KIWANIS CLUB OF HICKSVILLE
77th ANNIVERSARY JOURNAL
Charter Night
September 27th, 2014
Celebrating 77 Years of
Outstanding Community Service
This journal celebrates Kiwanis. Not just its ideals, but also the people
who make Kiwanis special, its members as well as the people who
support our efforts. We thank everyone who contributed to this journal
and to all our appeals and events. You have given of your hard earned
cash; you have given of your time; you have given of your spirit…
You lent a hand or an ear…If you were there for a Kiwanian, you
were there for Kiwanis.
We live in a world which has become increasingly polarized; A world
in which people are divided by race, ethnicity and socio-economic
differences; a world in which violence sometimes triumphs over love and
diplomacy; a world in which too many still struggle for food and shelter.
While as individuals we may not be able to effect great change, together
we can make miracles. That sense of community is what makes us
whole. It is that very celebration of humanity, that makes us human.
It is in Kiwanis that we find our sense of community; our connection to
that very special sense of selflessness… of caring for others as ourselves.
Through our work in the community we can give to those less fortunate.
Much of our current efforts have focused on supporting the Hicksville
food pantries. We continue to work toward the day where no child will
go to sleep hungry. The current Kiwanis global initiative is to eliminate
maternal and neonatal tetanus - an initiative we support and embrace.
As we look back over the seventy-seven years of service, we applaud the
fine work of years past and look forward to the challenges of our next
seventy-seven years. We know that with your support we will make this
world a better place – one community, one child at a time.
The Kiwanis International Story
Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, January 21, 1915
by professional organizer Allen Browne. The first Kiwanian was a
merchant tailor named Joseph Prance. The original name was “The
Benevolent Order of Brothers,”and its purpose was the mutual exchange of preferred treatment in professional and business dealings.
Within a year, the name had been changed to “Kiwanis,” taken from
a Native American term “Nun Keewanis” which loosely means “Self
Expression.” It had become obvious that the original purpose lacked
appeal for many members. The purpose of the organization thus
became “community service,” a humanitarian concept from which
Kiwanis has never deviated.
While 1937 saw unemployment drop to 14.3%, down 6.7% from
the previous year, the changing politics of Europe and the human
tragedy of the Hindenburg explosion were on the minds of many.
As Americans coped with this changing world, Judy Garland told
“Dear Mr. Gable” that he made her love him, the Golden Gate Bridge
opened, FDR was inaugurated for the second time, “Old Age
Insurance Benefits” was created and Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs filled movie theatres and buoyed the hearts of Americans.
The 1930s expanded the role of government, but government
alone would never be enough. A group of true visionaries understood
that Hicksville deserved a Kiwanis Club. With the support of the
Kiwanis Club of Freeport, the Hicksville Club became a reality when
Kiwanis International issued the formal charter on June 20, 1937.
Hicksville became the third Long Island club, following Hempstead (1)
and Freeport (2).
On July 7, 1987 Kiwanis International Convention delegates
voted to extend membership to women, finally recognizing the valuable
contributions that women make to our society and the contributions
they could make to Kiwanis service to children. By the end of the 198788 administrative year, more than 8,500 women had joined the ranks
of Kiwanis worldwide.
We salute the visionaries who created Kiwanis International and
those who created the Hicksville Club – we are forever in your debt.

Edward G. Saueracker, PhD
this year’s honore for the
Nicholas J. Brigandi Spirit of Giving Award
Whether you call him, Edward,
Eddie, Ed or Uncle Edward, you know
that whatever he commits to, he gives
one-hundred percent – 100% of his
energy, 100% of his generous spirit.
He commits not only to the tasks, but
to the individuals, families, employees,
or volunteers involved.
While we all know Ed in different
arenas with labels such as friend,
neighbor, family member, co-worker,
and employer used to describe the relationship, it is clear that once Edward
welcomes you into his life, you become an important, integral part of his
family. For an only-child, he has built
a wonderful, vibrant extended family,
as evidenced by the outpouring of support this evening and in this journal.
Edward is an outstanding product
of the Hicksville Public Schools graduating in 1974 in the top 4% of his class.
In 1998, the graduating seniors elected
Ed to the Hicksville High School Hall
of Fame. In his usual style Ed used that
opportunity to help others by establishing the “William F. and Carol V. Saueracker Community Service Award” to
honor his parents and help students.
As a college student, Edward was
trained as Hofstra University’s first Peer
Advisor, advising undeclared majors to
register. Ed is very clear that his student years at Hofstra with outstanding,
caring administrators and professors
solidified that a “helping profession”
Ed, Edward, Eddie,
Uncle Edward

for being the best
you can be and

for helping us to
be the best we
can be.
was where his future would be. Upon
graduating Ed received a fellowship to
the Graduate School and University
Center of The City University of New
York where earned his PhD in Economics in 1984.
It is no surprise that even as the
youngest student in his PhD Program,
Ed rose to leadership positions serving
on numerous program committees, as
well as the Graduate Student Council.
In all cases, he advocated on behalf of
his fellow students. Although Ed’s dad
passed away during the writing of his
dissertation, Ed always attributes his
ability to finish to the unwavering support and encouragement he received
from his mom. In 1999 the PhD
Alumni Association of CUNY presented Dr. Edward Saueracker with a
Special Achievement Award. While
his scholarly work was noted, his humanitarian efforts were the main focus
of the presentation.
Throughout his professional career,
the focus has been on helping others—
First at Hofstra, where after graduation,
Ed was hired as an adjunct assistant
professor teaching economics to undergraduate and graduate students.
Ed’s classrooms were exciting learning
laboratories where students were encouraged to become informed,
thoughtful learners - inspired by Ed’s
love of learning; love of teaching. –
Next at CUNY Baruch College where
he was Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of the Center for the
Study of Business and Government.
He not only helped his undergraduate
students learn microeconomics, but supervised graduate research assistants
providing counseling and guidance –
Lastly, at SUNY Empire State College
Ed helped thousands of students realize their dreams of college degrees. Because of his outstanding work, The
SUNY Empire State College Foundation presented him with an award for
“Outstanding Professional Service.”
Ed was seen college-wide as the “goto-guy.” Ed was asked by the college
president to manage an extensive research project reviewing the training
courses of the Ford Motor Company
and was tapped by the college Office
of Academic Affairs to support a second college center, and was essential
to the success of the college’s Staten Island Unit.
Edward’s work in the community
has not just been in Kiwanis. Ed served
for several years on the Hicksville Post
Office Advisory Committee. As a
member he advised the post master on
community concerns and issues to improve service and communication. He
was also a board member of HELPAID -DIRECTION, an addictions counseling agency. Although the agency
eventually needed to close, Ed worked
tirelessly with county commissioners to
ensure a seamless transition for clients,
as well as employees. He was also
elected trustee of the Hicksville Public
Library rising to President. As president
he was instrumental in assisting the director with major renovation of the library. Edward understands that a
library is more than a repository, it is a
vibrant educational institution. To that
end he led the board to offer educational benefits to support staff, as well
as the professional staff. He not only
wanted the library to be the best it
could be, he wanted to help the sup-
port staff with college educations that
could lead to becoming librarians and
assist the librarians with advanced degrees. This investment in people is evidenced in all of Edward’s service
Ed’s commitment to Kiwanis is unparalleled. For twenty-one years, Ed
has given selflessly to build and
strengthen our club, support our members and service our local and global
communities. Edward is our “man
who came to dinner” – well, actually to
lunch. Ed was invited as a speaker to
discuss higher education opportunities
for adult learners and he never left. Ed
was inducted the next month and eagerly agreed to serve as assistant secretary producing a weekly newsletter.
Over the years Ed has served as president eight times and an officer or director for twenty-one years.
His Kiwanis service has not been
limited to our club. Ed was an active
member of the Kiwanis Pediatric Center Foundation for over ten years, rising to Executive Vice President before
leaving the board. When the Friends
of the KPTC was in crisis, Ed was
asked to help and for 12 years coordinated the very successful Chinese Auctions that supplied hundreds of
pediatric trauma kits locally and nationally. Because of his exemplary
work, the board named him a KPTC
Fellow. For many years Ed was a certified Kiwanis trainer. With his Kiwanis
mentor and friend, Patty LeCompte he
provided leadership and communications training to incoming club presidents and secretaries. They trained in
the Bronx, Brooklyn, and across Long
Island. It was no surprise that the Kiwanis Governor of the New York Dis-
trict, Sue Ganey wanted Ed on the
training team. The success of many of
our clubs can be traced back to the fine
work of the LeCompte-Saueracker
team. Edward committed to helping
clubs, members and recipients of Kiwanis service be the best they could be.
Although the last eight years have
not been easy for Ed- very stressful
working conditions, his mom’s health
issues, he had a stroke, developed a
heart condition and finally retiring from
Empire State College. Retirement has
been wonderful for Edward – as well
for everyone who is the recipient of his
largesse. This past spring, Ed had to
undergo triple coronary bypass surgery. While he was concerned about
the possibility of another stroke, he
was more concerned that he hadn’t
completed the baskets for the April
Chinese Auction. When the surgeon
asked to delay the surgery one week,
Ed saw this as his opportunity to complete or almost complete all the baskets. Clearly no heart operation was
going to diminish his commitment to
the auction. For those of you who
joined us that evening you saw Ed in
his master of ceremonies/auctioneer
role. What you didn’t see was a morning of basket loading, unloading, and
arranging alongside fellow Kiwanians
and volunteers. I’m sure you’ve heard
Ed say, “I never ask anyone to do
something, I wouldn’t do myself” –
Clearly!
ED, THANK YOU FOR LOVING,
LIVING AND SHARING KIWANIS
Our very best wishes to our dear friend

and all of our journal supporters know how much your support of
our Kiwanis Club means to me. Because of your generosity, we can

I know without the people who love and lift me up, I would not be

with each of you. This evening would have no meaning for me if I
couldn’t share it with the people I love.

…And Lastly, Thank You
On behalf of the children and families whose lives you
have made better through you generosity, we thank you.
Your support this evening for our work, both locally and
globally is greatly appreciated.
Your attendance here tonight tells us that we are on the
right track and that others commend our efforts. It is that
generosity of spirit that inspires us to do good works. It also
tells President Ed that his leadership of our club and foundation has strengthened our presence in the community.
To those who sent personal journal ads, you are truly
special people and have a special place in our hearts.
To our business and organizational supporters, we are
overwhelmed by your support of our Kiwanis club.
We ask everyone here tonight to please patronize those
businesses and organizations that are included in the
journal.
Together we DO make a difference!
