We are pleased to say our term has been filled with exciting new experiences which have grown our confidence and wisdom as leaders, and made us more valuable to our regular jobs. The year has been truly amazing, filled with both hard work and good times. Every person involved with the Chamber has been wonderful to work with, the staff, the board and the membership. We feel privileged to be part of this organization, and looking back, are humbled by the unique opportunity the co-chair position has provided us. It was truly a once in a lifetime treat to be involved firsthand with the blossoming of this new Chamber into the first class organization it has become today. DON MONTGOMERY Co-Chairman, Lewis Clark Valley Chamber Waddell & Reed Now it is time for the Chamber to turn a page and begin an equally exciting new chapter. The next chapter includes new leaders with fresh new perspectives. We are thrilled to introduce to you our new leadership for 2012: Sherri Skalicky from Sattler Insurance will be the chairperson. Todd Blamires from Art Beat will be 1st Vice Chair and Greg Craber from Northwest Media Productions will be the 2nd Vice Chair. Please join us in welcoming our new Chamber leadership! Going into 2012, we can no longer say the Chamber is “newly formed” or just started. On the contrary, we can now say with confidence that the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce is firmly established. Last week this was confirmed at our board retreat by the facilitator, LeRoy Tipton, who is the President and CEO of the Greater Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce. He was very impressed with how far established our Chamber has become in such a short time period. He specifically pointed out our value statements, which he says most Chambers never get done. He was also impressed with the large number of activities and events we hold given our small staff and budget. DAVE PANKEY Co-Chairman, Lewis Clark Valley Chamber Regence BlueShield of Idaho As past co-chairmen, we will continue our journey with the Chamber throughout 2012 as part of the executive committee and specifically to support Sherri on her new adventure. We are both really looking forward to this new position. To us, it’s always a pleasure serving on a board whose vision is “creating a united community, vibrant business environment, and quality way of life in the Lewis Clark Valley”. Thank you, Don & Dave ambassadorsinaction THANK YOU! PARAMOUNT PEST CONTROL For your continued investment and belief in the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce! Last month, the Ambassador Committee recognized the crew at Paramount Pest Control in Lewiston for their continued investment in the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber. The “Chamber Coffee Break” is a program developed by the members of the Ambassadors Committee. A lucky chamber member is randomly selected and delivered fresh coffee and donuts by the Ambassadors on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Special thanks to Daily’s Bakery for donating their fantastic coffee and Albertsons for donating the donuts! Bursting bubbles, and heart pounding success, yes, we have felt it all this year. As we wrap up our first year as the newly formed Lewis Clark Valley Chamber I know one thing for sure… starting next month I can’t call us the “newly formed” anymore, we are simply The Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce and very proud of it. Dave Pankey and Don Montgomery, you two are super stars. I am thankful to have had the two of you to lean on during the tough times and appreciate your support every step of the way. When asked in the beginning of the year, “Why two chairmen?” you demonstrated the value and quality leadership that this Chamber needed to be successful in our first year. True Huckleberries. KRISTIN KEMAK President/CEO, Lewis Clark Valley Chamber Sherri Skalicky, ready, set, jump! You have been thrown into the fire a year sooner than you expected, we will be a spicy combination and I look forward to the energy you and I will bring to the board meetings. Lee Ann Hancock is our new Marketing and Events Manager, in her first week she had to handle the chamber’s biggest, toughest event – the Kendall Subaru Clearwater Snake Steelhead Derby – I am happy to say, she didn’t run away screaming! Thanks Lee Ann, I know that is a big pill to swallow and you did wonderfully. Well, two events left in 2011. This weekend we have the 25th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade sponsored by Avista. It is always a wonderful family event and we look forward to either seeing the fabulous floats you have created or enjoying the evening with you as a spectator. Join us and all of the chamber staff, board and sponsors after the parade at the Clarkston Event Center for a fun wrap up to the evening. And then, what better way to ring in the New Year than joining in the festivities at the Lewis Clark Plaza for the Sesquicentennial New Year’s Eve Gala sponsored by St. Joseph Regional Medical Center? Live music, dancing, cash prizes and much more! Finally, thank you to our membership for sticking with us during this time of transition, we appreciate your support in 2011 and wish you a successful and prosperous 2012. what’shappening 25th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade You're Invited to celebrate Christmas with the Chamber! The meeting featured a presentation by Joanna Holder, Chair of the Lewis-Clark Chapter of Women in Timber, and State President of Idaho Women in Timber. The presentation detailed the many activities of the local chapter, including grant support of $300 towards Environmental Awareness Days - Nez Perce Soil and Water Conservation May 17 - 18 in Lewiston, Idaho. It is a traditional natural resource field day for local sixth grade youth. This year students from Lewiston, Clarkston, Culdesac, and Lapwai got hands-on learning as they participated in a wide variety of activities at Hells Gate State Park. They were able to simulate living through the life cycle of a salmon, discovering fossils down by the beach, touching real pelts and skulls of area wildlife, handling live insects from around the world. EDUCATION Earth Day Celebration Co-hosted a community event with Lewis-Clark Recyclers. The group made paper at this event and handed out seedlings, balloons as well as brochures and gave out prizes. Great organizers and fabulous volunteers made presenting to the approximately 300 students a positive experience for everyone, and spent thirty minutes with each group, receiving great feedback from the teachers as well as students. Sustainable Forestry Tour The 2011 Sustainable Forestry Tour for educators was held June 21-24 in north Idaho, marking the 11th year for this highly successful tour educating our educators, successful in helping to promote the message of truth in the forest products industry as well as increase awareness of the role Women in Timber plays. The chapter sponsored three teacher Scholarships for a total of $900 this year. LEGISLATIVE D.C. Trip Two chapter members represented our chapter on the Washington D.C. trip in May. This was a new experience with the trial collaboration of American Agri-women group joining us in their fly-in agenda efforts. The feedback was very favorable. Carole Asbury Secretary, L-C Valley Chamber NRC This will be the last Natural Resource Committee meeting for 2011. Arbor Day Presentation W.I.T gave an Arbor Day Tree presentation to the 6th Grade students of Webster Elementary’s field trip to the woods and gathered to camp at the remote site of Camp Whitman. We made paper and explained the products that come from our renewable resource. These students learned a lot as well as having a great bunch of questions. committeenews Ugly Sweaters and Eggnog Despite the falling snow, several members of the LCYP met in November at Rooster’s Waterfront Restaurant to share information about upcoming events, to include a benefit run for a local doctor’s granddaughter, volunteer opportunities at the lighted Christmas parade and a summer wedding for two of our members! Keep your eyes out for details about an LCYP Christmas party, we typically have an ugly Christmas sweater contest! Cheers! Eric The group is open to anyone ages 21 – 40. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamin's on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition. DECEMBER 2011 LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION WWW.LCVALLEYCHAMBER.ORG 17 ourvalley Think Carefully Before Hiring Family Members Some family members have the skill and can-do attitude to propel a firm toward greater success; others have the power to drag it toward bankruptcy. Before hiring a son-in-law who’s clamoring for an executive position or a sister who recently graduated from college, beware of the following pitfalls. HIRING RELATIVES WHO AREN’T QUALIFIED. You wouldn’t hire an engineer who struggles with simple algebra or a sales representative who lacks people skills, would you? Likewise, you shouldn’t hire family members who lack basic qualifications for the jobs you’re filling. Many families require sons and daughters who are recent graduates to work a few years for another company before taking a position in the family business. They reason that working for someone else often provides a healthy dose of reality. The family name carries no weight at another firm, so the graduate learns how to survive on his or her own merits. Such a practice also introduces the graduate to another way of doing business and a different company culture, both of which may benefit the family firm in the long run. PAYING TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE TO FAMILY MEMBERS. Some business owners see family members as cheap labor; others compensate relatives well beyond industry standards. Both practices foster resentment. If your son is required to work long hours without adequate compensation, he may decide to quit or feel trapped. The daughter who is too highly paid for her skills and experience will often misunderstand the value of her contribution, while other employees resent the boss’s favoritism. To ensure equal treatment, some firms establish a trainee program in which newly hired employees must complete a probationary period during which they’re paid a lower wage. The goal should be to treat all employees fairly and in accordance with written personnel policies, whether or not they’re family members. FAILING TO HOLD RELATIVES ACCOUNTABLE. If your uncle isn’t meeting the requirements of the job, his supervisor should provide appropriate direction. After that, if his performance doesn’t improve, your uncle’s employment with your firm may need to be terminated. In other words, your relative should be treated like any other employee. That’s another reason to proceed with caution. As much as possible, you want to ensure that the folks you hire are qualified and a good fit for your business – regardless of their relationship to you. His feast day, St. Nicholas Day, is December 6, which falls early in the Advent season. Some places he arrives in the middle of November and moves about the countryside, visiting schools and homes to find out if children have been good. Other places he comes in the night and finds carrots and hay for his horse or donkey along with children's wish lists. Small treats are left in shoes or stockings so the children will know he has come. Where St. Nicholas is prominent, his day, not Christmas, is the primary gift giving day. Parties may be held on the eve, December 5th, and shoes or stockings left for St. Nicholas to fill during the night. Children will find treats of small gifts, fruit or nuts, and special Nicholas candies and cookies. St. Nicholas gifts are meant to be shared, not hoarded for oneself.
