A
very warm seasons’ greetings to all of you!
The recent past has seen some great entertainment for all of
you, as well as some momentous occasions for our beloved India
Club.
It was indeed a great honour for us when the President
inaugurated the first ever Indian Workers Resource Centre
(IWRC) at the India Club. This was the first ever Presidential visit
in the history of our institution. Hopefully, this will be the start of
many more such high profile state visits.
The All India Food Mela turned out to be a gastronomic dream
with huge participation by members and guests and the Diwali
night was made memorable by Sudesh Bhosle, who mesmerized
the audience with a series of retro hits of Amitabh Bachchan.
High quality family entertainment indeed!
The Eid holidays saw 72 members and their families bitten
by the travel bug and off they went for a club organized trip to
Greece.
The month of December will see the year 2010 end with a bang
and the new year 2011 will see a series of great events like the
Biker’s Ball, Club Annual Day and MNC Gala Night in quick
succession.
Before I set down my plume, I would like to wish, in advance,
all the members, staff and management of the India Club, a
Happy New year.
Brace yourself for an uplifting season ahead.
Adieu

Diwali
D
iwali 2010 celebrations at the Club
was a rocking affair, with Sudesh
Bhosle and his troupe. With the 70’s
theme, one expected the mature club
members to be a passive audience,
but the packed dancing area in front
of the stage reflected otherwise. Right
from the onset, audience members
were swinging away, with the eves
outnumbering the adams. Sudesh
kept even the young members busy,
calling them on stage and finding the
likes of Katrina and Aishwarya in them. Encouraging audience participation,
the club had kept special prizes for
costumes, resulting in us rubbing
shoulders with a Feroz Khan or a
Coolie No. 1 look alike. Why even the
club management had a Dev Anand
amongst them! The Babitas and Simis
were not to be left behind, what with
elaborate hairdos and slinky saris,
straight out of a Bachchan starrer. An
impromptu Amitabh dialogue contest
had the popular radio RJ Gagan
Mudgal walk away with the Sapil
hamper.
An extremely lively and enjoyable
evening, and hope the club has more
such events in store..

Festival of Faith
K
arva Chauth is a festival of faith.
The faith that women have in man
and in God. They pray to God and fast
on this day for the long life of their
husbands. It would have been very
hard for women to sustain themselves
for the whole day had it not been for
the great gathering and celebration we
had at INDIA CLUB.
Once women have an occasion to
dress up for, they forget ever thing else
and so did I, food was the last thing on
my mind.
I attended in one of my best outfits as
had all the others present. I have never
seen so many beaming beauties in the
club together, the glow of faith was on
everyone’s face. The décor of the hall
was brilliant & matching the mood of
the festivities.
There were beautifully packed gifts to
suit the warmth of the occasion. Praying
in groups lifts the spirits of every one.
It was the pious feeling in the hall
which must have brought angels down
from the heavens. No Indian festival is
complete without dance and dancing
on the beats of “dholak” is fantastic.
Every figure in the hall was flexible and
shaking with full energy. It would not
have stopped but for the moon that
appeared in the sky.
After all the fun I asked myself, was I
fasting? Am I hungry? The answer was
yes, for the next karva chauth in the
club!

Club on Thursday, 28th October ’10. Members
were encouraged to participate to showcase
their culinary talents by the thundering success of
the earlier food melas.
Totally there were twelve stalls catering to
Maharashtrian, Sindhi, Goan, Kerala, Tamil, Bengali
and, Kalinga cuisine. This scrumptious mouth
watering cuisine was fresh and home cooked food.
The food mela has now become so popular that
most of the stalls were sold out of all their food
items in less than 3 hours of opening their counters.
The mood for this fest was set by DJ Nevz

besides desi and bollywood music. The typical
desi backdrop created a homely but yet lively
atmosphere. All the

woke up on an exciting note as a visit to the MARS
factory was in store. A chocolate is easy to eat, but the
processes that goes into creating it is very elaborate. Seeing

used in making chocolates. The MARS factory technical staff
explained various steps of the process and answered the
questions fielded by the kids.
The appetizing smell of cocoa was overwhelming and
the children were more than happy to accept the chocolate

the facility in the India Club bus had a wonderful picnic
atmosphere. Snacks for the day were provided by the club. FF

what is the main function of the bandhas?
On what system of the body does it work on?
Ans..................................................................
BANDHAS-INTRODUCTION
he human body can be compared to a
T
house where a lot of things happen it
is also a scene of exchange, there are many
openings or gates; both gross and subtle. It
is through these gates that food is ingested
and excreted, air is inhaled and exhaled,
and energy is absorbed and released.Yogis
have discovered that these gates need to
be sealed to harness the latent and hidden
powers in the body. Bandhas or seals are
practices that help you close various gates
of the body. The bandhas are applied at
3 crucial points in the body, which also
correspond to certain endocrine glands
as well as nerve junctions as well as the
chakras along the spine. At the throat,
Jalandhar Bandha is applied; Udyan Bandha
is applied at the solar plexus and the Moola
Bandha at the base of the spine. The moola
and jalandhar Bandha shut off the upper and
lower openings of the digestive tract thus
shutting off the flow of prana vayu upwards
and apana vayu downwards, udyan enables
the mixing of the two around the solar
plexus. Applying all three together is called
the Maha Bandha which also has the effect
of creating a no thought state which can
be seen as the ultimate aim of the bandhas.
At the physical level bandhas can be
seen as neuro-muscular locks that target
endocrine glands(endocrine glands are
ductless glands that produce hormones)
which are released into the blood stream
through the semi-permeable wall of the
glands, the effective production and release
of the hormones are greatly enhanced
by the practice of bandhas, for example
doing the jalandhar bandha massages the
thyroid and parathyroid glands, thyroxin
is produced by the thyroid glands which
determines the metabolism of the body.
If an obese person does jalandhar bandha
regularly, their weight will drop due to the
higher metabolic rate in the body.
By working on the entire hormonal
system bandhas are the potent bridge
between the body and the brain which
uses hormones to signal various activities
in the body. In yoga bandhas play a vital role
in creating a harmony between the body
and the mind.

IndiaClub 21
GM’s desk
History beckons the Club one more time
L
ess than a year after visiting the
Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet the
President of India, it was a privilege
and a great honor to host the first lady of
India at the Club. The Club was chosen
as a venue to launch India’s first ever
Indian Workers Resource Centre in the
UAE during the Presidents’ visit. This
center will be providing direct access to
welfare services for the Indians based
here in Dubai. The very fact that the Club
was decided upon for this very special
purpose is not only another feather in the
Clubs’ cap but it is also logical, given the
apt location that we have, to commence
upon a noble cause which will immensely
benefit our fellow nationals. The high
level delegation accompanying the
President along with the over thousand
invitees for this function marveled at the
well organized event.
Needless to say, the coverage of the
event was splashed all over the print
and visual media not only in UAE
but also in India. Some of the videos
and photographs of the event can be
viewed on the Club’s website www.
indiaclubdubai.com Apart from the excitement of the
President’s visit, other events have also
kept us and our valued members on the
toes. The All India Food Mela met with
an amazing response from, not only
the participating members who put up
a variety of stalls of different cuisines
from all over India, but also an equally
amazing response from the public. By
22 IndiaClub
11pm, most of the food in the stalls had
been sold out. It only proves a point
that our earlier trysts with organizing
different food themed events were not
one-off in nature. Multi cuisine functions
that we have offered to our members
are extremely popular and gaining in
attracting repeated accolades from those
benefitting from them. Taste buds do rule,
it seems.
The Diwali Dhamaka was just what
the name suggested. The “dhamakedar”
performance by Sudesh Bhosle was
absolutely explosive. He rocked the
crowd and how. The sheer energy of
Sudesh Bhosle and the other performers
was enough to carry the entire audience
through the evening. An equally
responsive crowd who were dressed
in their retro best was given ample
opportunity to reminiscise about the
not too distant past. Sweet memories do
bring about certain special moments in
everybody’s lives.
The India Club façade lit up in pink to help to promote
awareness of breast cancer
72 Club members took off on a 4 night
5 day Eid break to Greece. The popularity
of these trips, which started off last
year is evident from the unprecedented
response we’ve had. Unfortunately, we
had another 30 plus members on the wait
list who could not be accommodated due
to the unavailability of seats. I’m sure
the next trip being planned in March/
April, will have over a 100 plus members
holidaying together. The Club façade was lit up in pink
during the month of October in support
of the breast cancer awareness campaign.
Apart from the Ladies Coffee evenings,
Club members volunteered in the Pink
Book sale to raise funds for the cause.
We have consistently offered unstinted
support to various worthy issues and,
when our efforts pay off in any fashion
the encouragement received by the Club
and the participating members has no
bounds.
We are in the process of updating the
members’ records held by us and issuing
out new identity cards for dependent
kids. Members are requested to forward
us the details – forms for the same can be
downloaded from the Club’s website.
2010 was an other exciting year for all
of us. I am sure the start of the first year of
a new decade will be more exciting.
Wish Happy New Year to all of you.
Bharat Chachara
