What would your
mother say?!
People who
eat weird
by S.D. Shapiro
In the fast paced 21st century we've traded common
sense for the ability to quickly look up information on
the internet. We've forgotten our manners and civility.
How do we get back to our roots? Can we get back?
Food for thought . . .
We have discussed actual food allergies before. Anybody who suffers from a real food allergy has my respect and sympathy. It seems though, in current
times, we have raised a whole demographic of people
who cannot eat normally. They base their choices on
pseudo science and Hollywood trends.
Peanuts are number one on the most wanted chart of
things we cannot eat in modern times. George Washington Carver is likely spinning in his grave as his peanuts
were the solution to everything. Did you know that
carver had over 100 uses for peanuts? From peanut
butter to cosmetics; he used peanuts for everything.
Jimmy Carter was a simple peanut farmer who made it
to the White House. Now we cannot eat peanuts.
Even corn syrup has taken a hit in the arena of
healthy eating. The man made sweetener, high fructose corn syrup, is in a lot of foods; from ketchup to
soda to salad dressing. It is everywhere. High fructose
corn syrup's link to obesity and the fact that, according to scientists, the human body does not process the
sweetener in the same way it processes regular cane
sugar are just a few of the reasons people are looking
to ditch high fructose corn syrup from their diets. In
2008 the corn refiners association started a campaign
touting high fructose corn syrup as “natural.” Meanwhile soda companies are offering sodas made with
sugar as an alternative.
Gluten has become persona non grata in modern
America. Our forefathers would be embarrassed with
a country that cannot eat bread. Our grocery stores
are filled with new packaging happily announcing that
products are “now gluten free.”
I was at a dinner party recently. The host brought
out baskets of dinner rolls and placed them at each
end of the dinner table. One of the guests asked, “Are
these rolls gluten free?” The host chuckled and said,
“No.” The guest, disgusted, pushed the basket to the
other side of the table as if the rolls were poisoned.
Two days later I saw the woman who refused the
non gluten free rolls eating pizza at a local pizza joint.
She didn't want the rolls and played the gluten card.
A friend works as a cook in a diner. He likes to tell a
story about the time one of the waitresses came back
and asked, “Does the pancake batter have eggs in it?”
“Well, yes. It is a cake. It's basically flour, eggs, and
milk,” he said.
The waitress replied, “Oh, this lady is allergic to eggs.”
“Tell her to avoid the Denver omelet.”
A few minutes later the waitress returned, “Do we
have any gluten free bread?”
“No. Pretty much all the bread had gluten.”
Eventually they sent out a glass of ice water for their
picky customer.
When it comes down to eating try to avoid the trends
and remember the egg. The egg went from practically
being labeled as poison to being healthy. And back
and forth a couple times. The trends always flip flop
and are proven wrong. Stop and think, “What would
my mother say?” She would say, “Shut up and eat
what's on your plate.”

Some individuals with
Alzheimer’s disease may
experience sundowning.
Individuals who experience sundowning become
increasingly confused,
agitated, anxious and
disoriented in the evening
and this can continue
throughout the night.
Factors that may bring
about sundowning include:
• Mental and physical fatigue from dealing with
their memory loss and confusion throughout the day.
• The reduction in
lighting may lead the individual to misjudge what
they see and cause increased agitation.
Sundowning is not only
distressing to the individual with Alzheimer’s but
also caregivers. Here are
some tips for managing
sundowning:
• Schedule appointments and activities in
the morning or early afternoon.
• Be mindful of environment factors that may
influence
sundowning
(eg: low lighting, noise
from the TV, increased
household activity).
• Talk to the doctor or
pharmacist about what
time is best for taking
medications.
• Avoid physically restraining the individual
as this will most likely increase agitation.
• Plan the largest meal
of the day for lunch and
provide a simple dinner.

Sheep shearing the old-fashioned way
by Katrina Weaver
It was a windy, warm
day in spring and our
family was deciding what
things we were going to
do that day. “How about
shear our sheep?” suggested someone.
“I guess we should,”
agreed my dad, not very
enthusiastically.
“It
needs to be done pretty
soon, anyway, so we may
as well do it now.”
My younger brother
hurried down to the
basement to get the nonelectric shears, and soon
returned with them. The
year before, we had
sheared our sheep the
“homestead” way, because we like to do
things ourselves. It had
taken over an hour to do
just one sheep!
Now my father, mother
and I headed out to the
pasture to get the unfortunate sheep, who was a
year old and affectionately called, “Lily Lamb.”
She was the pet of the
family, and willingly followed us over to the
shaded part of our lawn.
“Okay, sheep. Time to
flip over on your side.”
instructed my dad cheerfully, grabbing the front
legs, while my brother
and I grabbed the back
ones.
With a bit of struggling, we managed to get
Lily on her side, and
then my brother grabbed
her back legs and held,
and I took her head,
while my mother held on
to her front legs. (As you
can tell, this is more
than a one person job for
inexperienced shearers!)
My dad expertly slid
his shears under a little
bit of wool, and cut just
so near the skin, but not
too close. This is hard to
do because, when the
wool is pulled a little, (so
that cutting goes easier)
the skin pulls up a little
too.
I was sitting at our
sheep’s head, holding it
in
place,
while
it
breathed in my face.
“Halitosis!” I exclaimed
in a gagged tone, clutching my nose and turning
away as best I could
from its offensive breath.
My brother snickered,
and then suddenly his
eyes widened. “Disgusting! She just burped!”
“My, this sheep has
rather bad manners.”
commented my dad,
to clip wool. As I
sheared, I noticed that
my hands seemed to be
getting
greasy.
“My
hands are getting sort of
greasy.” I commented.
“Why is that?”
“It’s lanolin.” replied
my mother. “That is what
keeps the sheep dry
when it rains.”
After awhile, my brother begged for a turn, and
I reluctantly gave him
the shears. Shearing the
sheep
was
fun,
I
thought.
My brother did it for
awhile, and then my dad
finished up the more difficult parts, like on top of
her head, and part way
down her legs. Then he
straightened up and
stretched. “Done, finally!” he said.
“Um, I hate to mention
this, but what about
Daisy, our other sheep?”
someone asked.
“I don’t think I have
the energy to do another
sheep today.” my dad
stated firmly. “Put Lily
back in the pasture, and
let’s go inside to relax
and have a snack.” And
so we did.
The

clipping carefully around
her neck, while my
mother held the braided
rope collar out of the
way.
After a while, my dad
had finished one side,
and with some difficulty,
(including
waving
hooves, and snorting) we
managed to flip the
sheep over onto her other side. “May I shear a
little?” I questioned. “My
legs are falling asleep
from sitting here, holding Lily’s feet.”
My dad stood up and
stretched his back. “I’m
okay with that,” he said.
“Bending over like that
gets tiring after awhile.”
So my dad and I
switched, and I bent over

Lost in translation ~ visiting the homeland
by Joe Parzych
During their childhood
years, I often told my children of my hope of someday visiting the birthplace
of my mother and father.
They were born and
brought up in opposite
ends of Poland. My mother
lived in the Tatra Mountains, the home of fiercely
independent
mountaineers, poets, writers,
musicians, and artists as
well as dissidents, remnants of wandering tribes,
like the Celts, and other
outcasts. My father grew
up near a national forest
in the Russian-occupied
sector, which was once a
shallow sea.
Since Poland was divided into sectors during
their childhood, my parents each spoke a slightly
different
dialect.
My
mother grew up in the
Austro-Hungarian partition. English was a second language for me,
since we were restricted
to speaking Polish at
home. After beginning
grade school, I seldom
spoke Polish, but once I
began hearing Polish spoken in Poland, it all came
back to me. In fact, on a
later visit, I served as a
translator for a tour
group. A teacher of Polish
once commented, “Your
Polish is very good, but it
is very archaic.
My first born daughter,
Deborah, grew up to become a consulting civil
engineer and decided to
take me to Poland to visit
my parents’ birthplaces.
We flew into Warsaw airport with her husband,
Mike, rented a car, and
toured the city.
After touring Warsaw, we
set out for the Tatra Mountains, my mother’s birth
place, where the soil is
poor, the growing season is
short, and the winters long
and cold. Since I’d continued my parents’ custom of
sending “care” packages to
relatives, we received a
heartfelt welcome.
We moved on to the
plains of Northern Poland
in search of my father’s
birthplace of Zaleshie,
which means “By the
Woods”. Towns of that
name showing no shortage, none of which being
my father’s birthplace,
though we happened
upon a Parzych family at
a cemetery as they prepared for a funeral of a
young girl. There did not
seem to be any family
connection.
Strangely
enough,
while it had snowed in
the mountains of the
South, in the North by
the Russian border, it
was warm enough for us
to go for a swim, though
it was definitely not a
tourist mecca. Some
Russian soldiers at a
checkpoint were downright hostile, and we did
not tarry. We drove on in
our rental car to a good
sized town with an upscale restaurant.
A waitress, dressed in a
fancy uniform with a little
white apron sporting ruffled trim, seated us at a
table and left. Debbie and
her husband Mike had
studied Polish at a college
in Seattle. They could
read and write Polish and
even speak it, though
their accent made it
sound as if they were
speaking Swahili.
When the very professional waitress came to
take our order, Debbie,
proudly speaking her
Swahili accented Polish
pointed to the word “befsztyk” and attempted to
determine what kind of
beef steak was offered.
The sophisticated waitress stuck her pen in her
beautifully coiffured hair
with a sweep of her hand,
and put the order pad in
the pocket of her ruffled
apron. With great dignity,
our waitress leaned forward, holding clenched
hands to her temples
with forefingers pointed
straight
ahead.
She
leaned forward until her
body was parallel to the
floor, then cried out, “Moo-o!, swung her hips to
one side and slapped herself on the rump. After
our mime left with our
rump steak order, we exploded in laughter.
After lunch we continued our quest for Zalesie.
As night fell, we arrived at
a medium size town. We
circled the town looking
for a Polish Hotel. Unlike
the Hilton hotels in
Poland, or even the Polish
Tourist hotels, the ordinary Polish hotels have a
very modest sign about a
foot high and a foot and a
half long, on the side of
the building. They are
usually unlighted and
hard to spot, especially
since the street lights
were off as we searched.
We circled the dark deserted streets in vain. In
Poland, all honest people
are home by nine o’clock
in small towns. Many
towns shut off their street
lights at 10 p.m. This was
one of them.
We started another tour
of the town when a police
car pulled up, lights flashing, blocking our way.
Two policemen got out —
two very unfriendly policemen. Pointing to the number plate, one of them demanded to know what we
were doing so far from
Warsaw — and at such an
ungodly hour. It was now
about 10:30 p.m.
“Hotel. We look for hotel,” Mike said in his
Swahili Polish.
“Ha! A likely story. No
hotels in this town. Papiery!” the policeman de-
manded of Mike, who’s
scared to death of policemen. His hands shook as
he handed the policeman
the rental papers.
“Dad! For heaven’s sake,
talk to them. Talk to them!”
Debbie said in a panic.
As soon as the hostile
cops heard me say
“Amerykanski”
their
whole demeanor changed.
“There’s no hotel in this
town, but we take to one.
Follow us!” and off they
sped. Mike followed. We
drove 30 miles, or more, to
a brightly lit Polish Government tourist hotel.
Brightly lit, and expensive.
Not as expensive as a
Hilton, but nowhere near
as reasonable as an ordinary Polish hotel. We bid
the cops a cheery farewell
and went to the hotel door.
It was locked. A doorman
dozed in a chair. I rattled
the door. He got up and
unlocked the door. I
thanked him and began a
conversation with him in
Polish. I told him how the
police had mistaken us for
robbers when we were only

looking for a reasonably
priced Polish hotel. The
doorman jumped up.
“Why, there’s a Polish hotel
right across the road, just
a short distance away.”
The doorman marched
up to the desk and began
to berate the clerk.
“What’s the matter with
you, taking these good
countrymen’s money? A
month’s pay you’ll be
charging. Robbery, I say.”
The desk clerk hung
her head.
“What’s going on?”
Debbie asked me, bewildered by the shouting
doorman who was flailing
his arms for emphasis.
“We’re going across the
road to a Polish hotel.”
Sure enough; there was
a Polish hotel just over
the hill just far enough
away to be out of sight.
This door was also
locked. I rattled the door
to wake the doorman. He
let us in and woke the
desk clerk. I asked for
two rooms. The girl
charged us $10. She took
us to a suite of two bedrooms and a living room
with a balcony. When we
asked if they had a soda
machine, the girl said
she’d make tea. Soon she
was back with a tray of
tea, cream and sugar.
She didn’t want to take
any money, but Debbie
insisted. She then asked
the room clerk if she
would wake us at 7 a.m.
The girl said their clock
was broken and she had
no watch. Debbie said,
“Take mine.”
Next morning at 7, the
clerk knocked on the door.
She began to take off the
watch, but Debbie put her
hand on the girl’s wrist.
The girl looked puzzled.
Debbie said “Prezent.” The
girl was overwhelmed and
began to cry. “Thank you,
thank you; I never had a
watch before,” she said,
hugging Debbie, and smiling through her tears.

Can’t-miss grad gifts
Graduation season is a
time for celebration as students prepare to face the
next phase of their lives.
Graduation parties will
soon be in full swing, and
people may find themselves
attending one or more of
these festive occasions.
Party guests and graduation well-wishers may
want to bring gifts for the
guests of honor, and the
following are a few ideas
that newly minted grads
may appreciate now or in
the near future.
Travel
Graduates enter a time
of transition between
graduation and their pursuits of a career or additional schooling. The
summer that follows
graduation is filled with
free time for many recent
grads, making it a prime
time to explore the world.
If you know a new grad
who harbors a sense of
wanderlust, put together
a travel-themed present
complete with airline
tickets, guide books, carry-on luggage, and some
converted currency to use
as spending money. You
even can work with a
travel agent to customize
a trip you know your new
grad will love.
Charitable giving
Philanthropic students
may have spent their
time as students helping
others and supporting
certain charities. If you
are aware of a cause your
graduate supports, think
about making a donation
to that organization. Couple that gift with an offering to volunteer. It’s a
great way to spend time
with the graduate before
he or she moves on to the
next phase of life.
Professional wardrobe
Recent graduates may
have interviews lined up
or even a job awaiting
them upon graduation,
and such grads may need
attire that is more befitting the business world.
Suits, ties, collared shirts,
briefcases, and the like
will make thoughtful gifts
for the budding professional. If you are unsure
of sizes or style preferences, a gift card to a wellknown retailer or specialty
shop is a safe idea.
Automotive accessories
Many recent grads use
the months immediately
following graduation to
take a road trip, making
automotive accessories
great gifts. Increase the
enjoyment factor of a
post-graduation road trip
by treating the grad to a
subscription to a streaming satellite music service. This way grads can
enjoy their favorite tunes
no matter where their
roads lead them.
Relaxation
School is not easy, so a
gift to a spa for a massage
or facial session can be a
way to help your favorite
graduate unwind once final exam and term paper
season has officially ended. Exercise is another
way to unwind from the
rigors of a school year, so
consider a health club
membership for new grads
whose campus gym access
is no longer available.
Financial favors
Cash is a graduation
gift that will never go out
of style. It may not be
fancy, but cash certainly
comes in handy for graduates facing repayment of
student loans or the costs
of secondary schooling. If
giving cash at a party,
write a check payable to
the graduate rather than
giving loose cash that can
be easily lost. Some grads
even may have a Go Fund
Me or Paypal account to
help offset schooling
costs, and gift givers can
deposit money directly
into such accounts if they
so desire.
The roots of education
are bit er,
but the fruit is sweet.

This week’s Whatchamacallit was
sent in by Bradley Shane (Gloversville,
NY) and at first, I was stumped. To
me, it looks like an electrified sword or
dagger of some kind. The thin metal,
presumably aluminum, heats up when
plugged in. After much online research,
this week’s item has been identified.
Whatchamacallits
If you were born in the early half of
the 20th century, you might remember
one of these from your father’s closet.
It’s an electric necktie iron and by the
look of the style of electrical plug, it
dates back to the late 20s or early 30s.
The modern era of necktie began around 1924, when New York
City tailor Jesse Langsdorf decided
to trim his necktie fabric a different
way. This new way of designing the
tie moved the fashion accessory from
the more formally worn ascot and
cravat to an everyday, working man’s
accessory. With more and more people moving from rural settings to find

work in the factories, the popularity
of wearing a tie slowly diminished.
This simple device was plugged
in, just like an electric iron. After it
heated up, the operator would run it
along the tie fabric, both inside and
out. This would remove the wrinkles
and freshen up the tie for wearing.
