discussions about bullying. The children learned that bullying and being unkind is unacceptable behavior. The Kindergarten students not only did an extraordinary job performing at the assembly, but also learned a valuable lesson as well!! Safe Walking in Snow and Ice When Melting and Refreezing Occur Falls account for more than 1M injuries in the U.S. annually. The most common type of walking accident is the slip and fall. For example the type of fall that happens when you fall walking on a sidewalk, parking lot or street not clear of snow or ice. The most dangerous part of a snow storm may be the day or days following the snow when sunny skies and higher temperatures during the day melt the snow, and lower temperatures at night refreeze the melted snow, creating a cycle that could continue for days, creating a hazardous condition for walking and driving. SIMA, the North American nonprofit organization representing the snow removal industry, has these tips on safe winter walking. TIP #1: Wear proper footwear. Proper footwear should place the entire foot on the surface of the ground and have visible treads. Avoid a smooth sole and opt for a heavy treaded shoe with a flat bottom. TIP #2: Be careful when you shift your weight. When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. The same theory applies if you are carrying something such as grocery bags or a child--the imbalance can cause you to slip and fall. TIP #3: Plan ahead. While walking on snow or ice on sidewalks or in parking lots, be aware of your surroundings. Instead of just looking down, pause and look up occasionally to see where your feet will move next to anticipate ice or an uneven surface. Occasionally scan from left to right to ensure you are not in the way of vehicles or other hazards. TIP #4: Conditions nice for ice. Watch for areas where melting and refreezing may persist for weeks. These areas may include parking lot drainage areas, roof gutters, piles of snow where melting and refreezing can continue for weeks. Also posing threats are areas where snow melts from overhangs and then refreezes, where melted water may pool between parking spaces or buildings, or walkways with trees dripping water on sidewalks. TIP #5: Anticipate black ice. Watch for thin sheets of ice that may appear as wet pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear in the morning, in shady spots or where the sun shines during the day and melted snow refreezes at night. TIP #6: Walk even slower on stairs. When walking up or down outdoor steps or stairways, be sure to grip handrails firmly and plant your feet securely on each step. TIP #7: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may be treacherous because it is likely to be located where snow and ice removal is not possible. TIP #8: Enter a building carefully. When you get to your destination such as school, work, shopping center, etc., be sure to look at the floor as you enter the building. The floor may be wet with melted snow and ice.
