Dr. Patricia Picard
Cormier, President of Longwood University, will be the
graduation speaker for the
Class of 2010.
Her topic is “The Power
of One: How
you Can Make
a Difference in
the World.”
Dr. Cormier
is an educator
and higher education administrator who is
known for her
personal warmth, boundless
energy, and commitment to
learning. She has master’s and
doctoral degrees from the
University of Virginia and
a bachelor’s degree from
Boston University. She has
also studied at Columbia
University and
the University of
Bridgeport. Her
academic specialty is health
promotion and
preventive health
behavior.

SUMMER PROGRAMS
PECPS will offer summer enrichment programs and camps designed to prepare students in elementary school and middle school
for the next grade level, and promotion prep courses and credit recovery programs designed to help students advance to the next grade or
course level.
Students entering Grades 3 and 4 may choose from week-long
enrichment programs in reading or math. Three-week middle school
reading and math camps are available for students entering Grades
5 and 6. Also offered will be a Pre-Algebra/Sports Camp for students
entering Grades 7 and 8 and an Algebra/Sports Camp for students entering Grade 8.
Week-long Advanced Placement Prep classes are planned for
high school students who will take AP courses in Biology, Chemistry,
Language, Literature, History, Calculus or Statistics.
The division will offer Promotion Prep classes in English, Pre-Algebra and Algebra for students in Grades 7 and 8 who need the course
to advance to the next grade and Credit Recovery classes in English,
Algebra I and II, and Geometry for students in Grades 9 and 10.

of 2010 will be held Saturday morning, June 5, at 10
a.m. in the Prince Edward
County Middle School
gymnasium. There will be a
reception for the graduates
and their guests from 8:30
to 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.

Nitra Amelia Arlton Eastby

Bradley is the son of
Melanie and Johnny Holman of Farmville and Dale
Lowe of Farmville. He is
president of the National
Honor Society and president of the senior class.
He is on the baseball, cross
country and swim teams. He
was named first place winner in electronics technology in the state Skills USA
Competition in April and
will compete in the national
championships in Kansas
City June 20-25. Bradley
will attend Virginia Tech.
Nitra is the daughter of
John Eastby and Rondi Arlton of Hampden-Sydney.
She is a member of the National Honor Society, the
cheerleading squad, and the
girls’ soccer, cross country,

Scholars have successfully
completed a rigorous program of study, comprised of
three mathematics courses,
including Algebra II; three
laboratory science courses,
including biology, physics,
and chemistry; a fine arts or
career-technical education
course; and two years of
the same foreign language.
Commonwealth Scholars
students have also participated in career and college
readiness activities during
their time in high school.

to Serve on State-wide VHSL Committee
PECHS

DaQuan Johnson has been
selected to represent Region I on the Virginia High
School League Student Action Team.
The SAT is composed
of 12 members, one representing each VHSL region,
and members are selected
to ensure a balance of athletics and activities, male
and female students, urban
and rural populations, and
racial and ethnic diversity.
The team was created to
build greater student awareness of the VHSL and the
importance of participation
in activities. While serving on the Student Action
Team, students are linked to
the governance and administration of
their athletic and
activities
association. Students on

and active capacity, promoting participation, sportsmanship, community building, service, positive values,
teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.
Creative Writing State Champs
Six Prince Edward County High School creative writing students
earned first place in the state in the VHSL Creative Writing Booklet competition for Group AA. They are, from left to right, Sydney
French, short story; Malcolm Vaughan, poetry; Jessica Robinson,
essay; Phillip Cunningham, essay; Calla Bowles, short story; Mrs.
Rachel N. Overstreet, Creative Writing Coach; and Deborah Gur,
poetry. Phillip placed third overall in the essay category and Calla
placed first overall in the short story category.
PECES Perfect Attendance Winner
Interim Superintendent Stanley O. Jones, as his last official act, presents a bicycle to second grader Maria Carrera, whose name was
drawn for the prize. The names of all the PECES students with perfect
attendance through April were entered in the drawing.
During his two-year
tenure on the SAT, DaQuan
will attend meetings in
Charlottesville, plan and
help organize state student
leadership conferences, and
assist at state championships
in sports and activities. His
participation on the team
commences in July with
an all-expense-paid trip to
the NFHS National Student
Leadership Conference in
Indianapolis.

NHS, the new members must
have a minimum GPA of 3.2, as
well as teacher recommendations
and a record of volunteer service and leadership positions. All
members are required to perform
15 hours of community service
each semester. The four tenets of
NHS are Scholarship, Leadership,
Service and Character.
FBLA State Winners
Members of the Prince Edward County High School chapter of the
Future Business Leaders of America attended the State Leadership
Conference and Competition in Reston April 16-18. Congratulations
to Courtney Garrett who placed first in Public Speaking II, Jenny
Thomson who placed first in Introduction to Business Communication, and Jaquan Scott who placed second in Business Procedures.
The Parliamentary Procedure team of Chelsea Parent, Mary Nunnally, Amanda Neese, and Caitlyn Shantz also placed first. The students were coached by Ms. Mary Beth Blessing, Mrs. Jessica Tibbs,
and Mr. Gerald Roach. Courtney, Jenny, Chelsea, and Jaquan will
continue on to the National Leadership Conference and Competition in
Nashville, TN July 14-17.
Forensics Team 4th in State
The PECHS Forensics team placed fourth in the state in VHSL competition, after winning its second consecutive regional championship
and fourth consecutive district championship. In the state competition
Preston Paul and Zach Ranson took third place in Duo Interpretation;
Laura Sawyer placed third in Storytelling; Courtney Garrett placed
third in Original Oratory; Jordan Bynum and Katisha Sargeant took
fourth place in Duo Interpretation; Alicia Moseley placed fifth in Poetry; Dylan Abrams placed twelfth in Impromptu Speaking; and Amber Harvin took twelfth place in Serious Dramatic Interpretation.
