Nathan Neil Rehberg, aged 20, and Justin Chad Rehberg, aged 19, appeared briefly in Windsor Provincial Court Monday, March 1. The pair had been charged with public incitement of hatred, mischief and uttering threats after someone lit a cross on fire and uttered racial slurs at the home of Shane Howe and Michelle Lyon Sunday Feb 20. Cst. Sullivan of the Windsor Rural RCMP said the new charge was included because it “fit the case.” Monday’s arraignment hearing was adjourned until March 2 and the pair remains in custody. The charge of incitement of hatred carries a maximum jail sentence of two years. Public Prosecutor Bill Ferguson couldn’t comment on whether or not the Crown would be seeking the maximum sentence should the case go to trial and the accused found guilty. “At this point until I sit down and talk with the RCMP I really can’t say what direction we will take.” Howe and Lyon were present at the Windsor Court House Monday but were not able to observe the proceeding because of delays due to added security measures. Love walk celebrates diversity, unity By Nadine Eagles-Harvie THE HANTS JOURNAL NovaNewsNow.com was a feel good kind of day in IthetWindsor, Saturday Feb 27 when Little Town of Big Firsts became the Little Town of Big Love. Men and Women, boys and girls, people of all ages and backgrounds gathered to support Shane Howe and Michelle Rehberg during the Walk of Love rally. They came by the hundreds and they left with a renewed sense of hope. One lane from Victoria Park to the Exhibition Arena on Wentworth Road was blocked to traffic as the approximately 250 individuals marched in unity, waving flags, and anti-racism signage. Many motorists en route honked horns and waved to show their support. It was a fitting finale to African Heritage Month. What could have been a collective act of retribution toward the alleged perpetrators of Sundays hate crime, was, as hoped, a celebration of diversity and community pride amongst neighbors. In his address MP Scott Brison said it is time to stand together, shoulder to shoulder in the fight against prejudice. “Equality and diversity are Canadian qualities. What happened last Sunday is not Canadian. We all know the pain of prejudice and the power of diversity.” Brison said the cross-burning incident left him feeling sick, a feeling he said was quickly replace by one of love that day. “What we’ve done here is replace a negative with a positive.” Howe said he was overwhelmed by the show of support. “I’m tongue tied. I don’t even have words for the amount of happiness I feel right now.” The Rehberg, Howe children joined their parents that afternoon and enjoyed a moment in the spotlight. Some had come all the way from metro to attend. Health practitioner and writer Jessica March said it was well worth the trip. “We were so glad that someone organized this. We were horrified by what happened and are glad people are standing up for peace.” Hants West MLA Chuck Porter called cross-burning event, “unacceptable”. “It’s been an incredible week of unfolding events. We need to eradicate racism.” Mayor Paul Beazley along with Town CAO Louis Couthino and Deputy Mayor Laurie Murley showed a united front. “This is a big thing for our town and it’s important that we show our support. We’re proud of this community and culture but what happened last Sunday shows that we need to do better.” Local rapper Ryan Hunter performed, along with Sandra MacDonald who recited a poem by Jean Anthony. Katie MacDonald sang “Oh Canada” and the Black National Anthem with great support and enthusiasm from the crowd. When the march arrived back at the Victoria Park many chose to dance, clap and sing along to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and “Heal the World”. Local young people helped set the stage for the post-rally party with unabated enthusiasm. Many indicated a desire to recreate the event on an annual basis. Many words were spoken that afternoon and some references were made to the pair of young men who now face charges of incitement to hate. However, Pastor Raymond Upshaw of the Three Mile Plains Baptist Church said it best when he quoted from scripture, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” Forgiveness was indeed in the hearts of all that day. 4 Hants Journal News I The March 4, 2010 New charges in cross-burning… Cont. from page 1 The Hall home on Barr Settlement Road Saturday. Neighbours remember murder victims as quiet, country couple THE HANTS JOURNAL [email protected] A portrait of a quiet country couple emerged from neighbours of Ellen and James Russell Hall, who were found dead in their spacious home in Barr Settlement, near East Gore last Friday. RCMP completed autopsies last weekend and say the couple was murdered but won’t say how except that it wasn’t random. Kerry Godin, of 1295 Barr Settlement Road, three doors away from the victim’s home, remembers the couple as friendly but quiet. “Rustie would say ‘remember I’m only three doors away if you need anything’,” said Godin. “Now I feel bad because I’m only three doors away and I can’t help him.” Neighbours say Rustie went to work every day for a glass contractor, but were unable to supply details. Godin remembers Ellen fondly for bringing her Christmas tree saplings from the tree farm where she worked and for sharing pictures of her recently-born grandchildren. Both victims were 53 and had a son and daughter, neighbours say. The son had been recently serving with the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan. Shawn Lacey, farm manager for Scothorn Farms, said Ellen worked for his company for about three years and had recently been laid off after the Christmas rush and wouldn’t have been back until April. “She was a good employee, a very intelligent girl,” said Lacey. Ellen was one of 15 to 20 people working under Lacey so he didn’t get to know her very well, but they got along. “She talked about her kids and her grandkids,” he said. Lacey, just a year older than Rustie, remembers him well from their days at Hants East Rural High. Though they didn’t see each other often, they were both motorbike riders and he’d see the couple at Scothorn Christmas parties. “At our Christmas parties he was always well behaved.” “We all knew he was a member of the East Coast Riders (motorcycle club) but just because you ride a bike doesn’t mean you’re a bad guy.” Other media reports say members of the East Coast Riders formed a new chapter of the New Brunswick-based Bacchus Motorcycle Club, which the RCMP describe as an organized crime group with about 50 members. But neighbours, including a 13-yearold boy, remember him for charity fundraisers, kids’ fairs and fireworks, sponsored by the East Coast Riders. “It’s not under good circumstances that they had a passing,” said a woman with Scothorn Farms, who asked not to be named. We trained with Afro Canadians on the team and stayed in the same room with them. Even at school on the basketball team it was never a problem.” He said the recent cross-burning incident has polarized students at Avon View. One of his friends, of Puerto Rican descent, has been reluctant to talk to him lately. After the weekend incident, teachers read newspaper accounts to their classes and discussed them, he said. There had been bad feelings between the Rehbergs and Howe over several incidents over the past 18 months, said Benjamin. “But if Justin and Nathan were actually racist, something would have happened before now.” Several of his fellow students took the day off school to attend the hearing Monday. But the student body has had mixed emotions over the incident. Committed mischief Breathalyzer offence William Joseph Ash, 20, of Lakelands, was sentenced to time already served for committing mischief by causing damage under $5,000 to an automobile. Windsor Ash entered a guilty plea to the charge on Feb. 23, 2010 and was sentenced to one day in custody deemed served. Ash committed the offence in Mount Uniacke on Sept. 25, 2009. Justin Joseph Davis, 23, of Halifax, was fined for operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content exceeding legal limits. Davis entered a guilty plea to the charge on Feb. 23, 2010. Judge Claudine MacDonald fined Davis a total of $1,380 and has given him until Feb. 28, 2011 to pay or spend 20 days in jail. He was also prohibited for driving for one-year. Davis committed the offence in Windsor on Jan. 24, 2010 for driving while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80 mgs per 100 ml of blood. His readings were 130 and 120. Andrea brings many years experience in the property restoration industry. Scotian Hikers hike in all weather conditions, year-round. Despite the fears of local politicians that outside agitators would turn it into a violent, vengeful protest, the people who came out for the walk— several from Halifax and other communities— not only kept their cool but had such a good time they’d like to do it again. That such a disturbing incident could result in such a peaceful, happy outcome is cause for celebration in itself. Maybe racism is actually a thing of the past. We fervently hope so. And we’d like to see a parade like this next year. However unlike most people in Hants West I do not think this the issue is over now that two people have been charged. I believe it is the education system in Nova Scotia that is lacking as we need to have mandatory African-Nova Scotia history courses for our children starting as young as possible. We need them to include the “good and the bad history”. Our children need to learn about the Black-Nova Scotian experience, the Mi’kmaq history, the labour history, the mining history as well as our social history. Celebrity sightings include, Jacques Rogge, the IOC president; Juan Antonio Samaranch, former IOC president; Dick Pound, former WADA (drug agency) head; Princess Anne, the King of Denmark, King Frederick; the former deposed King of Greece, King Konstantine and a couple of princes from Jordan and William of Orange from the Netherlands. The place is a locked-down facility with heavy security and tons of police all around! Everyone that enters has to go thru security just like the airport. The volunteers were given a free pass to the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony and it was awesome! You must have seen it and it must have made you proud to be a Canadian. Haven't found very many Nova Scotians who are volunteers. Ran into one from Halifax who just retired from the athletic department at SMU. Also met three people from Halifax who are paid employees working in accreditation and security. Most of the people I'm working with are from the Greater Vancouver area and Victoria. FARM HOUSE RENTAL Professional couple looking to rent property in Windsor Area. Band member David Howells says ETC is a new brand of band devoted to giving back to the community. “What we want to do is identify ourselves as a musical group with charities and fundraisers so when we step out to play the audience knows we are working with and for community organizations.” With the aid of local sponsors the ETC band plans host a series of concerts throughout the year in aid of local charities in Hants County and the Annapolis Valley. Each series will end with a gala event and cheque presentation to a feature organization. The championship game will start at 6:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2010. The loser of this championship game can still advance to Millwood with a win over the # 4 seed from the Capital Region. A member of the Avalanche Coaching Staff Maurice Harvey of Brooklyn said there is no real heavy favorite heading into the tournament, it will essentially boil down to how badly the teams really want a win. The opening two days will be round-robin. Harvey said, “the potential is there for an all Windsor Western Zone final. We played Kings-Edgehill twice earlier in the year and, make no mistake, they do have a good team but both games resulting in victories, the Avalnache did not have their # 1 goaltender in the line-up in Joe Hines.” Harvey said, “Hines has literally stood on his head this season in leading the Avalanche to tournament victories and is literally one of the best high school goalies in the province.” Fans are encouraged to get out at some point this weekend to see some exciting and breathtaking hockey at the Western Zone Sr. Boys Hockey Championship in Windsor at the Hants Exhibition Arena. Royals could face elimination Thursday in Windsor Depending on what transpired in the third game of their Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League's Best of seven-divisional semi-final game with the St. Margaret’s Bay Ducks, the Windsor Royals could be facing elimination Thursday evening in Windsor in Game four of the series scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start at the Hants Exhibition arena. The Royals, despite outshooting the Ducks in both games were hammered 9-3 at home in game one at home this past Friday evening and then went to St. Margaret's Bay Saturday evening where they fell behind 4-0 by the 5:19 mark of the second period before rallying somewhat with three goals, two from T.J. Boyd and another from Sam Webb to bring the Royals to within one but that is as far as they could come against a strong skating Ducks team. The Ducks with their 5th goal of the game at the 9:59 mark of the third period sealed the victory and gave them a 2-0 lead in the series. Friday's game in Windsor got off to a poor start and starting goalie Fraser Bailey was replaced after allowing the game's first three goals but it did not get any better for the hometown team. The Bay held period leads of 4-1 and 6-3. Cameron Gordon, Cody White short-handed and Claude Lemothe scored for the Royals. 4212136 Ironically enough, the Valley High School Hockey League has no league playoffs with teams advancing to Level 1, 2 or 3 of provincial playdown hockey in early March. This is what will begin March 4 at the Hants Exhibition Arena as the Avonview Avalanche of Windsor will host the Western Zone Level 1 Tournament March 4, 5 and 6 in Windsor. However the Pumas knew what incredibly strong competition they would be facing when they played the Yarmouth Jr. Girls team and were delighted with their efforts this past weekend. The Pumas struck fast and early Friday afternoon in their home gymnasium destroying NorthEast Kings by 44 points and advancing to Friday evening's championship game between the winner of the Wolfville and West Hants game which turned out to be West Hants. If it had not been for the big hole West Hants dug for themselves early in the championship game, the outcome could have been much different. The Pumas hung on and defeated the West Hants Sabres 45-38 after leading the Sabres 26-11 at half-time and pushing their lead to 20 points before Hants West caught a second breath early in the second half. Lauren Jodrey who played the game of her life the previous weekend in helping her Puma teamates garner homecourt advantage for the district finals led Hantsport again scoring 14 points while Kyleigh Ford and Molly Johnson both nettted 11 in the championship win. Jodrey the previous weekend played a game for the ages as Hantsport edged West Hants 48-46 to earn home-court advantage for the playoffs before a nearly packed gymnasium of students, parents and grandparents. Jodrey's flawless performance in her team's 48-46 victory saw her collect more than half of her team's points as she finished with 25. She did this with critical baskets and timeless foul shooting. In Friday's championship game, Allison Boyd playing her final Jr. High Scool Basketball game scored 29 points for the losing Sabres. West Hants advanced to the championship game with a thrilling 44-36 win over Wolfville. West Hants was playing without their leading rebounder Haley Guild who was vacationing with ther parents but the rest of the team took charge. Maude Greer netted 8 points with 4 baskets at critical times. The baskets were beautiful outside shots when Wolfville was applying pressure. Keanya Miller on a great passing play made it 38-31 Sabres. Wolfville led at half-time 1211. Allison Boyd finished with 23 points as the Sabres top shooter. The Shooting Stars got off to a horrible start and simply could not find the basket in the first half and it cost them as the Sackville Storm jumped out to a 24-10 lead at halftime and an eventual 45-32 win. The Stars rallied somewhat in the second half scoring fifteen points in the third quarter but it was too little, too late. Allison Boyd netted 17 points and Scarlett Smith 12 in the losing cause. Acadian Intercity Coaches has applied to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to discontinue service between Kentville and Digby and reduce its service between Kentville and Halifax. The board’s hearing into the company’s application was Feb. 24 in Greenwich. A public session was also held Feb. 25 in Digby. Manon Piche, Acadian’s vicepresident of marketing sales and strategic development, told the board, since Orleans Express bought Acadian Lines in 2004, the number of customer trips sold has (except for a small temporary spike in 2008 due to high fuel prices) declined by 19.5 per cent. During that same period, the average price per trip has increased by 27 per cent, mainly to keep pace with the price of fuel. Piche said 2009 “was a terrible year for us,” both in terms of decreased customer trips and an increased average price per trip. “We thought 2010 might be a regain, but our January, 2010 was down 17 per cent from January, 2009,” making for “a difficult situation.” Over the past six years, she said, Acadian has implemented a number of measures to increase efficiency and cut costs. “We feel we’ve done all we can and, our conclusion is, it’s not working. We still have a negative bottom line in the Maritimes.” “Our Nova Scotia network is marginally profitable, but not enough to sustain our service at The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board panel presiding over last week’s Acadian Intercity Coaches hearing in Greenwich included (left to right) Murray Doehler, chair Roland Deveau and Dawna Ring. J.DeCoste current levels. Our main concern is that our operating costs are too high for the revenue we’re generating.” Because “we have to run our buses, and pay rent and salaries whether there are passengers or not,” the company has no choice but to “review the entire network, and reduce where there is limited potential and increase where there is bigger potential.” Specific to the Valley, Acadian Lines points to “an alternative mode of transportation” in the Digby-Kentville corridor in Kings Transit, which “operates on the same route at a much lower price.” Acadian Lines “doesn’t believe there should be two carriers doing the same route. Since we are not profitable in that corridor, we suggest leaving Kings Transit the entire market.” For its part, Kings Transit reminded the board, in a letter from general manager Ron Mullins, it is not in direct competition with Acadian. “We do not accept luggage (no “ storage compartments), we do not have bathrooms on board, we do not provide transportation to major hubs outside the Valley like Halifax, the Halifax airport or New Brunswick; and we do not offer shuttle or charter services. “We are a municipal transit authority that offers rural Nova Scotians accessible transit to The Municipality of Annapolis County had formal intervenor standing at the hearing, represented by Warden Peter Newton and Terry Thibodeau of the Annapolis-Digby Development Agency. In his presentation, Newton noted, according to the 2006 census, 20 per cent of the population of Annapolis County was over 65 years of age (in Digby County, the figure was similar, at 19 per cent). Annapolis County is also “well below the provincial and national average” in terms of per capita disposable and discretionary income. “These numbers and statistics translate into a greater need for accessible public transportaAnnapolis County Warden Peter Newton tion, not the demise of it,” Newton said. “Public work, to school, to medical servic- transportation in rural areas is es or social functions for their dai- often non-existent, and private ly lives.” transportation is often in short Describing Kings Transit as “an supply for the elderly, youth, the essential municipal service,” disabled, those on low incomes Mullins added, “we would hope and those who choose not to own that Acadian Lines continues to cars.” service Kentville to Digby.” He added, “although we do Public transportation in rural areas is often non-existent, and private transportation is often in short supply for the elderly, youth, the disabled, those on low incomes and those who choose not to own cars. Acadian Intercity Coaches was represented by Manon Piche, vice president of marketing sales and strategic development; president and chief administrative officer Sylvain Langis and accounting manager Nancy MacRae. J.DeCoste ” have wonderful private transportation services offered to our residents, these services are overworked and funding is always an issue. Their future is never certain.” Annapolis County residents “are very fortunate” to have Kings Transit, “but this is in no way comparable to Acadian Lines. In actuality, the two services are more of a complement to each other’s clientele,” with Kings Transit “serving a completely different market” more local than regional in scope. Newton suggested, as Acadian is citing financial reasons for abandoning this service, “we ask that they explore new marketing initiatives or a re-examination of their schedules in an effort to increase clientele before making such a drastic and permanent decision.” Correspondence from the public, much of which came from people in Annapolis and Digby counties, agreed Acadian Lines and Kings Transit serve different segments of the population. Bridgetown area resident Clark Morris also found it “ironic that a hearing regarding this issue is held in a location requiring a taxi ride to get from the nearest bus stop.” More than one concerned citizen felt the discontinuation of the Digby to Kentville service would cut off the access of Valley residents to “sensible, reliable and efficient public transportation.” Other letter writers suggested, while Acadian is using as justification for its application the gradual shift of rural Nova Scotians to urban areas, one of the main reasons behind this shift is the gradual erosion of services such as transportation in rural areas like the Valley. The Municipality of the County of Annapolis received special intervenor status into the application by Acadian Intercity Coaches to discontinue its service between Kentville and Digby and reduce its service between Kentville and Halifax. The municipality was represented at the hearing by Warden Peter Newton (left) and Terry Thibodeau of the Annapolis-Digby Development Agency.
