AKA The Diaries of Lady Calza The CNC has a history of holding Water Training seminars for those wishing to participate in water tests with their Newfs. These events are usually held at Codorus State Park in Hanover, Pennsylvania, which happens to be the test site for the club’s Annual Water test. These seminars are usually held in mid-to-late June and are delightful. This year’s event was held on June 14th and 15th; the guest instructor was Cheryl Dondino. Calza and I headed up a day early and stayed in our favorite dog friendly hotel in York. It is just a short drive from York to Hanover. This year’s Water Seminar started bright and early on Saturday morning. A session just for Beginners was held after everybody had a chance to get acquainted. The term Beginner was apt, as it was intended for those with dogs who weren’t yet ready to go consider trying for a WD (Water Dog title.) The areas covered were very basic, like retrieving a bumper thrown in the water, or swimming to a boat. Each individual handler / dog team worked in individual areas on an individual basis with the instructors. CNC members with extensive Water Test experience served as stewards. CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 8 CNC WATER TRAINING SEMINAR After lunch, what could be called the “Intermediate” training session began. During this session, specific exercises in the Junior Water Test were covered. Exercises from the more advanced tests were covered on Sunday morning. Again, specific exercises were practiced with each handler and dog. The training was rather rigorous; all the participants appeared to appreciate it, though! Many thanks to Cheryl Dondino for being a first-rate instructor during an educational event. -Brad Cole CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 9 CNC WATER TRAINING SEMINAR -pictures submitted by Brad Cole CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 10 OTIS AID TO RESCUE CNC Rescue Thanks! Lezli and Bennett Alford! for their! $1,000 donation to the OAR Fund! in Honor of! Cindy Flowers, Kathy Hamilton & Nicki Alford! Our gifts of love from Otis.! ! Otis's short life was like a pebble in the water! and continues to send out ripples of love and friendship. One day an old man was walking down the beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a young man picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. As the old man approached the young man, he asked, "Why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?" The young man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. The old man exclaimed, "But there must be thousands of starfish! How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked down at the starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he said," It makes a difference to this one!" Over the past three years, we lost our Greater Swiss Mountain Dog to Hemangio, our Saint Bernard to OS, and our other Saint this past March to Hemangio also. We decided to foster a large breed dog and were approved through Dogs XL Rescue to foster. As we watched the site for a dog that would fit into our pack--Sailor's profile was posted. We knew we wanted to adopt him. Can't believe how lucky we are! Sailor is three years old. He was transported to Baltimore from Missouri, where we picked him up. He is an absolute gem! When he came to us, he was Heart Worm positive, Hook Worm positive and had Ehrichlia. He has had all of his treatments and we only have two more weeks to go in keeping him "quiet". Quite a feat that has been! We are really looking forward to starting his carting, and will see if he likes the water! Sailor lives with his adopted 11-year-old female Cocker who was rescued from a puppy mill at the age of 10. She is blind in her right eye and doesn't hear well from years of chronic ear infections. Sailor also lives with our 10- year-old adopted Doxy who was paralyzed at the age of three. He was surrendered to rescue shortly after that. He was eight when we adopted him. He has a cart and two special beds and he's a happy character! Sailor also lives with 2 rescue kitty cats. They are quite a pack and all get along amazingly well!! Sailor and friend CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 16 CNC NEWBIE NEWFS We met some of you at Spring Fun Day. We had a ball!! It was wonderful to meet such dedicated Newfie people and to see all of the beautiful dogs!! We look forward to the next event! Thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome! This is a special breed of dog and we are grateful to have a Newfie in our lives! Kindest Regards, Wendy and Peter Flerlage Sailor Sailor and his BFF’s CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 17 CNC NEWF NOTES I have three Brownie Girl Newfs, all rescues from Autumn Acres Newfoundland Rescue in Missouri. ! ! ! Pudge was the first Brownie and she just turned 10. Posey came next and she just turned 9. Pansy was the last to join us, but her age is unknown. Pansy was the worst rescue out of the three.. She was heartworm positive, weighed in at 59 pounds full grown, had MRSA (flesh eating bacteria) which caused her to be blind in one eye and deaf in one ear. Her front teeth were so decayed from bad malnutrition, that hey had to all be removed. She has four molars in the back, but still enjoys her food. She has gained close to 70 pounds since her arrival. About a week after her arrival she went into a false pregnancy status, and we took her to the vet and found out she was NOT pregnant but had bullets in her chest. No surgery required, and the good news was that Pansy was not having pups. It took about a year to get Pansy straightened out, but she is doing really well now. All the three girls are community ambassadors and attend special events to raise money for the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center. They all enjoy taking walks and swimming. They are really good at socializing and eating. :) I am also fostering Daisy, the Landseer through CNC. She is seven years old and a very active dock diver! Never say seven is old, because this girl can outrun and outswim anyone.....ha ha! -Alesia from Summerdale, Home of the Brownies Pudge CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 18 Pansey Posey Daisy CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 19 Enzo learns to pull his cart!! The very handsome and talented Enzo is owned by Judith Van Dyke. CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # Jim and Banjo 20 “I still have the leads and collars, the feeding bowls of all my Newfies, these together with four cigar boxes with their ashes in are all I have to remind me of twenty wonderful years during which they were my constant companions. There are also the few photos on the dining room wall and if you look at my Twitter page you will see them in situ as I enjoy them. It was after I had already written five fictional books that I felt ready for book based closely on these years, I altered very little by way of the story or the action of the dogs it would have been wrong to alter anything about their individual characters…. In my book Life With My Newfoundlands I have tried to show my approach to living with them and the huge return I received from them.” Sybil Powell available from Amazon as a Kindle Edition ($5) and as a paperback ($10.50) CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 21 C N C B O D M e e t i n g M i n u t e s J U N E 2014 ! CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 23 Rescue – Kathy Paxton (for Donna McConn) • • Bear Foot - Bear has chronic long-term osteoarthritis which most likely occurred from a road injury many years ago. It causes trouble for him using stairs and walking. The foster has started taking him for short walks, which was approved by the vet, to strengthen and help continue with his weight loss. Had Fosters take ortho vet for an evaluation to see about getting the temporary support done for his front leg as discussed at the last BOD Meeting. He did not recommend it. He instead recommends Laser treatment and Adequan injections. He already received one Laser treatment while he was there. o The recommendation is 6-8 Laser treatments. o Pricing for the Laser Treatments: 6 treatment-$325 ($54.17 per treatment); 8 treatments - $400 ($50.00 per treatment). Adequan injections are recommended in conjunction with the Laser treatments. o Pricing for Adequan: Would be less expensive to buy a bottle. He would need 3-4 bottles. Price per bottle-$110. Need BOD approval for these procedures and would like to start ASAP. Bear is doing so much better with his other issues. His skin looks great and his hair is growing back. He averages 6 hours without having an accident in the house and rarely has one at night anymore. This is the last step to his recovery. Bear was neutered Wednesday, June 4 by Airpark Animal Hospital. Approval for Laser Treatments only, as a discussion on shots was considered not warranted at this time. This approval was completed by BOD through email previous to this meeting and needed to be ratified. A motion to ratify and approve decision to give Bear Laser Treatments only (KP/DR) This month two new rescues were brought in: • Bear #2 is a 1-year old Landseer. Purchased him from a possible Amish breeder in Ohio. Bear was vetted and neutered at Airpark. He is ready for adoption and Rescue has a potential adopter in Virginia. Chuck will do a home visit the weekend of the 21st to make sure Bear gets along with their dogs. • Fletcher is a 9-month old Black Newf that was purchased from a BYB (Back Yard Breeder). He entered CNC Rescue due to financial reasons. Fletcher was born with a bum leg. According to general Vet: The leg bones do not line up and the knee is not properly formed. There is significant strengthening of the left leg due to compensation for many months. Dr. Kable does not believe there is anything a surgeon can do to correct these conditions. Vet’s opinion is to wait and see. Recommend to use Deramax as needed for pain, but not daily. Watch as Newf grows and see what happens. He has been compensating for the bad leg and has learned how to walk and run. If the pain increases and he has trouble using that leg CNC and Vet can reevaluate the situation. There is a couple interested in adopting. . Updates on fosters/adoptions: Dr. Walker at Blue Ridge Vets checked Barefoot/Bearfoot. He recommended Laser Therapy, which was approved by the BOD. He has started the treatments. He will get the treatments 2 times per week for a month. Bear still needs to be let out every 5-6 hours to urinate. Because of his age this will most likely never change. He can go all night sometimes but about once per week he will have an accident. He does bark when he needs to go out. CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 24 He completed the anti-biotic for the possible urinary tract infection. He has his last bath for a while and continues to do well. He has been on a fish no grain diet. We do not have any potential adopters. • Daisy has been checked for numerous issues for her skin and everything has come back negative. She continues to get at least 2 baths per week. Because of her significant weight loss the vet recommended a prescription diet to help her gain and retain weight. The diet has worked and she is slowly gaining needed weight. We will keep her on this formula for a month and then slowly change her to another food. Because of her skin issues we will go back to a fish grain free diet. There is another type of prescription food that might better benefit her but it is only available on line–Rayne Foods. DMC will look into it. Daisy’s fur is at least growing back, but she still has red skin and smells. The foster donated a visit to a dermatologist for Daisy. Her diagnosis was yeast and staff infection. No private adoptions were done this month. • Sunshine – Chris Gorsuch KP is looking into Sympathy card from Spider Web for loss of your pet for male and female versions. • Ways and Means • Needs New Chairperson. BOD will look for new chair. Website – Chuck Basham • Up to date. Williamsburg Annual Membership Luncheon and Parade – Dotty Hudson/Cathy Borklund A Storybook Christmas,” Saturday, December 6, 2014 o Parade start: 8:30 AM o Application (fee $25) due October 6th, I will need to attend a meeting over summer. Recommendation of menu – Virginia/southern menu. (Brunswick stew, Ham Biscuits, etc…). Buffet style. “Encore” to cater. BOD will subsidize some of cost. LaQuinta Suites is set and has already blocked rooms. • • • • Working Dog – Julia Sharkey Draft Dog o JVD sent out email request in May. o Scott Rainy Draft Test Chair. Julie Sharkey will mentor him in the position. o Still need a Secretary o Require 4 month lead in for NCA Water Test o Chair will be Karin Bystol • • CNC#Bear%Fare###################################################Early#summer#######################################################Issue#108# # 25 o JVD will co-secretary with Diane Weber o Need more volunteers, email and face book requests sent this month. Old Business Rescue Luncheon at Air Park. June 4, 2014 – Kathy Paxton o Yesterday went splendidly!! Everyone was very appreciative. o Total spent $245.39 and we still have paper stuff for next year. o We should note – in the last 4 weeks we have had discounts at Airpark double what we just spent. • New Business: Greg Strong Seminar –Rose Miller request a.
