95 days and counting...
We are counting the days until camp, but let’s not forget that
we have a chance to hang out with you all at the Appel Farm
Spring Reunion at the Funplex on March 29th! Come! Everyone
is invited, campers, alumni, families and friends!
Until then, please enjoy meeting camp alumnae, Aleksandr
Akulov, and learn what Sarv thinks about the Light from the
Stars. Check out our talented campers’ poetry and artwork,
see who had ice cream with us, and read all about Saucy Sam’s
adventures! See who’s already signed up, and continue your
countdown to Camp 2014!
So many veteran campers are registered, and new campers
are pouring in, too! Sessions are starting to fill up, and we
are starting waiting lists in some age groups! Also, if you are
applying for a scholarship or tuition assistance, it’s time to get
your application in. The deadline for scholarship application is
March 31, 2014.
Let’s keep in touch! Like us on Facebook, and introduce yourself
to the whole community on our Welcome Wednesday Blog.
See you at the Funplex on March 29th!
Until Camp...

FEATURED ALUM
Aleksandr Akulov
1.When were you at camp?
I went to Appel Farm for
the summers of 2002,
2003, and 2004.
2.What was your major and
what were some of your
minors?
My major was piano. My
minors were sculpture and
glass blowing, musical
theater, photography, yoga,
tennis, and group games.
3.What was camp like when
you were a camper and
what are some of your
favorite memories?
Camp was like tempura
ice cream. It was exciting,
delicious, fun, fulfilling, and
ephemeral. I always wanted
more. Camp was awesome.
The incredibly talented
and passionate campers,
counselors, and staff at
the camp were the extra
whipped cream on top of
that delicious dessert!
My most vivid memories
come from camp.
I remember I played in a
band called Alex’s Eight
Balls. We played The
Watermelon Man, a jazz
composition, in the style
of rock, on four different
instruments. We also had
two phenomenal soprano
vocalists.
I remember I challenged
Rainah, one of the founders
of GOTO, to a push-up
contest and won!
[Read all about GOTO,
below!]
Finally, the most
controversial sculpture of
our generation probably
exists at the entrance of
Appel Farm: Beauty and
the Beast.
4.Where are you living now,
and what are you doing for
work and fun?
I live in Manhattan, right
in the center of Lincoln
Center: the heart for the
Performing Arts. I work at
Bloomberg LP. For fun I try
my skills at karaoke and eat
exotic foods.
5.How do you think you were
influenced by your Appel
Farm experience?
I learned that creativity and
expression are important in
all capacities.
6.What advice or
suggestions do you have
for present day Appel Farm
campers?
Volunteer with friends to
set the tables up so that
you can get dinner first!
[The Camp Directors don’t
remember this being a
thing in 2002-04, and it’s
not a thing now, but feel
free to help your friends
anyway!]
Most importantly, be free.
At the end of the day, do
what you think is right and
if camp seems super fun,
then you know you’re doing
things right.
Giving Opportunities To Others
In 2001, a 23-year old recent college grad moved to New York and saw two problems. The first: Despite living in one of the nation’s
cultural centers, inner city kids were losing access to the arts. The second: he and his fellow young professionals had few ways to
truly give back to their community. Cameron Snaith’s solution was Giving Opportunities to Others (GOTO).
Over the past thirteen years, GOTO has sent 129 campers, including Aleksandr Akulov, to Appel Farm. GOTO scholars attend camp
for up to three summers on full scholarships, and then enter a formal mentoring
program that provides camp alumni with positive role models as they progress
to high school and beyond.
GOTO has raised over 1.2 million dollars and provided more
than 250 summer camp scholarships for those 129
underprivleged middle school students from New York City.
The volunteer led non-profit also works to encourage
philanthropic awareness and leadership among young professionals.
We are so thankful for GOTO, and each of our GOTO scholars!
Horseback Riding at Appel Farm
Appel Farm is partnering with Windfall Farm to offer horseback
riding lessons to campers again this summer! Windfall Farm
Dressage, a prestigious farm located just 10 minutes from Appel
Farm, has created a specialized program for Appel Farm campers
to combine horseback riding with the arts. For an additional cost,
campers can choose to enroll in the program as both of their
minors and will spend every afternoon learning about horse care,
dressage style riding, and even jumping, and will work towards
a choreographed performance on horseback.
;; Spaces will fill up! Sign up for the Horseback Riding
Program before June 1st!

Light from the Stars
It’s late afternoon. It’s so
quiet that I can almost hear
the long shadows that fall
on the wood floor near my
feet. The long cold winter
is already running out. It’s a
promise of Spring.
As I write this, snow still
covers the fields and woods
on my mountain. When you
read this, Spring will be in
bloom. The earth will be
reborn. So, in reading this,
you are reading the past.
We do that all the time.
Look at the stars. We
are seeing the past. The
light of many stars take a
thousand years to reach us.
One star, Riso Cassiopiae,
has travelled ten thousand
years to get here. We are
seeing ten thousand years
into the past.
If we can see the past, can
we see the future? Look
around. In the deepest
freeze of winter, there are
signs of Spring. Across the
frozen fields, small buds
wait on plants ready to
swell with the longer light
and warmer rays of the
sun. Even as the air holds
its frozen breath streams
still flow under the sheets
of ice. We can see Spring in
the midst of winter.
And summer? Summer
is rolling in. The days get
longer. And longer. We
become restless to go
outdoors.
More and more are their
hints of summer’s warmth.
The blooms of early Spring
bust into the full blossom of
summer.
It is in the bloom of
summer that we migrate
from all parts of the world
to Elmer, New Jersey and
Appel Farm Arts camp.
There we become seasonal
residents of a unique
community of caring and
creative people.
Each year, for the past
twenty-seven years, I
have made my summer
migration to Appel Farm.
Can’t imagine not making
that trip. Yet, unlike the
stars or seasons, the place
is constantly new. It is
its heart that remains as
fixed as the stars. It is the
warmth and light of its
caring that returns each
summer. That we can
foresee and that is much
closer than the light of the
stars.
Sarvananda Bluestone has been a
college professor, published author
and professional psychic. In addition
he has been the Head Counselor and
a Theater Director at Appel Farm for
26 summers. He originally came so
that his daughter, Hira, could come
as a camper. Now, her daughter, his
grand daughter, Lucy, will return for
her second Appel Farm summer.
Shadows
Visual Arts
by Lily Forbes
I see Shadows under your eyes.
I know so many Shadows.
They’ll put you down
and shatter your smile,
crack the earth that you stand on.
Two-faced shadows.
Shadows that wipe all happy emotions from your
body.
There are so, so many Shadows in this world.
Too many.
Ayesha Abdul-Fattaah
They’ll lie and
it’s meaningless to them, merely a laugh. Even if it
hurts you.
They’ll act ‘oh-so-innocent’ and then
smother you,
throw you in horrible, sorrow-filled black.
They’ll turn you into one. A Shadow.
You’re nearly covered
in a layer of darkness.
Just try to keep yourself alive
Or else the Shadows
they’ll get you.
You’re almost smothered, nearly destroyed.
But you can’t let them make you one.
A Shadow.
So you need to gather up that tiny pinpoint of light
inside of you,
just burning to get out.
Set it free.
Everyone has a light. Even the Shadows.
Or they used to.
But they didn’t have the power to use it.
But maybe, just maybe, you’re different.
So shine your light into the world
Nearly covered in Shadow
And
Tammy Stahl
Isabelle Losapio-Przystup
Hazel Henderson
Kara Meacham
Maybe you’ll fail,
be smothered,
put out,
destroyed, like all the other Shadows.
But maybe not.
This doesn’t depend on only you.
Anyone can. Anyone in this Shadow-filled place can
cover this world in light.
These might be just the scrawls of a small girl. But in
the end, there’s a reason for everything.

Saucy Sam
Saucy Sam
lived in the
apple tree
outside North
this summer,
and loved
listening
to all of you
campers laughing
and having fun!
She felt lonely
and campsick
this fall, so she
went on an adventure to
see your faces again! So
far Saucy Sam has visited
Rachel Chadwin, Emma and
Dylan Kelly, Clarissa and
Sophia Rubin,
Kate CiolkowskiWinters, and
Nomi Kligler!
If she arrives
at your
house, you
can help turn
her campsickness
into happiness!
Snap a photo of
you and Saucy
Sam in a fun place,
at a cool event, or with your
favorite people. Send us
