This is a great time to get the kids out one last time before they head back to school for the year. The bass are often active early and late in the day so you can take them out for a short trip on the water and still have lots of fish catching action! Last month was one of the most inconsistent weather months that I have ever seen in the Texas summer. One day it’s raining, the next it’s 95-100 degrees, then a cold front and its 64 degrees for a low with the lake in disarray. Whew… It kept the fish just as confused as anyone else and relatively inconsistent patterns were prevalent from shallow to deep. I expect August to fish the same and we could definitely see an early turnover of the lake as fall gets into swing with the mild temperatures. The lake has been holding steady with the rains we’ve been getting. It is 3.75 feet low. The water temperatures are ranging www.lakeforkareanews.com from 84-90 degrees. Some of the lake is slightly stained with most areas being fairly clear up to 3 feet in places. The hydrilla grass is really making a steady come back on the lake with lots of grass to be found at the backs of some of the northern to mid lake creeks and I have even seen some small sprigs of it growing down by the dam. That is great news and will definitely make for some awesome fishing the rest of the year. The shallow bite is good and has been a bit more consistent than the deeper fishing lately. Lots of bass are roaming the shallows with groups of shad that have made their way to the banks. Top waters like the yellow magic have been good early and late. Who doesn’t like a top water bite? Weightless jerk baits like the Berkley Havoc “The Jerk” has been good for these bass chasing shad. I have also been catching some frogfish when the clouds and rain come in. I like the floating frogs like the Spro frog fished slowly through the pads or vegetation. Another great bait for fishing around the grass is a Texas rigged Berkley Power Worm or Havoc Juice Worm in the 7” or 8” sizes respectively. My favorite colors are black & blue, green pumpkin, and blue fleck. Of course I always like to break my Abu Garcia Villain wacky worm rod when I target these shallow fishing too. I use the 6’9” medium light version with an Abu Garcia MGX reel August 2014 spooled with 12-15 lb Trilene 100% fluorocarbon line. I like to use a weedless wacky hook and a 6.25” Berkley Bottom Hopper with a small nail stuck in the end of the worm for some weight to throw it and help it sink nose down into the grass. Fishing this around the grass on Lake Fork will put them in the boat! Best colors are june bug, shady watermelon candy, and green pumpkin. The deep bite has been hit and miss lately. When I say deep I am referring to that 20-30 foot range. The inconsistency, in my opinion, has been due to the lack of a distinct thermocline setting up on the lake this summer. This is the water range of depth out deep that appears in the summer where a band of oxygen forms at a certain depth and gives the fish a sanctuary of comfort during the hot months of the year. One of two things will probably happen this month. It will either become very hot and it will set up again or it will stay mild and the lake will eventually turn over which will eliminate any possibility of a thermocline. So, depending on what transpires with the current weather, we will see what happens. Until then the most consistent deeper bite for me remains to be in the 12-18 feet range. There are a lot of big bass feeding on shad in this depth range. I like to use my Lowrance HDS units to locate bass out deep. Once I have located with my graph The Carolina rig and Talon football head jig has been best when they are close to the bottom. I like my Carolina rig on a 7’6” medium heavy Abu Garcia Villain or Veritas rod with a Revo reel spooled up with some 20 Continued on page 5 East Texas Optical, Inc. 2476 West State Hwy 154 Quitman Buy 1 Get 2nd 1/2 OFF Monday-Friday 9-6 Saturday 9-1 903-878-2451 800-442-8266 BIG SMITH’S BBQ AND DIPNET Dennis Eimers from west Texas caught this beautiful trophy bass while on a guides trip with James Caldemeyer. 903-438-1547 4858 TX Hwy 154 (corner of 154 & CR 1174) 2 1/2 Minutes South of Walmart Along with our Famous BBQ NOW SERVING Catfish, Shrimp & Ribeye Steaks! Summer is BBQ time for most of us but in truth, I do about as much outdoor cooking during the cold weather months as I do in the summer. Just this past week, I slow smoked a couple of 4 pound roasts from a wild hog I harvested a month or so ago. I had assembled a group of friends for a mid summers night hunt for hogs with my buddy Mark Balette who owns B & C Outfitters down in Trinity County. I knew we would be busy once we gathered at the ranch and there would be very little time for cooking. A couple days before the trip, I defrosted the pork roasts and made plans for pulled or chopped pork sandwiches to enjoy on our outing. I’m often asked how I get wild pork so tender and moist. The process is actually very simple and I have developed a system that is fool proof. Keep in mind that wild pork almost always has less fat than domestic pork. Thus, the cooking process must involve long, slow cooking with moisture. I do all my meat smoking and preparing BBQ on my Smokin Tex Electric Smoker but any wood fired smoker will also suffice as long as one has the time to keep the fire burning low, at temperatures around 200 degrees for many hours. From past experiences, I can guarantee that can be an arduous task which might even involve loosing a bit of sleep! With my electric smoker, I simply put a little wood, four or six ounces, in the wood box, set the dial on the thermostat and let it smoke and tenderize the meat. Some people inject marinade into thicker cuts of meat when making BBQ put I use a different system that is much easier with a finished product of moist, very tender meat. Let me walk you through the process I used for this most recent meal of pre cooked pork sandwiches. First, I applied a generous amount of rub all over the roasts. I use a prepared rub called Obie-Cue’s Sweet N’ Heat which is a spicy brown sugar blend. I love a bit of spice in my BBQ and before I discovered Obie-Cue’s, I would blend See Us on Facebook brown sugar, garlic, red pepper, etc. Now, I simply apply the rub right out of the bottle. When it comes to making BBQ, I’m all about quick and easy! Once I have the meat well seasoned (and this doesn’t have to be wild pork, it works well on domestic beef or any large cut of meat), I put the meat in an uncovered aluminum pan and then into the smoker at 225 degrees, for about 2 hours of heavy smoke. I’ve used a wide variety of fruit and hardwoods through the years but it’s hard to beat dry pecan, plum, pear or hickory. It’s important to use dry, seasoned wood. Green wood will often give BBQ a bitter taste which is caused by the resin in the wood. If the meat is very dry with little fat, I give it a light coat of olive oil during this initial smoking process. After two hours of heavy smoke, the meat will have plenty of smoke flavor, trust me on this. If you are using an electric smoker, there is no need to add more wood. Now comes the time for the long, slow cooking process. I put a very liberal amount of my favorite BBQ sauce on the meat and pour a half inch or so of apple juice into the pan. This is plenty of moisture and will CARTS TO GO insure the meat does not dry out. I then cover the pan tightly with heavy duty aluminum foil. The thermostat is turned down to 190 to 200 degrees and the meat is allowed to slow cook all night. I try to time the cooking so that the meat is well smoked and ready to cover and slow cook around bedtime. It matters little exactly how long the meat is left cooking at this low temperature as long as it cooks at least 12 hours. If the moisture remains in the pan, it will not burn. I let my Smokin Tex work its magic all night. After about ten hours of slow cooking, the roast of even an older buck or hog will be fork tender. I usually let the meat smoke until eight or nine the next morning, a total of 12 or 14 hours. After the meat has spent the night in my smoker, I remove the foil and drain all the juice from the pan. With a heavy knife, I chop the meat and place it back into the pan. Now, it’s time to season the meat, keep in mind you will loose many of the seasonings when you drain Continued on page 8 Lake Fork Area News Used - Refurbished - Custom Golf Carts 214-673-1313 (cell) 903-878-2742 Friday-Sunday Lake Fork One mile south of Hwy 154 bridge (across from Trophy Lodge) ** call anytime ** Place Your Ad Today! 903-885-7223 Email: [email protected] Page 8 www.lakeforkareanews.com August 2014 Lake Fork RV & Auto/Diamond Park Homes Inc. THAT’S IT! We have just created some of the tastiest BBQ imaginable. Before this most recent outing I mentioned at the beginning, I toasted BBQ buns and made a couple dozen sandwiches for the trip. Wrapped individually, the sandwiches were placed in Zip Lock bags and put it the cooler. We heated up a couple cans of BBQ beans and some prepared potato salad for dinner. The National Dove Hunter Survey is a cooperative effort by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, National Flyways Council and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Last year, the survey was sent to randomly selected hunters in the 40 states with dove hunting seasons. The large sample of 800 per state on average ensured that most of the survey results are applicable at the national, regional, and state levels. Of the 30,382 surveys successfully delivered, 12,631 hunters responded—earning a 41.6 percent response rate. This survey was the first attempt to learn more about dove hunter characteristics; dove hunters’ time spent hunting; perceived constraints to hunting; and attitudes and opinions about potential effects of spent lead from hunting ammunition on mourning doves and other wildlife. “These opinions and preferences are important and should be taken into account whenever possible,” said Shaun Oldenburger, Dove Program Leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “The department does not have plans to make any regulatory changes based on the survey findings. This information about dove hunters’ motivations and their perceptions can help us make informed decisions concerning education programs and in our communications with this group of stakeholders.” The full survey results, along with further information about dove hunting, can be found at http://bit.ly/DoveHunterSurvey. “Tired of the rest, come to the best” Since 1969 RV service has been our business. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve stopped and wondered ‘why’ at something I witnessed in nature that I did not understand, I’d be a rich man today. I have learned that there is usually rhyme and reason to everything in the natural world. I remember as a youngster watching herons stand motionless for long periods of time, staring intently into shallow water in a trancelike state. I was greatly puzzled as to WHY these birds stood as still as statues for extended periods. Later I learned those slender, long legged birds were the masters of patience. You might say their very life depends upon them being extremely patient creatures. It’s in their nature to remain still for as long as necessary for a small hapless minnow, frog or crayfish to swim within the ‘strike zone’ of their long, spear like beak! Did you ever wonder WHY freshwater drum makes those ‘drumming’ sounds when landed? I grew up being taught that the sound was produced by two loose bones in the fishes’ head. I later discovered the sound is produced by abdominal muscles squeezing against the fishes swim bladder. So much for old myths! Or WHY the female roadrunner lays her eggs in other birds’ nests and allows the ‘adopted’ parents to raise their young? I spent the majority of my life believing this myth. In truth, both the male and female roadrunner shares the duty of setting on the clutch of eggs. The male spends the nighttime hours on the eggs and the female takes over during the day. As a youngster, it was a widely accepted fact among the country folks where I lived that ‘black panthers’ roamed the creek and river bottoms. I’ve heard more than one older person give vivid accounts of these black cats they sighted. It’s an accepted fact among wildlife biologists that there are no ‘black wild cats’ native to Texas. But, to be completely honest, the accounts I’ve heard from several totally creditable folks still cause me to wonder it there might just be long tailed jet black cats wandering the backwoods today. I’ve had several people look me square in the eye and make statements such as “Luke, the cat I saw had a long tail and was jet black. It was NOT a bobcat and definitely not a feral house cat; it was at least 3 feet long, less the tail!” This is a ‘myth’ that I must admit I believe in, at least partially. When tagging along on quail hunts during the fall as a kid, I learned that the dry berries of the brilliantly colored sumac shrub had a wonderful lemony, sour taste. I loved to chew on these berries during the hunt. My dad and most of the older hunters advised me, “Boy, those berries come off the sumac bush, they are highly poisionous! Spit them out!” I later learned that the berries from sumac (Staghorn Sumac) were used by Native Americans to brew a very flavorful tea. I later used the dried berries to concoct the drink, which has a flavor much like lemonade. I grew up believing the Devil’s Riding Horse (Praying Mantis) was capable of spitting poisonous venom into one’s eye which almost always resulted in blindness. Granted, these insects are extremely scary looking, especially in the eyes of children, but they definitely do not ‘spit’ and are completely harmless to humans (other than their scary appearance). And, is it really true that fish feed during the middle of the day during the full moon? The assumpContinued on page 12 tion is that, because of the light created by the full moon, fish ‘stay up Dr. Martin Fielder of Sulphur Springs, and sons Jacob, 18, Aaron, 13, Benjamin, 10, and their cousin, Jack McKibben, 17, all of Arlington, enjoyed a day of fishing on Cooper Lake with guide Tony Parker. Looking back on about 50 years of fishing experiences, I can truly say I’ve caught the most fish during the first 3 hours of daylight, with or without a full moon! I’ve heard for years about wild boar attacking hunters. After a lifetime of pursuing these wary and, tasty critters, I can truly say I’ve only been charged by boar on two occasions and both times, dogs were involved. Once while hunting with Jerry Dunn near Athens years ago, Jerry’s dogs bayed a boar in a dry creek bed. I was on the high bank with my bow. The hog spotted me and instantly charged in my direction. Thanks to the difficulty the hog encountered climbing the steep creek bank, I was able to make a well placed shot and 2014 Mad Dog Moore Memorial Team Bass Tournament $10,000 Guaranteed in Cash and Prizes September 6th, 2014 Oak Ridge Marina Lake Fork, Texas Fishermen and Spectators: Weigh-in begins at 2pm. Another time, I was photographing a rank old boar that was bayed by several hog dogs. The enraged boar spotted me and broke through the ranks of dogs, charging me. I jumped behind a big oak and the dogs pushed the boar out of the pin oak flat and into some heavy brush. Getting between a sow and her piglets is asking for trouble but given a chance to run, most wild hogs, boars or sows, are more afraid of humans than we are of them and much prefer to run than fight. If you’ve spent much time in the outdoors, I’m sure you can add to this list of myths. The natural world holds many wonders, some big and some small. Thanks to all the folks that helped pull things together. It started with our annual Fishing & Boating Swap Meet on July 5th. This event was held at Pope’s Landing Marina. Things kicked off about 7:00 AM and wrapped up about 2:00 PM. We had over 20 vendors and about 200 shoppers. This event has grown and improved so much since it started we have been asked to do it more often. We will be considering more dates and ways to keep improving the swap meet. The WCCC held it’s first kid’s event on July 12th (“Take a Kid Fishing”). This event was great and lots of fun for us and the kids. Some area folks and businesses stepped up to sponsor this event. Cabela’s in Allen, TX provided each child with a free rod & reel. The William’s Creek members rigged the rods and provided the bait. All the kids from the youngest up to 16 years got to go fishing a couple of hours. We had 4 pontoon boats that took kids out on the water and the youngest kids fished from the dock at Pope’s Landing Marina. Most all the kids caught a fish and a few turtles were also caught. A hotdog lunch was served at 11:30 and the kids were kept to thank individual sponsors: James Thompson, Jimmy Carter, Kelly Young Electric, David Askins, Stubby, Weinee’s, Erwin’s Barber Shop, Don Ellis, Tony & Kathy Sinclair, Robert’s Golf Carts, Craig Malone, The Minnow Bucket, Eric Emeritz, Fish-n-Elmo, Brodie Morrison, and Stan Mayfield. The new online-only system is currently accepting applications for 2014-15 Drawn Hunts, including Special Permit hunts, E-Postcard hunts, and US Forest Service Antlerless Deer Permits. For the first time, the entire process is being handled electronically — from applications, to fee payments and permit issuance. “Applications for Drawings on Public Hunting Lands” booklets, application forms and permits will no longer be printed and mailed out. Hunt options can be browsed online by category or by area using an interactive map. A downloadable PDF of the 2014-15 Drawn Hunt Catalog is also available online. In addition to now being able to apply for multiple hunt areas within the same hunt category (i.e. apply for a Gun Deer — Either Sex hunt on more than one hunt area), the online system will give applicants more time to apply. With no paper applications to mail in, applicants will have until midnight CST on the day of the deadline to apply. Applicants will also retain and continue to accrue Preference Points, now called Loyalty Points, as in the past. Points will stay with the category and be applied to each application equally. And for the first time, applicants will be able to check the status of their applications and Loyalty Points online at any time. The new system will only al- Lake Fork Area News Place Your Ad Today! 903-885-7223 Email: [email protected] A.J.’S FISH HOUSE 5375 N. Once the submission and billing process is completed, orders cannot be canceled and fees cannot be refunded. All applicants (adults and youth) must have a Customer Account. Applicants that have previously applied for a drawn hunt or purchased a hunting or fishing license should already have an account. Those who do not have an account will need to create one before applying for a drawn hunt. A unique ID number is required to create an account. Unique ID numbers can be any of the following: State Driver’s License Number, Social Security Number or Passport Number. The Drawn Hunts Program offers affordable hunting experiences at more than 80 areas around the state in more than two dozen different hunt categories, including eight specifically for youth only. Adult application fees for Special Permit hunts are either $3 or $10 depending on the category. Adult hunters that are selected will also need to pay an additional permit fee of $80 for regular hunts and $130 for extended hunts. Some categories require no permit fee. There are no application fees or permit fees for youth age 8 to 16 and non-hunting supervising adults on youth only hunts. There are no application or permit fees for the E-Postcard hunts or the U.S. Forest Service Antlerless Deer permits. To participate applicants will need internet access, an email address, and a credit or debit card. Application deadlines start in August and wrap up in January. With the outdoor hunting shows coming up in a few weeks and many hunters making plans for their fall hunting trips, I though it might be interesting this week to discuss hunting on high fences ranches. This is a ‘hot button’ topic for many hunters. Let me share my thoughts on hunting ranches with game proof fencing. Broad St (Hwy. 80) Mineola • Mon.-Sat. 10-5 LIKE US ON FACEBOOK and deer hunting outfitter and member of several pro staffs, I often hear hunters discuss hunting high fenced ranches. Some, mostly guys that have never hunted a big, well managed high fenced operation, are convinced that all hunting on high fenced properties, regardless the size of the ranch, can be classified as a ‘canned hunt’. I’ve had the opportunity to do a great deal of hunting during my career in country that ranged from the wide open expanses of North Dakota for white tailed deer to 500 acres of high fenced, thick east Texas bottomland for hogs. I remember a decade or so ago when I hunted a big open ranch down in Schleicher County. The ranch consisted of 6,000 acres of rolling live oak and cedar covered hills and deer were patterned well to corn feeders. I remember the outfitter taking me to the spot where I was going to hunt the next morning. He intentionally ground the butt of his cigar into the ground right next to the feeder and scattered a gallon or so of corn around the feeder. “I have conditioned these deer to the smell of man. I stop by these feeders every day and we’ll see deer coming in to the corn while we are driving away.” Sure enough, we drove a couple hundred yards from the feeder, stopped and watched several doe and a couple of bucks come trotting in to the feed. The next morning I arrowed a nice buck from a ground blind 20 yards from the feeder. Would the challenge of this hunt have been any different had this big ranch been high fenced? I think not. I was hunting deer that had been conditioned to the sights, sounds and smells of man. These deer were totally unpressured. Because of hunting pressure, I’ve pursued deer on high fenced properties that were much more difficult to take with a bow than on properties such as the ranch in Schleicher County. It’s hunting pressure and contact with man, Continued on page 17 August 2014 www.lakeforkareanews.com Page 17 Hunting Continued from page 16 or lack thereof, rather than fences that determine just how ‘wild’ deer are. Whether it is sporting to hunt over baited areas is a personal decision that we each have to answer for ourselves. The truth is, if we hunt very much in Texas, chances are good we will hunt deer over a corn feeder. I’ve hunted around ‘corn piles’ up the Dakotas where farmers simply dump a pickup load of shelled corn on the ground to bait deer and hunt them early morning and the hour or so before dark when they feed. A few years ago, I watched a 240 pound ten point ND buck walk a half mile off the side of a small mountain to a pile of corn I was hunting over. I arrowed him at just over 20 yards. Up in this big country, the deer had never seen a high fence. Would the hunt still have been a challenging if the 10,000 acre ranch I was hunting been enclosed within a game proof fence? In contrast, I’ve hunted 600 acre high fenced ranches for This free range whitetail doe jumps this low fence easily. It takes a 10 foot fence to contain whitetail deer. With the exception of a muzzleloader hunt on a high fenced ranch years ago, the vast majority of my hunting has been with compound bows. To be a successful bow hunter, one has to get close, within 30 yards of deer. Even the novice rife hunter should be proficient in taking game at 100 yards. Simply because the animals are confined within certain boundaries (a high fence), rifle hunting high fenced ranches has a high percentage for success. The percentage for success goes up exponentially when rifle hunting simply because the deer cannot walk across a low fence onto a neighboring piece of property, becoming off limits to the hunter. A rifle hunter that spends enough time hunting a high fenced ranch will eventually position himself within rifle range of the animal he or she is pursing. Did you ever consider the fact that deer living on big ranches that encompass several thousand acres live out their lifetime on the property, regardless the height of the fence? We could go on with this discussion but ulti- mately, the decision whether to hunt high fenced property or not is a personal one. I can state with certainty that I’ve enjoyed some very challenging bow hunts on high fenced ranches. I’ve also hunted some low fenced properties where deer came running to the sound of a whirling corn feeder like hogs to a feeding trough. Regardless our feelings about landowners constructing game proof fencing on their properties, the fact is that land in Texas is about 97% privately owned and Continued on page 18 Page 18 www.lakeforkareanews.com ~Since 1984~ SARTIN MARINE 2014 Boats in Stock www.sartinmarine.com FINANCING AVAILABLE Hunting Continued from page 17 high fences are perfectly legal. Have you driven through the Hill Country in the past few years? Most of the highways are bordered by high fences. Coming from an era and part of the state where game fencing was unheard of, I have mixed feelings about fencing wildlife ‘inside’ anyone’s property. But I’ve watched the trend, especially in the past couple of decades. As land prices becomes more and more valuable and fewer people can afford to purchase tracks large enough for hunting, it’s a sure bet that the Lone Star State will continue to see more high fences. As previously stated, hunting can be just as challenging inside fences as outside. It all depends upon the size of tracks and available cover. As a community, this information will be very helpful in determining our tourism efforts, real estate trends and more. In addition to input from the community, Mr. Parker will be conducting random surveys over the next year with anglers and other visitors to the area. This information will determine anglers attitude towards tournaments, TPWD regulations, economic impact to the area, etc. NEXT MEETING THURSDAY August 22nd Volunteer Appreciation Meeting 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm AJ’s Fish House FM 17 All Welcome membership not required to attend This is an excellent study and Lake Fork is very fortunate to have been chosen for this opportunity. If you would like more information about this research, feel free to contact Dr. Kevin Hunt or Charles Parker at (662) 325-4153 or email: [email protected] Volunteers to be recognized at August Meeting The Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce is operated 100% by volunteers and with all the activities going on this past year, we will fill a whole meeting just thanking everyone for their help. August has become the LFCC official Volunteer Appreciation Month! Volunteers do everything from attending boat shows, working booths at tournaments, collecting donations, selling advertisements, working local events and more! We are excited to have the opportunity to recognize and thank these individuals, and encourage everyone in the community to come out and thank them for all they do! SEE FINAL OUR REPORT ON THE LFSA PAGE LFCC PO Box 213 Alba, TX 75410 www.lakeforkchamber.org August 2014 I’m writing this article on July 18, and it’s 65 degrees outside. This is Texas and it just doesn’t get in the 60’s in July, but it has with this weird cold front. This cooler weather has brought down hundreds of grasshoppers. They are on most of the stumps in the lake and the catfish are feeding on them. I cleaned a channel cat that must have had 30 of them in its belly. This cold front hasn’t hurt the catfishing any, as the water temperature is in the mid 80’s. We have been fishing in 36 to 38 ft. of water. A lot of the fish we have been catching have been suspended up about 10 to 12 ft off the bottom. On June 30, I landed one of the biggest blue cats that I’ve ever caught on Lake fork. It was well over 10 pounds and probably hit 15 pounds. My good customer Jimmie Tobey from Palestine netted the fish and we took pictures and then released it back to fight another day. Tobey also landed a nice cat in the 7 pound range that we released that day. www.lakeforkareanews.com Stan Kuhn’s Catfish Report I would like to thank Ernest and Judy Harris from Grand Saline who make Ernest’s Poletown Catfish Bait. This bait has been really producing all of the fish we have been catching. My pictures don’t lie. You can find this bait all around stores in the Lake Fork area. Oak Ridge, Minnow Bucket, Star Mart, Fisherman’s One Stop, and PayN-Save in Alba carry the bait. Thanks also to Sartin Marine for keeping my Mercury Motor running with quality motor oil and service work. If you need any work done on your boat Billy Sartin can get you fixed up. I trust his mechanics and his prices are the best on Lake Fork. Catfishing should remain good throughout the summer. Last August was very good for me and it should be the same this year. We have more water in the lake this year too. Drink plenty of fluids and put on the sunscreen and always fish friendly. Until next month be safe on the water and good fishing. Ken Rorie from Plano caught this nice channel cat on Ernest’s Poletown Bait. Gayle Lumley from Quitman holding two of 71 cats caught with catfish guide Stan Kuhn. Justin Denney from Allen, Texas caught and released this nice cat. Chris Michael from Paris was all smiles when he landed this nice channel cat. Tyler outdoor writer Steve Knight holding two of 49 cats with guide Stan Kuhn. Oliver Despain caught these nice cats on Ernest’s Poletown Catfish Bait. Geoff Grube from Allen, Texas caught this nice cat on Ernest’s Poletown Bait. Mineola City Councelman Jack Jones with a big channel cat caught on Ernest’s Poletown Bait. Larry Kennemer, Lonny Michael and Chris Michael from Paris caught 46 cats. Butch Mars from Aubrey, Texas had fun with this nice cat. CPR Page 21 Ken Rorie, Butch Mars, and Freddie DeJarneah caught 79 catfish with guide Stan Kuhn. Marvin Golden and GlennGolden from Tyler holding two of 76 cats caught. Vern Bergguist and son Bill caught 52 nice catfish with guide Stan Kuhn. Tanner Couch, Justin Denney, Michael and Geoff Grube, and TJ Wesley caught 69 catfish with guide Stan Kuhn. Page 22 www.lakeforkareanews.com Mission of the Lake Fork Sportsman’s Association • Promote sportsmanship and the protection of natural resources • Promote the quality of Lake Fork fishery and other outdoor recreational activities • Promote the future of angling through youth programs • Promote a spirit of cooperation with local, By Dick Walker county, state, and federal governmental agncies and other civic organizations for the purpose of improving Lake Fork and its surrounding communities • Promote items of interest of the membership at large Button Bushes Phase Two As we have been reporting for the past several months, the LFSA and Yantis High School FFA students have partnered in a habitat restoration project for Lake Fork. The FFA has been growing over 600 button bushes in the High School Greenhouse. The student’s efforts have resulted in plants that range in height from 4 to 5 feet tall. Texas Parks and Wildlife has called the plants some of the best they have seen. The plants are now ready for phase two of their growing cycle. The plants needed to be moved out of the greenhouse to begin acclamation to the outdoors. To protect the plants from the July/ August East Texas sun it was necessary to build a shade cover. LFSA project leader Sue Parrish and her team went to work and erected a 20 foot by 40 foot shelter with netting to block some of the sun from the plants. August 2014 LRB Supports the Lake Fork Open Scholarship Tournament July 27 and 28 the LFSA provided the Live Release Boat in support of the first annual High School Scholarship Tournament at the Oak Ridge Marina. The primary mission of the Lake Fork Open High School Scholarship Tournament is to provide college scholarship funds to high school students while teaching sportsmanship and responsibility in a fun and friendly environment. This is a perfect fit for the mission of the Lake Fork Sportsman’s Association. As we all know, Lake Fork is one of the premier Bass fishing lakes not only in Texas, but is ranked among the best in the country each year by several magazines. With over 300,000 visitors to Lake Fork each year, the businesses and community have created a wonderful destination for tournaments and events. This tournament was no exception as the Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce put a great program together for high school anglers and their families. The LFSA would like to congratulate the Lake Fork Chamber and its sponsors for a job well done. LFSA member Richard Nipp getting the LRB ready at the Lake Fork Open A pair of happy High School Open anglers Tournament Season in Full Swing LFSA volunteers stretching shade screen over frame work. Once construction was completed on the shade screen the task became moving the 600 plus plants out of the greenhouse. Teacher Tonya Rabenaldt and her group of students set up a “pot brigade” and emptied the greenhouse in short order. Sue Parrish wants to thank Ladale and Peggy York, Ron and Pam Bowden, Tom Reily, Carol Boykin, Ken and Carolyn West and Randy Bunch for their help in completing Phase 2. Job well done! Tournament time is a busy time for the LFSA and its live release boat. The Live Release Boat is our most visible presence on the lake. The 24 foot pontoon boat is equipped with three 100 gallon tanks. Each tank has an oxygen feed as well as aerators. The LFSA provides the Life Release Boat to any tournament with 50 or more boats. There is no charge for this service. However, we do accept donations that are used in the upkeep and maintenance of the LRB. Our membership is open and available to any and all who share our deep commitment to do whatever is necessary to preserve the legend that is uniquely Lake Fork.
