Section 1
Overview of the
proPANEL® Series
The time-consuming process of planning and piping the
mechanical room is now obsolete.
The Uponor proPANEL® Series are pre-assembled,
pre-wired and pre-piped control panels designed around
the function and capabilities of the Uponor Climate
Cŏntrol™ - Multifunction hydronic controller. These
panels allow easy integration of multiple hydronic system
controls into one cost-effective and efficient system.
With built-in flexibility, contractors can use a stand-alone
proPANEL for a small application or connect multiple
panels together to meet the needs of a more demanding
application. Wiring is effortless as Cat5 connection cables
simply attach between the panels and controller. Easy to
mount, the panels help contractors save time and money.
Contractors must ensure the primary and secondary
systems’ BTU/h requirements and flow rates are
within the capability of the proPANEL unit selected
for the installation.

Sizing Data
proPANEL Unit Selection
Connecting Multiple Panels
A quick overview of the proPANEL series capabilities is
outlined in Table 2-1. For a more detailed description,
as well as component identification and mechanical
schematics, refer to Section 7.
The proPANEL series is designed to be connected
together in order to meet specific requirements of a
project if needed.
proPANEL Unit Sizing
The system designer and installing contractor must ensure
the primary and secondary systems’ BTU/h requirements
and flow rates are within the capability of the proPANEL
unit selected for the installation. The maximum flow
rates shown in Table 2-1 are based on the ASHRAE
recommendation of 4 feet of head drop per 100 feet
of pipe.
proPANEL Piping — The size of the piping is 1-inch
stainless steel. It is designed to support a recommended
maximum flow rate of 9 gpm. The minimum flow of 4 gpm
represents a velocity greater than 1.5 feet per second in
order to evacuate air from the system.
Refer to Table 2-1 for the proPANEL pipe sizing
information by BTU/h as it pertains to the respective
differential temperature. Refer to Section 8 for
additional flow information for 1-inch piping at
different differential temperatures.
Additional Charts
Pressure loss charts and quick reference flow charts
are available for 1-inch and 11/2 -inch copper piping
in Sections 8 and 9. The charts provide pressure loss
information in feet of head required for pump sizing.
The quick reference flow charts allow the designer to
select applicable flow ranges for 1-inch and 11/2 -inch
copper as the flow pertains to differential temperatures.
Quick Reference Flow Charts — The charts shown in
Table 2-1 only show the minimum and maximum flows
for 1-inch copper piping. The charts in Section 8 provide
flow information throughout the range of the respective
piping. The gray areas of the charts are not recommended
for use and should be avoided.
Pressure Loss Charts — The pressure loss charts
in Section 9 to determine the feet of head drop within
any segment length based on flow. Use these charts
together with the mechanical design of the primary piping
to determine the flow and head requirements for the
primary pump.

proPANEL Unit Zone Wiring
Wiring Connections
Connect a two-wire thermostat to terminals 2 and 3
(Rh and W) on the Heat Demand 1 terminal block in
the control interface in the proPANEL unit.
Power
1. Install a disconnect power switch (leave in the off
position while wiring) into a standard wall plug,
and install a standard 4" x 4" electrical box for
the transformer preferably within two feet of the
proPANEL unit mounting location.
Repeat the previous steps for Heat Demand 2 (for
models 90Z and 90MZ, if used).
Caution: All wiring must be performed by
a licensed professional and comply with local
trade practices and codes. Uponor does not
take responsibility for any damage caused
due to failure to comply.
2. Install a 24VAC transformer of adequate size
(a minimum 20VAC per proPANEL unit and 20VAC
per Climate Cŏntrol - Multifunction unit) on the
4" x 4" electrical box.
3. Run the low-voltage wiring and connect to the
power supply 24VAC terminals on the control
interface. Note: If you use the same transformer
to power up the Climate Cŏntrol - Multifunction
unit or multiple proPANEL units, make sure that
the transformer is sized correctly to power both
(a minimum 20VAC per proPANEL unit and 20VAC
per Climate Cŏntrol - Multifunction).
4. Plug the pump into the wall plug.
Control Wiring
System pump: Using a Cat5 wire, connect the pump
port on the proPANEL unit's control interface to
the assigned Climate Cŏntrol - Multifunction unit's
Cat5 ports that is assigned for this function. (See
Figure 5-5.) Ensure the selection switches on the
interface are in position.
Option: If the pump control selection switch on the
control interface is set to Internal, the proPANEL unit's
system pump will automatically start when there is
a call for heat, thus no need to connect to Climate
Cŏntrol - Multifunction. (See Figure 5-5.)
Mixing valve (only for models 90M and 90MZ):
Using a Cat5 wire, connect the valve port on the control
interface in the proPANEL unit to a Cat5 port on the
Climate Cŏntrol - Multifunction unit that is assigned
for this function. (See Figure 5-5.)
End switch: Connect a wire between the end-switch
terminals on the control interface in the proPANEL unit
to the dry-contact input terminals on the Climate
Cŏntrol - Multifunction unit that are assigned for this
function and proPANEL stand-alone applications.
Ensure the selection switches in the interface are in their
correct position.

Purge/fill Procedure proPANEL 90MZ and
Purging the proPANEL
90Z Units:
Purging is the act of eliminating the majority of air from
a closed-loop hydronic system. This process results in a
quiet and trouble-free hydronic system.
Refer to the process outlined on pages 23 and 24, as
well as Figure 6-1.
Purging and Preparation:
1. Make sure you have adequate elevated pressure
in the form of city water, pump and well system or
transfer pump to force the water into the closed
loop system if done properly (30 to 60 psi).
2. Confirm the supply water piping is connected to
the point-of-no-pressure change (ET1 and AS1
location) as illustrated in Figure 6-1. This shows
a typical bypass make-up assembly, which allows
the use of elevated city pressure to purge.
3. If the system being purged has been exposed to or
is at freezing temperatures, Uponor recommends
using a suitable propylene glycol mixture for the
initial purging/fill and warm-up period.
4. Before purging or pressurizing the system, confirm
that the expansion tank (ET1) has the proper
pre-charge of air, typically 12 to 15 psi. This will
cover most one- to three-story structures.
Primary and Boiler Purge/fill Procedure:
1. B
egin by closing BV4, BV5 and BV6 (both panels).
Connect a double-ended hose to the hose bib 1
(HB1) ball-valve style. Confirm the other end is in a
purge bucket, five-gallon plastic pail or the nearby
floor drain. Then open HB1.
2. Confirm that BV1 and three service valves are open.
Slowly open BV2, ensuring that the pressure gauge
exceeds 30 psi. This allows the higher pressure fluid
to flow into the primary system. The fluid fills the
piping and the boiler around to the HB1 and then
the hose.
3. Slowly close BV2 until the pressure guage
reaches 25 psi.
Uponor proPANEL® Series Installation Guide
1. C
onnect another hose to HB2; it is part of the
ball-valve assembly for the panel isolation.
Confirm the other end is in a purge bucket, fivegallon plastic pail or near the drain. Then open
HB2.
2. Make sure the three-way valve is in the open
position by opening it manually.
3. Open BV6.
4. Open zone valve 1 (ZV1) by removing the
thermal actuator.
5. Slowly open BV2, ensuring pressure does not
exceed 30 psi. The fluid fills the panel and
the piping to HB2 and then runs out of the hose.
Keep draining the hose until clear, bubble-free
fluid runs out of the hose.
6. Focus on one manifold or heat emitter at a time,
purging each loop and zone separately. As the
fluid and air return from the system, they will
purge out of HB2.
7. Slowly close BV2 and HB2, carefully watching the
pressure gauge. Before the system powers up,
ensure the system pressure is set at the desired
psi, typically 12 to 15. Confirm all hose bibs
are closed and all ball valves are open with the
exception of BV2 — it remains closed. The system
is ready to operate.
8. Close ZV1 by mounting the actuator onto the
zone valve body. For Zone 2, repeat steps 4 to 7.
9. Close BV1* from page 24, BV2, HB1 and HB2
10. Open BV3, BV4, BV5 and BV6.
* BV1 (Ball-Valve 1) can only be left open after purge is complete if you
have an approved back flow preventer in the system. Please check local
codes for additional requirements.
Purge/fill Procedure proPANEL 90 and 90M Units:
1. C
onnect another hose to HB2, (part of the
ball-valve assembly for the panel isolation).
Confirm the other end is in a purge bucket,
five-gallon plastic pail or by the nearby floor
drain. Then open HB2.
2. Open BV6, making sure the three-way valve is in
the fully open position (e.g., this may be done by
manually opening the valve.)
3. Slowly open BV2 again, making sure the
pressure gauge doesn't exceed 30 psi. The
fluid fills the panel and the piping all the way
around to HB2 and then out of the hose. Keep
draining the hose until clear, bubble-free
fluid runs out of the hose.
23
6. Close BV1*, BV2, HB1 and HB2.
7. Open BV3, BV4, BV5 and BV6.
4. F ocus on one manifold or heat emitter at a time,
purging each loop and zone separately. As the
fluid and air return from the system, they purge
from HB2.
5. Slowly close BV2 and HB2, carefully watching
the pressure guage. Before the system is
powered up, ensure the system pressure is set at
the prescribed psi, typically 12 to 15 psi. Confirm
all hose bibs are closed and all ball valves are
open with the exception of BV2 — it remains
closed. The system is ready to operate.
* BV1 (Ball-Valve 1) can only be left open after purge is complete if you
have an approved backflow preventer in the system. Please check local
codes for additional requirements.
Post-purge notes: Confirm that the system’s heating
appliance, controls, thermostats, zone valves, actuators
and safety devices are working properly before leaving
the building for an extended time.
