2011 - Program - Voices on the Coast
4 - 8 June 2011 Voices on the Coast A Youth Literature Festival ... a timeless tradition Welcome The love of literature is a timeless tradition, whether it be reading, writing or listening to oral stories. The way that we, as twenty first century citizens, engage with literature may have changed from the postcards and simple messages of 100 years ago but the essence is still there. The desire to communicate with others and to relay the stories through generations is constant. In 2011 Voices on the Coast emphasises the new ways in which we share our stories, the blogs, the e-zines, alternative publishing and the internet, whilst still focussing on the traditional oral storytelling of the local Indigenous people with Lyndon Davis. There is something for everyone. Thank you to presenters, teachers, school students, parents, volunteers and the general community for supporting this literature festival so strongly. Voices on the Coast is presented by Immanuel Lutheran College and the University of the Sunshine Coast. Deborah Abela Tristan Bancks Judy Barrass Writing is about making trouble and after a trip to Africa where Deb was caught in a desert sandstorm, harassed by monkeys and thrown in jail twice, she figured she knew enough about it to write the adventure/ comedy series Max Remy Superspy. She’s co-written the Jasper Zammit (Soccer Legend) series with Johnny Warren and The Remarkable Secret of Aurelie Bonhoffen, about a young girl who shares an amusement park with ghosts. Deb’s latest book, Grimsdon, is set in a flooded city with lost children, flying machines and sea monsters. She is about to climb Mt Fuji in Japan. Hopefully she won’t get into any more trouble. Tristan Bancks tells stories for the page and screen. His background is in acting and filmmaking. His new books are Galactic Adventures, First Kids in Space (July, UQP) and My Life and Other Stuff I Made Up (July, Random House). He has also written Mac Slater, Coolhunter (Random House Australia, Simon & Schuster US), and the Nit Boy series. Tristan is saving for his ticket to space. He loves telling inspiring, fast-moving stories for young people. Judy Barrass is an artist who uses the book as her medium. She also works in digital media experimenting with new ways of reading, writing, and making books. In 2010 she was part of a Qld Writers Centre project looking at writing and digital technology. She set up Alternative Publishing, a website with simple information on how to get involved in digital publishing, zines, and chapbooks. Judy has introduced many people to the joys of making books and zines. She now also adds an extra twist by also introducing them to simple ways of publishing their books on-line. www.tristanbancks.com www.alternativepublish ing.info www.deborahabela.com 5 Michael Gerard Bauer Katherine Battersby Rebecca Belfield Kennedy Michael Gerard Bauer was born and lives in Brisbane. J.E.(Julie) Fison John Flanagan The Hazard River adventure series was inspired by a family holiday on the Noosa River. She has shaken hands with an orangutan in Borneo, camped with elephants in Africa and has eaten rat soup, which apparently tastes as bad as it sounds. She now lives in Brisbane with her husband and two sons and spends as much time as possible on the Noosa River. John Flanagan’s bestselling Ranger’s Apprentice adventure series originally comprised twenty short stories, which John wrote to encourage his twelveyear-old son, Michael, to enjoy reading. The series has come a long way since then. Now sold to more than twenty countries, the series regularly appears on the New York Times Bestseller List and has been shortlisted in children’s book awards in Australia and overseas. John, a former television and advertising writer, lives with his wife, Leonie, in the Sydney beachside suburb of Manly. This sparked a long held ambition to illustrate children’s literature. This dream came to fruition with the publication of her first picture book, Grandma’s Shoes by Libby Hathorn which won the 2001 CBCA Crichton Award for best new illustrator. This began a successful career illustrating a number of award winning children’s titles. Her work has been included in the Lu Rees archive and she has been the recipient of a May Gibbs fellowship. Caroline continues to divide her time between children’s book illustrations and fine art. Richard Newsome was born in Wanganui, New Zealand, and now lives in Brisbane with his wife and three children. He won the inaugural Text Prize for Young Adult and Children’s Writing for The Billionaire’s Curse, which grew out of stories he made up for his children at bedtime—tales of kids getting up to mischief, tackling puzzles and solving crimes. The Emerald Casket is the second book in The Billionaire Trilogy and winner of the prestigious Esther Glen Medal. Julie Beveridge is Queensland Writers Centre’s Program and Services Manager and has been with the organisation for over five years.
