Welcome to our 14th
annual Picture this…film
festival!
I don’t often get a chance to
welcome people to the festival
because that job is usually
done by our festival director.
Regrettably, our festival
director’s short-term disability
leave has turned into a longer
one than originally planned.
This has meant the team
usually involved with helping
out had to run the show! It’s
been a challenge, but it has
also been a great learning
experience! A big ‘thank you’
goes out to both long-time
festival workers and those who
are newer to us for stepping up
to the plate to make sure this
year will be a success! I think
we have done our job well and
hopefully left the ship in good
shape for when our director
returns.
WELCOME
Having been involved in the festival from the beginning, I can say from
experience that it has been quite a journey. Early films entered were often
made by budding filmmakers working on complex, expensive and usually
borrowed equipment. It was very difficult for people with disabilities to
access equipment and create films in their own voices. Now almost
everyone can be a filmmaker. It is even relatively easy to get equipment to
make filmmaking more accessible. There is also more interest on the part of
the general public in films relating to disability. That being said, many
disabled actors and filmmakers still struggle to access the big screen. While
we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.
What do we have for you this year? Prepare to be amazed by animation that
will captivate your interest from the opening screen, moved by authentic
stories of disabled people’s experiences from across the globe, challenged
by the relationship between disability and politics/war and simply entertained
by brilliant storytelling. We were thrilled by the number of Canadian entries
we received this year. Hopefully that means there are more filmmakers with
disabilities and people with disabilities who have stories to tell being
supported across our country. The films coming from Spain were incredible.
On the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WW1, we are being
challenged by UK filmmakers to think about the unique relationship between
war and disability. Speaking of the UK, our ongoing partnership with OSKA
Bright will bring the best of their festival from Brighton to ours in Canada.
This year’s films will glide you across the dance floor, educate you about
disableism and the damage it does around the globe, take you on a journey
through disability arts, activism and sexuality, ask you to explore
controversial issues, such as the use of restraint and seclusion and, most
importantly, challenge you to think differently about disability. Enjoy!
Acting festival director,
Denise Young

Picture this...film festival mission: Picture this...film festival, Canada’s first annual international disability
film festival, celebrates films by and/or about people with disabilities.
Picture this...film festival is a year-round program that:
●
Attracts films by and/or about people with disabilities to our major annual festival and numerous other
events.
●
Stimulates the voices of disability communities by creating a venue for people with disabilities to tell
their stories.
●
Educates the broader community about the lives of people with disabilities and the contributions of
disabled citizens.
The team at Picture this...film festival is dedicated to making the festival a great, must-attend, annual event
in Calgary. The work behind the scenes goes on for the whole year, culminating in the fabulous Awards
Gala Night and festival. As soon as one festival ends, work on the next one begins.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
Picture this...film festival on the road: Picture this...film festival has always been an exhibition festival,
which means it goes “on the road.” The main festival is held each year in winter in Calgary, Alberta,
Canada. This is where films entered into the festival get debuted, shown for the first time under the Picture
this...film festival name. Once the main festival is over, Picture this...film festival goes on the road.
The name ‘Picture this...on the road’ is used to differentiate the main festival from the travelling part of the
festival. Picture this...on the road travels with a selection of films from the festival’s entries all over Alberta,
out of province and occasionally to other countries. As the reputation of Picture this...film festival increases,
so does the demand for it to travel to more and more locations and thereby reaching many more people.
To book Picture this...on the road to come to your area, please contact us at 403-717-5610
or [email protected].
Judging criteria: The jury panel is made up of a broad range of individuals from the community with a wide
range of skills, knowledge, expertise and perspectives. They give up a large amount of their time to preview,
make notes and finally judge each film. As part of the process, each jury member uses a scoring form to
appraise each film. Some areas the jury panel considers are: overall impression, creativity, editing and
technical aspects. Eligibility of films and awards are at the discretion of the jury in consultation with the
festival director.
Awards and categories: Each award winner receives an etched award. Honourable mention recipients
receive an award plaque.
The categories are: Documentary, Drama, Education, Animation and Performance
TRT (Total Running Time) categories (where applicable): Under 10 minutes,10 to 30 minutes, 30 to
60 minutes, Over 60 minutes

This was another
successful year for the jury
with entries from around
the world including
Australia, Canada,
Denmark, Russia, Spain,
Democratic Republic of
Congo, Uganda and UK.
Once again, submissions
were of high calibre and
extremely entertaining.
Where else—in one day—
would you fall in love with a
talking dog, watch a baldheaded man get a haircut,
and empathize with an old
man in a lighthouse who
pickles the love of his life in a
glass jar?
Only at Picture this...film
festival!
FROM
THE JURY
The winner of best in festival is Idiotas (Idiots), a drama from Spain, which retells
the familiar story of the ‘message in a bottle’ using hundreds of balloons which a
young man and his dog release from atop a church steeple. The cinematography
is superb and the camera angles are both memorable and impactful. Equally
impressive is the winner of best animation, Broken face, a submission from
Quebec, Canada. Jury members were captivated by the dramatic quality of this
short film where dialog, music and technical expertise come together beautifully.
We were deeply moved by Who cares?, the winner in the Documentary 10-30
minutes category. This film shares the struggle of three elderly Deaf people who
use British Sign Language as their method of communication. Issues surrounding
independence, social isolation and loneliness come to the fore as they grow older
and lose their family supports. Some of the camera angles powerfully depicted the
fragility of the ageing process.
Spain’s Mano a mano (Hand in hand), winner of the Drama under 10 minutes
category, is more than a boy meets girl film. It speaks to attraction and attenuation
as a young woman’s passion is quashed when the man she has just kissed drops
his knapsack onto the floor, exposing his prosthetic arm to the woman and a
packed train. Again, camera angles and, in this instance, the absence of dialogue
work in unison to build to a climax that is simultaneously captivating and
disappointing.
The festival is never short on films that are controversial in nature. This year's
submissions looked at topics such as the use of restraints in schools (yes, in
2014!) with the documentary Restraint and seclusion: Hear our stories and the
right to die with dignity, the documentary Just as I remember, just to name two.
Restraint and seclusion: Hear our stories won the festival’s Dodi Spittal Award.
Just as I remember earned an honourable mention in the Documentary 10-30
minutes category partly due to the son’s raw and honest recollections of family life
before and after his father’s diagnosis of A.L.S.
Along the same vein, body image and sexuality is covered—or, should we say,
uncovered—in Sins invalid: An unshamed claim to beauty in the face of invisibility,
which places front and centre artists of color and queer and gender-variant artists
who explore sexuality, beauty and the disabled body in an outstanding
performance piece winner.
In conclusion, the jury would be amiss not to acknowledge King of the road,
honourable mention in Documentary under 10 minutes, and The silent chaos,
honourable mention in Documentary over 30 minutes categories. These two films
speak to the determination and resilience in locations where culture and ideology
perpetuate the marginalization of the disabled. The idea that change begins with
one is an understatement in these memorable pieces.
Well, that’s it for this year. Enjoy yourself at the movies!

We've grown accustomed,
erroneously, to furiously fear our
body's fragility. This fragility which is so
controversial to us to the point of
inducing in ourselves the typical and
contained movements, already tired.
Once. Twice. The same movements—
the fears—the counted expirations—
the subtracted bodies—the blind
horizons. But the day comes when we
understand that the fragility is precious
and that the movement's arrhythmia is
safe. And we dance, accomplices in
the differences of a shared fall.
Richard's Unlimited 2014 Research
and Development video piece (in
development) is based on a list of
personal traits written by a young
autistic woman who died leaving
behind a remarkable legacy of
writing and music. The work will
explore alienation, empathy, talent,
social exclusion and love.
Accommodation is a film triptych about
the variety of ways it is possible for
people with a spectrum of abilities to
succeed and have meaningful
experiences as part of the university
community. The films are personal
stories that stand alone or work
as a three-part variation on a theme.
They focus on ability, accomplishment
and hard-earned achievement.
Accommodation
furthers the
understanding of adaptive use and
universal design among university
staff. It also models inclusion,
accessibility and peer-to-peer
interaction.

All eyes on us follows the journey of
four inspirational performers to the
opening ceremony of the London
2012 Paralympic Games. Stephen,
Lauren, Johnnie and David trained
for four months in preparation for this
'once-in-a-lifetime' experience. With
a voiceover from well-known British
actor, Mat Fraser, All eyes on us
sees 22-year-old Jacqui AdenijiWilliams meeting each of the
performers during their training to
discuss how their involvement has
impacted their lives.
Anna's gate takes us into the lives
of a group of children with mental
disorders in a child psychiatric
hospital. We share the hard, titanic
and profoundly human work that is
accomplished daily by caregivers
and educators. We meet people
with an extraordinary destiny who
struggle daily for the welfare of the
poorest. The documentary reflects
the joys and sorrows of the sick
children and the challenges of the
medical team that accompanies
them.
In a small flyblown gym, the
boxers bob and dance, throw
shadow jabs and spar. Naguru,
in t he Uganda n cap it al of
Kampala, is a community of fast
hands where the love of boxing
rules. It's here that Bashir
Ramathan throws real head
snappers. His routine is the
same each day—a jog around
the slum, jumping rope and then
working with the bags. Unlike the
other fighters, however, Bashir is
completely blind.
Bastion was having an ordinary
day with a few of the regulars, old
gents with less and less hair to cut
each time. A completely bald man
walks into a barber's shop just
before closing time. Reflections in
the window and an irritating fringe
have told him it's time for a haircut.
Bastion is a short film that explores
the boundaries between play,
imagination and sanity. The
harmless jester is perhaps not as
harmless as he seems.

When two million newly disabled

In a series of short films produced by

contemporary disabled artists
(Katherine Araniello, Jez Colborne in
collaboration with Mind the Gap,
Claire Cunningham, Tony Heaton
and Simon McKeown) present
unorthodox, irreverent and

John has been convinced by
‘friends’ that he has a mysterious
admirer and is guided by them to
try various ploys to impress
the laydeeez—all with disastrous
consequences. But then, the worm
turns…
He, a promising rock musician, has
many friends and a great musical
future ahead. But suddenly
everything changes. His mother
dies. His wife needs money for an
operation. They have a father who
is terminally ill, but are in conflict
with him. What to do? Does that
finish your rock 'n' roll?
Masterminded by Dean Rodney, a 23year-old artist, rapper and musician
from funk/punk group The Fish Police,
this fantasy world was brought to life
with the help of seventy-two band
members made up of musicians,
singers and dancers from seven
countries. Working online, the global
band created twenty-three original
songs and videos using cutting-edge
web technology. Most significantly,
they created a space where disabled
and non-disabled bands members
worked together to make the songs
come to life.
Evan’s ride
is a journey of
achievement and acceptance.
Thirteen-year old Evan Sheldrake
leads an inaugural bicycle marathon to
raise funds for ASD (autism spectrum
disorders). Diagnosed at age two with
severe autism, Evan shows that
perseverance, solid effort and love can
overcome seemingly impossible odds.
We learn the immense value of family,
caring and support, and witness the
difference they made in his success
with cycling. Now in its seventh
consecutive year, Evan’s Ride moves
forward.

In the small town of
Siguatapeque, Honduras, a
shoemaker stricken by polio had
a dream to fly. Over 50 years
later, his helicopter, cobbled
together with rebar and old
bicycle parts, is an engineering
marvel in itself. Folklore swirls in
the town that it once got airborne
and ultimately begs the question,
is he a genius or is he crazy?
This is the autofiction of M (one
of the directors of the film), a
young film-freak looking forward
to shooting his own films. On
account of two consecutive
retinal detachments, he almost
goes totally blind. During 40 bedridden days, he'll be obliged to lie
prone with both eyes closed.
This 'rehearsal of blindness' will
culminate in his confrontation
with his own fears.
Eye TV is about travelling with
Dexter, my cat, to different
countries, backward and forward
in time and through other
dimensions. It is a mixture of
documentary, comedy, video
gaming and animation.
Fairyland forest
is a tender
allegory of how love defeats evil
and conquers all. It tells the story
of Bumble Bee's love for a
butterfly, Princess Pink. To win
her heart he has to defeat the
dragonfly, Prince Black, and face
the dangers of the evil army
which surrounds Fairyland forest.
It's an uplifting, heart-warming
story full of colour and the gentle
moral of how love wins out in the
end.

Dive into the wonderful world of the
Fishwater, but remember—no men
are allowed! The Fish Police's first
music video, from their debut album
The Marzipan Transformations,
combines upbeat surreal pop
imagery with glitchy beats. They
have created a unique blend of
electronic future funk, pop and hip
hop. Dean Rodney, Matthew Howe
and Charles Stuart mix their love of
computer games, cartoons, fast food
and Japanese culture to create
sounds that set them apart on the
UK urban music scene.
A new member, Ian, arrives at an
established drama group where
the members know each other
very well. He immediately gets
under the skin of most of the
members by being better than
them at everything—or so they
think, until he is asked to display
his acting prowess. Fitting in is a
touching short drama which
looks at the effect of new blood
and the difficulties of finding your
place in the established order.
Forever mom is an intimate look
into the lives of six mothers of
children with disabilities. Using
flowing images and entwined
narratives, the women reveal
their stories of love, loss, grief
and struggling to cope.
Comedy where four grumpy old

Fragmented lives offers a unique
and incremental perspective. It is a
documentary which focuses on the
emotional impact of disabilities and
personal stories. These raise
questions of love and self-image; the
idea of having more ability through
dreams and memories and the virtual
world, as well as the challenges of
living with a hidden disability. Told
through four people, each in their
own unique way. It also
encompasses the raw honestly of
how disability impacts one's life.
Fritz tells the story of a 70-yearold, hard-of-hearing artist who
struggles to get back on his feet
after the passing of his girlfriend
Darlene. Fritz battles a tumultuous
relationship with his brother who
thinks his ambitions are foolish and
a waste of time. In the end, it's the
one thing he failed at early in his
life (a professional art career) that
gets him back on his feet.
Nuni is a redheaded sexy girl who
used to be a sexy graffiti artist but
then lost her leg after an illness.
When she meets her first love,
years later, it's time for revolution!
She decides to live again and paint
another sheep—a perfect one, but

Libraries are fantastic resources for
people, and our public library
workers meet and work with a wide
variety of people, including those
with disabilities and/or mental
illnesses. Many have questions or
other concerns regarding some of
their patrons and their behaviours.
Some may carry outdated ideas
about risks, violent tendencies or
other issues. Others have had great
experiences they would like to share
with their colleagues. This episode of
Librarian 411 show explores these
ideas.
A Dutch sign language
interpreter is starting a lesson.
What she is teaching, signs of
animals and plants, are coming
to life through animation. The
animals are more enemies than
friends to each other and soon
they are chasing each other. The
teacher is creating a big cage in
which she locks the animals and
peace is restored. But not for
long...
The purpose of Looking up: Sami
Stoner & Chloe is to give an
overview of Sami's obstacles and
how she learned to overcome
these issues with the help of her
guide dog, Chloe. Through
interviews, old photographs and
modern photography, this fiveminute documentary describes
the challenges of being legally
blind and how Sami has adapted
to live out her dreams.
At the age of 15, I was involved
in a severe car accident. In the
film, I pursued the challenge of
finding love. I met disabled and
non-disabled men and searched
for my place in a love equation. I
was in for a surprise.

Memoirs of a scatterbrain tells the
story of artist Rene Daniels (1950,

short in its prime. It goes on to
explore how Daniels—in spite
of his disability—manages to
communicate through his recent
paintings. Heralded as a very
promising young painter, his work
was exhibited in Amsterdam, Paris

was struck by a brain

The movie More than art tells a
story about the members of the
association Let’s Live Together
for persons with disabilities. It
follows their daily activities and
engaging participation in
workshops in and outside the
association, in an effort to create
the space for articulating their
creativity, freedom and
authenticity through various
forms of art.
The mural
is a 20-minute
documentary film following the
stories of several artists with
developmental disabilities from
non-profit thearcsf.org as they
work together with a group of
civic artists from freespace.io to
paint a wall that aims to erase
barriers. The film explores the
unlimited nature of art and its
capacity to express freedom,
even for those individuals whose
lives seem to be confined to the
boundaries of their disabilities.
The first half is a verbal
description of my epilepsy
accompanied by visuals
representing the time preceding
a seizure. This fades into a
hospital audio recording of the
time following a seizure—which
happened between these
moments, lasting a couple of
minutes. I retain no memory of
my seizures, usually not knowing
they happen. I’m trying to share
my personal experience. I find
this difficult, but important.
Have you ever wondered what
life would be like with only one
leg? My favourite leg tells the
inspiring story of the
perseverance and determination
of one person, Andrea Holmes,
who lives with that reality every
day. Despite her disability, she
succeeded as a paralympian
athlete and an international
champion for Canada in track
and field.

This film shows the severe childlabour exploitation in the rural
areas of Nepal by rich, poweroriented people. It shows
exploitation of poor children and
the impacts of exploitation on
those poor children.
The potential space developed after
long engagement with the daily

recession. The film is about the
grit of the American worker and
is a call for wider employment
rights for people with disabilities.
What would you do if you
couldn't have a conversation with
someone you loved, or even
understood what he was
thinking? Eighteen-year old Kyle
Nixon, whose younger brother
Jack has autism, has been trying
to figure that out for most of his
life. It turns out that the answers
to his puzzle also offer insight
into the value and dignity of
every one of us.
