Here is a cool midsection, some solid melodies present themselves, on their way to resuming the blasting once again and adding a few more twists and turn before The Exhuming Truth roars in spectacular fashion, to underline that there is more whence this quality comes. After two songs, this sounds i m p r e s s i v e ,w i t h t h e i r w o n d e r f u l a n d w e l l b a l a n c e d d e l i v e r y of blasting speed and uptempo/midpaced moments. Abyssus Abyssum Invocat (2:02), a plodding outtroduction ends this affair. This recording is under 20 minutes and it practically begs to be played again. Adamus Exul should be feeling some pressure! I'm sure people want more from them now, M o r d ( v o c a l s / l y r i c s )a n d A r a l o t h ( l e a d g u i t a r s ) r e s p o n d t o some queries,www. myspace,com/exul When did you record and how are the metal people M e l b o u r n e ,A u s t r a l i a r e a c t i n q t o i t ? ! AR: The Self titled demo was recorded and mixed through out 2008 in a home studio, it wasn't one solid process d o n e i n a s p e c i f i ct i m e . Although Melbourneand Australia in general not having the largest metal scene in the world most already had hold of our demo and were aware of us. Mo: We have been just blown away by the response we have received both for the Demo CD and at live appearances, Melbourne and the rest of Australia is definitely catching on to what we are producing, and there are definitely far larger and darker things in store for Adamus Exul in the coming months. Are there are lot of venues for grass-roots black metal b a n d s ? I s i t d i f f i c u l tt o f i n d g o o d p l a c e s t o r e c o r d ? Mo: We as a band have been fortunate enough to find an a u d i e n c e a t m o s t o f t h e m i d- s i z e d v e n u e s a c r o s s M e l b o u r n e .I n g e n e r a l , m a n y A u s t r a l i a n v e n u e s t a k e i s s u e with the more extreme brands of Metal, Black Metal being particularlydifficult to book. It is really dependent on who you book with (some artists are blacklisted on the Melbournecircuit) and how you sell the show, there is a lot to be said for inspiring confidence in a booker, though more often than not this has a tendency to blow up in your face with the Black Metal crowd after a few stiff drinks. In so far as recording is involved, there are no limitations on where you can record, however finding a p r o d u c e r w h o i s e x p e r i e n c e di n h a n d l i n g t h e s o u n d s t y p i c a l to Black Metal is a definite challenge. We were fortunate in working with Richard Burleigh for our demo CD, who was more than patient in engineering the final product with us, however we will be outsourcing elsewhere for the fulllength. What bands from Melbourne or Victoria in general you think make good and creative black metal? Mo: Without name dropping more than is tasteful, bands we have performed alongside and have a great deal of respect for as musicians and artists include Western Australia'sWardaemonic, Melbourne'sown Order of Orias, Urgrund, Nekros Manteia and New South Wales bands Vrag and Erebus Enthroned. The Black Metal scene in Australia is still relatively small, however there is a lot to be said for quality over quantity. The remoteness of some regions has p r o d u c e d s o m e i n c r e d i b l es o u n d s , e n e r g y a n d v i s i o n . What is the guitar relationshipbetween Araloth and Veign? Ar: I personallywrite everything for Adamus Exul as far as g u i t a r s a r e c o n c e r n e d .T h e s o n g s o n t h e C D a r e o n e s t h a t I have had composed for a year or so and only finally through Adamus have had the chance to present them as something in there finished form. I am personally looking forward to unleashing some new and fresh material on the upcomingfull length. W h a t i s t h e b a c k g r o u n d s t o . r i e st o t h e l y r i c s o f y o u r s o n g s ? Mo: The lyrics for Adamus Exul up to this point have primarily developed from a sense of Demonic escapism, in a sense that tracks such as This Blackened Spirit and C a t h a r s i sa r e e n t i r e l y i r r e v e r e n t t o r e l i g i o u sm e c h a n i c s a n d a r e m o r e e x p r e s s i o n s o f a p r e d i s p o s i t i o nt o i m a g i n i n g s o f new worlds built around the self. The Exhuming Truth stands as a statement of absolute irreverence to a worthless creator figure, and expresses a self-assuming godhead. These lyrics however are, as the music to which they are affixed set to a period in time and bear little resemblanceto our current lyrical directions, which are far more involved and relevant to us as a band. Without delving into too much detail, we are not well people, and are determinedyou join us in decline. What is bassistUrsar's role? Does Ursar play guitar? Ursar performs all live bass duties and is beginning to assume some creative input with the bass lines, and will be r e c o r d i n g o n t h e u p c o m i n g f u l l l e n g t h . O r i g i n a l l yU r s a r i s a s i x s t r i n g g u i t a r i s t p l a y i n g i n h i s p e r s o n a lp r o j e c t ' A u g u r ' , a band we would highly recommend. Mord does vocals. Are there any special effects on the voice? Does he do all the voices and can he reproduce those voices in concert? Mo: The vocal tracks for the Demo CD are, to my best recollection all true and without modification, save the typically applied studio reverb in a modest measure, in some places there are dual-layered tracks for vocals, but only to accentuate certain climaxes to the music. I am proud to say that we have had no difficulty in replicating the recording in a live environment, and would not nor will ever produce a recording we cannot do justice at a live show! Would you like to be a professional touring band? How determinedwould say you are?!l Ar: We are all 100% committed to spread the plague of Adamus Exul to infect everything in reach, anything less and there would be no point. This is only the very beginning for us and we are all determined to gain as much exposure for ourselves as possible. Mo: Adamus Exul is developing at quite a startling rate, the success of the self-titled CD and the responsethus far to live shows and those tracks that we have uploaded has been quite overwhelming. It is very clear to us that this is the beginning of something far bigger, the project taking something of a life of it's own in a sense. We have definite clear aspirations to tour both Australia and abroad following the full-length release, and have been developing new material that is sure to impress. Definitely keep an eye out - the plagueis spreadingl!! What are your plans for the rest of 2009 and 2010? Mo: The remainder of 2009 will see Adamus Exul in the studio for the most part recording our aforementioned fulllength, which will be due for a tentative release early in the new year. One thing is for certain, bothJexas and the rest of the Unites States are not safe from what we are creating, and it is only a matter of time before the black winds of far southern Australia bear spores of sicknessand plague from our shores to your own. You are not safe, noone is safe. You have been warned. THE END. The Styx Shipping Society (Germany) "A Grand Opening for a Coming End" is the band's manifestation to the metal world. The strengths of this album consistof their songs: solid, easily comprehensible black metal vocals, memorable uptempo/upbeat strong rhythms with a big-riff black metal guitar work and a drummer who does a good job keepingthe beat. The band has a few central elements that make them black metal (the vocals, guitar tone/riffs and atmosphere), but this goes substantially beyond standard, basic black metal. For example, you can clearly hear the bass guitar. They change the pace of the songs and that adds variety, from uptempo parts to cool doom-ish, melancholic or f u n e r a l - p r o c e s s i o n - l i k ep a r t s . T h i s i s n o t n o n s t o p b l a s t b e a t black metal, but it is largely uptempo and has a bangyour-head feel that black metal bands generally don't do. St. Patrick: No, there isn't. Every lyric on "a grand opening for a coming end" is self-contained. But the elements you are naming, apaft from the historical, are distributed almost equally on each song. It's hard for me to name general literary influences, because I write my lyrics by being guided by the atmosphere of a certain book, story, poem, lyric, movie quote, melody etc. So it's not like "Hey I like that lyrics, lets write something related!," I always try to assign and reinterpret certain ideas. But on second thoughts I would say, my most obvious influence on our record is actually the bible, or rather certain scriptures, probably Other works I really care for and I'm s u b c o n s c i o u s l yi n f l u e n c e d b y , a r e N i c k C a v e s , , A n d t h e A s s Saw the Angel", the great ,,Illuminatus!" by Robert Anton W i l s o n a n d R o b e r t S h e a o r m o s t o f H . I think it's wrong to label any band that writes lyrics in d irection. that Pater P.: Yeah, Manowar uses those kind of words like ever since! Amon Amarth has a song named ,,Thelast with pagan blood" and Moonsorrow for example had even an album called ,,of strengh and honor" and, they aren't labeled as rightwing bands, as far as I know, You should judge by sanity and open eyes, because that kind of band mostly comes out by theirselvesl Sven: Apart from that, is the theme ,,rightwing extremism in heavy metal" NO exclusive german problem, i t's i s s u eI a world wide St. Patrick: I for one can exclude using any of those vocabulary, because words like,,blood, honor, pride, fighting, war, strength, etc." are pretty hackneyed in our g e n r e . They love Motorhead a lot and really, they are something like a Motorhead playing death metal. They also do a cover of Motorhead. Metal Bulletin sent them these questions a while back, but the band could not answer as quickly as they would have liked, but the interview is still informative. On Brazilian television, are there a lot of televangelist promoting their r e l i gi o n and asking for money? Fuck yesl Unfortunately, it's not only on TV but on the radio and on the streets as well. It's a complete brain wash, mass hypnosis for the weak. Sometimes it gets to the point that it's fuckin funny, so we decided to write a song about it and that's how we came up with "Televangelism". Your album "Quarrel in Hell" has guest appearances from people from Krisiun. Incantation, Napalm Death, etc. Where did you record the album and where did the guests their oa rts? We've recordedthe album in Sao Paulo, Brazil. For our 3rd CD we wanted to do something special, so we decided to invite a few friends to do guest appearances. KRISIUN was rehearsing on the same studio where we were recording, so I invited Alex and he recorded it over there. With Barney from NAPALMDEATH and John from INCANTATION, we found some spot during their band's Brazilian tour to take them to the studio and record. We're on the process of writing, composing and recording the new stuff. We have already recorded 5 tracks for the up-coming CD, but still working on more tracks. Hopefully by the middle of this year we can have that new CD released and hit the road again for another tour. In the "Age of Quarrel" Tour 0B we played 60 concerts and we manage to hit Europe, where we went to 10 countries, did 24 shows in 25 days, and South America, where we did shows in Paraguay and Argentina for the first time and in Brazil where we did 33 dates. Daniel (vocal) and me write the lyrics and everybody in the band compose the music. Everyone 5 brings some ideas from home and when we get together for practice, we start jamming and composing the new songs. Where do you get ideas to write songs like "Nailed to the Bed of Worms" or "The Uroe to Feel Pain"? How much do things happening in Brazilian society affect the lyrics? I think a lot of what's happening in Brazil affects our lyrics and music as well. Brazil is a greag country but with big gaps as well. Our society has big differencesbetween the middle and poor classes and the rich minority. Plus all the corruption in politics, the crimes explosion, the drugs in general, prostitution, unemployment, low incomes, religion fanatism and the corrupted and unreliable police in general. So I think there are tons of ideas around us to write extreme music. What frustrate me the most is the children abuse cases, the ignorance of some people and l i ar s general. tn Does your music get played on the radio or televisionat all in Brazil? Is vour music too abrasive for the radio? On TV not at all, but on the radio yes, only on METAL shows of course, but we do Qet some airplay. Our music is not for anyone or everybody, so we'll never be a mainstream band. We rather stay underground forever, There is a lot of talk riqht now about the economic crisis taking place worldwide. Is it getting more and more expensive to record albums, to buv cds and shirts? Yes, in Brazil is getting harder and harder with the worldwide economic crisis. I mean, it was never easy but in the last 2 or 3 years things were getting much better and stable over here, with our currency and economy getting stronger. Nowadays there's a lot of unemployment and things for the future are unsure. People here barely have money to eat, imagine to attend 5 or 6 concerts in a month plus buy some merchandise, And not to forget about the CD piracy, ilegal downloading, high studios and m e r c h a n di s e cost s. Dani our former keyboarder back in 2007. I think for a song to have memorability it has to have.,.the right "juice" you know? a great vibe, d great atmosphere...and us not taking on a more raw black metal style we incorporate melodies and of course keyboards are crucial for a S h a d o w s o n gc o m p o s i t i o n . How are you after "Our Path Enlightened"? How have metal people in Romania received it? Cerberus: Greetingsl Well..,"Our Path Enlightened" was our first official release, so naturally we have a good feeling about it. The people who have received it, Romanian or not have really enjoyed it so we got some pretty good feedback. What role do vou think that keyboards have? For example, how does keyboardist Alexandra contribute to your songs? C: As I said keyboards play a crucial role in Shadowsong and I am sorry to say that Alexandra is no longer part of the band...she has decided to quit due to personalaffairs, w e w i s h h e r w e l l . . . How known are vou in Romania and Suceava, your home? C: We are not known by all (obviously), but where we have performed...people were pleasantly surprised and you know how words spread about a band...so this way quite a lot of people know of us. Back home in Suceava of course we are very, very, well known. "The Grief of an Obscure Waltz" talks about you disappearing into an obscure waltz. The band was started by you, Cerberus. Do you write the songs? Do vou write them in collaboration with other members, like guitarist Eisenroth? What are some of the biqgest obstaclesthat you confront? Are they economical, a question of mentality, the scene, buving instruments, places to record, etc.? C: Well, you know, in every band there are always disagreements about some things...we are no different, We've always had problems and the main problem which we still face is of economical nature...but this problem can be overcome and I am confident that we will succeed in doing so. Metal Granma: Coit call themselves a "grind and roll" band. What the music actually sounds like is just obnoxiously loud, screamed-out, somewhat dissonant, just very noisy punk/hardcore with grind/metal tones. OK, those vocals. How is this guy still alive, after the constant screaming like this?l It's not really growling and stuff, but more like a guy screaming his lungs out. A lot of that guitar sounds close to that music called stuff like noisecore/postmetal, where it's not riffing or "rocking," but making somewhat disjointed, anti-harmony sounds that are annoying to many and genius to many, or annoying to a person in a bad mood and genius to the same person in a bad mood later on that same day. At the same time, a good chunk of the guitar work does have a "musical" quality, in the sense that the notes do seem to go with each other and try to build a "harmony" of structure/ as opposed to trying to confuse and alienate the listener. The blasting, grind moments work well, and it's headbangingstuff, a lot more in the metal genre. To suffi Up, Coit has in mind that idea of "rocking', you or "rocking" with you, as the famous saying goes in Switzerland (only in the mountalns, though; in the cities, things are much more controversial) [What are you talking about, Grandma?!-editorl. For sure, the vibe is a plus for the recording. it's certainly not garage quality, but it has power and it's not diluted by a fancy studio sound. Style: Often the guitars are death metal brutality, sort of mosh-friendly and chunky, even some chuggachugga, but certainly not to the point of overdoing it. But there are thrashy moments that weave in and out, combining with the more death-ish riffs. At times, this sound achieves technical brutality tendencies, but this is a not an overriding component. The solos are not melodic, but are not just speed fests, either. Some of these solos do enliven the songs. They are adequate, not flashy. The vocals are often super guttural where nothing i s i n t e l l i g i b l ei n t h a t g r o w l i n g , t h e n t h e y s w i t c h t o a s l i g h t l y less guttural method which is more comprehensible, sort of. They pretty much keep it brutal. The drums prefer a general speed of uptempo and fast, but do not focus on total blasting all the time. This is why the songs have a groovy feel, maybe. Of course, double-bass drumming is a mode of operation employed throughout. Songs: The songs are made to get you to bang your head or move in some way. This is definitely the area, the songs, the band will need to concentrate on. Right now, they get by on muscle and energy, seemingly in no short supply: it's pummel, pummel, pummel and growl music. www.myspace.com/dianthusmetal Maraude (Ou6bec 'anada'l: Court Pr6saqe Ms. Coffee Fanatic: Maraude is one to take a second look at. It is black metal, but, wait, wait, wait, wait, just a minute, Mr. I Don't Like Black Metal, because Maraude is black metal with feeling, as in, a midpaced (NOT blasting stuff) metal where the band has to have interestingguitar work and hooks in order to get by, since they are not using a total speed attack. Actually, slow down, like this band you like so much, The band is quite creative and have a style that sounds pretty different, while still within the black metal genre. Metal Grandma: Well, I don't know, then, I find that I like metal that requires repeated listens. It's more like an adventure. If you want to understand something the very first time you listen to it, then there's always thrash, I guess. Ms. Picky: No, wait, I wasn't putting it down. I like this album a lot, actually and it's definitely a keeper. Metal Grandma: Oh, no, no, dear, I did get your point. It's just that, you know, let's Sdy, some black metal is all speed, but those bands would not know what to do if they slowed down. This band right here sounds confident: they can play uptempo and midpaced and let all their guitar w o r k a n d s o n g s a n d v o c a l s , e t c . a n d j u s t l _ e tt h e i r s o n g s travel out in the open air, with nothing to hide. Ms. Grumpy: The vocals are not "air raid siren" wailing, but more like midrange singing, but real singing, though. This is not thrash shout-talk vocals. The vocalist carries the notes appropriately for this sound of old heavy metal with a bit of 70s and New Wave of British Heavy Metal spirit, kind of sing-along metal, but kind of gritty, not real b i g - s t u d i o p o l i s h e d ,f a n c y d a n d y s t u d i o s t u f f . FYL This other recording This White Moutain Demo, naturally, partakes in the elemental foundationsunderlying the other recording commented above. The first song is a soft number, followed by the track The Lost and it is a much more openly black metal song, with black metal vocals. This particular track shows the aggressive black metal blasting speed of which the music is capable. Not surprisingly, the 7:41" time length is not all occupied with frenzied speed, as the calmer moments are present, too. The last track, The Eternal Woe (10:43), also has black metal vocals and it is a meandering exploration of the previously described different moods of This White M o u n t a i n . w w w . m y s p a c e .c o m / t h i s w hi t em o u n t a i n b a n d Metal on the radio in Houston and on the internet T h e M e t a lS h o w : F r o m t h e D e p t h s S u n d a y s1 O p m - I 2 a m O n K T R U9 1. 7 f m O n t h e i n t e r n e ta t w w w . k t r u . o r g I n f o a t w w w .m y s p a c ec. o m / f r o m t h e d e p t h s E j a c u l aR a d i oP r o g r a m T h u r s d a y s2 a m - 5 a m O n K P F T9 0 . 1 f m O n t h e i n t e r n e t a t w w w . k p f t .org Meqadeth: Endqame I n f o a t : w w w . m y s p a c e . c o m /ejacula M e t a lM o m : T h i s b a n d d o e s o k w i t h t h e i r a l b u m E n d g a m e .
