Conservation Rooflights
Lumen Light
The Lumen Light offers a range of six standard sizes which are
available from stock for next day delivery. If you are working to a
tight deadline these standard sizes can be linked together using our
capping section. Linking the Lumen Light offers the benefit of

springs to hold the opening section open in case of emergency.
All of our rooflights offer a high specification of glazing that incorporates a 4mm
toughened safety outer leaf with ‘Pilkington Activ’ self-clean, a 16mm argon gas filled
cavity and a 4mm inner leaf of Pilkington K toughened. The units are bedded and
fronted by hand, using silicone to resemble the traditional putty appearance so often
found on original Victorian rooflights.
In addition, all of our Lumen rooflights are supplied with an anthracite Valchromat
interior liner and a solid brass or chrome winding mechanism.
*Zintec, British Steel's electro-zinc coated steel sheet and coil, offers a number of advantages over ordinary uncoated mild steel. Zintec's corrosion resistance protects
the steel in transit, in storage, during the production process, and in the finished product.

Lumen Extra Light
This system gives you the freedom to open up your roof space
without the constraints of standard sizes. We can manufacture to
suit your design and offer the flexibility to work with you to

achieve your requirements. For dimensions smaller than 2000mm
wide or 1800mm high, we can manufacture the rooflight with a
single outer frame. For larger sizes we would use our unique link
system whereby a rooflight is manufactured to your overall
dimensions using multiple frames to provide a virtually seamless
row of rooflights. Unlike the linking of standard sizes, this
interlocking design considerably reduces the amount of visible
steel between each casement and increases the amount of light
and ventilation. Casements can be opening or fixed, have
multiple or no glazing bars* and as with all our standard range,
can be operated either with our hand mechanisms or electrically.
*within manufacturing tolerances
Note: Designers are advised to check their own details for compliance with all applicable Local Authority by-laws, Acts of Parliament and British Standards Codes of Practice.

Where the base of the frame is easily reached,
we have designed a beautifully crafted winder
mechanism for smooth and easy opening.
With a particularly compact design and high efficiency, the drive requires only a small amount
of space for mounting position.
High quality materials and diligent engineering facilitates a reliable and unobtrusive system.

A range of blinds has been specifically
designed for Lumen rooflights.
Also available in 24 carat gold plated.
Pleated blinds are the most frequently used
type and generally gives the best results.
The blinds consist of fabric which is folded as
concertina. Usually the fabric is made from
polyester or composite materials and normally
has a reflective backing to reduce heat gain.
Fabrics are made in different densities to give
more or less shading.
The pleats are normally of a 25mm or 20mm
pitch. These blinds are usually pole operated
but can be motorised. The advantages are
neat fixings and good coverage of the glass.
Our standard range of blinds can be
motorized for less accessible locations.

Case Studies
North Devon
The conversion of this 18th century Grade 2 Listed stable block
was overseen by English Heritage and uses ten bespoke long and
narrow ‘Lumen Extra Light’ rooflights to allow ample light into three
maisonettes. The three maisonettes will provide accommodation for
the housekeepers and trained staff running Youlston Park Manor
which offers traditional luxury breaks.
The Lumen Cast
Conservation Rooflight
The Lumen range also includes the Cast Conservation Rooflight; a top hung rooflight
cast with the traditional detailing of a 19th Century original. Manufactured using
durable aluminium the Cast Conservation Rooflight offers excellent resistance to
weathering and is polyester powder coated to RAL 9005 matt black as standard.
Double glazed units are manufactured using a 4mm toughened outer pane, 14mm
argon gas filled spacer bar and a 4mm toughened low E inner pane. The units are
bedded and fronted by hand, using silicone to resemble the traditional putty
appearance so often found on original Victorian rooflights.
Available from stock in three sizes, these opening rooflights have a sculptured
glazing bar and are weatherstrip sealed against draughts. The casement is secured
to lugs on the outer frame using stainless bolts and nylock nuts and is opened with
a solid brass or chrome winding mechanism. In addition the rooflights are supplied
West Sussex
with a fitted interior liner.
This project, located in a Conservation Area, required two
rooflights that had to be installed from the inside and then
fixed shut. The bespoke Lumen Extra Light range was chosen
for its traditional appearance to sympathise with the
architecture of this remakable 17th Century property.

Surrey
This charming period cottage utilises
the standard range of Lumen rooflights
to provide ample light to a loft
conversion. Used as a play area
and bedroom for a young child,
the rooflights are fitted with short
winders to restrict the opening distance
of the casements. These rooflights also
make use of our range of pleated
blackout blinds.
The Lumen Cast Conservation can be used in
all types of roof and is specifically designed for use
in conservation areas, historic and listed buildings.
FAQ
Why should I choose Lumen
conservation rooflights over
other traditional skylights
available on the internet?
Whilst there are many suppliers
of traditional skylights we believe
that our attention to detail makes
the Lumen range of rooflights
stand out from the rest. Firstly, we
have chosen to manufacture our
products in the UK and have
recently set up an additional
factory in Devon to assist with
production and finishing.
Manufacturing Lumen at our
factory rather than somewhere in
Asia or Eastern Europe gives us
total control of not just production
but also quality. This also allows
us to keep our delivery times to
a minimum. However, it's not just
the UK manufacturing that we are
proud of. Our designers have
opted for the highest specification
in all of the components used in
Lumen rooflights. Our double
glazed units are manufactured
in the UK by Pilkington and offer
Pilkington K toughened glass,
argon gas fill and Pilkington Activ
self clean as standard on every
product. Our winding mechanisms
are solid brass and offer an
increased width of the spindle
to ensure the opening section
doesn't bounce when closing.
The clip used to release the
winder from the opening section
(for emergency access) has also
been improved to make it easier
to use. Each rooflight is supplied
with a fitted interior liner in black
to give the product a finishing
touch. We decided to supply the
liner fitted to make the installation
process easier. The liners are also
manufactured by hand in Devon
and each has a unique tag to
identify when the rooflight was
made and by whom. This means
that should you ever have a
question about your rooflight, we
will be able to identify all the
relevant details about it. Whilst it
may appear that all rooflights are
the same, we pride ourselves on
making more effort to ensure your
home has the very best. We work
closely with the SPAB and fully
appreciate the appropriate use
of rooflights. Many conservation
specialists will argue that the
smaller the rooflight the better but
we have made a considerable
effort to design a product that
is not only sympathetic to its
surroundings but is manufactured
to last for many years.
Is your cast rooflight really
a cast product?
Yes it is. In actual fact we are
able to offer a traditional rooflight
in either our double glazed cast
aluminium version or the single
glazed cast iron type. For further
details please call our team on
01403 860040.
Do your range of conservation
rooflights have a centre bar
like my original ones have?
All of our traditional conservation
rooflights have a genuine glazing
bar. This particular design feature
is integral to the rooflight and not
only provides a more authentic
look but offers increased strength
for the opening section. Other
manufacturers of conservation roof
windows have opted to remove
the traditional bar in favour of
sticking something to the double
glazed unit. Whilst this may
provide a minimal benefit to
the thermal performance, we
at Lumen believe it significantly
detracts from the appearance
and moves the product even
further away from the original.
Are your Lumen traditional
roof windows double glazed?
The Lumen range of conservation
rooflights are supplied with fitted
double glazed units. Not only are
they double glazed but they offer
the benefits of toughened glass
and argon gas. The steel
roofligfht includes Pilkington K
Glass and Pilkington Activ self
clean. This is supplied as
standard on all Lumen steel
rooflights.
When choosing a unit
manufacturer for Lumen rooflights
we decided to use one of the
world's largest manufacturers of
glass and glazing products;
Here's why: - Founded in 1826
and a member of NSG group
from June 2006, Pilkington is a
leader in the global Flat Glass
industry - 6.4 million tonnes
annual output of float glass 36,000 employees worldwide Manufacturing operations in 26
countries - The Float process,
invented by Sir Alastair Pilkington
in 1952 is now the world
standard for high quality glass
manufacture. Inventors of the
world's first self-cleaning glass Pilkington Activ™. With this kind
of support, we know that we are
able to utilise the very best in
glass and glazing technology for
the Lumen range of rooflights.
In the interest of continuous product development it may be necessary to amend specifications without altering our literature.
We have been advised that
we might require planning
permission for installation of
a conservation roof window.
Please can you advise.
We would always advise that
you check with your local
authority before installing Lumen
conservation rooflights. There are
many factors that will decide
whether you are granted
permission to use rooflights and
if your property is Listed or in a
Conservation Area you may find
restrictions concerning the type of
rooflight that is allowed.
Fortunately, the Lumen range of
conservation rooflights replicate
a traditional Victorian pattern.
In addition the low profile design
will ensure that your Lumen
rooflight will sit flush with
your roofline.
In your brochure you quote
a clear viewable area, an
internal rafter and an overall
size. Please can you explain
how I size the rooflight
required.
As the Lumen rooflight is fixed
into the sides of the rafter, this
is normally the most critical size.
The clear viewable size is the
glazed area that is viewable from
the inside. This measurement takes
into account the fitted interior liner
that is positioned inside the
opening section. The overall size
is given to inform the installation
team just how much space is
required on the outside of the
roof. However, much of the outer
section will be covered by the
tiles or slates so this is not to be
taken as the viewable size from
outside. When using one of the
standard stock sizes, you will
need to fir your rafters round the
dimensions of the rooflight. If you
want a conservation style roof
window to suit your project, we
can manufacture bespoke sizes.
In this case, you can provide us
with either, viewable, rafter or
overall size and we can work out
the other sizes for you.
How long is the guarantee?
15 YEARS: The outer frame and
opening leaf, polyester powder
coating, stainless steel fixing
screws and weatherstripping.
