THE COACHES
MIKE TOMLIN was named the 16th head coach in Pittsburgh
Steelers history on Jan. 22, 2007. Hired at the age of 34, Tomlin
became only the third head coach hired by the Steelers since
1969.
Tomlin became the youngest head coach in NFL history to both
coach in and win a Super Bowl when he led the Steelers to a 2723 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. By winning
the Super Bowl in only his second season as a head coach, he
also became the fastest to win a Super Bowl title in Steelers
history.
Tomlin is one of only seven coaches in league history to win a
Super Bowl within his first two seasons as an NFL head coach.
Tomlin has compiled a 31-17 record in the regular season
during his three-year head coaching career. His .646 winning
percentage after three seasons is second-best in team history.
By leading the Steelers to a 9-7 record in 2009, Tomlin became
only the second Steelers’ head coach to post winning records
after each of his first three seasons.
The Steelers’ offense ranked seventh in the NFL (ninth passing,
19th rushing) and became the first unit in team history to boast a
4,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard
rusher in the same season. Pittsburgh’s defense ranked fifth in
the NFL (third vs. run, 16th vs. pass) while leading the AFC and
finishing one shy of the NFL lead with 47 quarterback sacks.
The Steelers continued to be dominant at Heinz Field under
Tomlin in 2009. Pittsburgh finished with a 6-2 home record in
2009 after finishing 7-1 (2007) and 6-2 (2008) at home during
Tomlin’s first two seasons. Tomlin’s 19-5 record and .792 winning
percentage at home after three seasons ranks second in Steelers’
history.
The Steelers’ defense was dominant under Tomlin’s guidance
in 2008, leading the NFL in total defense (237.2), pass defense
(156.9), points per game (13.9), total yards per play (3.9), rushing
yards per attempt (3.3), passing yards per attempt (4.7) and third
down efficiency (31.4), and finished second in league rushing
defense (80.3).
Tomlin became only the second Steelers head coach to win his
first three games. During 2007, the Steelers became just the fifth
team in NFL history to win their first four home games by at least
20 points.
Tomlin led the Steelers to a 10-6 record in 2007, and became
just the second coach in team history to post a winning record,
win a division title and earn a playoff berth in his inaugural season.
Tomlin was the NFL’s second-youngest head coach in 2007,
and he became only the second Steelers coach in team history to
win at least 10 games during his first year at the helm. The
Steelers posted a 7-1 record at home in 2007 and were 5-1 in the
AFC North (3-0 at home).
Tomlin was a three-year starter at wide receiver at William and
Mary (1990-94) and finished his career with 101 receptions for
2,046 yards and a school-record 20 TD catches. A first-team AllYankee Conference selection in 1994, he established a school
record with a 20.2 yards-per-catch average.
MIKE SMITH was named the 14th head coach in Atlanta Falcons
franchise history on January 23, 2008.
In his first two seasons with the team, he has compiled a 20-12
record, a playoff appearance in 2008 and back-to-back winning
seasons for the first time in franchise history.
Smith’s two-year regular-season winning percentage of .625
is the second-best mark for an Atlanta head coach in their first two
years with the team.

2002 NFL Draft, tossed a game-clinching touchdown pass in
Super Bowl XL to help Pittsburgh capture its fifth Lombardi Trophy.
QB Byron Leftwich returned to Pittsburgh after spending one
season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Leftwich was on the
Steelers’ roster in 2008 and played in five games, finishing 21-of36 for 303 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for the
year.
LB Larry Foote was originally drafted by the Steelers in the
fourth round (128th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft and played
seven seasons with Pittsburgh (2002-08) before a one-year stint
with the Detroit Lions (2009).
CB Bryant McFadden was drafted by the Steelers in the second
round (62nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent four seasons
with Pittsburgh before leaving for the Arizona Cardinals in 2009.
Turning Up the Heat: Since 1994, the Steelers have led the AFC
in sacks five times and the entire NFL twice.
In 2009, the Steelers finished with 47 sacks, which ranked first
in the AFC and second in the NFL.
Sacks became an official NFL statistic in 1982, however, a record
of “passers tackled” was kept prior to that time. Following are the
Steelers’ single-season sack totals dating back to 1970:

What To Look For:
PITTSBURGH TEAM NOTES
• Pittsburgh looks for its eight straight win on Kickoff Weekend, which
is the longest current streak in the NFL.
• The Steelers look to improve to 40-32-4 all-time on Kickoff Weekend.
• The Steelers are looking to improve to 12-2-1 all-time against the
Atlanta Falcons.
• Pittsburgh looks to improve to 6-0-1 at home against the Falcons.
• The Steelers look to improve to 20-5 at Heinz Field during the Mike
Tomlin era (2007-present).
PITTSBURGH INDIVIDUAL NOTES
WR Hines Ward
• Needs one touchdown to move into a second-place tie with RB
Jerome Bettis on the team’s all-time touchdowns list. Ward currently
has 79 career touchdowns (78 receiving, one rushing) while Bettis
finished his Steelers’ career with 80 touchdowns.
• Needs one 100-yard receiving game to break the team’s all-time
record. He is currently tied with Hall of Famer John Stallworth with 25
career 100-yard receiving games.
• Needs 53 yards to reach 11,000 career receiving yards and become the first player in club history to achieve the feat.
TE Heath Miller
• Needs 159 receiving yards to move into second place on the team’s
all-time list for tight ends. He currently has 2,721 career receiving
yards, trailing only Bennie Cunningham (2,879) and Elbie Nickel (5,133).
C Maurkice Pouncey
• Will make his first NFL start at C in his first career game, becoming
the first offensive lineman to start the season opener of his rookie
year since OT Marvel Smith started at RT in 2000. According to
Steelers’ archives, Pouncey is just the second offensive lineman
ever to start as a rookie for the club. He also becomes the sixth
rookie to start his first career game since 2000 (P Daniel Sepulveda
- 2007, TE Heath Miller - 2005, LB Kendrell Bell - 2001, WR Plaxico
Burress - 2000, Smith - 2000).
DE Aaron Smith
• Needs 2.5 sacks to move into seventh place on the team’s all-time
sack list ahead of Dwight White (46.0). Smith currently has 44.0
career sacks.
LB LaMarr Woodley
• Looks to extend his team record to nine straight games with at least
a half-sack. He has posted at least a half-sack in eight straight games,
dating back to the middle of the 2009 season. During that span, he
has 11.5 sacks.
LB James Harrison
• Needs two sacks to move into ninth place on the team’s all-time
sack list ahead of Ernie Holmes (40.0). Harrison currently has 38.5
career sacks.
Total Defensive Package: Pittsburgh has allowed the fewest
total yards in the NFL since the beginning of the 2006 season.
The Steelers have given up 17,747 yards of total offense (5,572
rushing, 12,175 passing) since the beginning of the 2006 year.
The total yards against ranks first in the NFL during that span,
while the rushing yards and passing yards each rank third in the
league.
Road Warriors: Despite their 3-5 record on the road in 2009,
the Steelers have had great success playing away from Heinz
Field.
Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Steelers own the
fourth-best road winning percentage in the NFL.

Offensive Explosion: The Steelers’ offense, which ranked third
in the AFC and seventh in the NFL by averaging 371.3 yards per
game, posted over 500 yards of total offense three times in 2009.
The 371.3 yards per game average was the most by the Steelers
since the 1979 season when they averaged 391.1 yards per
contest.
The 2009 season marked the first time since 1979 that the
team has gained at least 500 yards in a single game more than
once in a season. The Steelers gained over 500 yards in 1979
four times, including a season-high 606 yards against the
Cleveland Browns on Nov. 25, 1979.
The Steelers posted 537 yards of total offense (472 passing,
65 rushing) in the Week 15 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The 472 passing yards tied the team record for a single game,
which was set on Dec. 13, 1958 versus the Chicago Cardinals.
The Steelers also had a memorable day in the Week 6 victory
over the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh finished
with a season-high 543 yards of total offense (403 passing, 140
rushing) in Week 6 versus Cleveland, which was the most by the
team since they posted 556 yards of offense in a 49-31 victory
over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 19, 1995.
For just the second time in team history, Pittsburgh had a 400yard passer (QB Ben Roethlisberger - 417 yards) and two 100yard receivers (WR Hines Ward - 159 yards, WR Santonio Holmes
- 104 yards) in the win over the Browns.
Defense! Defense! Defense!: Pittsburgh ranked fourth in the
AFC and fifth in the NFL in total defense by allowing 305.3 yards
per game in 2009.
A variety of Steelers have contributed “splash” plays that led the
Steelers to victory in 2009.
In the Week 7 victory over the previously unbeaten Minnesota
Vikings, the Steelers’ defense had two returns for touchdowns.
LB LaMarr Woodley posted his second career fumble return for
a touchdown as he scooped up a QB Brett Favre fumble and
raced 77 yards for a score.
LB Keyaron Fox also made the Vikings pay late in the game as
he sealed the victory with an 82-yard interception return for a

LOOKING AHEAD...
The Steelers hit the road for their first road game of the
regular season as they travel to Nashville, Tenn. to battle the
Tennessee Titans. Kickoff at LP Field is set for 1 p.m. EST
and will be televised on CBS (locally KDKA-TV, channel 2).

and touchdown.
Pittsburgh had one interception (S Troy Polamalu) and one
sack (LB James Farrior), and limited the Tennessee Titans to
just 31 percent (4 of 13) on third-down attempts in Week 1. The
Steelers also limited Tennessee to just 86 yards rushing and
forced one fumble.
Leading 28-20 late in the game in Week 5 versus the Lions,
Pittsburgh registered three straight sacks with less than two
minutes remaining to seal the victory.
Holding Their Ground: Over the past nine years, Pittsburgh’s
defense has been among the best at holding its opponents to the
fewest rushing yards in the league. In 2009, the Steelers gave up
89.9 yards per game on the ground, which was first in the AFC
and third in the NFL.
In the past seven seasons, Pittsburgh has allowed an NFL-low
nine 100-yard rushers. Baltimore is second with 15.
Additionally, since 1994 the Steelers have led the AFC in rushing
defense eight times and the entire NFL three times.

Ward On The Run: WR Hines Ward’s versatility makes him a
threat to run the football as well as catch a pass.
Ward has 430 career rushing yards to mark the most by a
Steelers wide receiver in team history.
Ward scored his first (and only) career rushing touchdown in
2004 against Philadelphia.
Wallace Ready For More: WR Mike Wallace had 39 catches
for 756 yards (19.4 avg.) with six touchdowns in 2009, his rookie
campaign. His 19.4 yards per catch average led the team.
Wallace led all AFC rookies with 756 receiving yards and ranked
fourth among all AFC rookies with 39 receptions.
In the Steelers’ Week 15 victory over the Green Bay Packers,
Wallace accounted for two of the game’s biggest plays. He finished
with two catches for 79 yards (39.5 avg.) with two touchdowns, his
first multi-touchdown game of his career.
Wallace caught the game-winning 19-yard touchdown pass as
time expired in the game to give Pittsburgh the victory over the
Packers. His other catch was a 60-yard touchdown reception on
the Steelers’ first offensive play of the game.
Mendenhall Makes The Most Of It: RB Rashard Mendenhall
had a breakout season in 2009 as he posted his first career
1,000-yard rushing season with 1,108 yards on the year.
Mendenhall’s 1,108 yards ranked eighth in the AFC and 14th in
the NFL. He rushed 242 times with a team-high seven rushing
touchdowns.
In his 13 games as the starter in 2009, Mendenhall had 1,063
yards rushing on 235 carries (4.5 avg.) with seven touchdowns.
Mendenhall finished with a career-high 165 yards rushing on
29 carries (5.7 avg.) with two touchdowns (first two of his career)
in Week 4 (2009) versus the San Diego Chargers. He also caught
two passes for 26 yards (13.0 avg.).
Mendenhall’s 165 rushing yards were the most by a Steeler
since Willie Parker had a club-record 223 yards rushing on Dec.
7, 2006. It marked the Steelers’ first 100-yard rushing game of the
season and the first since the 2008 season finale against
Cleveland (Parker - 116).
Mendenhall’s performance was just the sixth time a Steeler
rushed for at least 165 yards and two touchdowns in the same
game since the NFL merger in 1970. The following is a look at the

has developed into one of the Steelers’ most potent offensive
weapons as he was first (tied) on the team with six receiving
touchdowns. Miller was named to his first Pro Bowl following the
2009 season.
Miller was third on the team with a career-high 76 catches,
which broke the team’s single-season record for receptions by a
tight end, and had a personal single-season best 789 receiving
yards (10.4 avg.) in 2009. In addition, his blocking ability separates
him from many “receiving” tight ends.
In the Week 15 victory over the Green Bay Packers, Miller finished
with a career-high 118 yards receiving on seven catches, his
second career 100-yard receiving game and only the 11th in team
history by a tight end.
Miller became just the fifth tight end in team history to reach
2,000 career receiving yards in Week 2 at Chicago (first since Eric
Green - 1994).
Miller has 27 career touchdowns, which is second on the team’s
all-time list for touchdowns by a tight end. Pittsburgh is 18-6 when
Miller finds the end zone.

Double Trouble: The Steelers have a tradition of fielding some
of the best pass-rushing linebackers in the NFL, and current
linebackers James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley have
accounted for two of the top four sack totals by a Steelers’ duo in

Preseason Game #1
Preseason Game #2
Pittsburgh 23, Detroit 7
Aug. 14, 2010
Heinz Field (55,248)
Pittsburgh 24, New York Giants 17
Aug. 21, 2010
New Meadowlands Stadium (76,469)
PITTSBURGH — Steelers’ QB Dennis Dixon threw a 68-yard
touchdown strike to rookie WR Antonio Brown in the fourth quarter to
seal the 23-7 victory over the Detroit Lions in the 2010 preseason opener.
In a game that featured rain delays and a pregame ceremony to honor
recent Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, defensive coordinator Dick
LeBeau, the Steelers relied on their stout defense and their young talent
to propel them to victory.
S Ryan Clark’s interception of Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford set up the
Steelers’ first score. K Jeff Reed connected from 35 yards out to put the
Steelers on the board 3-0. But early in the second quarter, QB Matthew
Stafford found WR Calvin Johnson for a two-yard score. It would be the
last time the Lions would put up any points.
K Jeff Reed put the Steelers within one (7-6) with a 37-yard field goal.
On the next drive, Steelers’ RB Isaac Redman scored on a one-yard
touchdown run, capping off a six-play 75-yard drive. Redman finished
with 60 yards on 15 carries.
After a one-hour and 13-minute rain delay, the Lions drove to the
Pittsburgh 12-yard line on their opening drive of the second half. However,
CB Anthony Madison forced a fumble and the Steelers took over from
their own seven-yard-line. On the ensuing drive K Jeff Reed hit a 32yard field goal, his third of the game, shortly before the third quarter
expired.
K Aaron Pettrey missed a 42-yard field goal midway through the fourth
quarter, and the Steelers took over on their own 32-yard-line. On the first
play, Dixon found Brown in the middle of the field for a 68-yard score.
Dixon was 6-for-7 for 128 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for
31 yards.
The Steelers gained 286 yards of total offense, but it was their defense
that held the Lions in check. The Steelers defense forced two Lions’
turnovers and held them to only 79 yards rushing, while limiting the Lions
to only 2-for-9 on third-down conversions.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — QB Byron Leftwich found WR Mike
Wallace streaking down the middle of the field late in the second quarter
for a 68-yard touchdown, and a pair of Steelers’ rushing touchdowns in
the third quarter sealed the 24-17 victory against the N.Y. Giants at the
New Meadowlands Stadium. Pittsburgh improved to 2-0 in the preseason
and 12-3 in such games under Head Coach Mike Tomlin.
Tempers flared early in the game resulting in two ejections. On the first
possession of the game, CB Ike Taylor and WR Hakeem Nicks exchanged
punches and were immediately ejected from the game. The game would
remain scoreless until early in the second quarter when K Jeff Reed
connected from 26 yards to put the Steelers up 3-0.
The Giants would take a 7-3 lead on RB Ahmad Bradshaw’s nine-yard
touchdown run midway through the second quarter, but it would be the
last time they would lead. The Steelers would go up 10-7 on the 68-yard
touchdown pass by Leftwich to Wallace. CB Joe Burnett’s interception
of QB Rhett Bomar put the Steelers in good field position to add to their
lead, but the Giants stopped the Steelers on the one-yard line just as the
clock expired before halftime.
On the Steelers first possession of the second half, RB Isaac Redman
capped a nine-play, 78-yard drive with a 12-yard rushing touchdown. RB
Dwayne Wright scored from two yards out late in the third quarter and
the Steelers were up 24-7. The Giants would cut the lead to seven late in
the fourth quarter, but the Steelers simply ran the clock out to secure the
win.
Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Steelers racked up 412
yards of total offense. QB Ben Roethlisberger, QB Dennis Dixon and
Leftwich combined for 253 yards passing and one touchdown. Steelers
running backs accumulated 161 yards on the ground, and five Steelers
had at least 25 yards rushing.
For the second consecutive week the Steelers defense limited their
opponent to less than 30 percent on third-down conversions, forced at
least one turnover and controlled time of possession.

Preseason Game #3
Preseason Game #4
Denver 34, Pittsburgh 17
Aug. 29, 2010
INVESCO Field at Mile High (67,823)
Pittsburgh 19, Carolina 3
Sept. 2, 2010
Heinz Field (52,130)
DENVER — Pittsburgh dropped its first game of the preseason as it fell
to the Denver Broncos, 34-17, at INVESCO Field at Mile High, thanks in
part to three interceptions thrown by Steelers’ quarterbacks, two of which
were returned for touchdowns. The Steelers fell to 2-1 in the preseason
while the Broncos improved to 1-2.
The Broncos struck first when RB LenDale White scored from two
yards out on their opening drive. The Steelers responded when K Jeff
Reed connected on a 33-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.
QB Dennis Dixon drove the Steelers to the Denver nine-yard line in
the second quarter, but was picked off by CB Perrish Cox. On Denver’s
ensuing drive, K Matt Prater booted a 39-yard field goal to put the Broncos
ahead 10-3.
CB William Gay’s interception late in the first half put Pittsburgh in
position to possibly cut the advantage, but Dixon was picked off by CB
Andre Goodman, who returned it 77 yards for a touchdown to give
Denver a 17-3 halftime lead.
The Steelers scored early in the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdown
run by RB Jonathan Dwyer that cut the lead to 20-10.
QB Tim Tebow tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to WR Eric Decker
on the next drive to give the Broncos a 27-10 lead. However, QB Charlie
Batch found WR Antonio Brown for a seven-yard touchdown to trim
the lead to 27-17.
After forcing a Denver punt, the Steelers gained possession on their
own 23-yard line. However, on the second play, Batch was picked off by
CB Syd’Quan Thompson, who returned it 48 yards for a touchdown to
seal the victory, 34-17.
The Steelers finished with 355 yards of total offense, including 175
yards on the ground and 180 in the air. Denver tallied 268 yards of
offense (128 rushing, 140 passing).
Dwyer led all rushers with 89 yards on 13 carries (6.8 avg.), including
a long of 40 yards, and one touchdown. WR Mike Wallace had a teamhigh three receptions for 59 yards (19.7 avg.), including a 47-yarder from
QB Ben Roethlisberger on the team’s first offensive play of the game.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers capped off a successful 2010
preseason with a strong defensive victory over the Carolina Panthers
19-3 at Heinz Field. The Steelers finished the preseason with a 3-1 record
for the second consecutive year and improved to 13-4 all time in preseason
under Coach Mike Tomlin.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start in the first quarter as neither team
could really do much offensively. The Panthers looked poised to strike
first during their opening drive, but K John Kasay hit the crossbar on a 51yard field goal attempt. Towards the end of the first quarter Steelers K
Jeff Reed connected from 33 yards to put the Steelers up 3-0.
Midway through the second quarter Steelers’ QB Bryon Leftwich
found WR Emmanuel Sanders for an 18-yard gain to put the Steelers at
the Carolina 34-yard line. Leftwich injured his knee during the play and
would leave the game. QB Dennis Dixon came in for Leftwich and threw
a 23-yard touchdown pass three plays later to WR Emmanuel Sanders
to put the Steelers up 10-0. It was Dixon’s only series of the game.
K Jeff Reed would add to the lead just before halftime with a 43-yard
field goal to put the Steelers up 13-0. Reed would add to his total in the
third quarter with a 31-yard field goal and towards the end of the fourth
quarter with a 32-yard boot. Reed finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 on
field goals and finished the preseason a perfect 9-for-9. Carolina’s only
score came on Kasay’s 51-yard field goal at the beginning of the fourth
quarter.
Though the Steelers only managed 105 passing yards as a team, Steelers’
running backs racked up 168 yards on the ground. For the second
consecutive game RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing and
carries. He finished the game with 20 carries for 86 yards, including a
long of 36 yards.
After a shaky performance in Denver last week, the Steelers defense
responded with a strong showing against the Panthers. The Steelers
held Carolina to only 123 yards on offense, had four sacks and held them
to only 4-of-16 on third down conversions.
