Mission
MOTHER MCAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOLisaCatholic
educationalcommunitycommittedtoprovidingaqualitysecondaryeducationfor
youngwomen.InthetraditionoftheSistersofMercyandtheirfoundress,Catherine
McAuley,wepreparestudentstoliveinacomplex,dynamicsocietybyteachingthem
tothinkcritically,communicateeffectively,respondcompassionatelytotheneedsof
theircommunityandassumerolesofChristianleadership.Inpartnershipwithparents,
weempoweryoungwomentoacknowledgetheirgiftednessandtomakedecisions
withawell-developedmoralconscience.Wefosteranappreciationofthediversityof
theglobalcommunityandaquestforknowledgeandexcellenceaslife-longgoals.
HISTORY
AsmallgroupofMercySistersarrivedinChicagoin1846,ledbyFrancesWarde,
CatherineMcAuley'sclosestfriend.Withinweekstheyopeneda"selectschool"that
becameSt.FrancisXavierAcademyforFemales,thefirstschoolcharteredinthecity
ofChicago.Thecourseofstudycoveredprimary,secondaryandcollegiatelevels.The
firstbuildingwaslocatedonWabashAvenuebetweenMadisonandMonroeStreets.
WhentheChicagoFirein1871destroyedtheoriginalbuilding,St.FrancisAcademy
relocatedto29thandWabashforashorttime,thentoalargersiteat49thandCottage
Grovein1900.Inthe1950's,thesouthwestsideofChicagoneededaCatholicgirls'
schooltoserveafast-growingpopulation.In1956"theAcademy"relocatedonce
again.MotherMcAuleyLiberalArtsHighSchoolandSt.XavierCollege(whichis
nowauniversity)openedinthefallof1956toservesecondaryandpostsecondary
womenstudentsrespectively.McAuleyopenedwith523students,300ofwhichwere
firstyearstudents.Todaytheenrollmentisapproximately1300youngwomen.These
youngwomenandthe150facultyandstaffmembersformthepresentdayMcAuley
community.
DEAR FRIENDS,
Asyoureadthisletter,anewerahasbegunatMotherMcAuleyLiberalArtsHighSchool.Irecentlycompleted
mytermasChairoftheBoardofTrusteesandIamdelightedtoturnthereinsover
toMrs.AnneEdwards-Cotter’73–anexceptionalbusinessandcommunityleader
whowillserveMotherMcAuleywellintheexcitingyearstocome.Wehavealso
transitionedtoanewadministrationmodeltofurtherenhancetheschool’sincredible
potential.Dr.ChristineMelonewillcontinueinherroleasPresidentandMrs.
ClaudiaWoodruffwillnowserveasPrincipal.Thismodelprovidesfortheschool’s
continuedgrowthandoutreachbyallowingthePresidenttofocusprimarilyon
strategicplanning,institutionaladvancement(includingrecruitment,marketingand
development),alumnaerelationsandfinancialstewardship.Atthesametime,it
allowsthePrincipaltofocusdirectlyonacademicaffairs,studentlife,faculty/staff,
parentsandtheday-to-dayadministrationoftheschool.
Inour165thyear,wearetrulyprivilegedtocontinueCatherineMcAuley’sfaithfilledmissiontoeducateyoungwomenandaregratefulforthesponsorshipbytheSistersofMercy.The
schoolremainscommittedtoitsrichtraditionofprovidingarigorousliberalartscurriculumthatisrelevant
tothe needsoftoday’sstudentsandpreparesthemtobeconfidentleadersofthefuture.Tothisend,the
schoolproudlypartnerswithnearly200gradeschoolswhosegraduatescomenotonlyforexceptionalcollege
preparation,butalsotoexperiencetheMcAuley“lifetimeadvantage”ofendlessopportunities.
Iamextremelyproudofouraccomplishmentsthispastyear,mostespeciallythoseofourstudents.Onceagain,
IampleasedtoreportthattheClassof2011graduated369students,100%ofwhichwereacceptedtocollege!
(Thisisthe secondconsecutiveyearthatwe’vehad100%collegeacceptanceforourgraduatingclass.)Even
moreimpressiveisthefactthattheyreceivedover$23milliondollarsinscholarships!
Anothersignificantachievementisthatwetookontheveryambitiousprojectofreplacingtheschool’swest
parkinglotwithintwoshortmonthsduringthesummerbreak.Thelotwascompletelyrebuiltwith100
additional parkingspaces,enhancedlighting,anewstormwaterretentionsystem,wrought-ironfencing,and
beautifulnewlandscapingtocapoffatremendousimprovementtoourcampus.
WehopeyouenjoythisAnnualReport.Wewillshareoursuccesses,acknowledgeourbenefactorsandprofile
two ofourdistinguished alumnae.YouwillseethatweproudlyhonoredtheBiganeFamilyandMs.Marion
McFarland’55atCelebration2011-awonderfuleventthatraisednearly$54,000forMotherMcAuley’s
ScholarshipFundwhichprovidesmuch-neededfinancialassistancetoourverydeservingstudents.
MotherMcAuleyisabletoboastofsomanyachievementsprimarilybecauseofyou-ourdedicatedsupporters.
Wesimplycouldnotcontinuetoprovidetheverybesteducationalexperiencetoourstudentswithoutyour
generousfinancialsupport.Weareeternallygratefulforyouandallyoudoforourschoolandourstudents.

Oftentimes,popcultureiconsorsportsstarsareasked
byjournaliststoreflectonthepeopleorthingsthat
inspiredthem.Theanswersarefairlypredictable–a
devotedteacher,alovingparent,ademandingcoach.
Infact,allofuscanthinkofsomeoneorsomething
thatmadearealdifferenceinourlives.Fouryears
atMotherMcAuleycertainlyshapedmylifeand
businesscareerbygivingmearocksolidfoundation
inliterature,scienceandthearts.Butwhattookme
30-plusyearstomakeasignificantdonationtomy
almamatersothatothergirlscanexperiencethe
advantageofanall-girls’Christianeducation?Ihave
tocredittheteachingsofChristandhisapostleswhose
wordsanddeedsshapeeveryoneofmyactions.
Thesetwopassageshaveservedas“gamechangers”
inmylifeandIpraytheymotivatemorealumnaeto

VirginiaMurphyScholarshipisjustonesmallstep

HighSchooltoshapeyoungwomentowardslivesof
leadershipandcompassion.

VirginiaMurphyEndowedScholarshipthrougha
charitablegiftof$10,000.Thescholarshipisawarded
toaseniorstudentwhohasdemonstratedaserious
commitmenttoeducationandwhohastheacademic
standingofan“A”average.Franciewantstoassist
aseniorstudentwhosefamilyisstrugglingtomeet

THE ST. THERESE, THE LITTLE FLOWER, SCHOLARSHIP
TheSt.Therese,theLittleFlowerScholarshipisa$2500tuitionscholarshipavailableto
currentMcAuleystudentsofalllevels.Fourscholarshipswillbeawarded.Thescholarship
wasestablishedbythefamilyofMcAuleyalumnaeinordertosupportcurrentstudentsintheir
pursuitofaMotherMcAuleyHighSchooleducation.ThefamilybelievesstronglyinMcAuley
andwishestoremainanonymous.Theyareverypleasedtobeabletohelpstudentswho
areinneedoffinancialassistance,whohavesolidacademicandbehavioralrecords,and,most
importantly,whohavedemonstratedastrongwillingnessandcommitmenttoservice.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES ESTABLISHES THE LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP
Eachyear,MotherMcAuleyboastsmorethan300legacystudents.Liketheirmothers,aunts,grandmothers,
andthousandsofotherwomenbeforethem,theseyoungwomensharetheeducationaljourneybegunby
CatherineMcAuley.Beginningwiththeclassof2015,alldaughtersofMotherMcAuleyHighSchoolAlumnae
willautomatically receivea$500non-renewabletuitionscholarship.Thisscholarshipwascreatedtoassist
incomingfreshmenandwasestablishedbytheBoardofTrustees.

specialtystores,andmorethan100wonderfulgiftbasketsandraffleprizes.Fashionsaremodeledbymembers
oftheMcAuleycommunity.

ThemothersofMcAuleygraduateshavecreatedachapteroftheMothersClubforthosewhochooseto
continuetheirassociationwithMcAuleyaftertheirdaughtershavemovedontocollege.Theirmissionis
raisingfundsforstudentfinancialaid.TheirmainfundraisingmethodisthroughtheMACSLtd.,astorerunby
volunteersandleadingtheeffortisMrs.JoanClaussen.

TheMotherMcAuleyFathersClubisdedicatedtofosteringgoodrelationsbetweendadsanddaughtersthrough
activitiesofasocialandspiritualnature.FathersClubsponsoredeventsinclude:FatherandDaughterGolf
Outinginthefall,FatherandDaughterMassandReception,AnnualSpaghettiDinnerinconjunctionwiththe
school’sfallmusical,FatherandDaughterBowling,theAnnualSportsNight,theChicagoWhiteSoxOuting

REUNION
MercyDaymarkedawonderfuleventatMotherMcAuley,membersoftheClassof1960,thefirstclasstospendallfour
yearsatthenewcampus,returnedtocelebratethe50thAnniversaryoftheirgraduation.MotherMcAuleycelebrates
MercyDayonthelastFridayofSeptembereachyearby“TellingtheStoryofCatherineMcAuley.”Itisadayofjoy,
celebrationandfestivitieshighlightinghistoricalrecordsoftheSistersofMercy.TheClassof1960attendedthestudent
MercyDayassembly,followedbyaluncheonandtourofthebuildingwheretheysaw“new”improvementssuchas
theauditoriumandthemaingym—spacesthatdidnotexistwhentheywereMcAuleystudents.Theafternoonended
inMercyChapelassongsof
McAuleyHighfilledtheroom.As
mentionedabove,thesewomen
wereMotherMcAuley’sfirst
graduatingclasstocompleteall
fouryearsinthecurrentbuilding.

Mrs.BiganebecameinvolvedwiththeschoolwhenAnnewasafreshmanin1972.Whileeachof
thegirlswasatMcAuley,Mrs.BiganewasanactivememberoftheMothersClubandservedaterm
asPresident.SheloyallyrantheBenefitDriveyearafteryearandcontinuedherinvolvementafter

SheisagraduateofSt.BrideElementarySchoolandSaintXavierAcademy,
classof1955.AftergraduatingfromtheAcademy,MarionjoinedtheSisters
ofMercy,attainedherBachelorofArtsdegreefromSaintXavierCollegeand
taughtsevenyearsinCatholicschools.In1967,Marionbecameafirstgrade
teacherandlearningdisabilitiesteacheratPhilSheridanSchool.Sheremained
ateacherfornearlythreedecades,duringthoseyearssheearnedaMasterof
ArtsdegreefromSaintXavierUniversity,andretiredfromteachingin1998.

McAuley,formerlyCatherineElizabethMcAuley,wasborn
inIrelandinthelate18thcentury.CatherineMcAuleylived
withawealthycouplefollowingthedeathofherparents.
Uponthedeathofthiscouple,sheinheritedtheirlarge
estate.RecognizingtheneedsofthesickandpoorinIreland,
Catherinechosetousethisinheritancetohelpothers.She
openedtheHouseofMercyinDublin,Irelandtohelphouse
andeducatepooryoungwomen.CatherinefoundedtheSisters
ofMercybecauseshewishedtoseethisworkcontinue.Other
youngwomenjoinedhernewcommunitysothattogetherthey
couldservethepoor,thesickandthoseinneedofeducation.
Today,allovertheworld,theSistersofMercyalongwith
committedlaywomenandmen,followinCatherine’s
footstepsbyofferingmercy-filledservicetoothersinneed.

LovingGod,youchoseCatherineMcAuleyfortheserviceofyourpeoplewhoarepoor,sickanduneducated.
YouinspiredhertofoundtheInstituteofMercysothatthesegoodworksmightendure.Givetoeachofus,her
daughtersandfriends,aportionofhercompassionatespiritandanardentdesiretoserveyoursufferingpeople.
Blessallourundertakingsandgrantthatunionandcharitymayalwaysthriveamongus.Graciouslyhear
ourprayerforCatherine,andbygrantingthefavorsweaskthroughherintercession,hastenthedaywhenher
