Now in its third year, this year’s Festival once again promises an array of creative opportunities and entertainment across art forms. The paper was named Regional Weekly Newspaper of the Year with a circulation below 20,000 at the Regional Press Awards, held at the Park Plaza in London. It marks the second major award won by the Derry News in the past year, having previously lifted the Coca-Cola CIPR Weekly Newspaper of the Year Award. The Derry News was also nominated in the Front Page of the Year category at the awards for a special edition of the paper covering the publication of the Saville Report. Judges at the Regional Press Awards described the Derry News as a ‘true gem of a newspaper’. “The Derry News may be a new kid on the block….but it is a superb and ebullient weekly newspaper. “It is happy to lead the way, as its first class coverage of the Bloody Sunday report demonstrates. “The judges were particularly impressed by its confidence and willingness to cause a stir and an editor who welcomes solicitors’ letters because it shows the paper had ‘rattled a few cages’. A true gem of a newspaper.” Commenting, Derry News editor Ciaran O’Neill said that the award was a testament to the commitment and dedication of all the paper’s staff. “We’re a very small team but we constantly punch well above our weight,” he said. “Our coverage of the Saville Report showed that, and we’re delighted to have received such a high profile award given the quality of the competition.” A number of other newspapers from the north were also recognised at the ceremony. The Irish News picked up a brace of awards, including the Regional Newspaper of the Year, the Daily/Sunday Newspaper of the Year while journalist Allison Morrison won the Daily/Sunday Reporter of the Year. The Sunday Life also lifted awards in two categories, with Ciaran Barnes taking Specialist Writer of the Year& and his colleague Mark McCormick lifting Daily/Sunday Photographer of the year. The awards were run by the Society of Editors in part-0 nership with Hold the Front Page, the Newspaper Society, the Press Association and the Journalists’ Charity. < &0 0< &< &0< . ■ Derry News Deputy Editor Alan Healy pictured receiving the award for Regional Newspaper of the Year (under 20,000) from host Nick Ferrari at the Regional Press Awards held at the Park Plaza, London.
