Welcome!
“As principal funders of InterAct Youth
Arts Festival, the Arts Council believes
that inspiring the imagination of
young people can lead them to enjoy
a more creative and fulfilling quality
of life. Now in its third year, this
year’s Festival once again promises
an array of creative opportunities
and entertainment across art forms.
From dance and drama, to film and
multimedia, there is something on offer
for everyone.”
Gavin O’Connor, Youth Arts Officer,
Arts Council of Northern Ireland
It is that time of year again, with the
holidays upon us it is only right that
the InterAct Youth Arts Festival is back
to brighten and liven up your summer.
The Youth Forum have once again
been working throughout the year with
consistent creative vigour and devoted
enthusiasm to ensure that the young
people of the North West have an array
of arts based activities and stimulating
workshops, special guest master
classes, films and live events to choose
from. We are calling all young people
from across the city, who are interested
in any aspect of the arts, engaging
with an assortment of new people or
would just enjoy the opportunity to try
something a bit different, the InterAct
Festival is sure to have something for
you. Now here comes the really difficult
bit, choosing what you want to do!
Aine Cronin-McCartney
InterAct Youth Forum member
InterAct Youth Arts Festival gratefully
acknowledges the funding support
received from the Reconciliation
Fund administered through the
Department of Foreign Affairs.
Following remarkable public response
last year, InterAct Youth Arts Festival
2011 is set to be even bigger,
brighter and bolder in the third year
of this vibrant celebration of youth
culture and arts. From Monday 25th
to Sunday 31st July the City will be
enlivened with a plethora of FREE
youth arts events including theatre,
dance, music, visual arts, circus,
crafts, carnival and film. As always, all
events have been carefully selected
by the dedicated members of the
Youth Forum for their 12-21 year old
peers. InterAct Youth Arts Festival &
Youth Forum continues to represent
the Millennium Forum’s commitment
to nurturing, supporting and
showcasing the indigenous talent of
this City of Culture while encouraging
interaction between youth, artists,
venues and our local communities. If
you are aged 12-21 years, we hope
you experience, explore and are
entertained by all that InterAct has to
offer. We look forward to welcoming
you to InterAct 2011.

Most of us sit through plays and films without thinking where the
realistic-looking props come from. A plastic version of Yorick’s skull
may not be too hard to come by, but a script may call for a spear
that looks the part but isn’t going to kill anyone, or the director
demands an alien. That’s where the prop-maker comes in. You will
design, construct and finish a prop which could be used as part of
a theatre set or in a carnival parade. The finished piece can result
in any form, themed or random; man or animal, plant, spacecraft
or monster... you decide.

Derry News scoops top newspaper award
THE Derry News has scooped another major accolade
at a top awards ceremony in London.
The paper was named Regional Weekly Newspaper
of the Year with a circulation below 20,000 at the Regional Press Awards, held at the Park Plaza in London.
It marks the second major award won by the Derry
News in the past year, having previously lifted the Coca-Cola CIPR Weekly Newspaper of the Year Award.
The Derry News was also nominated in the Front Page
of the Year category at the awards for a special edition
of the paper covering the publication of the Saville
Report.
Judges at the Regional Press Awards described the
Derry News as a ‘true gem of a newspaper’.
“The Derry News may be a new kid on the block….but
it is a superb and ebullient weekly newspaper.
“It is happy to lead the way, as its first class coverage
of the Bloody Sunday report demonstrates.
“The judges were particularly impressed by its confidence and willingness to cause a stir and an editor
who welcomes solicitors’ letters because it shows the
paper had ‘rattled a few cages’. A true gem of a newspaper.”
Commenting, Derry News editor Ciaran O’Neill said
that the award was a testament to the commitment
and dedication of all the paper’s staff.
“We’re a very small team but we constantly punch
well above our weight,” he said.
“Our coverage of the Saville Report showed that, and
we’re delighted to have received such a high profile
award given the quality of the competition.”
A number of other newspapers from the north were
also recognised at the ceremony.
The Irish News picked up a brace of awards, including
the Regional Newspaper of the Year, the Daily/Sunday
Newspaper of the Year while journalist Allison Morrison won the Daily/Sunday Reporter of the Year.
The Sunday Life also lifted awards in two categories,
with Ciaran Barnes taking Specialist Writer of the Year&
and his colleague Mark McCormick lifting Daily/Sunday Photographer of the year.
The awards were run by the Society of Editors in part-0
nership with Hold the Front Page, the Newspaper Society, the Press Association and the Journalists’ Charity.

Director: Year: Running Time: Rated: The demented barber Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp)
succumbs to his lust for revenge on his return to
London, after being unjustly convicted and transported
to Australia. This infamous homicidal story plays out
in a Victorian London hellhole where Todd and his
industrious accomplice Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham
Carter), slit the throats of his clients, before turning
them into meat pies! Not for the squeamish, this
stage-to-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s
classic musical is a macabre and riveting Tim Burton
masterpiece.

Rated: When Avon lady Peg Boggs (Diane West) calls at
the ruined Gothic castle that leers down on her
conservative American suburb, she discovers Edward
(Johnny Depp) all alone and brings him home. The halffinished experiment of a mad scientist who died before
he could replace his large shears with real hands,
Edward’s talent for topiary and hair design make him a
neighbourhood favourite; until he discovers feelings for
Peg’s daughter Violet (Winona Ryder). This magical Tim
Burton movie is about tolerance as much as difference
and creativity.

Director: Year: Running Time: Rated: Being the best at extracting valuable secrets from the
subconscious during the mind’s vulnerable dream state has not
only made Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) an expert in industrial
espionage, but also a fugitive! To change this he and his team
must plant an idea instead of stealing one, avoiding a dangerous
enemy that predicts their every move, and in doing so carry out
the perfect crime. This film takes the viewer into the world of
dreams, as well as around the globe, with an international cast
directed by ‘The Dark Knight’s’ Christopher Nolan in this movie
which is a colossal digital artefact, a virtual reality sci-fi thriller set
inside the dreaming mind, with brilliant architectural effects.
